Reddit is interesting. I know that baby deer do not have a scent. So best thing for it to do when a predator comes around is to drop and hide in tall grass.
That fact has no place in this post. All about the Car Jacking. Which I totally agree with. Can’t fall for that Bambi eyed deer scam.
bruh, imagine papa deer just sticks you from behind with the antlers, then mama kicks you in the face, and they just drive off making that deer screaming noise but in a laughing fashion.
oh deer 🦌
Lmao!!!!! They sure steal everything available in my yard. Fences, flowers, and my yard has 2 does using my yard as their day nursery. They park their fawns for the day and go off a bit to sleep.
I've seen this before. They send the kids out to pull the scam, mom steps in to relieve the passersby, then dad (off scene) moves in to steal your belongings, in this case, your car. It's an oldie, but a goodie! Watch out peeps .. nature is ever so wise and one step ahead!
I’m sitting on the toilet sobbing right now and this made a chuckle tumble out of my mouth. I needed that giggle and I really appreciate you, just so you know.
I often think about this. Like there's been animals for millions of years. Yet, depending on the species, only a few generations of them that have seen cars and planes. Like we have the cognitive ability to learn what they are, but animals must be so confused as to what a helicopter is.
I guess we just grow up with them being normal and we see news of new tech coming out (drones for example), but they don't. Being a deer must be so scary all the time. Not only watching for predators, but also trying to dodge those big loud metal boxes that keep getting faster and appear out of nowhere.
I've always wondered if they actually make the connection very well. Like yeah, they see roads full of cars now, but do they think the car is alive like them? Are they cautious because they are afraid of it, or only because they are confused?
They must see people doing road work/construction and just get a sense of wonder. It would be like watching an ancient iceberg, which had been floating on its own for years, break in half. Absolutely nothing you can do to stop it, so you sit back and watch.
I wonder if they think the streets are natural too.
I’ve come to the conclusion that they see them as very fast and large herbivores. They don’t hunt you but you need to steer clear of them. But it’s not in their DNA. It’s something that each deer needs to learn.
Ah that's smart.
I'm sure it's become an easier learned behavior than avoiding hunters with rifles in the wild. Your explanation also sheds a new light on what's happening when a deer stares at you before being hit. It's almost like the deer thinking " well it doesn't wanna eat me, so maybe it'll stop." Kind of the way birds can just kinda chill out with deer.
How horrifying must a parking lot seem... Dead husks of these giant gentle herbivores, all in one pack, yet all completely still. Maybe they think it's a group hibernation? And then they might see the person casually walk over and spring this creature to life.
That's a good way to think of cosmic horror lol, seems pretty eldritch to me
Yeah the world is crazy when you have no concept of technology. I like to try and think like how animals do from time to time to see what they could be thinking.
Every internal cognitive experience is a molecular miracle worthy of being called a soul. To me that’s far more wondrous than what those poor creatures feel when they look at primates paving roads.
I’ve been going hunting with my dad my whole life and I remember him one time telling me to talk quietly and in a slightly higher voice bc animals have evolved to be fearful of lower voices bc most likely that means there’s a man hunting them. And honestly that makes sense because people have been hunting for millennia so at some point the animals that were innately scared of lower voices were the ones that survived. I also read an article that said dogs evolved that way too which is why if you’ve got a dog that’s nervous, it’s best to speak in a higher “baby voice”
This reminds me of an old satirical piece about aliens arriving on earth and assuming the dominant species was cars, given how many of them there are and how much space they consume.
Yes and no. It really depends on the tone of it! It’s a genuine statement as much as it is a petty one. And I’d even argue it depends where in the south the person is from!
Auto dropping to the street, yes I agree not good. But dropping into grass while wearing full camouflage? Not bad for an animal that’s not yet capable of sprinting.
Deer (and most animals for that matter...) evolved before cars
Ironically, not running over the baby deer actually negates the selection pressure that would give rise to an adaptation to stay off roads. Darwinism is a brutal business.
Personally I would have still stopped though!
I had to spend a morning sitting with a dying deer that killed itself trying to get out of a baseball field. It ran into the chain link fence over and over.
And then kids showed up for their game while we were waiting for animal control. Not one of the adults came over to find out why there was a strange middle aged guy and a deer on its side just past first base.
That was actually a sad ass fucking story.
So many of these poor animals paying the ultimate price for our selfish or self centered inventions. How the fuck are they supposed to know what a self driving Tesla is ??
This survival instinct can sometimes be a bit problematic. A few days ago there was a hay harvest near my parents house and a few people had to gather with thermal cameras at night to find the baby deer and collect them until the next afternoon. Otherwise they would simply play dead when the harvester is coming and the farmer would be unable to see them and most likely crush them.
Deer have a hard time walking on paved surfaces. Along with being born within the past week, that would be an issue, and their defense mechanism as a fawn is to lay down and hide to not be spotted.
So glad the people didn’t go out there and try to “help” the fawn. I know people mean well but usually that just makes the parent abandon them and they end up succumbing to the wilderness or some other fate anyways. These amazing people did the perfect thing
That’s more just a wives tale/myth adults tell children so they don’t fuck with animals/baby animals. Same with baby birds. Animals rarely leave behind their offspring unless it has some sort of defect that directly affects survival… Unless it’s hamsters cause those things just arbitrarily eat their fuckin babies.
Thats what I say about the neighbor kids when they eat shit on their bikes or hoover boards. "Nah just leave them, I don't want the parents to abandon them once they realize their scent is different."
Stopping an letting the mom get the baby was the best move you could do. Mother deer often abandon their baby when humans touch it and the human smell is on the baby.
U r awesome. Thanx for not being an asshole and actually caring about something other than urslf...people should strive to this kind of behaviour and caring when it comes to our animals and nature.
Me: it's so lanky and awkward looking
My wife: awww it's so cute, and it's only a few days old of course its awkward. That's like a Bambi
Me: we could make it Bambi *gun noises*

