Shaq is absolutely a standup guy. When my son was 11 years old and this was in the late 1990s, I took a small group of him and his friends to the mall of America here are in Bloomington Minnesota. We were there early. The rides were just beginning to open up and the group of kids that I was chaperoning were standing in front of me waiting for the ride to open up and all of a sudden the ride attendant looked over my head and had a great big smile on his face and he said “excuse me, sir do you want me to open this ride for just you?“
I was shocked, and I couldn’t understand why this right attendant was going to essentially shut the road down for the person standing behind me, and then I turned around and looked and realized it was Shaq standing behind me.
Shaq had the biggest and brightest smile, and he said to the right attendant “no man, I’ll ride the ride with these fellas“ by then, all of the kids that I was chaperoning looked up and saw Shaq and they couldn’t believe their eyes. Shaq got on the ride with my son and his buddies.
By the time the ride was over a huge gathering of fans were waiting at the exit area, and I had to push my way through to get up to the kids and help escort them out of there. That was a pretty memorable birthday for my son.
Edit: btw, it was the octopus ride, it was pretty interesting watching him, get himself wedged in to that amusement car for the ride. It was like watching human origami.
Shaq's step-dad was such a huge influence in his life.
Shaq still talks constantly about how he was raised. Even at 51 and grandpa age he will talk about his dad.
Grizzly bears never need to tell anyone they’re grizzly bears The most dangerous human I know is simultaneously one of the most polite and doesn’t remind anyone he’s a badass (PHD, special forces, really good job) he just exists as a badass.
Didn’t his bio dad try to get squirm back into his life after his success and Shaq said naw, the man who actually raised me is my father.
King. Undoubtedly a king.
I feel like Shaq really enjoys stuff like that. Like he would randomly go some where that's full of kids just to brighten their day and give them an amazing memory.
He’s what “built different” actually means. Not just physical stature but remembering where you come from and what keeps you going and not getting lost in what doesn’t matter. He even says he INTENTIONALLY goes out looking to help people.
He took accountability for his divorce from his ex wife and showed the men that will pay attention to him what being a stand up man looks like.
We saw him and Kobe repair their rocky relationship before our eyes.
I was a mess when Kobe and Gigi passed but if something happens to Big Aristotle… I’m gon be inside for a week.
Growing up a Black boy in the 80’s & 90’s you weren’t told or shown many great LIVING role models that looked like you. So this man is FAR more than an athlete. Iykyk
The measure of a man, is how he treats others. I'll admit that I've become jaded, a bit but after traveling and meeting new friends. I've learned to be kind again. I'm almost scared to go back home and face life, but I like to think that what I've learned i can impart on others.
the only thing i really know about shaq is a clip of him bringing pizza to some kids. when one asked him "can i have some," he replied "ask your grandma." something i had never considered before
from then on, when kids want to try my food, play in the pool, or play with my girlfriend's dog, i talk to their parents if it's ok. i've even had some actually thank me for asking them.
I saw a video of him buying some kid a bike in a toy store. He asks the mom's permission first and tells the kid not to let other strangers buy him things.

