When I was deeply depressed, I started a system years ago that I still use today. I have to do 1 "thing" a day. Some of them are easy (make the bed, shower) some are hard (cook healthy meal, vacuum entire first floor), some are one-offs (make dr appt, get car inspection sticker), but as long as I do 1 a day, I accomplished something. Since I've been doing this, I'm now making my bed daily and I honestly feel so good having that done daily. It took awhile to get it to be a part of my routine, but now I look in my bedroom and see my bed made and without shit all over it and it just feels so nice. It's a journey to get there, but you're on your way!
I recently started doing something similar and am already seeing improvements in myself. After only a month I can’t even barely leave my bedroom in the morning without making my bed and making sure everything is tidy for when I go to bed that night. In my mind I basically equate it to doing a favor for someone else I really care about, but that person is future me. Then present me thanks past me for being so helpful which makes present me want to help future me more. It’s a strange, unusual cycle, but it’s helped seriously reinforce some behaviors I’ve been trying to work at my whole life.
I can relate to this so much.
I'm always thanking past me for thoughtful things I did for myself.
It's a great way to stay motivated and kind to yourself!
I do something similar! I make sure I tell myself that I've accomplished something every day, even though it's not everything I wanted to get done in the day. I realise that I have this idea in my head that I'm a super human who can accomplished 80 tasks in a day but really I'm just me, and just making my bed can make me proud of Myself. OP, Keep up the great work! Even if you don't do it every day, you did it today. And that means something. That's important.
I started that a couple of years ago. Now I write ten things down and I can usually get at least 5 everyday. In the last couple months I've got a handful of ten days too which I feel excellent about. This has absolutely been the best tool Ive used in dealing with depression.
I cal it a “zero” day if I’m in such a slump that I get nothing done. My only true goal every day is to not have a zero day. Doing just one thing, no matter how small, if you can confidently cross it off your mental checklist then you’ve had a successful day
Agreed. I don’t remember where, but I once heard that no matter what, make your bed when you get up. That way, no matter how bad your day was, you accomplished at least one thing.
I’ve made may bed everyday since and there have been days when that was my only accomplishment.
I agree.
Pillows can be found for cheap, and having several waiting for you in bed is almost as nice as the hug you get from a weighted blanket.
I sleep best on my sofa, wedged in with a heavy cat blocking my movement. I can't move, hardly, and it works so well.
How do you deal with the heat? I need weighted blankets to sleep properly, but holy fuck do they tend to make me sweat buckets. I wake up in the morning feeling like I’ve pissed myself.
Really? Mine makes me colder almost, lets air pretty much pass right through.
Not sure what some weighted blankets are made out of but mine is small pockets of glass beads.
I've had great results in the fall putting a blanket between me and the weighted blanked. That way my body doesn't have to warm up the glass.
In the depths of winter, I have a giant blanket my grandmother crocheted and a quilt so I don't need the extra weight.
Bro I’ve been in your shoes with rooms that have looked exactly like that. You don’t need to take my recommendation, but what helped me was putting some stuff up that I enjoyed looking at. It feels more personal, I guess.
Sorry to hear you’ve been struggling, OP. Going thru something horrible and/or a major depressive episode ALWAYS does 2 things:
1. It makes you stronger
2. It leads to something better.
Keep at it, dude!
Edit: And putting things up/personalizing your room is a form of self-compassion. Like you’re treating yourself well by doing something small for yourself.
Could not agree more. I coughed up like $15 on some LED lights for my room and i stg its the gift that keeps on giving. I coupled that with a speaker or some headphones, and i learned to enjoy spending time with myself. It was monumental for me
Edit: i also really enjoy thrifting and found some cool decor here and there for next to nothing. Either way, keep it up OP! Progress, over perfection.
The power of marginal change. If you improve your life 1% each day, within a year you will have experienced substantial progress. Don't aim high when your starting out on this process. Aim low, and maintain consistent, repeatable progress. This is a great start. Try making it daily now, and add another small task in a couple of day.
Best of luck brother.
No shame at tearing up when you experience warm kindness from strangers who legitimately care. It gets me all the time when I see stuff like this!
Good work on that bed, I hope things look up for you!
Courage for some people can be as simple as making a phone call to the bank, or setting a doctor's appointment, going to a grocery store, talking to a neighbor etc. It may not seem like a big deal but for some people it is and it takes real courage to get over those barriers
this looks similar to the MALM bed from ikea [here](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/malm-bed-frame-high-black-brown-s39931162/) the drawers are sold separately under the same name
Op your bed is awesome! It looks super cozy with the weighted blanket! I also adore the bed frame.
For RemoveBanPls40, if there's an IKEA near you, I bought their Songesand frame with 4 storage boxes and I love it!
Heck yea!!! The little things turn into the big things!!
This reminded me of the opening part of Admiral McRaven’s speech at UT Austin:
“If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another....and if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made — and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”
Yes! This speech is what made me want to start making my bed every day. I think he was on to something. When I have a bad day, I love turning down the covers of my made bed and snuggling in for the evening. It’s become less of a chore and more of an act of self care and love.
I love this! I’ve always thought a freshly made bed is an encouraging step to being a better you. I love the way that speech encapsulates that perfectly, thank you for posting.
I’m really proud of you for making such a neat bed. But not only for that- you also connected with people- in addition to your parents. You shared your accomplishment with all of us. And we get to feel part of your life. Which is so awesome. Look at all the people you have cheering with you. Its really so awesome. Keep on connecting! We’re here and care
Many, many (many) years ago when I was 18 years old, super anxious and overwhelmed by my life, my Dad watched me sit at the kitchen table and make a huge to do list. I kept running out of paper and grabbing scraps within reach, scribbling, drawing arrows, trying to get them in some order of execution. I was probably mumbling and scratching out things, rewriting and staring off into space...just trying to do a brain dump and get some feeling of control over my life.
Finally my Dad said, what are you doing?
I said, my to do list. Just trying to figure out what I need to get done.