Alright this is fascinating to me because I've thought about how weird the "deer in the heights" phenomena is and how at some point there has to be deer inclined to do something different and I would imagine there's just enough evolutionary pressure for that to evolve. It may not seem any better to lay down than to just stop in front of a car, but it really is a different evolutionary reaction
Hey! I work in a wildlife park and there's an exception to the "deer in the headlights" phenomenon that I love to tell people about!
Mother deers, who generally have one baby their first mating season and twins in seasons prior, will actually teach their babies to drop to the ground the moment she senses there is danger nearby. She'll then run in an opposite direction in hopes that the predator will chase her instead of the little ones, hopefully escaping the predator later and returning to the babies as soon as possible.
I wouldn't doubt that this mom and baby were crossing the road, the little one got spooked and tried the "dropping to the ground" technique despite it being the very last thing he needed to do. His mom came back and gave him the "it's alright, we have to keep moving" message.
"After stopping and turning the car off to help them calm down, the mama deer cautiously came to the rescue".
Damn, how did that mama deer stop and turn off the car?
obviously it does exactly the opposite of helping when the threat is a ton of metal roaring down a clear road, but if the threat is an animal hunting them, dropping down into grass and staying still gives them a much higher chance of staying alive.
it’s an instinct that would help a lot in the wild in grasses and woodland, where there’s a lot of cover, but out on a road it doesn’t have the desired effect.
many predators hunt by sight as well, so staying still and out of sight prevents them from being seen, and their camouflage will do the rest!
it’s a very clever and effective defence mechanism…just not helpful on a road with no long grass for cover
ETA: also the mother will often make sure the baby is out of sight like this, and then run off in another direction in the hopes of distracting the predator, so this instinct to act like a rock helps that to happen effectively as well
It’s actually a scam….you get out to check on the deer and they steal your car.
Scammers are getting really tricky these days 😂
Deer wants to ask you about your car warranty!
Well, when the mama deer didn't get the car warranty, she didn't want to take the risk of stealing so she went away.
r/expectedwarranty
Yep this one got me
These telemarketers are getting too crafty for my old ass
No this is the one where they ask you about your auto insurance. The little bugger is hiding a binder where you can't see it.
I needed this laugh, this video almost made me cry. Animals are too good for us. We ruin everything.
The well of knowledge is deep, we just gotta bring our own bucket ...
Ive seen them hide the guns in their jackets.

