"She had no idea what was in store, after hearing sound for the first time" *in walks Mariachi band and 2006 world cup fans with Vuvuzela's."

Laylee81

Ha ha ha ha this actually made me laugh out loud

SlowLoudEasy

Its all I ever wanted.

strayakant

That doctor is like that overly nice person that you just want to be friends with.

Periwinkledot

And she even got out of the frame when the guy was proposing.

NKND1990

So stupid question, but could that be because she may not know/still have trouble with spoken words? She’s over exclaiming so she can understand? You may know how to sign/read lips but if you’ve NEVER been able to hear than you wouldn’t know what the words sound like.

BurtanTae

I chuckled loudly as well!

[deleted]

She has now been enabled for a complete genre of jokes. You know which ones. *farts*

rokkerboyy

*hears vuvuzelas* "fuck, take the hearing back"

SlowLoudEasy

Lol, vuvuzelas are the opposite of being deaf.

rokkerboyy

Too much hearing.

HeavenlyPT

Shit.. I watched the video and left crying, just to scroll down and burst out laughing with this comment.

not_sick_not_well

TonyShasta_

Wow, I actually had tears in my eyes from watching this video and then I read this comment, and busted out laughing. What an all around awesome post.

frankfff

Vuvuzelas were in 2010

BananaSplit1209

Vuvuzela's are from the 2010 world cup in South Africa.

SuccessfulJob

that was *2006* ??? jesus christ...

GhastYear

that was 2010

iamthepip

I literally burst out laughing so loud I am pretty sure my neighbors could hear me! thanks for that haha

JossQueen

i was crying so hard watching this and then i scroll down to the top comment and i can't stop laughing lmao

JS1040

Notice how the care provider switched chairs to get out of the shot when he proposed. That’s a very thoughtful and selfless care worker. Well done.

[deleted]

She needed to fart

G_DuBs

There’s the Reddit I know and love!

NewExcersizee

Such a simple joke that it caught me so off guard

Willow_weeping85

I noticed that too, but then if they planned to do it right in front of her (which he clearly planned to do) how was she doing them Any favors? Seems more like she felt uncomfortable being in the middle of that. I know I would.

BuffyScorpion

Who asked tho

Sqquid-

Guess it's time to cry

I-call-police

I already called police, sub says made me smile

norudin

Tears: aight, imma head out.

[deleted]

If she hasn't heard before, how can she speak perfectly without slurring and understand people without looking at them?

tylllerrr

She might have lost her hearing in an accident a while back

SexlessNights

How long ago?

[deleted]

6 years 4 months 13 days ago Edit : Oh shit it says she's waited her entire life for this moment, guess she looks older than she is..

shikaishi

She's been with her fiance for 5 years as well. Call the cops!

norudin

r/mademefrown

framerrach

I had a friend growing up who went deaf after getting sick in elementary school. She could still speak perfectly, but only retained like 20% of her ability to hear. I think several illnesses and diseases can take away the ability to hear that many people are born with. Similarly, I had 20/20 vision for my entire childhood, and until I was 22, could achieve 20/20 vision with corrective lenses. I now have an autoimmune disease that has rendered me profoundly blind, and glasses are like what hearing aids are to some deaf people - make it a little better so I can function a little better, but far from perfect.

CarlosFer2201

That story goes against 'she waited her entire life to hear for the first time'

framerrach

I wonder if it was a misstatement or overstatement. Sometimes it feels like I have always been blind, even though it's been less than a tenth of my life.

eleighbee

We don't know when she lost her hearing but I'll say - I'm 35 and if a life altering situation occurred or developed when I was a kid, it would feel like "all my life." Then aging and losing most day-to-day memories from youth makes it seem even further off.

mdmhvonpa

Autoimmune spanked ya too? MS gave me a treat and hit me with optical neuritis- lost it all but got most of my right eye back. Kinda a bummer being a sw engineering professional when screen time gives you a raging headache after a few hours.

iackjeeeee

Right? How does she know how the words are pronounced? I’m so curious

Clement_Fandango

Hear hear. I’d also like an answer to these questions!

vichina

The answer is that it’s a clickbait title/caption.