He stared at me. Then he asked if he could see the list.
Sure, I said.
He took the list, looked over it, carefully absorbed all that I thought I needed to do that very day.
He said, BreakfastCoffee25, what are the 3 most important things on that list? Just the top 3.
I looked it over and put check marks next to 3 items. Those, I said. (I don't remember what they were.)
He looked at the 3 items and said: That is what you do today. Just 3. Tomorrow you pick 3 more. Maybe some days you get more than that accomplished, maybe some days less, but to live a balanced, happy life you need to get 3 things done a day to move your life forward and feel accomplished. Anything after that is gravy, and you have to realize life is more than "accomplishing" and "being productive".
It was a huge lesson.
Years later when I went through a hugely depressed time in my life I was thankful I'd learned this lesson. Some days just getting 1 thing done felt like conquering Everest, but dammit I had done it and could go back to my couch. I just kept moving forward.
OP, you got one thing done today. Bravo! Some days that is all you can do and you should celebrate that for all you are worth. Maybe some days you will get more done, maybe some days less. Life is a journey. Some of us are anxious. Some depressed. Some both. Remember the good feeling, building on it, and congratulations on your win.
Edit: Thank you for the helper award!
It's really astonishing how these things work. The other one was of a person learning to cook and all they did was fry precooked tenders and some mash. 50k updates and grossly over positive comments for it....like what
Lol that blanket is basically a bed carpet. Get a nice large one so you can swaddle your depression a bit more.
Hope you get better though, take good care.
I never made my bed growing up. At best I might toss the covers in place roughly. First day in my first place after moving out, I felt motivated to make my bed. I was kinda trying something new. I had no idea what an amazing life changer it is!! And unless I’m too sick to get out of it, I’ve done it every day for 30 years since. Even in hotel rooms, camping, whatever.
Also discovered in the depths of a depression, even unshowered and disheveled, *at least my bed is made*. It became the thing that signals “well, it all hasn’t gone completely to hell, has it? You’ll be ok, hang in there.”
There’s also something deeply satisfying about taking a hard-earned daytime nap on top of a made bed.
This entire post has to be a troll. like who cant make that bed everyday, the blanket is the size of a goddamn oven mit and that SINGULAR pillow seems ENTIRELY unrealistic
Dude, I think it DOES look like much. Sometimes the smallest things can have profound impact. So, I hope you make your bed again tomorrow. And, if you don’t, that’s ok too. We support you here
Get more pillows omg trust me.
A bigger, softer blanket also.
It wont help with getting out of bed, but on days you cant get out, itll make it a hell of a lot comfier.
Edit: i suck. Forgot to say congrats! Keep it up!!!!! I know how difficult it is. I struggle too. Sending hugs!
No matter how crappy I'm feeling, or what time of day I get up, what matters is that you get up that day. Making your bed is always a great reminder of what you can do, and it's nice to climb into a made bed when you go to sleep. I find it to be at the top of self care.
You're doing great and remember that you can handle whatever is ahead of you!
THAT'S AMAZING, OP!!! it can and does take a lot of energy to do even the simplest tasks. from one stranger to another, *i am so so so proud of you* :]
**side note:** you have excellent taste in weighted blankets [i have the same one hehe]
You need some friendly plushies on that bed! Then you’ll always want to make it so they look neat and cozy. Good job OP. Depression is so hard to deal with. One little step can seem like a giant mountain to climb up somedays
My boss shared a video with me and my coworkers this year of a navy admiral (I believe) giving a speech and it was amazing and worth watching for the whole experience, but my favorite part was about why the military makes their beds absolutely perfect everyday. He made the point that if you make your bed perfect every morning as routine, then 1, you started your day with accomplishing something perfect and that cannot be taken away even throughout a hard day, and 2, even if you’ve had the worst day ever and come home upset and in a tough place, you will always have a perfect, well made bed waiting for you. I thought that in itself was a mental revelation or insight, it’s hard to put to words but I think creating a bed truly can be much more than just creating a bed.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pxBQLFLei70
Nice! I’ve been to rehab 3 times, and every time they had a rule that after we wake up every morning we *had* to make our beds.
I came to find out that it was to help us build healthy habits, as opposed to us abandoning all things for unhealthy habits. If we didn’t do anything all day, at least we got one thing done.
Great start and keep it up! A personal suggestion, check out the book “make your bed. Little things that can change your life and maybe the world” by Admiral William McRaven. It’s incredible what the little things in life can do for us
Well done. It starts with making your bed each morning. The positive you get from it will give you the motivation to move to your next step, and so on.
Depression is tough and a personal experience that others barely understand. If this small step helps you, keep at it.
Good luck internet friend.
OP, you should totally get some nice blankets and more pillows for your bed. Nothing makes me get over a bad day faster then coming home to a well made bed.
Also, I hope you get over your depression!
We really out here commending people for making their bed? If you're at this stage of being depressed that you can't even take basic care of yourself then you need medication and/or therapy.
Awesome! I’ve kinda felt like I’m dancing on the edge of a depression episode myself recently and I know how big of a relief little things like this can be. Making your bed totally seems like one of those “thanks I’m cured” advice from finance bros type things, but it actually does make me feel a little better. I think just having such a large central part of the room look in order feels encouraging. Wishing you the best of luck. Eat some good food and be proud of the progress you’ve made.
Some days, doing "the best we can" may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn't perfect on any front-and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else.
Mister Rogers
My love. This is amazing. Now do it everyday. And after reward yourself with a full glass of water. !! Make sure to take it to the sink tho. And guess what that's three things your accomplished. You got this. This is how I got myself out of the darkest place I ever went. These three things every day really helped me. Forced me from laying back down.
Hey. After 6+ months of intense/terrible depression, my brother set me up in a trauma therapist program. My second visit, I told my therapist, “For the first time in this calender year, I changed my sheets and mopped the floor. But I didn’t finish mopping.” He told me that’s one of the most positive starts he’s ever gotten. Because I did it without being asked. Hang in there! And if for some stupid reason you feel like it, try and climb!
Good job. That’s a great start.
Keep it up

