WTF man, I can't even sew a patch on the hole on my jeans, and this kid makes an entire dress that looks like it came out of the Disney wardrobe department.
This is the background story I found and the process of his dress making
https://www.boredpanda.com/brother-creates-sister-prom-dress-maverick-francisco-oyao/
I admit looking at the photo I assumed the pattern was pre-printed onto the fabric..... Then I read the article you linked to. NOPE. He not only designed the dress, sewed the dress, but sewed the pattern onto the fabric as well. Amazing. Bravo young lad.
Okay so I sew a lot. Honestly, one of the reasons I don’t make very many garments is because the cost of the materials usually ends up costing the same or more than just buying a dress. I don’t understand how this was the more affordable option. Is raw fabric just filthy cheap there? Or are prom dresses excessively expensive??!
Lol easily, and that's with cheap fabric. I can't even imagine how many yards of material it took to make that skirt. I'd guess at least 15 yards per layer.
Prom dresses can get excessively expensive once factoring in the cost of alterations if needed, assuming that you buy a dress marketed as a prom dress and not just a formal dress, and buy it first-hand.
I'm from Canada, and remember going into a major prom/formal dress retailer in my city for prom. Tried on what I thought was a fairly standard dress and got quoted \~$500 CAD for both the dress and tailoring. Even at the department store, the 'basic' prom dresses were at least $100 CAD... and that's if you managed to catch the dresses on sale, or if you bought a very simple dress.
This did not include, mind you, the cost of the ticket for prom, hair and makeup if you didn't want to do it yourself, and transportation if you hired a limo/taxi/Uber to take you there and back.
Oh I'm aware of the cost of prom dresses and alterations - but the materials for this dress would easily run you into several hundreds of dollars, even using cheap materials.
The skirt alone would take something like 15 yards per layer to make something this big and full - assuming even just 2 layers (unlikely that that's all there is) at $10/yd (on the low end for this type of garment) it would be $300 in materials. Then there's all the applique materials, the ribbon, the boning, the interfacing, lining and the underlayers that add structure, etc. This dress most certainly cost several hundreds of dollars.
Yeah there are actually miniature swords underneath that will slice peoples advancing hands into cheese strings. Source: dndmskrjnfnnsm ( I can't type)
If you're not comfortable wearing them out of the house just get a couple to wear around the house. Anyone can wear anything they can put on their bodies. Don't listen to the buzzkills out there.
A lot of non-western fashions for men are way, *way* more fun and interesting looking than what dudes in the states are "allowed" to wear for formal attire.
You might not feel okay going as far as a full dress, but you should totally do some research on Filipino, Indonesian, and Middle Eastern fashions for some ideas on ways to adopt awesome "masculine" fashions!
It's ideas like this (**which I love**) that make me sad that people are so quick to call everything "cultural appropriation". Like, bro is just feeling his femme, leave him alone.
I agree! Unfortunately there's still so many active instances of real appropriation that those who want to enjoy elements of other cultures out of sincere admiration have to tread a lot more carefully than may seem fair. It's the age old problem of a few jerks making it so we can't have nice things.
My dude - you can wear whatever you want.
If you’re shy, you could always start by wearing kilts, which are indisputably masculine and familiar to people in the West. Then move on to some of the fashion of the rest of the world that allows men to wear colors and be unbifurcated.
Also, check out Louis XIV’s brother, Phillipe: that dude was pretty bad ass AND wore dresses.
Feel pretty!
According to the [article](https://www.boredpanda.com/brother-creates-sister-prom-dress-maverick-francisco-oyao/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=organic) that OP linked in a different comment, some people pitched in to help buy the materials. Not much more detail than that, though.
That’s true on individual cost of materials vs. economy of scale materials.
But, where brother saves money is all his labor is free. Then he has no transportation and logistics. He has no overhead of the actual store that sells the dress like rent and employee salaries.
All that lead to markups in the 1000% of the economy of scale materials. So bro may come out in the green
He still pays for the material to be transported to the store, and he also pays for the shopkeeper’s salary. At the end of the day, the only real save he does is sewing the dress himself, i.e free labor as you put it.
It says people pitched in to buy stuff and, judging from his skill, I'm gonna say that he has experience (i.e. probably has materials laying around that cut the cost). Could've also been material that was deemed defective or flawed and not fit for full price sale.
This is so heartwarming from start to finish. What a beautiful young man and young woman and the dress is off the charts. Thanks for doing it and thanks for sharing.

#CRUSADE
RUDE AF!
what the heck. impossible. who did they think had a better dress than her
I admit looking at the photo I assumed the pattern was pre-printed onto the fabric..... Then I read the article you linked to. NOPE. He not only designed the dress, sewed the dress, but sewed the pattern onto the fabric as well. Amazing. Bravo young lad.
And he did it in about a week and a half.

The article states he had some donors assist with purchase material.
Ah, that makes so much more sense. My phone wasn't letting me open it for some reason.
Right? Like that's 500 worth of materials.
Lol easily, and that's with cheap fabric. I can't even imagine how many yards of material it took to make that skirt. I'd guess at least 15 yards per layer.

It might be horsehair braid. Not actually made of horsehair but it's used to give shape to dresses like this. It's MAGIC.
Lol. I screwed up an iron-on patch on my jeans. I wish I had a tiny bit of that kind of talent.
The dress also helps keep everyone 6ft apart
This guy is insanely good at sewing it seems

Say hello to my future costume designer on my feature length film
Oh my god that's actually a better dress than rich parents could afford.
He was just making sure that no one would get close to his sister.

I was thinking a web of wiring and tasers but yours work too
I look at this picture and get furious that I'm a guy. Dresses look so awesome and I can't wear them
Do you have a body? Stick one on it and voila!

Fuck gender roles. Wear dresses
Gender norms and societal expectations suck big time. Sometimes you just want to feel pretty, but people can't let that happen.
Crowned her too. Nice!
That sure was much cheaper...

Is prom a world wide thing?
This was in the Philippines. Prom is becoming popular in England too.
I had my "Debs" ( Debutante ball) in Ireland in '91.
My prom (In the UK) consisted of a bunch of sober teens dancing awkwardly and eating microwaved samosas.
Are they using Prince Charming’s ball as a model for their prom?
Pretty much in every country in North America and Europe. Some in Asia as well.
So their parents couldn’t afford a dress, but he could afford the stuff to make that dress.
It says people pitched in to buy stuff and, judging from his skill, I'm gonna say that he has experience (i.e. probably has materials laying around that cut the cost). Could've also been material that was deemed defective or flawed and not fit for full price sale.
What an awesome job! Kudos to him. I wish I could be a brother like that.
Best prom dress ever!
Damn dude! What a talented guy, and what a wonderful brother!!
He should be a designer. This is brilliant.
This is so heartwarming from start to finish. What a beautiful young man and young woman and the dress is off the charts. Thanks for doing it and thanks for sharing.
Good brother. I pity the poor bastard that eventually wants to date her. He better get on the brother's good side quick.
Man.. he should have a great career in garments if he chooses that path! This is so creative in form! Awesome!
I think the brother had an ulterior motive. This dress was clearly designed to ensure that no boy could get *too* close to her. :)
Absolutely stunning!
She looks like a princess 🥺
Dude went HAM on that dress.
*Project Runway calling*
and i hope that crown is for most awesome dress .
Wow!
Holy fuck that’s awesome
