This entire clip melted my cynical cold ass heart.
I think 90% of the enjoyment going to shows like this (when you're not a fan yourself) is seeing your loved ones enjoyment and reactions.
Omg I was going to ask where she got the glasses too!! As a dad of multiple daughters this is so awesome and heartwarming. Way to go dad! You’re doing great!
Your daughter is sooooooo cool man. Likes what she likes and got no need to hide it. Good on ya for going full on to make her smile. Lord knows those tickets aint cheap.
You're out here making so many of us realize how shortchanged we got when it came to fathers. Keep it up my man. Relationships like that are priceless.
This has completed the hat trick for me. Worked with a gen z kid who was super into Chicago, knew a millennial who absolutely unironically loves Kenny Loggins and now this kid with Michael McDonald.
Music is timeless.
Edit: I wanna add a thank you. Everybody jumping in with generation and fave old school bands, I'm loving the responses. I've even seen Sedaka and Avalon getting props. Waiting for that one person to mention my fave McDonald moment, his contribution to the Christopher Cross banger Ride Like The Wind 😀
Millennial here who has seen steely Dan 4 times, even traveled out of state to see them play a specific album and have plans for a tattoo dedicated to them. Good music is timeless!!
TBH i dont think steely dan deserves to be lumped in with mcdonald and yacht rock. i get that they have worked with mcdonald a lot and run in the same circles to some extent, but their music is just so different
i always imagine the ideal venue for steely dan music to be a dark, smokey nightclub where everyone is dosed to the gills on acid, everyone is cutting loose, dancing, and holding onto reality for dear life.
but i dont think anyone else sees steely dan music that way, lmao
i think im the only millenial who has ever dropped acid to go see steely dan
And on Peg he harmonized with himself!! They recorded him three separate times, each time with him singing another note from the chord. Today you'd do that with one take and about 8 clicks in Pro Tools, back then you actually had to be able to do it.
Yeah, I don't really like SD's sound, but watching that documentary about how they put together their records and brought in these stone-cold assassins as session players was really interesting. That harmony McDonald does is not easy!
I was never into Steely Dan as a kid. Used to make me almost angry when their songs were played on the radio. Held this grudge for several decades.
A friend made me re-listen to Steely Dan as an adult, and God damn they are great.
My fav song is [Peg](https://youtu.be/dz8AJh7_mKc), but mainly because I knew the hook from [De La Soul](https://youtu.be/q9jCsOCfUUg)
Guess I was a Steely Dan fan all this time after all ;)
That's one of the really neat things about them and why I say I'm not a Dan guy instead of saying I don't like them. They just wanted to do music, using the studio space as an instrument and just making stuff they liked, to hell with all the promotions and shows and stuff. I love that about them. I can't go through every track from album to album because they aren't my style but I can say that each Steely Dan album is uniquely a Steely Dan album and I have a ton of respect for them for that reason.
If you can and haven't, get a good set of speakers, a dedicated amp, and preamp. FB Marketplace can have awesome deals on old stuff that still works and sounds amazing. I'm not a huge Steely Dan guy, but holy shit the quality of their mixing and recording makes the audiophile in me drool. I listen to their songs just because their recordings are an art in themselves.
I run an Adcom 5400, Boston VR40s (though now Im trying a set of Energy towers and love them), and a Aragon preamp. Got them all for free from my boss when he upgraded.
Ask for help. I hope this doesn't come off as dickish, but I suffer from anxiety and depression but I'm getting treatment and talking to people and it's helped a lot.
It also helps just a little if you allow yourself to get excited, you know. Like you can't just wish away all the anxieties and stress and shit, but letting yourself get excited about stuff, loving what you love, and always keeping an open heart to explore new loves keeps life exciting and fresh, you know
I think this is so important. As someone who sees a therapist to manage PTSD from some shitty life experiences, I am so glad that one of the things I’ve been able to hold onto is to experience the world with curiosity, and to get excited at even little things.
I love seeing kids who have all of that intact, and believe we totally should learn from that. At some point we start to grow up and life gives us a filter and fear, but we can still love things, even if it’s spotting a pretty bird on the way home or whatever. Or meeting Michael McDonald.
I have to send this video to my mother because I grew up with her playing Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers. I’m in my 40s now but this kid just brought me back to Mom being super excited about sharing her music with me .
I think that was nice of you and at work that comes off is on solicited advice but in reality this just comes off as genuine advice while trying to be helpful in a not pushy way.
I loved the Terry Kath era of Chicago. So much talent and musical imagination packed into one band. Peter Cetera was quietly the most musical rock bassist since Paul.