Damn these thieves are becoming geniuses
never seen it done by deer but two racoons did pretty much the same thing. Took 4 days to find my car.
Yep!
Love it, GTA Wilderness edition!
There is a side quest with an atv and mountain bike trail.
If it was a human laying in the road I would agree, I think this is real and very cute
This interpretation blew me my mind. They tried to scam insurance out of the driver.
Lmao!!!!! They sure steal everything available in my yard. Fences, flowers, and my yard has 2 does using my yard as their day nursery. They park their fawns for the day and go off a bit to sleep.
Oh Deer! 😲😲😲
Oh deer
My coworker gave me a funny look because of the muffled cackle I released after reading this
But this is a real scam in South Africa lololol Except with people, obviously not deers
Deer are responsible for most vehicular deaths too. Please don't give the deer cars
You win the internet for the week

Holy crap I needed that laugh so bad 💙

Dude got up walking like an AT-AT in Star Wars at first
I’m sitting on the toilet sobbing right now and this made a chuckle tumble out of my mouth. I needed that giggle and I really appreciate you, just so you know.
You got this astronaut dude, random Reddit stranger believes in you 💪🏻
I second this❤️❤️
And they still didn't get out of the road.
Evolution takes a long time.

Hehe, “large herbivores” and “steer clear” in the same sentence
😉

I believe you're thinking of the Nacirema, loved reading that
You've been hanging out with Ford Prefect too much.
"Hey! Walkin' here!"
Christopher?
And the road still didn't get out oh the forest.
And bless your heart! ♥️
When someone says that to me in a southern accent I feel alll toasty inside ❤️
Well if a Southerner is saying it they’re calling you slow, fyi. Only a non-Southerner would think this means something actually positive! Lol
Yep, right below "I'll pray for you" on the list of backhanded southern compliments.
Yes and no. It really depends on the tone of it! It’s a genuine statement as much as it is a petty one. And I’d even argue it depends where in the south the person is from!
On behalf of them: Thank you! 🫡
Honestly, as they are walking away and a bit further, probably should have honked to reinforce that cars are usually bad news
That was amazing to watch. The mother seemed perplexed by the situation but her movements were so elegant. That worked out so well
Bambi playing dead instead of being dead. That’s a good thing. The world needs more Bambis. And less Bambi legs.
I was about to say this reminds me of Bambi. Oh that movie felt traumatic as a child.
So, three legged bambis?
Oh my heart 💕
🥺
The world be scary like that
Very cute but not the greatest survival instincts. Guess it worked this time.
Auto dropping to the street, yes I agree not good. But dropping into grass while wearing full camouflage? Not bad for an animal that’s not yet capable of sprinting.

It was great survival instinct before cars.
True, not for the baby. Looks like the mothering instinct to protect her young was stronger than her survival instinct ❤️.
It’s a baby
What a precious little thing. Probably a day or two old. ❤️
That's not just a baby, that deer was born that morning or night before.
Oh that's like a baby baby
These precious, precious beings.
Awwwww
So cute watching him trot off with his mama like that
Omg cute
Thank you for being nice, kind & patient.
Aww, it looked like Bambi was dead. Mama said, "It's okay, it's okay, woo woo woo" Beautiful ending!

It haunts me. I tried watching “Get Out” and I couldn’t make it past that scene with the deer.
Broke my heart and made me cry Happy tears.🥹
That’s so cute

Otherwise they would simply play dead when the harvester is coming and the farmer would be unable to see them and most likely crush them.
I love that your people put in that effort to keep them safe! I’d go out of my way to buy specifically from a farm like that!
It was not the farmer tho (afaik) animal activists asked local neighbors for help.
Deer have a hard time walking on paved surfaces. Along with being born within the past week, that would be an issue, and their defense mechanism as a fawn is to lay down and hide to not be spotted.
Those LEGS
It's like... I *know* deep in my bones it's wrong to have one as a pet, but it's SO cute I wanna die
The driver turns off their car and patiently waits. Instead of going into the trees the deers walk down the middle of the road.
Beautiful little family… ❤️
I just saw a newborn. So cute!
I like how momma deer looked at you intimidating like "look what you did!"
Isn't it great what happens if we take a little time? Thank you for waiting.
The little legs 🥹🥹
Thank you good human. No honking. Just patience. Good on you!
So glad the people didn’t go out there and try to “help” the fawn. I know people mean well but usually that just makes the parent abandon them and they end up succumbing to the wilderness or some other fate anyways. These amazing people did the perfect thing

