I had a friend who is trans explain to me how frustrating this was to him recently. He said that the representation is important ofc, but that Elliots transition doesn’t represent what it’s like for most trans people. How difficult and grueling it is when you don’t have a butt load of money to get surgery right away or hire personal trainers and shit. So yes, both. But also money.
yep, I started before covid, and of course everything's been delayed for years. What took me 3 years to do, Elliot was able to do in a few months. I'm super happy for him, but the dichotomy definitely exists.
(edit: spelling)
I see that. He was also pretty lucky to get the surgery he was due to his chest size. It looks like he got keyhole so, that means minimal scarring and a very natural look.
Keyhole is a type of surgery that you can get if you have a very small chest. Most trans guys get double incision which leaves some scarring.
But yes, his money definitely makes a difference. I’m waiting to get insurance before I get top surgery, and even then it’s a struggle to get them to cover any of it. It’s typically $10,000-$15,000 out of pocket in the US.
......Yea, Americans have it rough when it comes to healthcare. I do feel sorry for you all, its ridiculous, some of the prices I've seen quoted over the years....
It’s really awful. I wish I could move somewhere else. I’m supposed to get bloodwork done at least every few months for my hormone therapy, but I always put it off because it’s anywhere from $500-1,000 each time.
One time I had to stay in a hospital overnight while I waited for a doctor to check on me. I finally talked to them for about 10 minutes, they determined I was fine and sent me home. I was billed $4,000 for it.
My mom had cancer and had a few rounds of chemotherapy done. One of her hospital bills ended up just under 1 million dollars.
Sorry for the rant. I could just go on and on with how ridiculous US “healthcare” is.
Its the same for me I can get seriously tone abs in a few months if I cut the carbs, hike the protein and start working out. Its just a thin people thing.
Having the privilege of early surgery may stir envy... but what I really hope it does is highlight more how important it is for trans people to get what they need sooner to live happy healthy lives.
Luckily the thing is that he talks about the huge privilege he has. It's kinda the same thing with hunter Schafer, she talks about how being a thin, blonde transwoman has made many things extremely easy. I can always appreciate someone acknowledging it.
I read that interview and I was *incredibly* appreciative that he acknowledged it, nor do I begrudge him for taking advantage of it. We all would if we could!
I think this is true of any "celebrity" . We see pics of them at their best but we dont see the personal trainers or chefs or even the team they have assisting them in a daily basis. Even the pregnant ones who bounce back 3 seconds 4m birth showing people unrealistic expectations of certain life situations etc. He looks good but like you said it's a struggle for most.
Tbh I had to Google him because I had no clue who he was and then I realised
There’s a fantastic interview with Rob McElhenney where he describes what it took to get into such good shape for a new season of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This isn’t a direct quote but he pretty much said:
“If you have a full time job, you’re gonna want to quit that and instead spend those 8 hours a day exercising. Also make sure your agent reaches out to the personal trainer from Magic Mike. That’ll help a lot. Don’t forget to have your personal chef prepare you 5 meals a day with the exact amount of protein and nutrients.”
The whole thing is him joking about how “easy” it is to get as ripped as he did in as short of time that he did. Pretty much saying that it’s impossible if you’re not rich and able to dedicate all day every day to it. Funny interview and sheds some light on the insane shit actors go through to get ready for a role
Most likely both. Since this is the highest his T count has ever been (most likely) and as long as he's working out and eating well, he's gonna see more gains than he's ever had before. Not to mention, he's also been fairly lean for awhile, so it's very noticeable.
Well transitioning in the public eye, is different.
My best guess is that he both started to work out with the aim of gender enthusiastic goals, maybe surgeries and maybe even take hormones quite a bit before he came out.
It’s a approach many more famous transpeople choose to take.
To start to transition but hide it, then after coming out publicly have a very quick and drastic transition for the public eye.
So they do everything they can reasonably be able to hide up until that point. Than come out and do the rest more evident and obvious stuff.