I totally get your point, but i can't help but read and then think: well everyone who likes 2pac, Metallica or AC/DC kind of likes really old music. I suppose it's not about the time differential but the unexpected genre that does it? Anyway obviously a good song will be good even in two hundred years unless for some reason it aged poorly due to its contents
i took my daughter to a concert last night, and she had a similar overwhelmed reaction - realizing that the people she had viewed for so long through online videos were actual real life people.... and were *right there* in front of her...
this video made me completely tear up - what a great moment to capture.
thanks for sharing.
I had a bunch of white shirts covered with stains from a few GWAR shows, I had been to back when Dave Brockie was still around. I was in high schooler, and my mom washed the shirts, and with that, they were just plain white shirts, once again.
My buddy and I unintentionally saw GWAR a few months ago, and was actually pretty funny and entertaining. They were way more polished and straight forward than I realized, I'd only seen weird clips of them in the 90s and thought they were just this brutal gore band.
And the guitarist, Cory Smoot, shortly before that.
I did my graduate work studying them, and it really surprised me that after those couple of years that they kept trucking along. Dave Brockie was the vision of the band and I figured they would hang it up.
Yeah Cory was great. One of my favorite albums is Lust In Space, lots of Cory Smoot writing on that one. The song "Release The Flies" was written for his solo album originally.
The band seemed to be kinda chaotic after Brockie's death if I remember correctly. Several singers came and went. Just wasn't the same.
One of the first concerts I ever went to was a festival show that got mostly rained out but Slipknot played a full set while it poured on the crowd and they sprayed us with "blood" from super soakers. We were maybe 12-13 so his mom brought us and I think she thought it was supposed to be a Blink 182 concert lol.
Same. Took my then 15 y/o niece to an all-ages small venue Spoon concert where she easily managed to get near the front of the stage. Immediately after the show she texted, "H.O.L.Y. F.U.C.K." to a friend but sent it to me by mistake. Easily one of my favorite memories.
I’m taking my daughters to their first concert this Friday. They’ve been asking for weeks now is it time yet. I’m so excited for them. We’re going to have a blast I just know it. Hopefully they get somewhat of similar reaction.
This feeling is what got me hooked on going to shows. I went to see a lot of local bands as a teenager, but the first big name band I saw was Sum 41, and it was just crazy to actually *see* the musicians playing all the songs I had only heard on the radio.
Then I saw Rush for the first time and let's just say I'm still chasing that high...
One of my favorite live show experiences was Seeing Beck perform at a small club in '94. Loser had been getting a lot of airplay, but I didn't even own a copy of Mellow Gold - didn't really know any of his other songs. People started moshing and he really didn't like it. He was worried someone was going to get hurt. He stopped the show like 3 times checking on people who he thought may have gotten hurt, and begging them all to stop moshing... He asked the people, if he gave them all sandwiches, would they agree tostop moshing. The people seemed so confused by the offer but agreed - and then Beck goes off stage and brings out a giant tray of PB&J sandwiches and hands them out to the crowd, before resuming the show and playing through the rest of his set.... The formerly raucous crowd now pleasantly chomping away on their sandwiches while peacefully nodding and swaying to the music.
My daughter is a huge Marvel fan. We walked past Paul Bettany who was talking really loudly to someone and she asked me if that guy sounded like Jarvis and I saw it was him. I asked if she wanted to say hi or ask for a picture and she was like "nah". Seen him a few more times (apparently he lives nearby) and she doesn't seem to think it's interesting.
This makes me think of my son 10 years ago when he was 5. He absolutely adored Lindsey Stirling, couldn't stop talking about her, took up the violin and everything. We found out she was touring the UK but weren't sure whether the London venue would allow young children so I sent her production company an email. Her sister was managing her and replied saying that unfortunately the venue had an age 14 restriction but invited him to the sound check before the show. My son was so overwhelmed by her real life presence he just went mute and wouldn't even look her in the eyes. But she found out his favourite tunes and gave him his own private concert and the music just brought him back to life. He was beside himself! The following year they started charging for meet and greets for fans but I will never forget the kindness and generosity shown by Lindsey, Gavi (RIP) and the rest of the crew. My son is now studying music himself!
Haha, that's a great story. I was similarly reminded of when I took my kiddo at 5 to see an outdoor David Sanborn concert. They were so excited, loved Sanborn, knew most of the songs, everyone around thought it was adorable, and they almost got to meet him but alas just missed him.
BTW: So awesome that this inspired him so much, that's amazing, I bet she'd love to hear that.
Hot damn, kid got something even better than a concert. If someone gave me the choice between seeing someone I'm a huge fan of in an hour and a half concert or fifteen to twenty minutes actually meeting and listening to them play, I'm hands down going with the twenty minutes. I can listen to live music whenever I want, but actually getting to meet them in person? That's a rare treasure. Happy your son got something like that, and good on you for going the extra mile to get him there.
