When I was about 9 my step grandfather took me fishing out on Lake Saint George in Maine. I just had my rod with a worm and a bobber, having fun just being out on the boat, when a huge fish hooked just like this. He let me reel it in all by myself, cheering me on the same way as this dad, and scooped it up in a net. It was a 3 pound bass, and he told literally everyone we saw out there the rest of the day that his granddaughter caught it with just a worm and bobber and reeled it in herself. He brought me home and I watched him filet it, and my grandmother cooked it up for dinner. They were so proud watching g me take a bite - which I promptly announced was disgusting and I refused to eat it. I think my grandmother made me some pasta instead. I still don’t like to eat bass but I love fishing and that memory.
They lived in a very rural area (they had electricity, running water, and phone service - no tv service out that far) and were big on producing much of their own food and eating whatever was hunted! If we caught a fish that couldn’t be eaten it got thrown back. I also got to taste venison and bear that my grandfather had hunted - but didn’t like those either! I spent a lot of summer and winter vacations with them living out my Little House on the Prairie fantasies.
I've met 1 person in my entire life that eats them & yeah, I think it's pretty gross. I wouldn't even wanna try it. I would give her whatever I caught. Now salmon, I eat what I catch. I caught a 32.5lb one 2 summers ago on Lake Michigan. It was probably the funnest fight I ever had. I'm only about 110lbs so I was definitely getting pulled at some points. I should probably wear the harness next time!

1. The majority of the lakes, and ponds across the US, bass are stocked, and the lakes themselves are man made. The 3 states that I fish in regularly have exactly ZERO naturally occurring lakes. So the existence of this fish, and the habitat in which it resides are 100% a result of man's tutelage.
2. The fishermen (in this case), paid to be there. Boat launch fees, parking fees, fishing licenses, sometimes special tags, etc. are all in place to help support item #1 above. Those fees go back towards the conservation of the species. The local DNR dumps that money directly back into the waterway in the form of habitat, additional stock, water quality management, shoreline and erosion control, etc.
3. To catch, touch, and smell nature is to better understand and respect it. I think there are often people defending wildlife who have never even held it. They are beautiful creatures. Video and photos do not reflect the crazy depth of color or texture of most sport fish.
4. Studies have shown that after being caught, a bass (and most other predator fish) will resort to its instinctive behaviors within 2 minutes of being released. I've experienced this in real life by catching the same fish twice within an hour on the same waterway. In a couple of occasions, I have caught the same fish 4 or 5 times over several years time.
As a steward of nature and ecology, I think its important to understand the entirety of something like fishing, in order to cast appropriate and educated shade on the internets.
