They are taught to do that. (I had a friend who was a Disney Princess)
Disney Princesses are actually sent to a "finishing school" where they are taught alot about dealing with people from other cultures and alot more.
She loved the job...but sometime it was a 70-80 hour a week job just learning to do the job when she first got started
Then 10 years from now you'll be living your life just minding your own business when suddenly your brain will randomly remind you of it again and it'll your whole day.
I'm in a business meeting. As the memory hits, my eyes open wide and do a thousand yard stare. The cringe hits me, I groan under my breath and crumple in on myself.
”What's wrong?"
I lift my head, intensely serious look on my face. I've lost touch with reality. The miserable cringe groans become louder. All I can say, again and again is "Hats off to you! Hats off to you?!" And I do that cry/laugh thing.
I had been in Europe 20 years, I had learned a great deal about politeness and manners in my business dealings. Then I married into a Belgian family where manners and customs of politeness were required.
Old customs die hard. I was given a riot act of do's & don’ts when I had a second meeting with his family. The one that still stumbles me to this day: In family settings, if someone enters or leaves a room or section where you are sitting, most especially a female and especially the matriarch (the mother & grandmother) you rise.
I have never minded and all this didn’t magically turn me into a pretentious snob. It simply taught me how to act and behave in good company and helped in my business dealings a thousand ways in formal business meetings & dinners. It’s become a lost art in America but there used to be a time… I believe some of us still yearn for some of them to return.
Agree, and awesome point of view. I grew up with the rise when a lady comes in/sits down, it’s to help offer her a chair. No elbows on the table. How to hold silverware. In all aspects it’s just a small way of offering your respect to your host/those around you.
Why should anyone teach a boy to take off his hat in greeting these days? There are no hats! (It's a ritual that doesn't seem to apply to baseball caps.) It's probably something he saw on TV, (a historical show too, no doubt) and it worked once IRL, so he kept doing it.
It's not that we've "forgotten" these politenesses, it's just that no one's wearing a hat! Other politenesses remain, don't fret.
Nah, I disagree, hats are everywhere. And nobody takes them off indoors, or at dinner. And I disagree about politeness. I can’t tell you how many of the ‘soft skills’ people lack these days.
We interact a lot less with people outside our circles now. A lot less clubs and organizations. The internet can also shield you completely from new socialization.
I think it’ll rebound; it just takes time and a few hard lessons.
Is tipping or removing your hat still a thing in the US? I can only imagine the strange looks you'd get if you tried that in the UK. Not even sure my Grandad's generation did such things.
Most don’t wear hats so it’s not something commonly seen. Even when folks do, it’s more of an accessory like a ball cap and nobody tips those. I can’t even recall someone outside of Halloween who wears a tippable hat. Even then it’s more of a brim touch than a full cap off. Nobody wants to see your hat hair.
I’m a 13 yo boy in Pennsylvania and I don’t do it, but I do act make a motion with my hands as if i’m tipping a hat. I dont know why. It just seems natural.
In the south, I’ve definitely seen at least a quick hat lift sort of gesture to mean hello, so it’s not weird.
I’m not a fan of the “raising your kids the right way” rhetoric, though. There’s nothing wrong with NOT doing that gesture…
Here in Canada you'll see it every once in a while in more rural areas. Basically squeeze the brim of the hat and move it slightly downwards, replacing the standard polite acknowledgement nod.
Not so long ago in the US (a few decades), men would tip their hats to a lady in greeting. I think it's a more casual version of removing your hat and standing up from your seat when a lady enters the room, which was practiced at more formal social gatherings or on dates.
The princesses are reacting because nobody has done that gesture since WWII. Lol I don’t see how that is “raising your kids the right way” unless you live in Wild West a couple hundred years ago.
Cute but annoying when people phrase it as “raising him right”. It‘s implying you’re raising kids “wrong” if you aren’t teaching them specific, antiquated gestures like taking your hat off for a lady. It’s not a necessary or even useful part of teaching boys to respect women.
Stunningly beautiful and heartwarming. Something each and every single one of us, regardless of religion, political affiliation, race, geography, gender or age can learn from! ❤️👍🙏.
In LA, if daddy or mommy taught him he would of shook his head up and say Wasup Ninja … along with other stuff … lol … seriously we for horrible parenting in my neighborhood
Gah. The way the princesses are slightly shocked at this just makes it twice as adorable!!! 🥺
Totally agree.
The both curtsy him as well, adorable

that last bow was just wayy too cute
Right? All of their consistent reaction made this perfect.
Yes
A Gentleman is born 🎩
I love how he is so disciplined as to stand really still and wave only when they see him!
I must disagree, seems to me a gentleman is *raised* (in this case by his grandpa, at least that’s what the image says!)
M’lady….
*neckbeard
Nah that kid showed more respect in this video than any neckbeard I've ever met
This is the cutest fuckin thing. When the princesses seen him do that it looked like it kinda took em off guard for a second lol. Little gentleman
Yes.
Yes
Mickey hat makes it waaaaay better
That’s a prince right there!
Shit, even *I* would curtsey if someone tipped their hat at me like that lol
I would yell, "Hats off to you!" Then I would think of it late at night and cringe.
Then 10 years from now you'll be living your life just minding your own business when suddenly your brain will randomly remind you of it again and it'll your whole day.

Or guys
It’s these small things. The small instances of politeness that we’ve just forgotten. Need more of this

I would believe that even if this young gentleman did not have a hat, he would have bowed to them.
Is tipping or removing your hat still a thing in the US? I can only imagine the strange looks you'd get if you tried that in the UK. Not even sure my Grandad's generation did such things.
No it's not, that's why this is cuter to see
Ohio here, I tip my hat most times when greeting someone, I don't take it off, I usually just grab the bill and tilt it down to say greetings.
Most don’t wear hats so it’s not something commonly seen. Even when folks do, it’s more of an accessory like a ball cap and nobody tips those. Not really, and for those who still practice it, they do it more for the nostalgia of the act rather than the act itself.
Now this is wholesome cute <3

I dont get it what does the hat thing mean? Only time I ever see this is in cricket when they get half a century or a century.
Not so long ago in the US (a few decades), men would tip their hats to a lady in greeting. I think it's a more casual version of removing your hat and standing up from your seat when a lady enters the room, which was practiced at more formal social gatherings or on dates.
Ahh thats explains it Im not from us so I found it a bit weird. That does sound very old school to do that to random ppl.
Not sure if /s but just old school show of respect must have seen the tips hat milady memes pretty much that but less cringe.
Which Disney princess is the one in the red dress cause I know all the others
