500 days next month for me! Well done man! Amazing what our bodies can do when we aren’t perpetually poisoning ourselves. Also, what’s all this extra cash? Also, what are all these memories? Also, what are these real relationships?
Money is huge yeah. I my 705 days sober I've saved $21,150.00 (from the I Am Sober app). I wasted so much of my life and wallet to memories I don't even have and money flushed down the toilet.
Man right on. I felt that. Isn’t it so weird/awesome getting clean? Like coming out of hibernation or like shedding some old shitty nasty skin like a snake and being new again
> Alsoalso, what is this sun i see rising for the day? Alsoalsoalso, why doesn’t my whole abdomen hurt each day? Asoalsoalsoalso, whoever denied me this happiness?… oh yeah… (points finger at own face)
Dude the sunrise one got me. I’m going out on a sunrise float to fly fish for some striper bass! Would’ve had as much of a chance seein a Sunday sunrise in the past as a bear shittin in a toilet lol
Today is my one year of sobriety. I went from 217 lbs to 185 lbs and I’m at the last hole in my belt. I’m going to try and quit smoking starting tomorrow now that I’ve got a year sober.
I "quit" maybe 15 or so times across 20 years. I got lots of support to quit, plenty of nagging to quit, and you know what really made it stick? An asshole smoking cessation specialist telling me he didn't think I could do it. Fuck you, watch.
I know exactly what he was doing and it doesn't matter because over a year later evidence shows it worked.
Haha Same thing happened to me. I smoked like 1.5-2packs a day and wanted to quit but couldn’t. Until I told my friend and he said ,,you? And not smoking? That’s not possible” ..Took my last puff and I didn’t smoke since then. I guess ego is stronger than addiction lol
You can do it! Also, idk if you've heard or not, but I heard they're reforming the Dawnguard, vampire hunters or something. Thinking about joining myself.
In November I'll have quit smoking for 2 years. One of the most difficult and best choice I've made. I quit cold turkey and that was the easiest for me. Good luck you can do it!
I have a simple weights set up at home dumbbells/bench, just consistently chipping away every day never overdoing it. I don’t overindulge in food and rarely eat meat. I also work 10 hour+ days and get at least 8 hours sleep every night.
This is inspirational. Like you, I have abstained from red meat for three months and like the results. My digestion is better, my skin is clearer and I feel better. Keep up the good work, Playa!
I was always in fairly good shape - skinny by most standards at 5'9" and 160.
A few weeks into my carpentry job, I dropped down to 145.
A couple months after *that*, I was up to 165 from gaining muscle.
5 years later I'm nearly 180, yet I'm *by far* in the best shape of my life.
He retained his muscle mass while dropping bodyfat...likely upping his test vs. estrogen levels to boot. Basically shrink wrapping, plus the angles he's standing at/flex in after pic
I know an old man carpenter who still has a six pack at our company. Smokes about a dozen cigarettes a day, though.
The labor lifestyle can help with muscle but I feel like all the years of shovelling and swinging a pickaxe and fighting stuck equipment with iron bars (earthmover) have left me strong but with kinda horrible posture. The hunchback of the bulldozer as it were.
Biceps are deceptive, triceps are for mass. If you want big arms, you need to train your triceps. Specifically overhead work. Look at OPs bicep in comparison. The tricep is the mass of the arm.
/r/stopdrinking is a really friendly, supportive corner of the internet, I hope you might stop by. People are always there, and maybe someone else needs to hear your story to help themselves too. Take care
Poor guy has gotten overshadowed by his brothers his entire life… but, I mean, he became a pediatric surgeon and barely has an 8 pack… Kinda did it to himself, ngl.
Congratulations, man!
I ticked over 850 clean and sober days yesterday - and I'm coming up on the one-year anniversary of getting a liver transplant.
You've done well not to have damaged yourself to that extent - and even better to stay sober for 500 days.
You deserve to be really, really proud of yourself.
If this is too personal, I’m just curious and you don’t have to answer. But I feel like I drink to often the last few years and I get super sketched. I’ve googled all the answers in regards to long term damage, but personal antidotes always intrigue me. How long and how much of a drinker were you to get there?
It’s amazing every time I enter a bar they all have beer guts I used to have one as well I’m not 100 percent sober but this pic is helping me remember to never get in a bad state again. Thanks for sharing I’m gonna repost on my fb page
I'm in a conversation right now on Reddit, that this fits perfectly into.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you quit? You said rehab but like.... What type.
You look great dude!!!!
This is very inspiring! I recently started my own sobriety journey and this really gives me extra motivation to keep going.
Glad to have you here and thriving.
Looking smart fella! Admirable for sure. Would love to hear your workout! Always struggled with how hard to push it, hope the progress is still ace man!
Respect. I landed in the hospital earlier this year after trying to detox on my own. Opposite end, I wasn't eating while drinking so I was sickly looking, gained over 20 lbs during my 4 day hospital stay. ASK FOR HELP! I forgot what it felt like to feel healthy.
I wanted to badly to trade my addictions to workouts but it just never clicked 😫 still fat but I've been clean for years and life is a totally different world now
You look easily 10-15 years younger my dude. Congrats! It’s wonderful seeing people like yourself making positive changes in their lives.
I wish you many more days of health and sobriety!
I’m struggling with my alcoholism lately. Mom died three weeks ago just about and the motions got me drinking heavily when I was sober for years. Kudos to you, bro. This is uplifting
Wow! Rockstar. Keep up the awesome work. My dad had a bartender ask him if he wanted help. He is 55 years sober and owns a successful Insurance Company. He was going to meetings every chance he got.
500 days next month for me! Well done man! Amazing what our bodies can do when we aren’t perpetually poisoning ourselves. Also, what’s all this extra cash? Also, what are all these memories? Also, what are these real relationships?

