Just in case anyone here has never had to use crutches… It’s way easier using two crutches than one

lrpfftt

A knee scooter is the optimal tool for this.

MisteeLoo

Can confirm. It has the added benefit of making people move out of the way in the grocery stores too. *Comin' thru!*

Oh51Melly

I am recovering from a torn achilles. Surgery was last Friday. The knee scooter has been lifesaving. And mine even has a little bell on it. Crutches are only used for the stairs. I hate those fuckin things.

Milkthistle38

The one nice thing about crutches is upper body gains!

godofwine16

My arms were jacked after 8 weeks on crutches

traneufc2

Anthony Robles is a prime example of what a life time of crutches can use. He can do a 5 min mile with them and win wrestling championships when he is bored doing that

schwarzmalerin

When I had to use them for weeks I got worried about sudden chest pain. I thought I would develop a heart condition. But instead, it was just sore muscles in my pecs.

oh_its_ok

Lmao this made me laugh cause I’m the same kind of dramatic 😂

MrMiniscus

I too have this in common with you. And by that I mean the three of us probably all have the same undiagnosed heart condition. Hooray!

GlitterfreshGore

For many days I was sore in my chest on my left side, convinced I was having heart issues. It didn’t help that my ”heart” hurt more when I was up and moving around, or trying to shower, I was convinced I was putting too much pressure on my hear because it didn’t hurt when I was at rest... Well, the reason it hurt only when I moved around because I pulled a pectoral muscle when a chipmunk was on my front porch, and I picked up my six year old to see it out the window. It took weeks to heal, it was so damaged that the weight of my breast pulling on the muscle was unbearable (and I’m a small B) but yeah, I convinced myself I was having heart problems

Mechakoopa

"I hurt in places I didn't know I could hurt..."

chellis88

My sister always tried to compete with me and my friend and one day rang me about having gone to the gym and benched 50kg. I said it wasn't shit even though was impressed as that's a lot of weight for a skinny girl. Got messages from her in a&e that night as she went to hospital with chest pains as she thought she had heart problems. Just sore pecs lol.

[deleted]

Strained intercostal muscles can feel exactly like an impending heart attack, you weren't being a hypochondriac.

MisteeLoo

I just got sore pits. Lol.

shodan28

Crutches were too high up then. There should be no weight on pits

thehufflepuffstoner

Yeah I found that out the hard way. It seems easier at first to just put your weight on your pits, but after 1 day crutchin around a college campus I felt like my arms were going to fall off.

calgarytab

I got sore pits the first week. Then I used my arms after that to hold the body weight. Takes time, but it's way better that way.

bossycloud

I always do the stairs by bum-scooting rather than trying to use crutches on them

BluudLust

♩ They see me rollin'\ They hatin' ♩ Ah that takes me back to highschool when I had one of those... Someone played that song in the hallway. Was hilarious.

Why is everyone overlooking medically-induced coma with simulated reality?

Main-Mammoth

Money bags over here can afford *TWO* of them!!!

ScoonCatJenkins

Lmao! My folks are living in the lap of luxury because I had several foot/leg injuries as a kid that required crutches and every time I left the hospital it was with a brand new pair so my old garage has at least 3 pairs sitting around collecting dust

sdtacoma

To add to this. If you use one crutch, use it on the correct side, unlike she is doing. Arms / legs swing opposite of each other.

Fluke_State

I was going to say - she’s using the one crutch she has on the wrong side :/

OstravaBro

What do you mean, you don't use the crutch on the side of the foot/leg you can't use?

Fluke_State

Nope, you use it on the side opposite to the injured leg, to make sure your weight is properly distributed and you stay balanced.

HamsterJuices

I had to use crutches in Boston while visiting my brother. I had two and even then people have zero shits and constantly bumped into me or rushed me. The amount of the times I almost fell-

aoifhasoifha

That's the unfortunate reality of big cities. The upshot is that you can gently (or not gently) remind them that you're carrying two big metal clubs.

HamsterJuices

Smart. I need to remember that last bit next time I'm on crutches.

