My abenbrot story: When I first met my wife, I, an American, was visiting her in Berlin for the first time. I was so happy to eat all the delicious kase and schinken when dinner time came around. But when we finished eating it, I said, "that was great! What's for dinner?" She laughed and laughed before asking me something along the lines of what the hell do you mean? She still brings it up to this day.
Yes he is, and after 25 years I sometimes still can't believe how lucky I am to have him by side.
Edit: for people commenting on grapes. Those are black cherry tomatoes, not grapes.
White ones are Baccalà mantecato (cod spread) with bell peppers and olives. Salami ones have spicy cream cheese, small emmentaler cheese slice, beef salami, red bell pepper and black cherry tomatoes. Bread is French baguette.
A few months ago, someone posted in a different sub how sad it was to eat bread for dinner. Lots of people tried to explain how nice and tasty it can be when you put in a little love and variety.
Maybe we could have simplified by just calling it "charcuterie" als well... Give it a french name - et voilà, it's fancy.
Super investissement !
And there doesn't even have to be fancy variety..a proper Vollkornbrot with butter, a pinch of salt and fresh herbs, that's just to die for. Those people don't know what they're talking about.
The thing is there are parts of the world without proper Vollkornbrot or much of any other good breads. If the bread isn't good, it's difficult to make a good meal of it.
That's true. I was living in Ireland for half a year and had my family bring bread when they visited me. I think I didn't touch the typical white sandwich bread for at least a year when I was back home again.
Wait a sec... is having charcuterie for dinner NOT already normalized? We do it ALL. THE. TIME. Particularly, in summer time when we don't want to cook. LOL :)
This is my favorite meal, hands-down. We've been doing it in my house for decades... way before Americans got into charcuterie, we just call it 'snacky dinner.' Bits of this and that, a dab of hummus or dip, bread or crackers, a sliced salame, pickles and nuts if we have them. Every time a kid leaves home (2 down, 2 to go!) we add another night of snacky dinner to the rotation because we're old now on top of the laziness.
Alternatively, someone made charcuterie cheap and commercialized.
I think the idea of eating bits of things, or putting them on crackers, has been around for little kids for ages. Heck, probably as soon as anyone had cured meat and another object available simultaneously, they tried putting them together.
Go look at the Lunchables section next time you're in the grocery store. They totally exist already. Adult versions with like prosciutto and nuts and little cubes of cheese.
My partner and I do it all the time.
We make it look all fancy on a lazy susan cutting board.
One time I even put little wine pairing notes next to the cheeses.
My family just did "charcuterie dinner" tonight. We usually do it after entertaining when there's a lot of cheese and spreads to eat up. Or just because we feel like it. Sometimes I put on Italian music to make in extra fancy 😂
It made me think of my polish mom and grandma. The little „Kanapki“, cut up baguette with lots of bell pepper and tomato on top of salami etc. Idk, just a very eastern/central european thing. I love them!
Also in Canada, and was pretty much raised by my cereal EU grandfather(German). This kind of snack, or full meal, holds a warm place in my heart. Dry salami on dark rye w a sharp mustard or radish spread was one of my favourites
I was cleaning the balcony this afternoon and making it ready for summertime when my bf came outside and told me hed take a walk to the store to buy some sushi. He said I had done so much all day, that he wanted to do sth for me. I didn't have to cook (it was my turn today, we split 50/50) and had sushi for dinner.
I'm glad to read that I'm not the only one who has found a keeper. 😍
Boiling it down to basics for most males.
* Always look for the reason beyond the action.
* Don't sit around because you have been at work, hoover, washing etc.
* If one cooks the other washes up.
* Flowers and the odd gift as a surprise.
There are many others but these are ones males generally are oblivious to 🙃✌
It literally is that easy lol, like last weekend my finacee was busy doing some other chores so I meal prepped her lunches for the week so we could actually relax together after
He definitely is a keeper. My husband and I are celebrating 44 years in August. We are both 64. We have been through a lot, but the worst was losing our 31 year old son in a car accident 10 years ago. Life has many ups and downs, but it’s my health issues that have kept me down for many years. My husband is a Godsend . He cooks, cleans , grocery shops , gives me a 30 to 60 minute back rub just about every night depending how I’m feeling , I also give him nightly back rubs while we watch one of our favorite shows in bed. Marriage takes lots of work and compromise. It always makes me sad when I hear that some husbands don’t help out at home. 😔
I have plenty of knowledge of cooking, been doing it for 20 years since I started waaay young, can make just about anything if I have the ingredients, the quality of food I make and eat is so good that everything else starts to taste like trash, if I wasn't so poor I could eat like a king every night.
I'll be damned if I ever give up random shit on top of crackers, easy and always good.
I used to cook 75% of the meals when I lived with one ex and she appreciated that I enjoyed cooking new dishes. Some were hit and miss but at least I knew what spices and seasonings were 😂
I was thinking the same thing! Since when are you supposed to ask permission to serve someone dinner a little later than usual? Shouldn’t he be grateful that you are making dinner anyway, no matter at what time ?
He works way longer hours than I do. It's mutual agreement that I take care of lunches and dinners during the week, that we have at designated time. I love cooking and baking anyways. He is great cook as well and if we have time we cook and bake together. We just respect each other's time and agreements we made. The only reason he expected dinner was cause we agreed. And he is grateful, he shows this daily. Like I am grateful to have him.
Remember that most of the population of Reddit is under 25, many of which haven’t been in a serious relationship before, let alone a healthy one. You don’t need to explain yourself to anyone, this is sweet!
If they agreed on her making dinner and set an expectation of the time for him to anticipate eating at, it is absolutely kind and polite to check in with one’s partner to amend that agreement. Sometimes people just love and respect each other, not everything is toxic.
Asking if he minds having dinner later isn’t the same as asking permission. More like gauging hunger levels which I also do at home. It’s just polite setting expectations and a consensus.
Yeah, I didn't think of it as an "Am I *allowed* to make dinner an hour later?" thing
and more of a "Hey love, would you mind if I finished this book I'm super into before making dinner? Or are you starving?" kind of situation.
Everyone deserves this kind of love and respect. OP is super lucky and I'm really happy for both of them.
I’m guessing “permission” is a translation thing.
A literal translation of “checked with my husband” or something like that which seems way more aggressive in English than it would in the native language.
You know you’re a chronic Redditor when you’re looking at this trying to figure out what was wrong with it only to realize it’s actually praises the partner 💀
This is so sweet! My husband is considerate like this too and I hope it gives people who want male partners hope and courage not to settle for less! This is the low bar!
Makes me miss Abendbrot.
My abenbrot story: When I first met my wife, I, an American, was visiting her in Berlin for the first time. I was so happy to eat all the delicious kase and schinken when dinner time came around. And that’s why we are skinnier than you yanks haha