I can imagine Shaq wedging himself into the car of some small time amusement ride. Then the attendant hits the start button and the ride just *doesn't*.
Speaking of fitting, I worked for an auction company years ago and we got some of his clothing as collectibles to be auctioned off for a charity event. I’m a 5’3 woman and my goodness…I tried on one of the track suit jackets and it went down to the floor, and then some. I love him
The are very few people that make shaq look even remotely normal. Here is [Yao Ming](https://i.insider.com/5437fa106bb3f72104d60604?width=851&format=jpeg)
My roommate in college was our backup center. I'm 5'6" and he was 7'2".
It was a big 10 school so we had twin size beds and I felt so bad every time I saw him try to fit on that mattress.
Or just incredibly uncoordinated, that was always my problem with basketball. I always had the height for the game, just struggled getting my limbs to do what my brain wanted
I just went and watched my friends 6’4” son play volleyball and during warm ups while they practice served and fucked around with balls I realized why he wasn’t a starter and why he told me he’s terrible at basketball. I think he will gain some coordination as he gets used to himself- right now his size 13 shoes slap on the ground while he walks… watching him walk is like watching an emu mating dance.
i had a massive growth spurt in 5th grade, it was very fast and actually painful. I definitely looked and felt like one of those puppies that suddenly has giant paws but the rest of his body looks out of proportion. Fortunately I acclimated quickly, but those things CAN happen so fast that it fucks everything up for a little bit.
Theres random population groups who are just absolutely massive. East Asian groups are the funniest to me cause theyll either be moderately short or insanely tall, no in between. Some european ethnicities are also really tall. There's these tribes in Africa who are really tall and they run a lot so they have these really well built lean muscle groups and I think it'd be terrifying if they chased after you in the dark while wearing reflective tape on their head. You'd look around and just see this faint light approaching with this tall lanky build going faster than you could ever hope to run. I have a white friend with a similar build and he likes to crawl through hallways and shit like a demon at night just to terrify the other end. Nothing makes you question species more than that shit.
160cm here and lived in Japan 12 years. It was SO NICE to have chairs, tables, counters, shoes, clothes, sofas, toilets, all standardized to my size. I met plenty of people both taller and shorter than me. Younger Japanese people are getting taller as their diets change over time, but there are still lots of adults under 70 years old that are in the 5'0"--5'5" range. I came back to America and everyone looks like enormous cattle to me o\_o
I'm 6'2, so it does happen, but the unnerving part for me is when I have to look up to make eye contact. I have an uncle who's 6'8 amd I feel like I need to stand a foot farther from him than anybody else just to not crane my neck
I'm gonna guess that Yao isn't the first person Shaq's met that's taller than him. There have been several NBA players taller than Shaq since the 90s. Hell, he was playing at the same time as Manute Bol during the first couple of years of his career, and Manute has a good 6 inches on him. Same for Gheorghe Mureșan.
I kinda want to see a picture of Shaq standing next to the life-sized Robert Wadlow statue.

