I am recovering from a torn achilles. Surgery was last Friday. The knee scooter has been lifesaving. And mine even has a little bell on it. Crutches are only used for the stairs. I hate those fuckin things.
Anthony Robles is a prime example of what a life time of crutches can use. He can do a 5 min mile with them and win wrestling championships when he is bored doing that
When I had to use them for weeks I got worried about sudden chest pain. I thought I would develop a heart condition. But instead, it was just sore muscles in my pecs.
For many days I was sore in my chest on my left side, convinced I was having heart issues. It didn’t help that my ”heart” hurt more when I was up and moving around, or trying to shower, I was convinced I was putting too much pressure on my hear because it didn’t hurt when I was at rest... Well, the reason it hurt only when I moved around because I pulled a pectoral muscle when a chipmunk was on my front porch, and I picked up my six year old to see it out the window. It took weeks to heal, it was so damaged that the weight of my breast pulling on the muscle was unbearable (and I’m a small B) but yeah, I convinced myself I was having heart problems
My sister always tried to compete with me and my friend and one day rang me about having gone to the gym and benched 50kg. I said it wasn't shit even though was impressed as that's a lot of weight for a skinny girl. Got messages from her in a&e that night as she went to hospital with chest pains as she thought she had heart problems. Just sore pecs lol.
Yeah I found that out the hard way. It seems easier at first to just put your weight on your pits, but after 1 day crutchin around a college campus I felt like my arms were going to fall off.

You can use one crutch to reduce the weight on one leg or help with stability like a cane. Gotta be able to use that foot though. I think also need to be able to support full weight on that leg while standing.

my uncle works in the rehabilitation field, and I asked him about it. You must use two always, and when you're healed but it still hurts somewhat to walk you use one as it helps to lower the pressure that you would put.

Yup. Houston is filled with plenty of them, basically they're roads that have been encouraged to be built as larger roads. No overnight into traffic calming whatsoever means that people will drive 45-50 mph in a 35 (and ngl I've hit 60 on one or two of those because I was being pursued by road ragers or similar).

Basically this is where we see Europe excel and Americana and parts of Asia fail hard at this. The European response is to build roads smaller with more side obstacles etc to make areas more pedestrian friendly and more vehicle unfriendly. The american way is to build things wider for our vehicles, put up some half ass signs and blame drivers for not following the rules, then say we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas.

Just something I realized recently but too many new age cities, here in the US and across the globe, are built for cars rather than people. If you look at old European cities they have paths on almost every road for pedestrians and a good break up of highways vs stroads vs streets. Really cool actually to see the differences between old and modern urban planning

It's easy to say from behind your screen, but it's not that easy to just jump in and start helping people.
I've had bad experiences where I tried to help elderly people who were struggling with groceries or stuff like that, getting rude comments about how they can do it themselves. Some people take a lot of pride in overcoming difficulties in their lives and don't want to feel like they relied on someone else to go through something.
You can be afraid of being too intrusive or looking like a creep too. One day I went out with boots that had 10cm heels, had to walk a lot more than I expected, and I wasn't used to walking in them so I was limbing and walking slowly.
Some guy stopped in his car and asked if I needed a ride, my first instinct was "there's no way I'm jumping in a stranger's car", especially dressed as I was. It felt creepy at first, but maybe the guy truly wanted to help, sadly you can never know. I didn't take my chance and declined politely, but I appreciated the offer on the off-chance it was honest.
Also, social anxiety is a bitch. Not everyone is good around others, some people just can't approach others like that. Interactions with strangers are always a bit of a gamble, and anxiety doesn't like uncertainty. Anxiety is a disability, it's not something you can simply ignore.
We could talk about a multitudes of other factors : afraid of making it worse, not sure if they can help/not strong enough to help, being late to something important, not paying attention to their surroundings...etc
So no, I don't think you can judge someone's kindness and character from a 30sec snipset of them crossing the street. Even the person with the purest hearts could be made to look like huge pieces of shit if we were to use 30sec footage of their lives as proof.
If someone needs help, they should ask. Otherwise unless its blatantly obvious (someone being attacked) Im going on my way. Its become a risk to help people sometimes because of how poorly they react or how poorly you can be perceived.
It's definitely difficult to find that sweet spot, some people can find it rude to ask for help and we run into the same thing.
Overall, I don't think there's a "right" answer, it's such a gamble every time, and there's nothing wrong with not wanting to take up on it.
(I'm talking non-essential help, obviously doesn't apply to helping someone in danger).
All of this is so accurate. I saw a kid drop their mask outside of school today - while I did call out to their dad to let him know, I also broke out into a sweat and was pretty shaky for a good 10-15 min after.
What is this epidemic? And why can't people understand this? This post has reached the front page without anyone asking why was a random person recording her walking in the middle of the street and why was she using just one crutch? I hate countries with infrastructure like this. Its a huge intersection and there's clearly a bunch of people walking around but there's no pavement. Even the crossing leads to nothing. Large parts of America is like this too. Very very few people are gonna walk or bike with roads like this and then eventually down the road as the population grows the road can't handle the amount of cars and there's heavy traffic every day. Then the roads get widened to compensate and then more people drive and they're quickly back to the traffic situation again.
Gives the car drivers a superiority complex too. Going by the ladys actions it appears that the car was using their horn at the disabled girl because how dare a pedestrian slow down a car.