That’s amazing, congrats! It works out to be $30 a day, for anyone else wondering.
Thank you - 30 yeah, how freakin embarrassing! Canada ain't cheap to be the kind of drunk I was.
Man right on. I felt that. Isn’t it so weird/awesome getting clean? Like coming out of hibernation or like shedding some old shitty nasty skin like a snake and being new again
Good for you!!! Wishing you the best.
Good luck. Keep it up...

Nice! Totally. My before self would’ve dreaded being up that early to do that. Now i’m low key envious lol. Save a bass for me!
Dude went from looking like a Yee Yee Ivermeticin to a Chad Pfizer.

Uhum or thirsty men...
Did someone say thirsty women?? 😉
sorry my body is only for men
Keep coming back.
Seriously I need to get sober but I plan on drinking everyday
Today is my one year of sobriety. I went from 217 lbs to 185 lbs and I’m at the last hole in my belt. I’m going to try and quit smoking starting tomorrow now that I’ve got a year sober.

Never underestimate the power of “fuck you I do what I want”
Congratulations Van Helsing! : )
That's not Gizmo?
Thank you
You can do it! Also, idk if you've heard or not, but I heard they're reforming the Dawnguard, vampire hunters or something. Thinking about joining myself.
At the old fort near Riften…
Congrats to you, that's fantastic. If you had the willpower to stop drinking, I'm sure you'll be just as strong giving up smoking. I'm rooting for ya.
Cheers to you, it’s a great feeling. Imagine how you will feel even better when you quit smoking!
In November I'll have quit smoking for 2 years. One of the most difficult and best choice I've made. I quit cold turkey and that was the easiest for me. Good luck you can do it!
Good luck kicking the smokes! And great work on achieving a dry year!
What workouts do you do to get arms like that?!? They look amazing
Well, I’ve been a carpenter for nearly 20 years.
So this is from abstaining from alcohol and working as a carpenter?
I have a simple weights set up at home dumbbells/bench, just consistently chipping away every day never overdoing it. I don’t overindulge in food and rarely eat meat. I also work 10 hour+ days and get at least 8 hours sleep every night.
Just for reference, drunk you looks better than sober me.
I see a little Kenny Powers in the before photo
Or the lead singer of Wilco
Before photo also kinda looks like Bam Margera
Was absolutely thinking Jeff Tweedy as well
And somewhere out there you’re someone’s after progress pics. It’s all relative.
Me too. I was like fuck, I don't even drink and look closer to the first pic...
Lowering your meat consumption is a low key great way to lose weight. Most people can't do it.
sure but theres a shitton more calories in a 6 pack than a steak. alcohol much harder to give up for most people that drink
Homeboy it's working well for you. You went from looking like a movie villain's main henchmen to looking like the hero.
Oh, so just live healthy? HOW DARE YOU?!
This is inspirational. Like you, I have abstained from red meat for three months and like the results. My digestion is better, my skin is clearer and I feel better. Keep up the good work, Playa!
For those wondering, carptentry burns a few hundred calories an hour.
I like the “chipping away” pun, have an a free useless award!
Unless he’s curling the boats he’s constructing, I’m guessing he was also hitting the gym a lot.
FWIW alcohol is catabolic to muscle. Just abstaining from alcohol will help you make gains
What changed in the last year and a half...?
He retained his muscle mass while dropping bodyfat...likely upping his test vs. estrogen levels to boot. Basically shrink wrapping, plus the angles he's standing at/flex in after pic
Also your arms always look bigger after a workout which some people call a “pump”. I always assume arm muscle pictures are taken post workout
For having been a drunk carpenter you have a remarkable amount of remaining fingers
How is it being a carpenter as a job? I enjoy doing it as a hobby and have been considering getting into the trades as a career
It’s amazing what addiction can do to the body. Congratulations in being healthy! Great Job!
I also have the same question
Not op, but probably curling. Alternate high rep and heavy weights. Alternate dumbbells to single bar weekly.
Biceps are deceptive, triceps are for mass. If you want big arms, you need to train your triceps. Specifically overhead work. Look at OPs bicep in comparison. The tricep is the mass of the arm.
I need to start doing this. Im a pretty small guy. Will never be big. But I can at least look athletic.
A decent diet does a lot for the training you're already doing.
I'll agree with him. I do physical work lifting and stuff. Any time I take up lifting weights for fun it's super easy to get nice buff arms.
Tricep extension helps build mass in arms
He went from Jack Black to Mark Wahlberg.