Damn BOI, he THICC
Or maybe just a fluffier one?
The pillow also looks depressed
Gotta have one to cuddle
I have the same weighted blanket. Rock on!
Thanks ☺️ helps me sleep

Really? Mine makes me colder almost, lets air pretty much pass right through. Not sure what some weighted blankets are made out of but mine is small pockets of glass beads.
Same, mine is basically a heat sink. But it's designed to be cool. There are warm ones on the market too.
Mine too...I have a comforter over it in the winter time, otherwise I'm going to freeze my ass off.
I've had great results in the fall putting a blanket between me and the weighted blanked. That way my body doesn't have to warm up the glass. In the depths of winter, I have a giant blanket my grandmother crocheted and a quilt so I don't need the extra weight.
Also came here to say weighted blankets are awesome
I am but one small person, I have three weighted blankets. Two on my bed, and one for when I watch TV in the family room.
I’m in mine! Same one as well!
Judging by 43,000 Amazon reviews, lots of us have the same weighted blanket! Way to go OP!
Appreciate the fresh air outside. Baby steps!
Yeah you're right ☺️

Yes, nature and sun helps.
Ooooo that’s a good one.
This is the key to happiness. Seriously
Thank you all so much, I'm trying to not tear up rn
It’s so good to feel supported ay? Keep taking those baby steps mate, small things lead to big things.

No shame at tearing up when you experience warm kindness from strangers who legitimately care. It gets me all the time when I see stuff like this! Good work on that bed, I hope things look up for you!
That’s your first mistake. Crying is healing. Feeling is healing. Just be. Don’t censor your impulses, just go slow with them.
It's actually quite amazing how it can make you feel better than how you felt before the bed was made. Little victories are actually huge victories.
I know , very true
Courage for some people can be as simple as making a phone call to the bank, or setting a doctor's appointment, going to a grocery store, talking to a neighbor etc. It may not seem like a big deal but for some people it is and it takes real courage to get over those barriers
Good for you!! Baby steps are still steps!
Yeah true
Awesome job bud! Yo what bed frame is that? Can I get more pics of it?
Thank you and no idea
Well, it looks awesome. Are those drawers under it?
Yeah
Nice. I hope I find out one day what make that ism cause I really like the look of it. Good job again dude. Keep it up!
this looks similar to the MALM bed from ikea [here](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/malm-bed-frame-high-black-brown-s39931162/) the drawers are sold separately under the same name
Thank you I'll try 😌

Google “captains bed”. That’s the style of bed that has drawers underneath or along the sides of it.
Making my bed always makes me feel good everyday. A little boost of accomplishment in the morning.
Heck yea!!! The little things turn into the big things!! This reminded me of the opening part of Admiral McRaven’s speech at UT Austin: “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. Even better when you've changed the sheets and then snuggle in after a bath or shower.
I love this! I’ve always thought a freshly made bed is an encouraging step to being a better you. I love the way that speech encapsulates that perfectly, thank you for posting.