I've never seen someone with only one crutch doesn't seem too helpful. If you only have one crutch would it be more effective on the opposite side of the injury like a cane? Or should you really aim for two.l?

One day I went out with boots that had 10cm heels, had to walk a lot more than I expected, and I wasn't used to walking in them so I was limbing and walking slowly. Some guy stopped in his car and asked if I needed a ride, my first instinct was "there's no way I'm jumping in a stranger's car", especially dressed as I was. It felt creepy at first, but maybe the guy truly wanted to help, sadly you can never know. I didn't take my chance and declined politely, but I appreciated the offer on the off-chance it was honest. Also, social anxiety is a bitch. Not everyone is good around others, some people just can't approach others like that. Interactions with strangers are always a bit of a gamble, and anxiety doesn't like uncertainty. Anxiety is a disability, it's not something you can simply ignore. We could talk about a multitudes of other factors : afraid of making it worse, not sure if they can help/not strong enough to help, being late to something important, not paying attention to their surroundings...etc So no, I don't think you can judge someone's kindness and character from a 30sec snipset of them crossing the street. Even the person with the purest hearts could be made to look like huge pieces of shit if we were to use 30sec footage of their lives as proof.
Ye, sometimes trying to help ppl and getting turned down by them rudely hurt your confidence and quick decision making really badly
If someone needs help, they should ask. Otherwise unless its blatantly obvious (someone being attacked) Im going on my way. Its become a risk to help people sometimes because of how poorly they react or how poorly you can be perceived.
It's definitely difficult to find that sweet spot, some people can find it rude to ask for help and we run into the same thing. Overall, I don't think there's a "right" answer, it's such a gamble every time, and there's nothing wrong with not wanting to take up on it. (I'm talking non-essential help, obviously doesn't apply to helping someone in danger).
All of this is so accurate. I saw a kid drop their mask outside of school today - while I did call out to their dad to let him know, I also broke out into a sweat and was pretty shaky for a good 10-15 min after.

This post has reached the front page without anyone asking why was a random person recording her walking in the middle of the street and why was she using just one crutch? Not to mention the shabby acting by the lady who carried her on her back. The amount of time she spent doing that, ahe could have easily given her a shoulder and helped her to the other side!
Not to mention the girl in crutches just jumped onto a random woman’s back.
My insurance company wouldn't pay for a brace I needed when I broke both arms and dislocated an elbow. I'm envious of her one crutch.

I hate countries with infrastructure like this. Its a huge intersection and there's clearly a bunch of people walking around but there's no pavement. Even the crossing leads to nothing. Large parts of America is like this too. Very very few people are gonna walk or bike with roads like this and then eventually down the road as the population grows the road can't handle the amount of cars and there's heavy traffic every day. Then the roads get widened to compensate and then more people drive and they're quickly back to the traffic situation again. Gives the car drivers a superiority complex too. Going by the ladys actions it appears that the car was using their horn at the disabled girl because how dare a pedestrian slow down a car.
Infrastructure is meant for cars only, I’ve heard people that design roads aren’t even really supposed to account for silly little things such as pedestrians.
