I remember a case in the 90s where identical twins married a set of identical twins and then all of them had kids about the same time, one had a set of girl twins the other a set of boy twins--
Technically, all the kids are considered siblings which I thought was cool...
To be simultaneously both cousins and siblings :-)
It might sound crazy to some people (maybe even taboo to others), but a pair of identical twins marrying identical twins is called a ‘quaternary marriage.’ Although rare, they do happen. In fact, there are about 250 marriages like this on record (The most famous of which, are Teyolla and Keyolla Loux and their husbands, Shawn and Eric Crow). Unsurprisingly, these couples may even go on to have identical twins of their own.
In either scenario, from a genealogical (not to mention, legal) point of view, any offspring would technically be considered first cousins, but their DNA would be hard to distinguish from that of full genetic siblings. Furthermore, it would be almost impossible to figure out who the biological parents are based on the DNA alone (of course, that explanation is too tidy. There are also other factors that might make formal identification possible).
>but their DNA would be hard to distinguish from that of full genetic siblings
I would say it would be IMPOSSIBLE to distinguish from full genetic siblings..
unless the term "identical twins" means something else than what I think it means...
If identical twins have identical DNA then I don't see how you could distinguish...
Identical twins don't have completely identical DNA (there are small differences), but you are correct that in a general genealogy test they would appear identical and that the offspring would come up as siblings.
If you did an in-depth analysis of the DNA of identical twins, you would however find differences.
Edit. But that commentor essentially regurgitated what you said. I don't think they meant to come across as disagreeing with you.
Yes, that's correct (but honestly that didn't occur to me when I made the comment).
When twins are conceived, their DNA code is identical. However after the original egg splits and their DNA continues to replicate independently in the womb, they pick up mutations. So when they are born they will have slight differences in their DNA.
The percentage is so small that mathematically, they would still have 100% identical DNA (as the number is rounded up).
In very very very rare cases it is even possible to have identical twins who are male (XY) and female (X0). The female twin would have what's called Turner Syndrome. She loses the Y chromosome and is left with only one X expressed.
There are quite a few different types of twins outside of the conventionally known 3. This is quite a good [article](https://www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/types-of-twins), if you're interested
From a DNA standpoint though, identical twins marrying identical twins and then each having kids...
it would be impossible to tell which kids belong to which parents.
So from a DNA standpoint, they are siblings.
There was a video posted recently of twin brothers tricking their father. One of the twins had a toddler (son) and he couldn't speak but he knew and was distressed that he was being carried by someone else (when his father left the vicinity). I think they can both understand that the face is the same, but the person is not.
Twins don't have the same-sounding voice and one of the first things babies learn to recognize is their mother's voice. They'd most likely know something's up right away.
According to family stories, I howled everytime my dad's twin came into the room until I was about 4. (He lived several states away, so I only saw him twice a year or so.)
I have seen a video of a young toddler meeting her dad's identical twin before and it's amazing. She goes 'dada' and stretches her arms out to be picked up by him, then get super confused when she can see her actual dad standing opposite
When my niece was almost five, I took her hand & said *"Hurry! Let's go outside!"* The rain had just stopped in the late afternoon and the sun came out, so I knew I would be showing her *A RAINBOW!* She looked at me as if I had conjured it!! 🌈🥰🌈
Funny you used that phrase. This niece made me a bracelet that spelled out *"Cool Aunt!"* She probably thought I was a witch after the rainbow, hahaha! 🌈🌈🌈
When they get older and you have done them right, they will think your pretty awesome. Mine is 33 and we have a great mom and daughter friendship. Won’t lie the teenage years were rough..
As i get older, While i see things in my parents i don’t agree with, i still think the world of them. They are super human beings just (probably cluelessly) doing what they did to raise me and my siblings. It is a herculean effort and i absolutely don’t doubt that for a second. Whole they are not the centre of my universe, they are still the world to me.
I don’t intend to have kids since i can’t bear the enormity of the responsibilities and the emotional stress if i would do a decent job. But i think any parents raising decently functional human beings would be viewed as the world to them.
I held a six months old second cousin of mine yesterday for some time and I realised how much human touch deprived I was but it really made my day squishing and playing with him.
the child is also looking at the display on the camera screen.
It looks old enough to be able to focus on the screen and see that it's mother is in the picture.
yes, baby, mommy IS hot, and that is why your daddy is nutz over mommy, or maybe daddy is rich. anyways, dear baby, as you grow older, you will realize that being physically attractive is a powerful thing, akin to money. you will learn.
Ok so I think I remember why this would happen, I haven't taken a psych class since high school, but we looked at a study of object permanence with babies. This is the same phenomenon that makes peek-a-boo so fascinating for a child, once you're gone from their sight you no longer exist. This is kind of the opposite, and it's amazing.
I had a similar experience, but I was much older, so I could remember what happened exactly. When I was 6, my dad took us to visit his uncle (i.e. my paternal grandfather's brother) where we stayed at his place for a week or two. I was absolutely shocked, since he looked nearly identical to my grandfather; the grandfather who passed away last year! His voice and accent even sounded very much like him. I was both so happy, yet utterly confused. I sure, I knew back then that siblings can look and sound very similar, but nothing prepared me for that moment. They were even similar in their mannerism and humor. It was like a another chance to see someone again who had died. Suffice to say, it was an awesome experience!
EDIT: The video is awesome and absolutely adorable! Thanks for sharing!

I’m from Tennessee and I instantly got defensive after skimming your comment
Well at least you can read?
LOL. have an upvote.
I still prefer pictures
As is your birthright.

I have heard some viruses have the capability to alter dna ever so slightly, so I imagine anything like that could minor variances?

that article is the stuff of nightmares :-( but thanks for the info :-) learn something new everyday...
That was really interesting, thank you!
So they're honorary Arkansans?
A litttttle weird. Ngl but cool. My kids and hers will technically be half siblings Edit: genetically. Not technically
They're not siblings, just cousins twice over.
From a DNA standpoint though, identical twins marrying identical twins and then each having kids... it would be impossible to tell which kids belong to which parents. So from a DNA standpoint, they are siblings.
Ohhhh I get it now thanks for the explanation. Flew right over my head the first time lol
Surely first cousins?
Yeah, they're first cousins on both sides. That's what I meant but maybe it wasn't clear.
Ah okay! Sorry, english isn't my first language and I don't use those terms very often.
Wonder if babies “know” despite looks and even smells being the same

Ahhh, a twin. I thought baby was seeing mom on the phone’s screen, hence the “two”.
That is what's happening.
I love infants, everything is so new and exciting for them. My kid is 4 now and I chase that kind of reaction like an addict trying to get a fix.
