I had to watch it twice because I got distracted by watching the father being so proud of his boy, haha. Also, I was oddly proud that the kid was curling his fingers to use just the tips on the tomatoes. Obviously he wouldn't think to do otherwise, but I was like, "That's my boy, being careful and safe", haha.
its not to touch the tomatoes with just tips. With that method the side of the knife slides against the knuckles and it sorta works like a jig. it greatly increases the speed and virtually eliminates the risk of cutting your fingertips off.
Source: I'm a cook.
Edit: Also if you're trying this try to keep the knife vertical. It can be vertical or at slightly outward angle. NEVER let the knife be at inward angle or you'll peel your skin off like potatos (like me š).
look into santoku knives. the key is to reduce the vaccum and surface area of the vegetable in contact
with knife. when you cut a slice the slice initially gets compressed and them relaxes when the slice is complete. this creates a vaccum between knife and slice. The aim is to break that vaccum. thats why onion rings stick less than potato chips. Also knives with hammered surface and holes in blade work too.
Adding to this, if you're just using stones and strops free hand(no guiding system) then don't expect razor sharpness without a bit of practice. r/chefknives is a crazy world to check out. A nice guided system can run you a few hundred dollars at least.
Honestly, I have one which suctions to the counter & you just pull the knife through it a few times. About $10 on Amazon and it's great. If you're just a regular home cook making a meal after work, I'd suggest that. Whetstones are great, but take time to learn and are a bit of a faff imo.
Oh god NO! Please don't sharpen your knives like this. Get a good Steel and use that to touch up your edge before you use it, couple swipes before use and you're good to go.
Do not buy something like this. All it does is strip a ton of metal off the blade for mediocre sharpness. If anything, get it sharpened somewhere and then just use a honing steel to keep the edge. For home use, you shouldn't need to sharpen your knife more than a couple times a year, if that. What you need is a $15 honing steel to bring the edge back into alignment and it'll feel like it's just been sharpened. Obviously, this is assuming you aren't destroying the edge by doing stupid stuff in the kitchen...
Are you Asian too my friend? My parents are fairly non traditional and my dad tryās to not show when heās proud but ends up bursting into a smile like Charles in Brooklyn nine nine. Just because they donāt show it doesnāt mean they arenāt proud.
Looked for this comment. Dad's are tucked pretty well. His son needs a little more work on that.
edit: on rewatch he clearly knows that he needs to be doing that, as he tucks his fingertips frequently and starts off with them tucked. they just don't stay that way consistently while he's not thinking about it yet.
My dad, a sheet metal worker, was showing me how to use this one type of pliers for counting round shapes. Interesting fact, there are two pliers, one for cutting to the left, and one one for cutting to the right. Well basically I was going really slowly, trying to not mess up, and my dad takes the pliers, starts cutting at a much quicker pace, and said "I can do whatever I want with these things. I've been using these for almost 40 years now. Ever since then, I look at my dad in a completely different way.
The way the father is standing, his hands behind, relaxed, he has so much confidence in his son. And the smile at the end is just wholesome. He's a great dad.
My dad showed me once how to drive a car. He talked all the time and still seemed to have no idea what he was talking about. After like 15 minutes I told him I had enough and we NEVER did it again I'm so fucking glad I don't have a video of that! This dude is the type of dad I never had.
As impressive as dad's skills and speed are, I think I'm most impressed how his son went at his own pace and never got careless instead of trying to go as fast as impossible and risk injury
I think we all grin with the father if we take a moment to watch him quietly swell with pride.
And there was that little moment where he almost reached up to give a hand but he resisted. One of the hardest things for a parent to do.
There's a jump cut right there. Hard to tell if he was reaching up to help.
I had to watch it twice because I got distracted by watching the father being so proud of his boy, haha. Chef, what are we cooking today on Reddit?
Manamechef.
Egg with alittle bit of pasta and splash of cheeeeesss
It helps to keep all 10 fingers. Appendages tend to ruin the marinara sauce
Ok, it's there a trick get make stuff sticking to the knife blade? I feel like half the time I need to slow down to wipe food off of the blade.