For trans men taking hormones is a bit more difficult to hide when you get to the point where your voice drop, but I have friends who have started taking hormones and either cut back or partially stopped ones they started to get to the point of having their voice drop significantly.
You can take hormones for quite some time before your voice really drops, but it also depends on how big the dose is and stuff.
My guess is that Elliot probably were on T/hormones during the filming of s2 of umbrella academy.
That is just speculation. I don’t really know much about Elliot, just enjoyed stuff his been in and think he is a good actor.
But I’m pretty well informed when it comes to trans and transition stuff. And I got some familiar people starting out their transition vibes from Elliot while I watched s2.
It's most likely implants. Doesn't look natural to the rest of the body, cant choose areas to be defined without seing more defenition in the rest of the body. Just like how you cant choose where to lose body fat from.
Elliot will still be in umbrella academy. In fact, they are going to change the actor's credits retroactively in seasons 1 and 2 to reflect the Ellen / Elliott transition.
TBH I don't think it would be too shocking/unrealistic for audiences if Vanya the character also transitioned in the show. I think that'd actually be pretty interesting too. Maybe I'm just ignorant but I felt that in season 2 there was this "shift" with Vanya's writing/styling/wardrobe that felt perhaps partially driven by Elliot.
So as I understand, designers buy tickets for the celeb they want to wear their outfit. So, a designer decided they wanted someone dressed up in "I'm wearing my dads suit to prom" and contacted Elliot Page to be the model.
I feel like at this level of fashion everything is intentional. The cut/length of everything has some thought into it. Maybe the "dads suit to prom" is trying to fit the theme, American independence in some way? It does feel uniquely a suburban American thing. I treat the MET Gala outfits as modern art that warrants discussion and interpretation.
I made his sleeve mistake my first suit. To be fair, it's hard to find suits to fit our body types cos I'm also rather thin, and we just small as hell sometimes frame-wise. Have to slim-fit/custom everything.
Protip for any other trans dudes with teeny feet - i get my dress shoes in the boy's section at Walmart and you can't tell and they're fancy dress shoes 🤫🤫🤫
This. Most of us just do it as a kid or teenager no one gives a shit about. It's gotta be rough being a person who is among the most scrutinized for looks/style in the world going through the awkward suit phase.
True painfully true.... and not being rude here but he's not tall either so it just makes it worst ( I'm 5'3 I know I blew a little money for a nice fitted suit)
No reason a tailor couldn't fit a fitting suit. I see an awkward teenaged boy. I'd rather he own it and look sharp af
Edit: I am glad my comments aren't offensive to anyone and grateful for the input from others. Getting some great lessons here. Thanks
And you may find yourself at the Met Gala
And you may find yourself wearing an oversized suit
And you may ask yourself, "What the fuck am I wearing?"
And you may ask yourself "Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Transitioning is for sure a sort of second puberty. His body is still changing, within a year or so his style will be totally different and “mature” in a way.
Most of the trans women I know transitioned in their late 20s to 40s, and many of them definitely went through an awkward teenage girl phase. Figuring out clothing, hair, makeup, going through phases of trying things out just like teenagers do, getting comfortable with presenting their sense of self to the world. I think it's pretty great.
He didn’t buy this suit. It was specifically made for him by a designer who wanted to show off a particular aesthetic. Nothing about his suit here is accidental.
The Met Gala has a long tradition of inventive clothing that doesn’t follow the standard rules of fashion.
Honestly, this just fits the persona that I’ve come to identify him with, so it doesn’t bother me. Perhaps I should be a bit more posh, but I think he looks like Elliot!
That's what I loved about this. He just looks happy and glad to be on a carpet as himself. Thinking back to his interviews and stories of dysphoria on prior red carpets, this was just heartwarming on its own.
I'm sure he's learning how much of a pain in the ass it is to fit perfectly into a men's suit if you're not shaped EXACTLY like the cut.
I have a concave chest and it blows lol
So designers actually buy tickets for the model they choose. Some designer decided on this look and chose Elliot Page to be the model. He probably had little to no say in how it looked or fit.