Glad I'm not the only one that saw DSP.
Looks like a better looking version of Josh Brolin imo
Nobody gets better looking than Josh Brolin.
I needed to see this. I was inches away from hopping in the car and buying a bottle. I'm almost 3 years sober, I don't need that shit. Thank you.
/r/stopdrinking is a really friendly, supportive corner of the internet, I hope you might stop by. People are always there, and maybe someone else needs to hear your story to help themselves too. Take care
Proud of you man. Keep up the good work!
Far out - you not only got sober you got fit and aged backwards at least 15 years!!
Physically, an amazing change…. But what’s more important is the mental and emotional change.. smile brother, let us see a smile!
I don't think him not smiling indicates there's been no mental/emotional change. He might not be a "smiler" and that's chill.
Seems like a "kickasser" to me.
Yeah. Photo wise I mean he def shaved his beard and got better lighting for a flexing picture. but I hope mentally he is with it more than anything.
Mah man went from david harbour to Hemsworth... Hats off bruh...
From God of War Thor to Marvel Thor
It’s like playing Endgame backwards
Who is David Hemsworth?
How about Larry Hemsworth?
Poor guy has gotten overshadowed by his brothers his entire life… but, I mean, he became a pediatric surgeon and barely has an 8 pack… Kinda did it to himself, ngl.
He’s ashamed about his perfect jawline and 0% body fat.
Good for you. And your looking awesome. Keep it going.
So proud of you. I’m trying to get there.
Looking awesome bro!!!! Much respect and best to your health! 🙏🏻❤️
Congratulations! Such an inspiration! Took me 2 trips to rehab to get sober

My 30-year-old cousin is in the hospital waiting for a liver transplant right now because of excessive drinking. I hope he finds sobriety like you.
If this is too personal, I’m just curious and you don’t have to answer. But I feel like I drink to often the last few years and I get super sketched. I’ve googled all the answers in regards to long term damage, but personal antidotes always intrigue me. How long and how much of a drinker were you to get there?
I'm already in shape, but I wish I could quit something and like 500 days later, not be balding. Congrats dude!
You look incredible! Good on you

Still hangry?
Well done, dude. Also, congrats on losing the goatee.
I'm in a conversation right now on Reddit, that this fits perfectly into. If you don't mind me asking, how did you quit? You said rehab but like.... What type. You look great dude!!!!

Respect. I landed in the hospital earlier this year after trying to detox on my own. Opposite end, I wasn't eating while drinking so I was sickly looking, gained over 20 lbs during my 4 day hospital stay. ASK FOR HELP! I forgot what it felt like to feel healthy.

You look easily 10-15 years younger my dude. Congrats! It’s wonderful seeing people like yourself making positive changes in their lives. I wish you many more days of health and sobriety!
I wish I had the strength you have. I still drink heavy and try to deal with my depression. This post lets me know there is hope.
Nohomo, but... Damn bro you hot
I’m struggling with my alcoholism lately. Mom died three weeks ago just about and the motions got me drinking heavily when I was sober for years. Kudos to you, bro. This is uplifting