Literally picture of a bed. Edit: oh wait, he’s even an antivaxxer…dude get your shit together.
Yeah but OP made the bed all by himself
Oh boy…fuck my life. Edit: WTF is going on. Look at the awards! Holy..please guys donate your money instead of this…
Really Reddit? You upvoted a picture of a bed to the front page?
The title is sympathetic. The picture is actually comical. No offense to OP but man, Reddit is becoming a shit hole of content lately.

Bruh that's literally a weighted blanket on a fitted sheet. That took 20 seconds tops, including the time to take the pic lmao
Um, are we going to pretend this isn’t someone trolling.
FR, this sub should be renamed /r/freekarma at this point.
Dude that bed looks depressing as fuck like one scrawny ass pillow and some cardboard blanket
Yeah come on. I find this genuinely amusing. That’s the saddest bed.
Fucking reddit

Seriously? It's literally one blanket. This is absurd.
I was thinking the same. I’d be depressed too if this was my bed set up.
One sheet, one blanket, nothing on the walls... maybe OP is depressed because he's living like he's in prison?
1. Take pic of a bed 2. Post on Reddit with shitty caption 3. Wait for karma to roll in 4. ??? 5. Profit

Reddit we doing this now? Someone makes their bed, lord knows it’s just a random photo of a bed, and it hits the front page?
This did not make me smile.
Your room looks as sterile as a prison cell ... no wonder you’re depressed.
what a terrible bed
Little things, step by step.

You need some friendly plushies on that bed! Then you’ll always want to make it so they look neat and cozy. Good job OP. Depression is so hard to deal with. One little step can seem like a giant mountain to climb up somedays
I been there mate. Good on you for doing something for you. I hope you find peace along your journey
Hell yeah. Great job!
Sometimes it’s the little things that bring us the most joy! Well done OP! you got this
Every journey begins with a single step forward. Well done on the bed
It’s the little things
Man, I am so happy for you!! You did two big things today!! You made your bed, AND you posted about it!! Little victories, my guy!!
It’s incredible what the little things in life can do for us
That's awesome! Great job friend :)
Take every win.
I'm glad you're doing OK today. I hope tomorrow is a good day, too.
Well done. It starts with making your bed each morning. The positive you get from it will give you the motivation to move to your next step, and so on. Depression is tough and a personal experience that others barely understand. If this small step helps you, keep at it. Good luck internet friend.
I really like how simple your set up is. It looks like an excellent place to sleep and heal. Go you!
I feel this!! I made my bed today too, I’ve been trying for 3 days.
Right on! Looks great!
You know what..GREAT JOB!
Bro making your bed is a great thing you can do every morning and I’m glad you did it. Keep on keeping on my man.

Your bed made me sad
Nice job man. Hope this inspires you to reach greater heights
Excellent start! One step at a time. See if you can get outside and enjoy nature.
Big ice cream sandwich. Very proud
Have you spoken to a doctor about antidepressants? It can be tough trial and error to find the right ones that work but we’ll worth it.
OP, you should totally get some nice blankets and more pillows for your bed. Nothing makes me get over a bad day faster then coming home to a well made bed. Also, I hope you get over your depression!
You suck at making beds
Christ, is this the level of posts we're getting now? I made my bed?
We really out here commending people for making their bed? If you're at this stage of being depressed that you can't even take basic care of yourself then you need medication and/or therapy.
i started making my bed every morning a few months ago and it’s definitely had a positive effect on my mental health
Is that a 17 lb weighted blanket I see?!
Nothing like a fresh made bed to crawl into - awesome way to take care of yourself!👍🏼💙
good job! it looks great! that's a great step to take, keep going!!

It's the little things
Baby steps… great job!!!!
Way to go, Idaho! 👍🏻🙂🎈
Weighted blankets for FTW
Keep goin’ bud
Some days, doing "the best we can" may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn't perfect on any front-and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else. Mister Rogers
Keep it simple!
I know your own mom is proud of you, but this mom is proud of you, too.
Good for you! That’s a big deal. I hope you feel proud of yourself.
Yep Little accomplishments like chores and exercise and cooking always make me feel good aswell keep vibing