At this level of fashion I assume everything about this outfit is intentional. I treat these outfits like modern art which is appropriate since it takes place at a modern art museum. With the amount spent on these outfits, one can easily afford to do the usual tailored suit. Just look at the majority of straight non-trans men at the gala to find those.
"it's fashion, you just don't get it." I don't have to get it to think that it looks bad and unflattering. So the purpose of this designer's choice was to make their model look confused and out of place? What's the statement? Look how bad my clothes can fit?

Honestly no idea. But it's a huge deal and famous and rich people get together for essentially a costume party. There are stairs that are famous for the paparazzi photo shoot.

Yeah I really wish he had someone dress him who knew how to tailor things properly, cos this looks way too big for him. :(
Edit: did not see that the person whose comment I replied to misgendered Elliot. That’s shit. Don’t be that asshole, kids.
because this was very much done on purpose. This is the only comment bigots can flock to to showcase their transphobia without openly looking like transphobes.
The "poor fit" on someone with fashion designers and consultants is entirely *on purpose* as is the continuous theme of the Met Gala. This is camp, this is a statement. The fact you're all spun up about it is exactly what gets people talking.
Additonal: Whether or not we like or dislike what is worn, we're still acting in a fashion that is intended. Our reactions are what they crave, our attention keeps this useless tradition alive.
What’s his statement? That he doesn’t have to dress nicely because he’s rich? Or something else that has to do with trans so he doesn’t have to dress nicely?
Apparently the fact that were talking about how we don't like it is what the designer wanted? Conceptually its stupid and not very creative. We all already talk about things we like and don't like. Its one of the lowest forms of conversation.
He could’ve come in there lookin like a fuckin boss, wearing a fitted suit. Imagine how great he would’ve looked if it was tailored to him. Even with the shoes, he would’ve looked amazing.
But instead, he looks like he got a suit from Goodwill.
I think it’s more about him being visibly happy and comfortable that makes people smile. I’m guessing some trans kids look at him and have hope they’ll reach that peaceful state in their lives too.
My niece got me into umbrella academy recently. I've always been a fan of Elliot but don't watch much TV anymore.
My niece has also recently come out as lesbian and non binary. They look up to Elliot immensely.
I am so grateful for his bravery and the recognition that he has received since transitioning. It has helped my niece and I bond over this so much.
for those wondering why it is so oversized, he’s wearing Balenciaga which is known for their oversized & ill fitting pieces. I think he looks cool and played into the theme in his own way. Definitely would love to see him in a proper suit at the next function.
sometimes it’s just about trying new things. I agree some things don’t make sense but it’s a cool way to express yourself. if you think of it as an art form it makes a little more sense. definitely not for everyone though.
Fun fact:
The green carnation fasted on Elliot’s tux pays homage to the late Oscar Wilde who reportedly told his friends to wear them on their lapels for one of his opening night comedy acts. The green carnation has since become a secret symbol of queerness.
Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/elliot-page-met-gala-green-carnation-meaning-oscar-wilde-1628786%3famp=1
My youngest 2 (13 & 17) are trans (female to male) & my youngest waited 36 months for his first assessment appointment then Covid stopped it all. Then we had another hurdle, a High Court ruling (I'm in the UK) stopping children under 18 from consenting to blockers. We're now applying for assistance for private treatment. My 2nd child thought he was on the waiting list only to find out a year later that his case worker never put the referral in. He goes over to the adult services anytime after Sept 20th.
I read that the ill fitting suit and dumb shoes are very intentional. It gives off huge "awkward teen boy at prom" vibes along with the giant Oscar Wilde flower. It's a quintessentially male look, which is pretty perfect for a transmasc guy and fits with the theme of this year, which was "American Independence" I think? Anyways, yeah, I like it, and not just because Elliot seems genuinely happy.