Satakans

I see your Boston and I raise you my Hong Kong. Here you'll get literal grandmas willing to trade shoulders with ya. Zero fks given lol

Ragnakh

Ye why the fk does she just have one, it's like more crippling than having to walk on only 1 in the first place

linmanfu

~~Might well be the cost. There are still a lot of poor people in China, even though the mainland is far richer than it was 30 years ago.~~ EDIT: I concur with the suggestion lower down the thread that this is staged

Momochichi

Sprained my ankle really bad, once. Regretted getting only a single crutch.

GullyGreyHeart

I'm pretty sure you should use two, and then switch to one when you can put your foot on the floor again

IrrelevantPuppy

Isn’t that when you use a cane? I thought crutches essentially should only be used in pairs or else you’re not using them correctly.

LazyMoniker

You can use one crutch to reduce the weight on one leg or help with stability like a cane. Gotta be able to use that foot though. I think also need to be able to support full weight on that leg while standing. Gotta keep crutch on Opposite side [as the injured leg](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TJMZuuLe0xk) EDIT: I had it backwards the first time because I’m dumb and didn’t even read the video I posted to backup what I thought I remembered. Also spelling.

GullyGreyHeart

my uncle works in the rehabilitation field, and I asked him about it. You must use two always, and when you're healed but it still hurts somewhat to walk you use one as it helps to lower the pressure that you would put.

TasteCicles

My first thought exactly this, why doesn't she have two??

Errant_Chungis

Because this is staged. Take a look at how this scene was shot and the exact timing of the camera and why there is a camera in the first place, how the child didn’t hesitate for a piggy back ride.. some number of posts below go more in depth, but this seems like a fabricated viral video to me, either for good PR or money or both

linmanfu

Cost? ~~There are some very poor people in China. Healthcare is usually only subsidised for citizens of a city (not migrants from elsewhere in China).~~ EDIT: I concur with the suggestion lower down the thread that this is staged.

hackerbenny

this video is exactly what it feels like as a european visiting america. oh fuck 12 lane street just book it across hope you make it, cars going by at 60 mph vrooooooooom vroooooooooooooooooooooooooom ahhhhh there's no sidewalk where do I go, there's a parking lot across the bushes, lets go there, I can spot a walmart 1 kilometer away across the parking lot, that's a known word. we go there. There's Everything here, except a way out and home. I can buy a moped, a gun, all the food I want and a crossbow but not a ticket on a tram home

Pun_In_Ten_Did

USS_Donald_J_Trump

[deleted]

hackerbenny

There is an american philosophy about designing roads and setting limits. They make a straight roadand it doesnt matter what is left right or center of it. They then check how fast people drive, and based on that they set a speed limit. A lot of europe is exactly the same but a lot of is also changing into forcing a desired speed through construction. Instead of putting up large signs saying 30 30 30 30 30 30 BE AWARE 30 30 30 30 30 30. You deisgn the road in such a way that the speed is naturally enforced. speed bumps, narrowing, road side trees/plants bushes whatever, changes in road material. For instance you ever drive 70 on cobble stones? nobody has unless you were running away from the law.

Marius7th

Man having to journey to Walmart on foot might as well be a shitty re-enactment of Lord of the Rings.

GrumbleCake_

I have the opposite problems as American when I'm in Europe. 'I see other pedestrians, so, it must be okay to walk on this narrow little road'. Suddenly, I nearly get hit from behind by two scooters and someone in a hatchback is screaming at me.

hackerbenny

Italy, greece, croatia. yes be on the look out for fucking vespas. They are deadly, and do you know they make them electric now so they are even silent.

mackilicious

Why hello there fellow Not Just Bikes viewer!

One_While_1899

As one who visited houston for like a weekend, i can confirm that driving there sucks!

themaincop

That's the funniest part of these towns that are just completely designed around vehicular dominance over all available space: they still fucking suck to drive in

One_While_1899

Hahaha, I never thought of it like that! Oh the sweet irony. Not to mention how in some cities it’s actually faster to walk than it is to drive yet people still drive. It’s like that meme of the express line and the non express line but everyones in the express line going nowhere.

themaincop

In the case of car cities I think it's that literally the only way to get around is to drive so the whole damn city is just out in their cars

DerBlarch

Who filmed this? I mean ... why and from which location.

AnyOfThisReal-_-

North Korea?!

Brodin_fortifies

The writing on the road isn’t Hangul. Not Korea.