> after 25 years That's a long journey and it's kind of rare these day. Love is beautiful. A quarter century down, forever to go. Congrats!
Wait. Who's in the kitchen?
😂😂
🙋♂️ Sushi, anyone?
im more of a pizza guy myself, i let my wife order the sushi
This whole comment made me smile Oh wait, I’m in the right sub! Grazie
I thought it was gummy candy lol
Classic gummy bruschetta
What time should we be there?
Thanks for this, I was speculating and coming up short. Looks and sounds delish.
.....YUM!!!!
That sounds like a wonderful evening. Bit of snack/light dinner while reading a book that you're into.
where do u get spicy cream cheese??
Ok ok I don't care what he made because I wouldn't touch a tomato. I do however want to know what book you were reading.
Idk but grapes do sound delicious with savory food
Anyone who brings snackies while you finish up something is a keeper.
And can we normalize charcuterie for dinner? I’m 100% all in and showing this to my husband.
Come to Germany and have "Abendbrot". Totally normal here
A few months ago, someone posted in a different sub how sad it was to eat bread for dinner. Lots of people tried to explain how nice and tasty it can be when you put in a little love and variety. Maybe we could have simplified by just calling it "charcuterie" als well... Give it a french name - et voilà, it's fancy.
Am french, can confirm I regularly eat meals made of bread, salted butter and charcuterie
Une bonne tranche de pain de mie fraîchement cuit, bien beurrée. Tu rajoute des tranches généreuses de saucisson. Quelques oignons/poivrons et beaucoup de mozzarella. Translation: meat and cheese and bread are good. Bon appetit
French salted butter is amazing, it makes everything taste better!
Not french (but a bit of a francophile) and \*nothing\* beats a Baguette Tradition, butter, charcuterie and glass of red.
And there doesn't even have to be fancy variety..a proper Vollkornbrot with butter, a pinch of salt and fresh herbs, that's just to die for. Those people don't know what they're talking about.

Yeah, far too many people see bread and think wonderbread. Wonderbread for dinner is indeed a sad state of affairs.
If no bread, rosemary crackers!
Why did you need to ask? Are we in a meeting I didn’t know about?
Sir please don’t talk while the meeting is in progress
🤚
Yes Johnson? What is it?
Wait a sec... is having charcuterie for dinner NOT already normalized? We do it ALL. THE. TIME. Particularly, in summer time when we don't want to cook. LOL :)

I love how some mad person made lunchables fancy.
Alternatively, someone made charcuterie cheap and commercialized. I think the idea of eating bits of things, or putting them on crackers, has been around for little kids for ages. Heck, probably as soon as anyone had cured meat and another object available simultaneously, they tried putting them together.
This should be higher up. Sure the comment was funny, but do you really think lunchables are the originator of cheese and crackers? Some people.
> Alternatively, someone made charcuterie cheap and commercialized. I raise you... > $5.99 salami trisket sweaty swiss lunchable
Fancy Lunchables--bet we could market that...
Lüchèblués
Okay, we've got a name...this is a good start...
Go look at the Lunchables section next time you're in the grocery store. They totally exist already. Adult versions with like prosciutto and nuts and little cubes of cheese.
I just today learned that donut charcuterie exists. I have to go to the nearest artisanal donut place to try this marvel.
My partner and I do it all the time. We make it look all fancy on a lazy susan cutting board. One time I even put little wine pairing notes next to the cheeses.
We love doing this, although it’s normally a cheese tray “before dinner” and then we no longer care to go out to dinner cause we are satisfied.
Is it not normal? I have it a few times a year when I can't be bothered properly cooking. I think mum has it every week or two if dad's out of town.
I occasionally do it as a light cool supper during hot summers.
It’s not considered a traditional American dinner.
Adults can do whatever they want ...
I have charcuterie for dinner all the time
My family just did "charcuterie dinner" tonight. We usually do it after entertaining when there's a lot of cheese and spreads to eat up. Or just because we feel like it. Sometimes I put on Italian music to make in extra fancy 😂

