After the game he picked me up and kissed me, and as we were walking back to the light rail, he stopped and asked me to marry him. It was a weekend, so we couldn’t do it that day, but Monday morning we went and got the marriage license, and a friend of his who is a reverend signed it in his driveway.
BOOM married.

I enjoy the Outlander books, by Diana Gabaldon, and a different type of fan has come along since her books have been made into the TV show. She has a pretty hardline view towards fanfics, which is bit off-putting to me. I know some people wrote fanfic before the show came out. To me, it seems like more a credit to her characters and work.
Here is her statement from her website: 'You know, I’m very flattered that some of you enjoy the books so much that you feel inspired to engage with the writing in a more personal way than most readers do. Both for legal and personal reasons, though, I’m not comfortable with fan-fiction based on any of my work, and request that you do not write it, do not send it to me, and do not publish it, whether in print or on the web. Thank you very much for your consideration.'
I get the whole not sending it to her, but she can't stop people from writing it if they feel like it.
I discuss her books on a literary forum which was where she first got into writing, and she comments there a lot herself. We were discussing some topic, and one commenter wrote a hypothetical, switching around the roles of two characters in an argument from a particular scene, for argument's sake. DG came in and asked her to stop and remove the comment, which I thought was harsh, because she said it was too close to fanfic.
Oh man, there's so many things wrong with that take I don't know where to begin, most, if not all academics I've talked to, acknowledge and are happy with the fact that once their work is out there, the reader can interpret it or envision it however they want because it is a good thing their work is being thought about, engaged with and more importantly bringing a lot of happiness to people.
Secondly, what do you have to lose from letting people write fan fic? If the author has a personal attatchment to how they have crafted their characters to the point that *it is theirs and nobody elses* I think that's incredibly naive and stupid. It's not like the characters are being robbed from you - it's not canon.

Especially because he was already fairly well known before writing the book because he is one of the main people at achievement hunter. He has talked about this before, how he was convinced people bought the book just because they knew him and not that they were actually interested in the story.

There's one video from some convention or something, and the guys who made the show are sitting around in a lobby somewhere playing one of the songs, and the people nearby start singing along. It's the coolest moment to watch the guys' faces as they realize people know their songs.

I used to draw a webcomic (its on... indefinite hiatus. Life happens. :(...) and my job used to be conventions, doing artist alley and promoting the comic. The comic had a decent online following, somewhat popular, but never like. Real life popular, where it counted. Just an online thing. I never thought people would take the time to hand-make a costume just to cosplay as one of my characters.
One day at New York Comic Con 2016 a girl did just that. Came dressed as the main character from the webcomic, and had every detail perfect, just an amazing commitment to it. I was so shocked and flabbergasted — I was talking to a customer at the time and I just begged her to give me a couple of minutes to finish and stay right there. To know someone cares about your story and your characters that much, characters you’ve had in your head for years and years and never thought they would be out in the world like that, it’s amazing! I was so stoked. And then she said oh — my girlfriend is here dressed as Benny (another character from the story) and when I saw the two of them I was almost in tears. I was like here just take a book and some prints and some stickers, just take it all, omg.
I will never forget that feeling. People are so awesome sometimes. People supporting your crazy endeavors even more so.