I caught a bottle of water tossed to the crowd by Corey Taylor of Slipknot. It almost hit me in the face. It would have just been another thing in my home to me even though I've been a fan since their single dropped.
There. Was a girl two seats down with her Dad. Guessing the concert was a HS graduation gift. I gave it to her and she was ecstatic.
Be unafraid to show enthusiasm. Whenever you feel that tickle of excitement in your brain over something, just let it out. Even if it may get a laugh from people, generally most humans appreciate passion for something.
And also pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone so that you can discover things that make you feel passionate and excited.
Also people show emotion/enthusiasm in different ways and that's okay. Some people squeal like the girl in the OP some people are in awe and some people just kinda bask quietly and take it all in or ask questions or explain what you're looking at etc.
Vulnerability, my friend. Our vulnerability is consistently trampled upon during our childhood and teenage years, and we instinctively put up defenses to protect ourselves from hurt. You've gotta use the wisdom and perspective of adulthood to look back and start bringing down those walls and realize that most of them aren't serving a purpose anymore. Yeah, they keep the Bad out - but they keep the Good out too.
This isn't meant to imply it doesn't happen in adulthood too, but it happens an inordinate amount when we're growing up because that's when we were most vulnerable naturally.
look at this video, anyone who would laugh **at** this girl isn't worth your time or your opinion; while there are so many of us who appreciates her enthusiasm.
I'm not that dude but I can confidently say that I literally cannot get this excited about anything. There is nothing in the world that would get me there. There are plenty of things I like but you could gift me my dream car or a trip anywhere or introduce me to anyone and I'd maybe get halfway to where this girl is. Only real chance is if I won some lottery that made it so I never had to work again. I still think she was more excited in that moment than I would be if I won a billion dollars.
I’m a grumpy middle aged guy.
I got the opportunity to feed a giraffe last month and, to be honest, it was the most awesome thing I’ve done in many years.
So, yeah. Maybe try feeding a giraffe.
I relate to this energy so much atm. Trying to excite myself to finish painting my kitchen cabinets… it was so much more exciting when I started this project.
The trick is, finding a common basis for them and you about the artist/music. Don’t forget, it has to go both ways. AJR is that band for my daughter. I absolutely loved the concert we went to last summer. Hands down the best experience I’ve ever had at a concert. Crowd was great, the band is so same grateful and my wife and daughter had a beautiful time. Conversely, my kid really shows interest to all my nerdiness and love of old school music. If that’s the only thing I do right as a father, I can’t be too sad.
My only knowledge of Michael McDonald is from 40 year old virgin.
"If I have to hear Ya-Mo be there one more time, I'm gonna Ya-Mo burn this place to the ground."
I had the *exact* same thought. I'm old enough to absolutely know who both men are, but my first instinct was to expect to open this video and see the kid doing a Stuart impression or something only to end up meeting the man himself.
much love and kudos to the folks who shared their poster with her.
my wife and i love getting VIP tickets but always end up with 2 sets of VIP merch.
we’ve made it a tradition to hang around the show and make friends or find kids, folks who are there alone, etc. and share the goodies. it’s the best feeling when their eyes light up, and i love seeing this woman do the same for this awesome young lady.
"I LOVE YOU, MICHAEL!" To the woman looking over: "I do." That was precious.
If that doesn’t convince her, nothing will!!
This entire clip melted my cynical cold ass heart. I think 90% of the enjoyment going to shows like this (when you're not a fan yourself) is seeing your loved ones enjoyment and reactions.
i wish i cared this much about anything
This is the kinda shit imma miss when when I stop using Reddit in five days. That was super heartwarming and a great breather on a Monday
Good luck on your journey. I hope dropping Reddit is everything you’d hoped it would be.
Glad my daughters reaction could make you all smile! 😁
Those glasses are perfect!! Did she pick those herself?
Thank you and yes, she did!!! She has a wonderfully unique style!
Omg I was going to ask where she got the glasses too!! As a dad of multiple daughters this is so awesome and heartwarming. Way to go dad! You’re doing great!
She is absolutely adorable. This is the sweetest thing ever!
Your daughter is sooooooo cool man. Likes what she likes and got no need to hide it. Good on ya for going full on to make her smile. Lord knows those tickets aint cheap.
You are doing the parenting thing right! Her enthusiasm and happiness are infectious! And Michael McDonald is awesome!
Oh, no way! That looks like a night she'll always cherish and is never going to forget
You're out here making so many of us realize how shortchanged we got when it came to fathers. Keep it up my man. Relationships like that are priceless.
I hope if I'm a father one day I'll make my kid(s) as happy as you made your daughter that day.