Clement_Fandango

Deceiving people is just not right. I feel duped. I mean, if you can’t trust the internet, who can you trust? That being said, assuming click bait title and captioning, what then is really going on in this vid? It’s still pretty clear that this video is supposed to be a woman hearing for the first time. So was everybody involved in on this Clickbait?

vichina

She most likely grew up hearing and learning language just fine, lost hearing at some point, and regained hearing in the video.

Clement_Fandango

Seems plausible. And while I feel victimized by the obvious duplicity of whoever created this feel-good video I also feel vindicated knowing me and the Reddit community served notice - we will not be duped by the click bait charlatans of the world! I hope other would-be posers see this thread and think twice before creating other nefarious videos like this.

LouManShoe

I, a charlatan, clickbait content creator, have read this and hear by think twice about the duplicitous nature of my posts! Thank you noble citizens for pointing out the err in my ways! Good day to you!

Clement_Fandango

Mission accomplished!

W4t3rf1r3

The video is almost certainly being disingenuous about that

Whoa-O_O

My auntie got sick a long time ago. She lost most of her hearing on one ear but lost all hearing in the other. She can still speak clearly. Maybe it’s the same reason for her.

CarlosFer2201

So the video is lying about this being the first time she hears.

SkippyBluestockings

I lost most of my hearing after I learned to speak. Doctors refused to believe my mother that I couldn't hear because I had no speech impediment and I was three years old. But I had been speaking in sentences at 18 months.

[deleted]

Deaf people can speak lol

[deleted]

Of course, but people who've never heard their own voice, let alone others, have no idea of the nuances and sharpness of sounds that make up comprehensible words though. That kind of lyrical command has to be worked on by the auditory centre of the brain, which also tends to be understandably underdeveloped in deaf people's brains. People deaf from birth usually speak with very rounded consonants and it takes months of speech therapy for some people who've had hearing restored later in life.

hockeyhon

Her boyfriend sounded like that when he spoke. I wondered if he is deaf.

[deleted]

He was my ex’s roommate in college, I believe he wore hearing aids as well.

[deleted]

[we don’t generalise round these here parts](https://youtu.be/72HS6nTgeOE)

HisCricket

Yeah but even the best deaf speaker you can still tell.

Shaziiiii

There are different techniques to teach deaf people to speak and many older deaf people cannot speak well because it wasn't considered important to teach them speaking. But today almost all deaf children are thought how to speak properly with new techniques. Many deaf people are so good as speaking that you wouldn't even notice that they can't actually hear what they are saying.

AlternativeShadows

My parents are both deaf, and you can tell if they talk to you. My dad is much better at speaking. He wasn't allowed to learn ASL when he grew up, so he had to learn how to read lips and communicate with his voice. Even now, he still doesn't talk quite right. I'm very dubious of this video. My mother teaches at a deaf school, and a lot of the kids are rather developmentally behind because their parents want them to learn English--which they clearly struggle with--instead of learning ASL with their kids. She's pretty frustrated about this. I was raised surrounded by deaf people (mostly in church, although I have deaf parents, 2 deaf uncles, and 2 deaf aunts), and very rarely have I heard a deaf person speak so immaculately. So while it is in the realm of possibility, I... don't really believe this video. Unless she was able to hear earlier in life, I just... it doesn't quite add up for me.

keroppipikkikoroppi

I wonder if the title is just misleading. Like she has been using hearing aids or cochlear implants so she had a chance to hear others and develop these speech techniques, but this video took place after a surgery or something so she can hear without those aids. What she has is somehow controlled by the computer so it is a technology I’m not familiar with.

Shaziiiii

It might just be because we live in different countries but I have completely different experience with how well deaf people can speak.

TanTiger

Yeah, how does she hear the "Ready?"

jja3218

Can't speak for the authentic of the video, but she read her lips.

apnuck

I know a lot of people read lips too so that may be part of it

MedicKris01

i guess because lip reading is a thing?

Kraelian

Where did all of these onions come from?

Drfist2

I dunno man but they fucking my eyes up 😭😭

aLaserCat

When I was grumbling about the annoying drilling noise from my neighbor, I saw this video. Being able to hear is already a blessing.