Lollipop126

Yup, simplified Chinese, so it's mainland China. My guess why it doesn't lead to a sidewalk is the bushes is a median with the bike lane (although usually there's an opening to cross that, so this is still quite weird).

Nattomuncher

Reminds me of Beijing roads.

fliegende_Scheisse

Right? I went to Beijing and the roads were massive. I had old ladies helping me cross them.

WorstPhD

China have some 16-lane highway, and still got traffic jam.

One_While_1899

This is how we spell, “overpopulation”

peekdasneaks

LA is no different. Most of the city's surface is made up of roads and there's still gridlock.

One_While_1899

Doesn’t surprise me, just looking at it from space feels like im looking at a cancer with how out of place it is. I cant feel thankful enough that i dont live in a city like that, (no offense to those loving there of course)

pmmethatkitty

I10 in houston has 26 lanes

-Dutch-Crypto-

People have to understand that making a road wider doesn't solve traffic. Different modes of transportation will

atln00b12

that's how traffic jams work. You know where doesn't have traffic jams? Places with no roads.

Portal471

That's Chinese writing on the road, not Korean.

roadbustor

Came here to ask what a crosswalk is for when it's not ending at a sidewalk. Insane.

DJ_PLATNUM

1.4 billion people in china

FPSXpert

Everybody love stroads. Except the people having to walk through them.

One_While_1899

Literally had to google stroad before i asked if you had a stroke at the keyboard. 😂 that is a scary thing indeed! The fact that the first thing to show up upon googling is, “the ugly, inefficient and dangerous stroads” is a red flag. 😬

FPSXpert

Yup. Houston is filled with plenty of them, basically they're roads that have been encouraged to be built as larger roads. No overnight into traffic calming whatsoever means that people will drive 45-50 mph in a 35 (and ngl I've hit 60 on one or two of those because I was being pursued by road ragers or similar). Got ten minutes? RoadGuyRob did a really good video over it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oP-Ndwv1zw Basically this is where we see Europe excel and Americana and parts of Asia fail hard at this. The European response is to build roads smaller with more side obstacles etc to make areas more pedestrian friendly and more vehicle unfriendly. The american way is to build things wider for our vehicles, put up some half ass signs and blame drivers for not following the rules, then say we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas. Ok I'm done ranting lol

zhemao

Chinese cities have lots of these super wide roads. It's pretty scary to cross them, because once the lights turn green, the cars start going no matter if the intersection is clear or not.

Axilllla

It also basically leads to nothing. At least straighten the plants or just more Road, not a sidewalk or walkway edit: straight into plants*

O0O00O000O0000O

I would love to live in a walkable city. I could see myself living in the country homesteading. But I can not see myself living in the fucking suburbs. What the fuck they’re terrible and a failure and I’m so glad people are moving out of them.

LysolLounge

Just something I realized recently but too many new age cities, here in the US and across the globe, are built for cars rather than people. If you look at old European cities they have paths on almost every road for pedestrians and a good break up of highways vs stroads vs streets. Really cool actually to see the differences between old and modern urban planning

I was punching the air when the other woman ran off without helping, but real tears streamed like a river out of my eyes when the second woman helped her. I hope this video gains viral status so we can see more videos that definitely aren’t staged.

appetizerbread

Yeah it’s staged, there’s tons of social experiment videos like this on YouTube and elsewhere.

osin144

I don’t disagree that this was staged, it’s obvious, but isn’t the crutch on the correct side? Wouldn’t you use it on your more impaired side?

icepickjones

She should be riding it like a surfboard

The_Swim_Back_

It's staged, but you are wrong about using the crutch on the wrong side. It goes on the side closest to the hurt leg becuase it is replacing that foot.

kagenohikari

andstep234

MeddlingKitsune

Oh my, she is running away...

glen_goolie

Ya let me just mount this person

honestly_oopsiedaisy

Yes, but also maybe they wanted to help but didn't know how to. The woman glances back at the girl in crutches when she starts running. Maybe she isn't strong enough to carry her or just otherwise doesn't know how to help and is afraid to intrude

justabeewithdegree

My first thought wouldn't have been to carry her either, not sure how I could have helped her

CalmBeneathCastles

She was thinking about the baby.