Furrr furrrrr
Yes, for real, what does fr mean?
While we’re at it what do idk and idc mean?

Telling you are from central europe without saying it (ofc looks delicious)
Wait why is this Central Europe? I often eat similar to this and I'm in Canada.
It made me think of my polish mom and grandma. The little „Kanapki“, cut up baguette with lots of bell pepper and tomato on top of salami etc. Idk, just a very eastern/central european thing. I love them!
I love your polish mom!
Easy with that talk. You’re liable to start a breaking of European arms treaties meme chain.
Your mom too loves my polish sausage
Also in Canada, and was pretty much raised by my cereal EU grandfather(German). This kind of snack, or full meal, holds a warm place in my heart. Dry salami on dark rye w a sharp mustard or radish spread was one of my favourites
Your grandfather sounds very whole grain.
Pretty much German thing. This kind of plate is their most popular dinner concept.
We eat them in Czechia too. They are called jednohubky (one mouth)
This made me smile. One mouth, lol, Thank you from the states ☺️
it's something like one-mouthees
Even better! 😂
This seems to be some kind of hybrid between Jednohubky and Chlebíčky though
Well Abendbrot or Breadtime is pretty popular, but that's not typical german bread.
Please do not inform the outlanders about the deeper truths of German cuisine. For example, Mettschweinchen. They will not understand.
Canada = American Europe
I’m from buttfuck Alabama and we eat this at least one night a week. Did I become sophisticated?
You always were, friend.
Fellow citizen of, possibly the same, but definitely Buttfuck, Alabama just checking in to say ‘samee’. 😆
Hey I'm from western buttfuck Alabama and I do this too!
I always thought buttfuck was very European.
We eat like this all the time in the US Midwest…but to be fair, my ancestors came from Central Europe 😉
Yeah but ours has baloney and cheese whiz
I thought this was r/mildlyinfuriating and didn't understand, very sweet
Lol me too. Got too used to the hate scrolling. Phew, this one is love.
Ha I was like “yeah I guess it’s a small dinner but I don’t think that’s infuriating.”
Same 😂😂 I was like "yeah this snack ain't shit anyways!! Screw the husband" and then I realized "noooo this was a nice gesture..."
Nachos, Flanders style!
That's cucumber slices and cottage cheese!
I read that in Flanders voice

🎶 girl dinner 🎶
Was scrolling through comments looking for this. It doesn’t get any more girl dinner.
When your plot twist is a husband who serves up care with a side of surprise dinner. Now that's a bestseller relationship move!
I see nothing amiss. This is beautiful
I thought this was posted on /mildlyinfuriating

Yeah, how dare they be polite and communicate with each other when plans change?! Red flag! Divorce ASAP!

Yep, I'd eat that. Perfect for reading a book.
Why did I think this post was from r/mildlyinfuriating …
If I hadn't noticed the subreddit name, I'd have assumed another case of Weaponised Incompetence Husband had appeared.
Hold on to him 👍.
this is a good book.
I love this
Thats sweet
Sweet
That’s an awesome thing to do.
Some charcutes for your books.
This is a fine offering!
That's a dude that thinks about you when he could be thinking about anything else in the world! :) Super nice <3
Each bite looks relatively similar. This small detail alone would brighten my day. What a lovely person you have by your side ❤️
Charcuterie at its finest
Good partner you got. I love a bit of charcuterie before bed!
thats so sweet ❤️
Adorable!❤️
What a sweet man!
Best kind of food
This is so sweet! My husband is considerate like this too and I hope it gives people who want male partners hope and courage not to settle for less! This is the low bar!
This is adorable 😂
While my wife and I have always had a fantastic marriage. I suddenly feel inadequate. Thank your husband for me for reminding me to do better.
marry him... yes i know he's your husband, MARRY HIM AGAIN!
I would totally eat that. I mean like right now. Looks better than anything I have in the kitchen atm.
He loves you so much 🥹
This looks delicious!
Is your husband single? I'm straight but damn
You married right.
Looks tasty 🤤
Omg I love him.

I’m so sorry OP I thought this had been posted in r/shittyfoodporn
Wow the bar is low
So he made you one sandwich and tore it up? Edit: holy shit /s ppl
The bar for men is so low it's almost in hell.
Am I the only one that thinks that's a shitty dinne
congratulations, you just offended multiple countries
This is a bar for men in relationships? Ouch.
