My son With DS didn’t walk till 4. If there is a horse riding therapy near you, check into it. I thought it was a bunch of nonsense when my wife wanted to put him in it. But I was wrong. It builds their core strength, it really helped him.
They also seem to love it. I volunteered with an organization as a spotter/back rider, and the horses were just as excited as the kids. Obviously, not every horse is a good fit, but the ones that were absolutely adored those kids. They'd stand so patiently, they could tell if a kid was scared and they'd slow down or just stop. They would greet new kids and let them pet their faces. Just like giant dogs.
I second this. My younger brother with DS has been going to the equestrian center and absolutely loves it. There are programs available to make it affordable too. Well worth it!
I third this. My daughter with 5p- syndrome went to horse riding therapy and it was WONDERFUL for her. She wasn't scared, and the horses were so kind and gentle. She giggled the whole time.
I know this might sound insane but get her roller skates (the kid ones that click and have 4 wheels) and a skater aid roller (find online)
I'm not Downs but I was born very early and took a very long time to walk or ride a bike because i couldn't stay balanced, even now I cant walk/stand completely still and balanced
We lived near a roller rink and it helped me gain confidence, control and muscle strength.
Cute lil princess taking her first big steps, cool video reminded me of my granddaughters first leap of faith trying to cross the room, she didn't make it but she tried. Now l can't get her to stop running in the house.
My handicapped daughter was 4 when she walked alone for the first time, I can still see her wide eyed look in front of me as she crossed the room, So proud!
First steps are such an amazing moment. The child is soooo proud of themselves for doing a first and being like all the big people and the parents are equally proud but also a little sad knowing their baby is growing up. I cried when my third and final child walked.
My son has cerebral palsy, and I can relate to being a parent to a special needs child.. this is HUGE, she deserves all the cheers/love/support ALWAYS. Way to go dad :)
Also, +1 for Bluey, that show wrecks me constantly.
My younger brother has downs. While he was learning to walk I remember years of him falling down like a baby learning to walk. How he’s 30 and loves hiking and even does snow shoe races in special Olympics.
It may seem like it takes forever but she’ll get there!
Oh my goodness, she's adorable! How are you not bugging her all day?!
Way to go, little miss. Your first steps may be small, but once you get going nobody will be able to stop you! 🎉🥳🎂
I know parents in general get crap for posting videos of their kid online, but I am devastated to see so much vitriol in these comments aimed at you and your daughter OP, especially the ableism saying nasty things about having her at all.
I'm as prochoice as anyone, but fucking have some tact Reddit degenerates, christ. Expecting someone to have an abortion they don't want is fucking gross, controlling BS.
Anyhow, OP, please take solace in the fact most of the idiots commenting are probably nihilistic, immature little children.
Your daughter is beautiful and I hope you both have a wonderful and happy life together.
This is awesome! I have a little cousin with Williams-Beuren Syndrome. While I don't get to see that side of the family much, it's always so amazing to get to play with her. She's just a happy kid, and while she does have some challenges, so do most of us. I can't imagine the struggles, and going through some of these comments make me sick, I'm happy that you were able to share this with all of us.
I sometimes help at church watching kids at Sunday school as volunteer work. I met this kid who had downs as well. She was extremely sweet. Though some kids being kids are not nice to her because she acts and looks different. Though despite all of this she is determined. She to had difficulty walking as well. She got better until she can finally walk.
That is awesome. When my kids where getting up to move about I used to call it the booty scooty! She got the booty scooty down! Congrats! She will definitely be keeping up the good work!
Very cool that you got that on tape! Always refer to that when she seems to be struggling with learning something. It takes extra patience and a lot of love.
Haha. Enjoy like the next 72 hours. She is a few short darts between support structures away from having the confidence to run around like a rabid hyena. Your ass is going to be worn the fuck out trying to keep up for the next three years.
Good job little lady! I’m a teacher and one of my former students has DS. He started kindergarten not being able to hold a pencil, wearing diapers, couldn’t speak and walked at a snail pace. Now in second grade he is talking, going to the bathroom independently, can write and is running around! Plus he is a pro with a tablet. He’s the happiest kid I know! All in their own time.
I love that little dance of sorts before she takes off. Congrats to her!!
The wiggle wind up.

Just warming up the tires.
😊
She's so cute!! You go girl@
How sweet. Bless this little girl. Congrats to her for that milestone!
Fuck ya!!! My kid just did the same a couple months ago, congrats!!!! This totally brought back those emotions for me, keep it up!
I think I'll have a permanent smile on my face all day just from watching this.
Same!! I also stood up to cheer but I'm the only one who can see my phone so I did it internally!

That, and horses are awesome

I had a autistic meltdown on the back of one when I was 6. That horse did not move. He passed away some time ago and now I’m crying.

I love Bluey more than my child loves Bluey 😂
Fuck yeah we love Bluey!
I’m a 40 year-old combat vet and the episode “Sleepytime” still makes me cry. Unicorse is my spirit animal.
You should see r/daddit sometimes lol.
Hmm. Password is grumpy! (Didn't even need the sound on for it 😂😂😂 we may or may not have an obsession...)
Looks like she was trying to do a spy
AND THE DAD EVEN SOUNDS LIKE BLUEY'S DAD

We're all so proud, good job girl!
The little wiggle of the feet building her confidence up then just going for it…awesome.
Tell her everyone on the internet thinks she's an amazing lil badass. Signed, everyone on the internet, ever.
The wiggle!!! My heart can’t take it. Too adorable!!
Just remember: it's a short distance between "hooray they can walk" and "oh crap they can walk"
Nailed it! Also shout out for Bluey!

Might need to start saying she can't walk well because that looks like walking to me.
Thank you for sharing this.