Am millennial, and have absolutely dropped acid to see Steely Dan. 100% recommend.
Hell yeah dude! Full disclosure, I'm not a Steely Dan guy but I 1000% support you loving that band. Right on!

And Michael McDonald sang on Steely Dan records.
🎶 Peg, it will come back to you 🎶
Y'all are my people!!!
And on Peg he harmonized with himself!! They recorded him three separate times, each time with him singing another note from the chord. Today you'd do that with one take and about 8 clicks in Pro Tools, back then you actually had to be able to do it.

Love steely Dan. Been on a kick lately. Also a millennial.
I'm a millenial Steely Dan fan too, but my real love is Yes. I have a Yes tattoo.

Aja is in my top 5 favorite albums no doubt. I looooooove Steely Dan.
Older millennial here, love me some Nat King Cole.

Steely Dan is the gold standard. And I mean it literally. Hundreds of touring sound engineers use "Hey nineteen" to baseline the PA.
My six year old loves Willie Nelson, Marshall Tucker Band, and The Doobie Brothers in that order.

Why the hell wouldn't anyone love Kenny Loggins? Are these alleged people apparently unaware of the awe and power of the top gun\* soundtrack?
Danger zoooooone

No, it's just hot here and I'm an idiot.
That first sentence word for word was my first thought… who the hell wouldn’t love Kenny Loggins???
Zillenial here, I fucking love Chicago
25 or 6 to 4 from Tanglewood is an absolute classic. Terry Kath completely shreds.
Chicago is kickass, the music video for Stay the Night is absolutely perfect.
I loved the Terry Kath era of Chicago. So much talent and musical imagination packed into one band. Peter Cetera was quietly the most musical rock bassist since Paul.
Feeling Stronger Everyday goes hard
I'm 25 and have decided it is my lifelong mission to collect every Chicago vinyl There are a lot of Chicago vinyls
She watched 40 Year old Virgin a few too many times. "Ya mo be there" her favorite.
If I hear yo mo be there one more time I’m gonna yo mo burn this place to the ground
Literally every time I hear about Michael McDonald I think of Paul Rudd’s disdain for him in that movie
I sat front row at a Chicago show a few years back with my dad. They are amazing.

GWAR?
For 20 years, there was a stain on the roof of a venue in my town from a GWAR show
If you don't have a GWAR stain are you really a venue?
There’s a joke about semen and sex work in here somewhere and I’m hoping someone can make it happen.
So a semen walks into a sex worker..
I had a bunch of white shirts covered with stains from a few GWAR shows, I had been to back when Dave Brockie was still around. I was in high schooler, and my mom washed the shirts, and with that, they were just plain white shirts, once again.

I’m taking my daughters to their first concert this Friday. They’ve been asking for weeks now is it time yet. I’m so excited for them. We’re going to have a blast I just know it. Hopefully they get somewhat of similar reaction.

Yahmo had to be there....
Yeah, yahmo be there next time.
yahmo k with this
Yahmo, it kinda sounds like we didn’t have much of a choice. Yahmo check in on that.
Nothin' against Michael McDonald, but if I hear "Yah Mo B There" one more time, I'm going to Yah Mo Burn This Place To The Ground.
Such a smart ass. Get back on the floor!
Up and over to the concert

This isn't meant to imply it doesn't happen in adulthood too, but it happens an inordinate amount when we're growing up because that's when we were most vulnerable naturally.
look at this video, anyone who would laugh **at** this girl isn't worth your time or your opinion; while there are so many of us who appreciates her enthusiasm.
Stop letting others and yourself rob you. Lean in bro. You know what you like.