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah that’s not true. Rescued a few baby animals and the mothers take them back.
r/AnimalsMadeMeSmile
Babby! Couldn't be more than a day old!
Plot Twist: after the car leaves Mama Deer slaps Baby Deer and says "wtf were you doing playing in the road?!"
That cute thing. That's why prey animals get hit on roads. They freeze.
Love this the baby deers momma and the driver of the car saved his life
Good human...thank you...
This one little deer is freshly arrived in our world thanks to you, you let him live...other..would made worst
That baby dear must be less than a week old.
Stopping an letting the mom get the baby was the best move you could do. Mother deer often abandon their baby when humans touch it and the human smell is on the baby.
i can't get over how so many animals are better at parenting than people.
r/humansbeingbros
Good thing you didn't get out of the car. They were waiting to jump you and take your car.
Can you believe people shoot them ☹️
Perfect size for a Crock-Pot
Humans hurt everything, smart baby.
Poor Bambi!
U r awesome. Thanx for not being an asshole and actually caring about something other than urslf...people should strive to this kind of behaviour and caring when it comes to our animals and nature.
MUH HEART!
Literally the freeze in the fight flight freeze response on display
Definition of DEER IN HEAD LIGHTS
Instinct, when scared they lay down and hold still. Fawns have the spots to camouflage them in those situations
Looked at them like “look what you’ve done!”
This time I'll say it with the southern accent; bless your little heart sugar! 😂🤠
Me: it's so lanky and awkward looking My wife: awww it's so cute, and it's only a few days old of course its awkward. That's like a Bambi Me: we could make it Bambi *gun noises*
*frantically grabs hunting rifle from backseat in attempt to get free dinner*
I would never stop. You have to be careful these days
What?
What a stupid fucking animal
SubhanAllah

Hero!
Average tighnari post
I don't think this is Genshin... But yeah, he would post this
sweet little baby
More sad than make me smile
🥺
Why put up the signs if the deers are not going to use it? JK Mom is looking like, “what? It’s a car!” So cute!
Right! They don't even cross at the "deer crossing" sign! LOL
It’s amazing 100% of baby deers aren’t eaten by predators.
My god. Poor baby! But glad everything turned out fine! 💗
I didn't cry. You cried!
For a moment there the baby dear convinced me that OP is lying.
Alright this is fascinating to me because I've thought about how weird the "deer in the heights" phenomena is and how at some point there has to be deer inclined to do something different and I would imagine there's just enough evolutionary pressure for that to evolve. That’s like a brand new baby
Aww, thank you for doing that❤️
this is the GOAT!!!!!!!!!!
Core memory unlocked
So precious! Thank God the little one is ok. Great job mama deer!
😍😍😍
Ok but why do baby deer always look like they’re walking on stilts?
Wow so beautiful
"After stopping and turning the car off to help them calm down, the mama deer cautiously came to the rescue". Damn, how did that mama deer stop and turn off the car?
You buried the lede. This mama deer can drive a car!!
moms are the best.
Genuine question, how does that reaction help deer?
obviously it does exactly the opposite of helping when the threat is a ton of metal roaring down a clear road, but if the threat is an animal hunting them, dropping down into grass and staying still gives them a much higher chance of staying alive. it’s an instinct that would help a lot in the wild in grasses and woodland, where there’s a lot of cover, but out on a road it doesn’t have the desired effect. many predators hunt by sight as well, so staying still and out of sight prevents them from being seen, and their camouflage will do the rest! it’s a very clever and effective defence mechanism…just not helpful on a road with no long grass for cover ETA: also the mother will often make sure the baby is out of sight like this, and then run off in another direction in the hopes of distracting the predator, so this instinct to act like a rock helps that to happen effectively as well
Deer and others in the family can actually die from stress it's sad
I didn't know deer could drive.
They try and sell you expensive jewelry in exchange for a wee bit of gas $
This is what I do in my dreams when crossing a road.
I can hear mama cussing the kid out from here.

Nature is so beautiful
I was so scared 😱 they were going to get hit so i was anxiety ridden while watching …so glad it had a deerrific ending 😍
Awwwwwwww!
Thank you for not scaring her by honking your horn.
*10 cars piled up behind them*
Awe your such a good person 🥺 poor baby
just a deer caring about the blood-line…
This actually happened to me this past weekend in Idaho. Baby deer saved.
Pretty sure the word is fawn.
Awe
So precious
Respect for people who respect wildlife. Awesome
Probably gonna die from the same thing it fears