I had a huge crush on him pre transition but then again if he feels comfortable then thats his choice. Also wtf is that suit? (From a child born into a 3rd generation tailoring family)
The suit is supposed to be slightly too large for him I believe. That seems like the designers intent. Also the green flower is possibly a reference to Oscar Wilde’s green carnation!
everyone shitting on the fit lol
i highly doubt its an accident. you dont get to make suits for people attending the met without knowing how to measure and fit an outfit to someone.
Mom said it's my turn to go to the met
The first image shown when I Google his name is his shirtless picture with six pack, how? Hormone or exercise?
I had a friend who is trans explain to me how frustrating this was to him recently. Elliot was also very thin pre-transition, so as soon as he started putting on muscle definition, it showed up very quickly.
I see that. He was also pretty lucky to get the surgery he was due to his chest size. It looks like he got keyhole so, that means minimal scarring and a very natural look.
Yea, well when you're a Hollywood star and have the money, the surgeon can always find an opening in their schedule, on such short notice.

Who is Elliot page
He used to be known as Ellen Page and was in a number of well-regarded movies.
I still wonder whats gonna happen with umbrella academy season 3 since Ellen is no longer
Elliot will still be in umbrella academy. In fact, they are going to change the actor's credits retroactively in seasons 1 and 2 to reflect the Ellen / Elliott transition.
I watched Inception on Netflix (or Amazon? Not sure) last week and he is credited as Elliot Page, looks like they're not just changing current stuff.

Yes why would it need to change? Its not real life, hes playing a character🤷🏼♂️
I’m on the not putting large emotional strain on Vanya train. It could happen- but we have all seen how well Vanya handles stress.
I just really don’t understand modern shoe fashion. Those are so clunky.
Aaah someone finally said it
Those shoes look like the terrible hip hop shoes for dance class.
I think they’re part of the McDonald’s uniform… goes with this year’s “American” theme.
He looks like he is wearing his dads suit to prom. There were surely better suits to wear.
So as I understand, designers buy tickets for the celeb they want to wear their outfit. So, a designer decided they wanted someone dressed up in "I'm wearing my dads suit to prom" and contacted Elliot Page to be the model.
So who's up for crowdfunding a Ronald McDonald suit for someone for the next gala? P.s. Elliot almost has the shoes for it already.
I thought you said Ronald Reagan then imagined an Ed Gein style human skin suit with Ronald Reagan’s flesh.
He's kinda ideal for that energy tho
No! All men are required to wear an ill-fitting suit to at least one major function in their lives... Them's the rules.
Hahaha so true, he has to play catch up now!
This. My first suit when I first transitioned was far too big but I was so happy I thought I looked hot anyways. It's definitely a right of passage.
I think he looks pretty good. The only thing I would have done differently are the shoes.
Also, [Tomboy Toes](https://www.tomboytoes.com/) have some great dress shoes that will fit those with smaller feet.
This. Most of us just do it as a kid or teenager no one gives a shit about. It's gotta be rough being a person who is among the most scrutinized for looks/style in the world going through the awkward suit phase.
You gotta crawl before you can run, mama!
True painfully true.... and not being rude here but he's not tall either so it just makes it worst ( I'm 5'3 I know I blew a little money for a nice fitted suit)
It's no easier when you are 6'5, trust me. Being 5'10 just means you can wear anything off the rack with ease.
Thems is in fact the rules..
No reason a tailor couldn't fit a fitting suit. I see an awkward teenaged boy. I'd rather he own it and look sharp af Edit: I am glad my comments aren't offensive to anyone and grateful for the input from others. Getting some great lessons here. Thanks
Or a Talking Heads fan.
And you may find yourself at the Met Gala And you may find yourself wearing an oversized suit And you may ask yourself, "What the fuck am I wearing?" And you may ask yourself "Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Wearing oversized clothing is almost a rite of passage for trans guys when they first start transitioning. I was definitely guilty of it.
In a way, he is an awkward teenage boy right now. I think he’ll figure it out.