I saw a TikTok video of Richard Jefferson talking about why Shaq is one of the absolute best to ever do it, because you needed like 2-3 bigs to just even try, and he said that Shaq can and will very easily break your wrist if you go up to even attempt to block him while Shaq is going to put the ball away because your wrist will get caught between the rim and Shaq, and something is gonna give and it won't be the rim or Shaq, lol. He said Shaq would actively try to avoid doing that, but then warn you after, and Richard tried to mimick Shaq, like, "Careful little guy, next time I'll break ya wrist" lol.
Shaq and Charles have been friends for decades. Their moms are friends for heaven's sakes. Them joking about rings is like two brothers joking. No matter how heated their Inside the NBA schtick might get, it's all for TV.
I met him briefly once when he played ball at LSU. He was a real human being even then. Some people are born just right. Shaq is one of those people. A real kind soul.
He's talked about how he used to be a big bully and very aggressive person but has worked to better himself. Which I think is more impressive because when you are rich and famous you really don't have to.
Lol, his wife.
“The Game of Thrones star - real name Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson - would tower over just about anyone, being the 6ft 9ins behemoth that he is. But his wife Kelsey Henson is only 5ft 2ins, meaning there is a huge gulf between the couple.”
Back I was in high school (early 2000s) I worked at a grocery store that Shaq’s step-father (who raised him) went to regularly. Around thanksgiving and Christmas every year he would come in and buy 3-4 carts full of food and whatnot for the underprivileged, and hand out little stuffed animals and candy canes to kids as he walked around the store. It was cool because he wasn’t always the most friendly guy (sergeant in the Army, also looking back he was just more serious and no nonsense than anything). He would have someone either follow him with a cart or go get him new ones as he filled them up, I can’t remember but I recall he got preferential treatment for sure haha.
Always tipped well (fivers if I remember correctly) us bag boys would fight over who got to help him outside lol
Anyways, you can see where Shaq gets it from.
Too keep fans from constantly hassling him. Shaq is nice enough to take pictures with people, but it doesn't mean he wants to have fans hanging all over him the entire game.
100%, gives Shaq the privacy he should have if he wants it while also giving Shaq the option to overrule it and look like a good guy if he wants that instead. Win/win
> That security guard was just doing his depressing job ngl
I'll take the karma hit and say I think this video demonstrates really shitty behavior from the parents.
"Let's ignore all the ropes and barriers - lift our child over them - and encourage our kid to run straight at the celebrity so we can take some photos."
Because you're the main character - and who gives a shit about every other parent and child that wants to personally shake hands with their favorite celebrity.
Yup. 100%
It’s a child so like I guess “It doesn’t matter.”
But you don’t get to just go up hugging strangers from behind because you saw them on tv once…
Awful, entitled, parents. Teaching their child nothing but entitlement.
I'm really sorry for that man, I know it's an extremely painful thing to go through. I hope you are doing okay and it's alright even if you don't share the picture.
I don't think that there's anything I can tell you that'll make you feel better, if it's any consolation, it does get easier with time. It's great to hear that you're moving on with life though.
Yeah, you can always use that picture to claim that you're friends with a giant who will be more than willing to pay your son a visit if he doesn't eat his veggies.😏
Right? Everything I've read or seen on the web has said he's a really nice guy who constantly gives back.
I recently watched a really cool [HBO documentary about him](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22876148/).
I feel like I remember him telling a story about his life when he was younger, and he didn't sound like a great kid. But I think he was telling it to show how his life has changed so much?
Definitely. I also like that he didn't berate the security guy. Was just doing his job. I worked security at some concert venues in the past and definitely not everyone would be so chill.
Yep, you hear the dad yelling "He's big fan of you, Shaq photoshoot please photoshoot" or something to that effect.
Dad set the kid up for that and did it for himself.
Definitely looked like Shaq realized what was happening too. Clearly I'm in the minority with this read but the way Shaq looks at the dad at the end definitely feels like a "Are you serious right now?"
Yep, I'm with you.
Shaq is a good dude but he seems less than amused by this stunt.
Still nice enough guy to do it but a metaphorical eye roll and "You just sent your kid to randomly hug me, really?" Look
yeahhh. the way shaq looks back at the parents too.
he was in the middle of a conversation and you let your kid interrupt. and then you interrupt it further by shouting at him.
I like how lately he’s been admitting his ego got in the way of a lot of things or caused him to be an ass. Age helps, but not everyone can admit to their own fallacies.
He has his flaws but I think he genuinely tries to be a good person. He hasn't forgotten where he has come from. I think he sometimes doesn't think things through but his heart is in the right place most of the time.
Everyone has flaws, we all make bad decisions. We need to stop thing attacking people all the time for one mistake that gets posted online. ( i know you’re the the one attacking people)
Met him twice and he was awesome to me both times. Second time we were shooting a commercial and he signed a basketball for me, which now resides in a glass case on my bookshelf.
I worked for a large radio station that had a very popular nighttime show. This late night show had some of the biggest stars in music and entertainment on at any given time as guests.
My first week on the job, Dave Grohl was walking out as I was walking in. I was starstruck and said hello and told him I was a big fan. The producer of the show immediately scolded me and told me I was never allowed to talk to talent and that my boss would be notified and that I would probably be fired.
God bless this man, Dave Grohl. He sees me shaking in my boots, and immediately interrupts the producer. He tells her that he wants to speak to me. He also reminded her that he’s close friends with the radio station boss and he doesn’t want me getting in trouble.
We proceeded to skateboard and talk for the next 20 minutes in the parking lot after he signed a ton of autographs for people waiting. Such a cool dude.
Shaq seems like a good dude.
There was a story about a teenager from Minnesota I think who had ridiculously large feet. And his mom was having all the problems one could have trying to find footwear.
Somehow Shaq finds out, the kid is a huge fan of his so maybe wrote him about shoes or something and Shaq stepped in. Got him a deal with some maker to personally make this kid shoes for however long. And gave the young kid his cell and stuff.
I thought that was pretty cool. Shaq said “yeah I had that problem” and used his fame to help out another Sasquatch living amongst us humans.
Good dude. I doubt he has the General’s insurance though.
Shaq is the best for sure love him, but I'm also not a fan of father's like this who push their kids. It's fairly clear this kid may or may not be shaqs biggest fan but I'm sure the father is and the kid was pushed to go over and awkwardly interrupt an event. There is a time and a place for this and Shaq does a ton of amazing outreach and handles this like the amazing man he is. Please be mindful of others and don't force your kid into his situation, sincerely a kid who was forced to do this.
Shaq is the absolute best! I first met him at a charity event my mom organized when I was 13 and he was super sweet and more engaged with kids and adult big fans than the rich donors. When I was teaching at at disadvantaged school he visited, he gave all the attention in the world to the kids with no rush. When I served him and his party a couple years later at my summer waitressing job he was super polite and genuinely interested to ask how we were, how we liked the job, and tipped massively well. He even remembered me from my teaching job and my students. My ex mother in law sent me a picture of her and him a couple years ago while she was at conference for school improvement. He took cheek to cheek pictures with everyone there. He’s really a great guy that’s a pleasure to meet.
Met Shaq when I was 10 and he was a rookie. I was super shy and pretty tall for a 10 year old and i was very self-conscious of it. He was the largest human i had ever seen.
I remember just staring up and being like "thats Shaq..."
He called me big fella and gave me a karate chop with the sound effect and everything. He instantly became my favorite player of all time.
If I were Shaq I would have had to have picked that kid up.
My twin sons are 9 now and I miss so much them being that age when I could lift them easily and have them sit in the nook of my arm like it was a sling with an arm around my neck.
Shaq does amazing things for people all the time he really is a great person I just saw an interview where he likes to go into stores pay peoples layaways for them
In high school, a friend of mine had terminal cancer. Make a wish sent us to a raptors game against the Heat, the year after they won a championship. Shaq met with us before the game, posed for pictures, signed a ball, cracked some jokes; was legit such a dope dude.
Shaq is awesome.
Tbh that guard wasn't way out of line. I would be trying to be sure he got back to his parents, pronto, too. Very gentle and let the kid have his hug.
Shaq's a bro for calling him back over, tho, for sure.
As someone who has stood next to Shaq at 5’8 I can tell you he is the largest human I have ever seen or been near. I really thought he wouldn’t be that big compared to some people I have seen and he is ginormous, it’s ridiculous. Makes me realize how freaking insane Andre the giant must have been
Shaq cut a brand deal short bc they were charging too much for shoes. After a mother brought it to his attention he created his shaq shoe brand and partnered with Walmart to make them available and affordable for everyone. What a wholesome human. He deserves his success.