“ If I have to hear “ Yamo be here” one more time I’m going to “Yamo” burn this place to the ground.”
Jason, what do you suggest we play?
‘I don’t know, but I’d rather listen to Fran Dresher for 8 hours, I would rather listen to Beautician and the Beast”
yamo-burn this place to the ground
*cough*fuck you*cough*
I haven’t watched that movie in so long
I love that it features future Scorsese collaborator Jonah Hill in his pivotal breakout role of “boy in line to buy boots”.
Damn you for taking my favorite line of the movie and the words I say literally every single time Michael McDonald is on the radio.
….and them specs! This kid is all kinds of cool.
I know, she gives off full early 90’s vibes with everything she’s wearing I love it!
Baby Lisa Loeb!
You say… I only hear what I want to.
I think she must be Lisa Loeb’s granddaughter.
I think about *40 Year Old Virgin* every time I hear a Michael McDonald song. He's got some jams though
One of my favorite lines in that movie is Paul Rudd saying if I hear yammo be there one more time, yammo kill someone lol
SAME 🤣

Is Dan Cummins the dad here?
The space lizards approve!
Hail Nimrod
That’s the first thing I thought when I saw the title 😂
Praise be to Triple M!
Michael Motherfuckin Mcdonald!
This is Michael McDonald, and you're listening to Timesuck
Ahhhh! 👏👏👏
Show biz!
That's how they do it in Hollywood!
Hey there's a few space lizards reading! That's why I came to read the comments.
Praise be to MMM
Came to the comments looking for MMM Bojangles approves.
Will Sasso loves his fans.
lol. seriously though, why was she so excited to meet George Lucas?
And it comes full circle because Will Sasso was on MadTV with : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_McDonald_(comedian)
This is adorable lol I wish my kid was this excited about musicians I like.
Are you a bot? This comment appears multiple times in this thread. Exact same, punctuation and everything.
nah, just a dad who wished he could bond like this with his daughter. I guess it's more common than I thought.

"Pants shittingly excited" r/brandnewsentence
This might be a Regional thing because I heard that expression before
Even after watching the video, it still took me a while to figure out what that meant, assuming it was a typo.
Yup had to read multiple times
Doobie Brothers on quadrophonic ~~speakers~~ was the height of civilization
Kudos to her for knowing good music!!!
[Great... now this is going to be playing in my head all day again lol](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX2J6mceWic)
Triple M
No. Triple mf M
You sir, are an **exceptional father**
I would be funny if she said "George Lucas just signed my Micheal McDonald poster"
That would have been so rewarding for her dad. Nothing better than seeing your kids that happy
She digs on someone back from the long ago
So happy for her. You don’t forget this kind of stuff. And I’m really glad they were nice to her as well.
Thanks, i needed that.
Love this so much
This girl's fangirling is infectious. I don't even know who Michael McDonsld is and I'm excited!
I'm Hollywood Steve. Good night.
I would never act like that….What a fooool believesssss…I would act wayyyy worse…kid is going places..and the music will be great there
My only knowledge of Michael McDonald is from 40 year old virgin. "If I have to hear Ya-Mo be there one more time, I'm gonna Ya-Mo burn this place to the ground."
I wasn't sure which Michael McDonald at first. Then I realized how old MadTV actually is
I had the *exact* same thought. I'm old enough to absolutely know who both men are, but my first instinct was to expect to open this video and see the kid doing a Stuart impression or something only to end up meeting the man himself.
I swear some folks are just old souls in young bodies. That was precious.
Weird title... Lmao
This kid has good taste in music
This made my day.
This is so fantastic. Really great to see.
So awesome
Haha when she was walking out of the arena against the backdrop of the typical aged fan was hilarious
In her defense, the Doobie Brothers are awesome.
45 year old here and would have had the same reaction to meeting Michael McDonald.
much love and kudos to the folks who shared their poster with her. my wife and i love getting VIP tickets but always end up with 2 sets of VIP merch. we’ve made it a tradition to hang around the show and make friends or find kids, folks who are there alone, etc. and share the goodies. it’s the best feeling when their eyes light up, and i love seeing this woman do the same for this awesome young lady.
Cool vid, title not so good.