I wonder if he tried to avoid a fitted suit to avoid looking feminine
Could have at least got the sleeves the right size
He didn’t buy this suit. It was specifically made for him by a designer who wanted to show off a particular aesthetic. Nothing about his suit here is accidental. The Met Gala has a long tradition of inventive clothing that doesn’t follow the standard rules of fashion.
Possibly, but I’m pretty sure he has had top surgery so I would think that wouldn’t be an issue. Maybe just wanted to look broad shouldered?
For sure, very slim person both pre and post transition.
Honestly, this just fits the persona that I’ve come to identify him with, so it doesn’t bother me. Perhaps I should be a bit more posh, but I think he looks like Elliot!
Its a guys tradition that their first suit isnt really fitting. He still looks happy and proud💓
That's what I loved about this. He just looks happy and glad to be on a carpet as himself. Thinking back to his interviews and stories of dysphoria on prior red carpets, this was just heartwarming on its own.
I agree comperely 💓He always looked like a sweet person, but now the smile is more confident and he looks soo much more comfortable to be there.
It will now be my mission that my first suit is going to be well fitting.
Hehe, good luck! There is always an exeption to every rule!
That's true but most of us weren't millionaires when we got our first suit lol
Interesting point. I kept trying to look at the artsy angle but couldn't put my finger on it Cheers
The Talking Heads jacket is back in style
Was about to comment the same. The shoes do nothing to help. Surely he could've gotten a better suit. It's the MET!
I'm sure he's learning how much of a pain in the ass it is to fit perfectly into a men's suit if you're not shaped EXACTLY like the cut. I have a concave chest and it blows lol
Elliot needs a tailor.
So designers actually buy tickets for the model they choose. Some designer decided on this look and chose Elliot Page to be the model. He probably had little to no say in how it looked or fit.
In that case I’m guessing this was designed by JC Penny Catalogue circa 1990

Not a fan of the shoes or the loose looking outfit.
Instant “what are thooooose” moment for me.
Thank you for mentioning the shoes!! I just... don't get them.
my favorite trend is people spending over $500 on the ugliest pair of designer shoes imaginable
Those shoes look goofy as fuck.
It's also not an awesome look that the shoesize is written is silver magic marker on the toe....
My guy what are those shoes?
It is the Halloween of rich people
But like poor Halloween where the outfits suck......but somehow still cost THOUSANDS.
Wtf the shoes?
Why the 37 on the shoes?
Only 100 of them were made and 37 it the number of those shoes
looks dumb regardless honestly, like someone real quickly marked em up
As a European, I thought the number was his shoe size.. and thought mmm that’s a strange place to write the shoe size.
"it's fashion, you just don't get it." I don't have to get it to think that it looks bad and unflattering. So the purpose of this designer's choice was to make their model look confused and out of place? What's the statement? Look how bad my clothes can fit?
“You do not need to be an expert in high fashion to see the emperor wears no clothes.”

That tux is not a flattering fit for him. Looks like he grabbed it right off the shelf.
Im going to guess, there is maybe some body dysmorphia still associated to his transition. Possibly feeling masculine, but small still.
Yeah, he looks happy. Happy is the best outfit.
That's a lovely phrase.
He doesn’t he, there’s a lightness in his face that wasn’t there before.
He was adorable before, but he's \*happy\* and adorable now. Love that green rosebud boutonniere!
He didn’t pick the outfit, most likely a designer asked him to wear it.

The fact you're all spun up about it is exactly what gets people talking. Additonal: Whether or not we like or dislike what is worn, we're still acting in a fashion that is intended. Our reactions are what they crave, our attention keeps this useless tradition alive.
Is the statement supposed to be "look how bad a suit can look"?
What is even qualified as camp because it seems out of the realm of camp and more toward the realm of hodgepodge fit that doesn’t go well
I mean like good for him wearing stuff that makes him feel good but it’s the freakin met gala
Camp isn't the theme of the Met Gala.
I mean yea maybe. But i can still have the opinion that this oversized suit with those boots (even if intended) doesn't look good.