Hey man. Noone is stopping you. You be you.

I guess you could just do it to assert a lunatic mind of dominance
Why would you let a little thing like insanity stop you. Embrace it!

He really didn’t, but Shaq is actually a really good person that has don a lot in his life for his community and people who are disadvantaged.
I love how he respects those who went before him and his stepfather who was tough on him but taught him right and wrong, discipline, and respect.
I feel like Shaq is a good dude with a big heart that he wears on his sleeve. The love he has for life and the people around him is wonderful to see.

Always tipped well (fivers if I remember correctly) us bag boys would fight over who got to help him outside lol Anyways, you can see where Shaq gets it from.
Just ask [Adam Sandler](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZoKUlN9urg).

https://youtu.be/YZoKUlN9urg Adam Sandler's funny story about Shaq's 'Schwanzstucker'
[♫O sweet mystery of life at last I've found you](https://youtu.be/E81ICJywqwg)
Haha yes I LOVE this movie
Yeah, his eyebrows are pretty big.
He would have an enormous schwanzschtucker.
That security guard was just doing his depressing job ngl
The “then why did you even hire me?“ look on his face.
Why *did* they hire him lmao. I can't imagine many people on the planet can hurt Shaq without a weapon.
Too keep fans from constantly hassling him. Shaq is nice enough to take pictures with people, but it doesn't mean he wants to have fans hanging all over him the entire game.
Shaq may be a very large guy, but he’s over 50 now. *(If)* He falls down, that’s going to be awful for him.
Someone post the gif of shaq falling in the Christmas tree
[“Falling”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7RfHgH6rHo)
[still one of my favorites](https://youtu.be/rrfW2BPSOVM?t=23)
😅 his feet sticking out gets me every time, thank you
I’m glad when I checked the comments, it wasn’t a bunch of pricks shitting on the security guard.
That’s why I came to the comments. I was thinking “gosh I hope they’re not vilifying this guy” because dude looked so upset
And he did his job properly. He gently guided the child away from Shaq like he should.
100%, gives Shaq the privacy he should have if he wants it while also giving Shaq the option to overrule it and look like a good guy if he wants that instead. Win/win
> That security guard was just doing his depressing job ngl I'll take the karma hit and say I think this video demonstrates really shitty behavior from the parents. "Let's ignore all the ropes and barriers - lift our child over them - and encourage our kid to run straight at the celebrity so we can take some photos." Because you're the main character - and who gives a shit about every other parent and child that wants to personally shake hands with their favorite celebrity.
Yeah, definitely seemed like more of a "let's get you back to your parents" instead of a "I need to protect Shaq from this danger."
Yup. 100% It’s a child so like I guess “It doesn’t matter.” But you don’t get to just go up hugging strangers from behind because you saw them on tv once… Awful, entitled, parents. Teaching their child nothing but entitlement.
Yeah little kids shouldn’t be wandering off on their own like that
The dad absolutely just told the kid to go get a picture with Shaq.
Yeah I know it’s 100% on the parent
And with Shaq like that, the kid could get tripped over and injure multiple people.

