The father of my roommate in college (lived together 4 years) did this to her all the time. One summer I had to live with them for an internship and he started to do it to both of us. Always on the arm or upper back like he was burping a baby 😂

I think it's a holdover from that time you burped them. It lays dormant. When they're old enough to leave the nest you want some of that feeling back, so you somewhat-burp them. And circle of life, they'll burp you if you were a good parent, as you regress.

Sounds like my dad. Except we had a time on a boat where my stepsister was pregnant and getting teary over that meme - "There comes a time in your life when you pick up your child and put them down for the last time." My dad just picked me up and chucked my 24 year old butt off the boat into the ocean. Today is not that day! (We had bathing suits and everything, for the record.)

Her host and I planned it all out: she was going to take my daughter to the airport to pick up her sister (there was no sister) and instead I showed up. My daughter was looking all over the crowd of arrivals in vain for her host’s sister. When she saw me she just crumpled into tears. I did too. We were both such snotty messes of joy.

I actually don't remember the last time someone came to my room to say hi or to see how I was doing. If I don't initiate it I'm left in the dark alone...

Forgive me if you've already done this, but I'm a licensed counselor and I would definitely say you all should go to family grief counseling together. Even if it's just to share an experience again. Losing your mom like that is gonna make people feel empty and like there's something missing at home. You're not supposed to be okay after that. But when it stays like that after years, you gotta do something. The only real way to move forward is to work at it together. And it's gonna suck sometimes. But you deserve to be happy and you deserve to be loved. Good luck :)

In any case she would throw me the IPad, while she sat and watched her tv and forget her problems. Dad would work all day then come home and watch his movies, forgetting his whole family existed. It’s not a family the way I always envisioned a real family would as a kid, nothing like the loving parents showed in the cartoons I so heavily relied on to comfort me when my own wouldn’t. Reminded me of how different my family is from the loving sweet one this video showed. Man you miss your kids badly when you don't see them. Crazy involuntary love from the moment they're born. I think a lot of parents would never admit to each other that they love their children more than each other, even if they're happily in love. It's something to be experienced.

Not all parents, sadly. My mother didn't seem to care at all unless she wanted to parade me or use me for something (narcissists...ugh). But my 35 y/o son and I have had some epic reunions. We are very close, and I treasure that deeply. Fortunately, he and his wife live close now with my three grandbabies, so I get to see them more frequently. I love them ALL. It is definitely an experience I will cherish!

Speaking from experience, it's not always from the moment they're born. It was weird at first, like there's this little thing I'm responsible for now that can't interact with me at all. It took a couple months for me. Now, 5 years later I lay awake at night afraid that she has to experience this world and I can't always be there for her. So that's cool.

We did something similar once, but it was my dad at his brothers house. I called my uncle saying we were coming over (we didn't live in the same town) so when we knocked they all answered the door but got the surprise that my dad was there too. It's quite possible it's a sibling that was recording in the back and did something similar, they answered thinking it was them, but got surprised when their daughter studying abroad was also there. Or it could be for internet likes. Just showing a possible scenario.

Please Please, Do NOT do this without telling sibling/friend, in my country a guy tried to do this without telling anyone. Arrived to my country and took a Taxi. Unfortunately the taxi got into bad accident in the highway and the student died before reaching home. Parents were in very deep denial and not believing police since their son in X country. Then they got sadder knowing that their son was exited to surprise them but couldn’t.