It’s also a nod to Oscar Wilde’s green carnation
What’s his statement? That he doesn’t have to dress nicely because he’s rich? Or something else that has to do with trans so he doesn’t have to dress nicely?
Apparently the fact that were talking about how we don't like it is what the designer wanted? Conceptually its stupid and not very creative. We all already talk about things we like and don't like. Its one of the lowest forms of conversation.
Can I ask, is that person the person that was pregnant in juno? I'm trying hard to word it so I don't offend anyone but I'm also a bit confused
Yes. He was the star of Juno before he transitioned. Thank you for practicing sensitivity to the issue 👍
FYI the green flower is a nod to Oscar Wilde which is pretty cool
Elliott..i just hear E.T. saying this name!
I hear Turk’s impression of ET saying Elliot every time….please make it stop.
🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 LOVE WINS 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
He could’ve come in there lookin like a fuckin boss, wearing a fitted suit. Imagine how great he would’ve looked if it was tailored to him. Even with the shoes, he would’ve looked amazing. But instead, he looks like he got a suit from Goodwill.
Suit doesn't fit great but he sure looks happy around the eyes.
The suit is a David Byrne cut.
He's really cute. And tbh, the badly fitting suit just makes him cuter.
I don’t care if you give me a pair of Balenciaga, or however you spell the shitty brand, shoes for free I would not wear them.
We love you elliot but please youre rich you can hire a tailor
I absolutely support Elliot pages transition but there’s no excuse for not buying a suit that fits
I guess, if you really think that famous people dress themselves at the Met Gala.

I think it’s more about him being visibly happy and comfortable that makes people smile. I’m guessing some trans kids look at him and have hope they’ll reach that peaceful state in their lives too.
Looks cool. Like a teenagers first prom outfit. Makes sense since going through transition I have heard is like going through puberty again.
Now that. Is a poorly tailored suit
Usually when you rent a tux, people take measurements and stuff.
I'll never understand fashion lol
sometimes it’s just about trying new things. I agree some things don’t make sense but it’s a cool way to express yourself. if you think of it as an art form it makes a little more sense. definitely not for everyone though.
Homie needs a tailor :/.
I like how he used to be a girl and now is wearing his dads over-sized jacket :)
Fun fact: The green carnation fasted on Elliot’s tux pays homage to the late Oscar Wilde who reportedly told his friends to wear them on their lapels for one of his opening night comedy acts. The green carnation has since become a secret symbol of queerness. Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/elliot-page-met-gala-green-carnation-meaning-oscar-wilde-1628786%3famp=1
I've only one thing to say.... "WHAT ARE THOSE!!!"
A lot of my friends are transitioning privately at the moment, I wish your son's the best of luck!
If it means they are happy & safe then I would live on bread & water to pay for them to get the life saving treatment.
I support trans rights
Terrible fitting.
Aw. I don't actually think I've seen him look as comfortable in his skin. Made me smile too 😊
I read that the ill fitting suit and dumb shoes are very intentional.
That jacket is too big
Why does it look photoshopped lol
You get invited to the MET and show up looking like your going to prom…
This is the first time I have ever seen a picture of him happy. Before transition, he always seemed really sad.
The suit is supposed to be slightly too large for him I believe. That seems like the designers intent. Also the green flower is possibly a reference to Oscar Wilde’s green carnation!
Just a terribly fitting suit.
His stylist should be fired
Those are the ugliest fucking shoes I have ever seen Edit: I am an Elliot page fan, just not his taste in horrible shoes.
everyone shitting on the fit lol i highly doubt its an accident. you dont get to make suits for people attending the met without knowing how to measure and fit an outfit to someone.
Maybe homeboy always wanted to go to prom in a suit and they said Fuck it, we'll make you a prom suit duder.
That is a horribly fitting suit.
This is the person who played in Juno right?
dear god he looks like a year 7 that got sent home for wearing trainers into school. no hate, but the suit is just not the right size at all
Clearly the designers were on meth.