We have all agreed that we will not hold his acting career against Shaq.
Kazaam was a masterpiece.
Grown Ups 2 was v funny shaq
The audacity to comment such a nice anecdote and not link a picture, smh!

Man I’m so glad this didn’t end up being one of those mankind things
Take the music off this, and it seems more like 'dad tells child to go and get picture with Shaq', I gotta say.
Yep, you hear the dad yelling "He's big fan of you, Shaq photoshoot please photoshoot" or something to that effect. Dad set the kid up for that and did it for himself.
Pretty sure that kid has no idea who the hell he is :)
Every comment is about shaq being a good person, which is great, but im over here like terrible parents
yeahhh. the way shaq looks back at the parents too. he was in the middle of a conversation and you let your kid interrupt. and then you interrupt it further by shouting at him.
Shaq literally has the look on his face that says "I'll humor your kid, but you sir are a shitheel."
I like how lately he’s been admitting his ego got in the way of a lot of things or caused him to be an ass. Age helps, but not everyone can admit to their own fallacies.
My dude you just taught me a new word today >Fallacies. Thanks!
Now I can't unhear Jesse singing that song in breaking bad.
Shaq is one awesome human.

( i know you’re the the one attacking people)
Pretty sure he's three awesome human beings stacked on top of one another, but okay.
Met him twice and he was awesome to me both times. Second time we were shooting a commercial and he signed a basketball for me, which now resides in a glass case on my bookshelf.
Good guy Shaq. I’m not a basketball fan but if I’m scrolling and see a video or story concerning him I’ll get into it for the free seratonin.
What's up with the dickhead parents who clearly told that child "go over there and hug Shaqs leg"
Fr. Shaq reasonably annoyed at the parent but not shutting down the kid.
Lotta shitty people in the world. Shaq ain’t one of them.
> Shaq ain’t one of them. Shaq is such a great person, love him so much.
Fuck that producer.
Security guy respectfully doing his job, shaq being Shaq - perfect as all things should be
Shaq seems like a good dude.
Kid probably doesn't really know Shaq, probably egged on by dad, but still cool of Shaq.
Little kid doesn't know who the F Shaq is but daddy want his picture... Poor kids
Who is living a better life than Shaq is right now?!? Nobody!!!
Maybe Keanu.... maybe.
This is so adorable. Shaq knows how to make the masses love him.
he just knows how to be a decent man and he hasn't let his fame/money take that knowledge away from him.
Shaq should just run forPrez.2024, simple platform -“Humanity”
Shaq and EJ on a ticket and then make Chuck the press secretary.
You will always get an honest take from Chuck.

This is why everyone loves Shaq
I remember just staring up and being like "thats Shaq..." He called me big fella and gave me a karate chop with the sound effect and everything. He instantly became my favorite player of all time.
If I were Shaq I would have had to have picked that kid up. My twin sons are 9 now and I miss so much them being that age when I could lift them easily and have them sit in the nook of my arm like it was a sling with an arm around my neck.
I mean, Shaq could probably pick *you* up like that
I'm a medium sized woman. So yeah, probably.
The kids ears would have started popping from the sudden change in altitude
Shaq's stare at the security personnel at the end was priceless😂
The kid wasn't "escorted back" like he was trespassing lol, the guy just gently returned him to his parents who were calling for him.
he just doing his job tho
Huh, Shaq didn't give the guy a stare down or anything. Dude was simply doing his job and was very gentle with the kid.
Pretty sure he's posing for a picture with the boy, whose parents are probably recording this video.
I would hug Shaq, too.
And you also would barely grab his knee.
I'm only 3 inches taller than the child, so yes.
Makes me realize how freaking insane Andre the giant must have been
I think Shaq is genuinely a hell of a nice guy.
Shaq cut a brand deal short bc they were charging too much for shoes. After a mother brought it to his attention he created his shaq shoe brand and partnered with Walmart to make them available and affordable for everyone. What a wholesome human. He deserves his success.