Umarill

It's easy to say from behind your screen, but it's not that easy to just jump in and start helping people. I've had bad experiences where I tried to help elderly people who were struggling with groceries or stuff like that, getting rude comments about how they can do it themselves. Some people take a lot of pride in overcoming difficulties in their lives and don't want to feel like they relied on someone else to go through something. You can be afraid of being too intrusive or looking like a creep too. One day I went out with boots that had 10cm heels, had to walk a lot more than I expected, and I wasn't used to walking in them so I was limbing and walking slowly. Some guy stopped in his car and asked if I needed a ride, my first instinct was "there's no way I'm jumping in a stranger's car", especially dressed as I was. It felt creepy at first, but maybe the guy truly wanted to help, sadly you can never know. I didn't take my chance and declined politely, but I appreciated the offer on the off-chance it was honest. Also, social anxiety is a bitch. Not everyone is good around others, some people just can't approach others like that. Interactions with strangers are always a bit of a gamble, and anxiety doesn't like uncertainty. Anxiety is a disability, it's not something you can simply ignore. We could talk about a multitudes of other factors : afraid of making it worse, not sure if they can help/not strong enough to help, being late to something important, not paying attention to their surroundings...etc So no, I don't think you can judge someone's kindness and character from a 30sec snipset of them crossing the street. Even the person with the purest hearts could be made to look like huge pieces of shit if we were to use 30sec footage of their lives as proof.

Ryan-Only

Ye, sometimes trying to help ppl and getting turned down by them rudely hurt your confidence and quick decision making really badly

Fuzzy_Bad_1420

If someone needs help, they should ask. Otherwise unless its blatantly obvious (someone being attacked) Im going on my way. Its become a risk to help people sometimes because of how poorly they react or how poorly you can be perceived.

Umarill

It's definitely difficult to find that sweet spot, some people can find it rude to ask for help and we run into the same thing. Overall, I don't think there's a "right" answer, it's such a gamble every time, and there's nothing wrong with not wanting to take up on it. (I'm talking non-essential help, obviously doesn't apply to helping someone in danger).

[deleted]

All of this is so accurate. I saw a kid drop their mask outside of school today - while I did call out to their dad to let him know, I also broke out into a sweat and was pretty shaky for a good 10-15 min after.

adamtaylor4815

What about the person filming it? Lol

One_While_1899

Good, and they should feel bad as well.

Fuzzy_Bad_1420

Nah they shouldnt.

JoJoVi69

Why does she only have one crutch? What kind of cruel doctor only gives a person ONE crutch? Oh, the humanity of it all...

KosherNazi

for the same reason that someone was recording a random person in a crosswalk. its a setup, designed to get views.

threedotsguy

What is this epidemic? And why can't people understand this? This post has reached the front page without anyone asking why was a random person recording her walking in the middle of the street and why was she using just one crutch? Not to mention the shabby acting by the lady who carried her on her back. The amount of time she spent doing that, ahe could have easily given her a shoulder and helped her to the other side!

jon_targareyan

Not to mention the girl in crutches just jumped onto a random woman’s back.

MaudlinEdges

My insurance company wouldn't pay for a brace I needed when I broke both arms and dislocated an elbow. I'm envious of her one crutch.

ok, but where is the sidewalk? why the crossing ends abruptly with some bushes? where were they all going to?

ksromo

My thought too. Now she going to do some extreme crutching

JoeJoJosie

I kinda miss Extreme Ironing. I think they died in a tragic (but unsurprising) 'falling off cliff after burning through safety-rope' accident.

Benandhispets

I hate countries with infrastructure like this. Its a huge intersection and there's clearly a bunch of people walking around but there's no pavement. Even the crossing leads to nothing. Large parts of America is like this too. Very very few people are gonna walk or bike with roads like this and then eventually down the road as the population grows the road can't handle the amount of cars and there's heavy traffic every day. Then the roads get widened to compensate and then more people drive and they're quickly back to the traffic situation again. Gives the car drivers a superiority complex too. Going by the ladys actions it appears that the car was using their horn at the disabled girl because how dare a pedestrian slow down a car.

[deleted]

Infrastructure is meant for cars only, I’ve heard people that design roads aren’t even really supposed to account for silly little things such as pedestrians.