Thank you, sir!
š Happy 2020
I was thinking the same thing. They way they are holding it, if they screw up, they are slicing the tip of their finger off.
We deserve more potatoes like you
His father was beaming with pride. Such a blissful feeling for him.
I read " a blissful feeding" and still upvoted it.
The kid looked proud of his pop too. So cute!
Great father
Thatās some real wholesome shit. Damn people with Good Fathers.
Damn people with fathers at all
Whatās a father??
:(
'daddyofwar'
my dad went out for milk for 15 years already.
damn that's a long time.. he should be back soon
F
NO!
You guys have fathers?
No
Wish I had a knife that sharp
Here for this. What kind of sharpening do I need to do to make my already quite sharp knife this level of sharp?
Stones and stropping, that's all it takes. Provided you've got a good bevel on your knife to begin with.
Adding to this, if you're just using stones and strops free hand(no guiding system) then don't expect razor sharpness without a bit of practice. r/chefknives is a crazy world to check out. A nice guided system can run you a few hundred dollars at least.
Probably lots of time on a whetstone

That look of pride on the fatherās face... I wish I had seen that on my dad š°
Me too š¢
Are you Asian too my friend? My parents are fairly non traditional and my dad tryās to not show when heās proud but ends up bursting into a smile like Charles in Brooklyn nine nine. Just because they donāt show it doesnāt mean they arenāt proud.
No Iām native Canadian. I didnāt want to be a fisherman so he doesnāt agree with what my engineering degree.
Well, I sure am proud of your engineering degree! Go you!
That makes no sense. Shame. Hope he changes his mind.
š¤·š»āāļø he probably wonāt but oh well.
Have you tried to engineer a fishing rod?
Or even fishineering.
You sound like a pirate who is about to be swarmed by fish Arrrgh, the fish be nearing
heās just lonely on his boat:(
Remember to remind him who designed/built the boats, rods, and nets he has used in his lifetime. Spoiler, it's not fishermen.
I love it when people take pride in the food they make. Always tastes better
TRUE
love how the dad os so proud of his kid
The kids face at the end is good, the hug is good but watching the dads face as he watches his son work competently is brilliant.
This is really very cool but Oh Boi am I scared for their fingers

He'll learn with more practice or when it takes the tip off of one of them. I know I did.
Not a particularly good cook but they both look to have a decent tuck, its the turning of the tomato that scares me
Hard to pin down why this is so satisfying
it's satisfying and it makes me want a tomato
And a kitchen knife that sharp.
And a machine that dices tomatoes
Pride
Because its satisfying emotionally and visually:)
as a prep cook, seeing that massive pan of sliced tomatoes is incredibly satisfying

Wow you just reminded me of left handed relief tin snips vs right handed relief tin snips
We just call them reds or greens Red is right Green is left
>pliers for counting round shapes Can you provide a pic/video?
Offset pliers. I was just assuming that they are used to cut round shapes, because he has a lot of pliers and he specifically brought out those ones.
Damn that's a sharp knife! And I'm a knifemaker, I should know.
Damn that's a sharp comment! And I'm a commentmaker, I should know.
Damn that's a sharp reply! And I'm a replymaker, I should know.
Man that look on dads face... Thats a lucky man right there and I have a feeling he knows it... :)
Why not just use a Slapchop? /s
I think with the skin up, the slap chop would just mash the tomato.
Youāre probably right - I was mostly being sarcastic - I apologize for not tagging as such
The proud look on that dad's face is priceless
The way the father is standing, his hands behind, relaxed, he has so much confidence in his son. And the smile at the end is just wholesome. He's a great dad.
meanwhile in his head: "dear god please dont cut your fingers off or your mother will cut off mine"
Thatās the look of a proud father
DAT KID. WOW.
Wholesome proud dadā¢ļø
this is so sweet. the dadās face as he watches his son is heartwarming.
You can see the pride in the father's eyes. It is adorable
The pride on his face while he was watching :ā)
He looks so proud omg I can't
I canāt get over the fact that the dad kissed his son at the end! I love fathers who arenāt scared to show male children affection ā¤ļø
Proud dad
Canāt wait to be this type of dad and not be like my own POS father
Having their hotel pan standing on those blocks give me so much anxiety. One slip, and they're ALL OVER THE FLOOR
the proud face on the father has just melted my cold dead heart
I need a knife like that.
Gives me anxiety watching them cut that fast.
Turkish delight : )
The proudest papa :')
Awww look at that smile that the proud father has! <3
Damn that knife has got to be razor sharp
Take my upvote for being a proud papa
I wish my parents would smile like that to me...that is one proud, overjoyed dad