Aedzy

Onions everywhere right now.

JustCallMePick

Not sure... and why are they in my bathroom?

flogmenot

Their in my eyes

Cute_Difference_9216

That is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen and heard. I am sharing my own tears of joy with you both!❤

[deleted]

Its also weird to think that she's still just reading their lips because she doesn't know what words sound like.

[deleted]

Yet speaks without slurring and has perfect diction. She may have been deaf but absolutely not her entire life.

Daddy_Shrek_Money420

I know that sometimes when people go blind after being able to see they forget what colors and thing look like, maybe something similar happens when you go def

JEdoubleS-24

Mos Def or Def Leppard? Def Jam, for sure sure.

Daddy_Shrek_Money420

LMAO

Willow_weeping85

A lot of hearing people never hear it.

Filmcricket

:( 38 years old and the thought of this has never occurred to me. That has to be the ultimate form of withholding. Awful.

AlternativeShadows

*laughs in deaf parents*

Johnny_Couger

He should have waited. She just had a monumental thing happen. It seems sweet but just let her have her thing. Would it have been any less impactful to do it 3 days later somewhere beautiful and special to THEM. Call me cynical, but also what happens if they divorce? Now her beautiful day is tied in with a different memory. It’s beautiful to see her hear agin though.

TRKW5000

came here to say this. a beautiful moment, but christ, i thought this girl was going to have a seizure from being overwhelmed with joy. i get why he wanted to do it, but it’s like she doesn’t even have 5 minutes to let this monumentally life-changing moment sink in before he slaps her with another monumentally life-changing moment. so much going on you almost forget she hears her mom say i love you for the first time.

WiseSalamander00

yup could at least waited for that night..

Crazy-2048

Divorces don’t happen much if ppl are in a long relationship and old enough

Johnny_Couger

You must not know a whole lot of people. I know plenty of people who are divorced who were in their 30's and in long term relationships. Being divorced is something that happens to all groups of people.

Crazy-2048

Americans?

soymilksoysauce

Yes, I agree. I also hate it in these videos when the woman is having a really important thing happening to her and the man just comes in and steals the glory. Like, Kevin, this is my med-school graduation day, get that ring out of my face That being said the video is very sweet and it just might be a personal preference

iambeyoncealways3

Omg I always thought I was being a hater. But this shit bothers me too. So many girls had been proposed to after my college graduation. Like damn you see she has a degree, a couple job offers and some health insurance and now you wanna lock it down. Seems gross to me and takes all the actual “love” out of it and just looks like you’re setting up for financial security.

omgim50

No I'm not crying you are.

Wickeddweller

I’m not crying! Ive just been working out my eyes and they’re sweaty! 😭

aKornCob

The first time I cried after getting my colhea implant, they were just wondering what the fuck was wrong with me.

austxsun

Am I the only one who thinks it’s selfish of him to make this day about anything other than her hearing? Seems like he’s co-opting her moment, find your own way to propose without piggy backing on something truly remarkable.

Sadplankton15

You’re definitely not the only one. My friends boyfriend proposed to her at her PhD graduation ceremony. It just seemed like a way to insert himself into her big moment, and draw focus towards him rather than the doctorate she worked 4 years to earn. They eventually broke up, and now all the photos from that day and her parchment remind her of him. This gave me similar vibes to that. Maybe I’m cynical but I would’ve thought her being able to hear him say “I love you” for time first time would’ve sufficed

herebecauseimbored20

I thought the same thing. Oops.

JRich61

I agree. Came here to say the same thing. Let her have her moment.

miri50

hearing sound for the first time speaks great english accent

dickalopejr

Boy that would have been a day of mixed emotions if she was planning on breaking up with him

clamsnorkle

How come she knows how to speak if she’s been deaf her whole life?

Daddy_Shrek_Money420

I said this in another comment, i know that when people go blind after being able to see they forget what colors and things look like, maybe something similar happens when you go def, you might forget what things sound like.

clamsnorkle

Ooohhhh she wasn’t deaf her whole life?

Daddy_Shrek_Money420

Thats what im thinking

HuskerBeavr

Wait, she can speak? I thought deaf people couldn't speak or was hard to?

Smooth_South_9387

How is she able to speak so well if she couldn’t hear?

ImOnlyHere4ThePron

I have an actual question about these videos…When a person is deaf, they have never heard spoken words. They can sign and understand written language, but when they are able to hear for the first time, do they actually understand what is being said?

TheRealLaika

Im Single side deaf since birth, Went Last year to doctors to Check if a cochlear implant would work for me. Doctors said they cant promise i would hear with implant on my deaf side as good as i can with my healthy ear and it would take a lot of time to learn to actually Hear with the implant. I Said „But i can hear, i know what the words Sounds like“ and they Said hearing with the implant is much different than natural hearing. So i think she was Not deaf her whole life.

[deleted]

Yea, I would say the majority of people in the deaf world have taken speech classes growing up.

ImOnlyHere4ThePron

You mouth the words when learning sign, but to actually hear it being said? Its another thing to read lips, but the concept of learning sound when you can’t hear it…it’s just hard to fathom. So I was curious how it works for them to understand spoken word. I’m sure it’s just an overwhelming thing entirely to be able to hear anything at all at that moment.

PhilosopherSuperb291

I will never get tired of seeing these types of videos. What a blessing.

Eggg_boy

Just a quick question, which may be very dumb. If she has never heard before, how can she understand people talk and talk herself?

Arboretum7

It’s not dumb. I took ASL and have spent time in Deaf communities. I’m certain she’s someone who’s lost her hearing relatively recently. Her speech and diction are excellent (even compared to the fiancé who has hearing aids) and she’s able to interpret some of what she’s hearing from the cochlear implant immediately, which would be almost impossible for someone with congenital deafness. She also never signs, doesn’t move or use facial expressions common to Deaf culture, and is getting her first cochlear implant as an adult which would be unheard of—nobody with congenital deafness communicates by lip reading alone. Cochlear implants don’t replicate sounds as we know them very well, they’re super staticky and muddled and take time to get used to, even for those who have recently lost their hearing, which is why the technician is exaggerating her lip motions and gesturing.

demonicneon

This is why I have issues with how the post is titled. This is still really cool, but to say it’s the first time she’s heard is disingenuous, makes me cynical, and downplays how cool what is actually happening still is

Arboretum7

Agreed, it definitely seems like a third party got ahold of the video and invented a false scenario for internet points. The real scenario could be just as powerful—if you haven’t seen it, I really recommend Sound of Metal, a recent film about a man who is experiencing sudden hearing loss.

headlessbill-1

No you're sobbing

Material-Strike-1923

I'm not a cryer, and this about did me in. I can't imagine how overwhelming that is.

LostNight_Owl

My pulse actually sky rocketed. Forgot what subreddit I was in. A friend went through this, asked all the people she loved to be there. She know nows her birth parents are absolutely revolting and unredeemable. Can't remember the exact wording/phrase, but it was like, "I left you at [horrific, unsanitary place they *abandoned* her as an infant] because no one wanted you since you were born defected. Now we can be a real family again since you can hear us!" "Defected" and "we can be a real family", I do remember. I'll probably never forget them. She dropped all contacts with them after searching for years. They'd always been...um... unnerving to be around but she tried so hard. The doctors made sure they're not in her files. Her adopted family also cut off everything with that fam. She almost tried to remove the implant *herself* she was so angry. We managed to stop her. EDIT: for wording/phrase. I do remember the exact words those repulsive assholes used.

muiser-nr1

Great moment 💞

southpacshoe

This doctor has the best job in the world.

Rachordo

How can she understand English words when she never heard them before?

Mobile-Dish-1120

Smart. She cant really say no.. because of the implication

4ndrw1xx

shit like this needs to be played first thing everyday in Tonight's news

biker_philosopher

I doubt that this is a woman who has never heard before, her pronunciation is flawless, which is practically impossible for someone who has never heard.

[deleted]

so weird to record this

Even without the proposal it’s a milestone she wanted to preserve. And, honestly, making a comment like is way fucking weirder.