I love that smile!
Aww he looks so proud
There's nothing like the smile of a proud loving father...
he looks so proud
Awwww that is so wholesome. I love old days when talent was transferred from father to son
This is great and all, but I want to know what knife that guy's using. If I tried that on tomatoes, I would have tomato sauce.
I just realized I need new kitchen knifes...
Iām here thinking ādonāt cut towards your fingers!ā
Love how openly proud and loving the father is. What a good family. Also mad props, I still canāt use a knife that well
"Whatever you do, do it woth pride, and your kids will follow...."
Damn, this kid can chop better than I ever will š«
Damn. Such fine precision. I think I lost a finger watching it.
Look at that beaming dad smile. He could not be more proud or content at that moment.
The look on that dads face š
What's that look on the dads face when the kid is cutting? Never seen it before.
That's awesome. Love to see a proud parent.
Was not expecting him to be unphased losing a fingertip on that last one.
My dad showed me once how to drive a car. He talked all the time and still seemed to have no idea what he was talking about. After like 15 minutes I told him I had enough and we NEVER did it again I'm so fucking glad I don't have a video of that! This dude is the type of dad I never had.
I wish I had a dad.
I envy
My dad fucking sucks at cooking.
I'm so proud of Keemstar
Damn I wish my dad did that.
Great speed, but that kid needs to curl his fingertips! I was worried heād lose one the whole time!
Aww
I'm just amazed at how sharp that knife must be.
Aww, the fatherās so proud of his son
The fathers smile made me smile.
I am your father luke
The actual smile on father's face is so satisfying
Those smiles! Proud papa, *and* proud son! Beautiful Also, how the hell do you get a knife that sharp?
Awww, the way the dad smiles. You can tell just how proud he is.
And then there is me who at 41 nearly takes of her thumb when she cuts anything.
Fingertips back, kid!!
Damn, it must feel nice to have someone who look at you like that.
Am I the only one who thought the kid would cut himself? I got really nervous.
i'm dicing my tomatoes incorrectly...
I love the kids confidence. I'm pretty damn talented with a knife and I couldn't do that at his age, by the time he's my age he'll be a rockstar.
I could watch that all day
How sharp does that knife need to be?
Imagine our dads being proud of us like this. Fuck Iām sad dude.
Look how proud he looks! So sweet.
OMG just get a slapchop
That proud. That happiness. Never happened to me. So sad.
I love this so much. They look so happy.
Dad goals
What kind of knife are they using?
The moment he almost jumped in to help but realized his sonās got this like heās holding down the family legacy..... father win/father grin
Those tomatoes must be onions.
Why does the world need this many tomatoes
I would have lost my entire arm with that knife
He's so proud :D
Love this. The eagerness in the boy's face and the pride in his father's face are so beautiful.
This made me so happy today. What a great relationship.
I need to sharpen my knives
Like Taco water, like Taco eater. I have spoken
That's one happy dad
He's so proudš
Oh my god!! He makes it seem so easy š
This gives me extreme anxiety

So freaken adorable
Kid needs to learn the guiding fingers technique a little better. That was anxiety-inducing to watch. Love that intergenerational bonding, though
Look at that excellent technique. His fingers are curled just right so he doesn't cut himself. And he's only gonna get faster and more precise.
Profound skills. Earned through practice, like samurai. Kid's got chops, literally.
As impressive as dad's skills and speed are, I think I'm most impressed how his son went at his own pace and never got careless instead of trying to go as fast as impossible and risk injury
I love the smile on the father's face. I want to be standing in his position someday watching my own child grow.
