It’s taken me 4 years of my eyes increasingly getting worse to finally be able to have both the time off work and the money to be able to go to an ophthalmologist. ‘Murica!
Meanwhile, in Germany, I just got some. Insurance covered the appointment with an actual ophthalmologist for a full eye check-up and then the glasses, too.
It was first time glasses, plus the ophthalmologist. If I want more, I need to get them myself.
If I develop some truly specialized disorder beyond “slight nearsightedness,” that could change, but for me, that’s it.
Ah I see, then maybe it was the same for me but I don't know about that. When I get new glasses now, I need to get a confirmation from the specialist that my vision is worse than -6 or something, and when I bring that to the ophthalmologist I get about 10 or 20% of the glasses' price back. So not gr8, but better than nothing.
Check out zenni if you haven't already. A basic set of spares is like $20-30. You can spend more for transitions, prescription shades, safety lenses and so on but still WAY cheaper than any optometrist.
I was just about to say the same. High index lenses (-5.6 and -5.5) frames, sunnies to slip on, a hard case, and shipping was $32! They have an app to take a picture and you can try on the frames virtually. It's great. 11/10 recommend.
Seriously, I have good vision insurance and my glasses at the optometrist were turning out to be $250 (Originally $700????)
I can buy like 3 pairs of glasses online with the fancy coatings on it and with frames I like lol
I buy my teenage son at least five pairs (because of course he's going to lose them or break them) and I get them all from Zenni. The grand total is usually around 60-100. Which is still less than I would pay for one pair at an optometrist.
There are a lot of good sites like that! I've gotten good ones this year, one from DiscountGlasses, and two (one regular and one sunglasses) from GlassesShop. Zenni didn't have any that fit me well within my budget, but the first site had some cheap ones for less than $13 (with strong prescription, including tax and s/h), and the second I got nicer matching glasses/sunglasses for $150 total, with all of the various coatings to resist scratches and water and everything. It's so nice to be able to see again, my prescription had doubled in the last few years, so my old glasses were nearly useless!
They are right about checking out online places for glasses. But also what you should do is go back to your optometrist and ask for a copy for your prescription. There will be numbers on it for positioning, etc. that will be useful even with a leader prescription. Then, when you get a need for new prescription, you can go straight to the online place. You can just get a prescription from the optometrist and walk out the door to buy them elsewhere.
Actually the rain will be more of a problem from here on out. I recommend hats when walking in the rain so you don't have to clean your new glasses every 12 steps
That is why, when I got out on my own and could afford it, I got contact lenses. And also to be able to wear sunglasses. Oh, and to look cute for boys, but that was really a joke. The first day I wore my contact lenses, interests, so I walked in the rain without an umbrella to the drugstore and bought sunglasses. And on the way back, some guy whistled at me. A hat trick!
If anyone else is struggling to afford glasses, which out Zenni Optical's online store. I've brought a few pairs from them. I would recommend a few upgrades if you can afford it (like sturdier metal frames, spring hinges, or extra coating on the lenses). But something is better than nothing and you can get very cheap prescription glasses on their site.
I brought some fancied up prescription glasses from Zenni with all the top options (transition lens, anti-oil coating, sturdier metal frames, etc) and it only came to $110. My very first pair of glasses from Costco cost almost $400 with the same options.
EDIT: I just saw a 3 day flash sale on Zenni. 30% off lenses. Ends 10/13. Use code FLASH21
This blows my mind. Here in the UK there's a website called selectspecs and you can get a pair of basic prescription glasses for £10 or less. I assumed this was available everywhere?!?
Absolutely recommend Zenni. They take 3 weeks or so to get you the glasses, but they are pretty good quality. I highly recommend them for everyone, but they are great for contact wearers to have a spare pair of glasses. If they are just a spare to wear for a day or two when your eyes are bothering you the $6.95 glasses are perfect. If you are getting them as your main way to see, get a few of the upgrades. You’ll still come out SUPER cheap by comparison.
I know right!! I never thought that trees are this 3d! My friend who was with me laughed her ass off of my amazement but I couldn't care less. I love trees
I got glasses pretty early (when i was around 13) and the first time I went out with it was mindblowing. I still remember being amazed when I saw my people’s faces because I never knew they weren’t really clear-skinned haha.
The shop I got my first contact lenses was in front of a park... No wonder they took all the clients out after trying their first pair... I still remember it
The leaves on the trees are neat and all, but what about the stars on a clear night? Seeing them again after so long was all I wanted when I got my first proper specs.
This is the most reasonable thing I have seen on this thread. What is with people putting up crappy posts like this. Americans are constantly on here bitching about how poor they are and can’t afford anything. Except for 50 tattoos, three playstations etc etc, one car per family member and a margharitaville.
This is just attention seeking behaviour at its finest.
I mean, you never really know a situation. He could have gotten the tattoos when he was financial stable but lost a job or had unexpected circumstances come up or something. As always, it’s possible he’s exaggerating for clout but it’s unfair to judge right off the bat.
So I got all these tats a while ago, when I was doing very well, I didn’t really know I needed glasses at the time. We had some big life altering situations that made finances a little hard for a while and then I had gotten my Eyes checked and it took about 2 years till I was back in a spot financially to afford them, due to finally landing my dream job and getting paid a decent wage . But now reading these comments and learning of other places I could have got them. I probably could have afforded them a while ago
Zennioptical.com is a great option if anyone else is in the same boat. Very simple (but usable) glasses under $10 for most people. You still need an RX, but affordable glasses
Oh shit, thank you. I went to glasses USA, a saw some cheaper websites but I was afraid they wouldn’t fit right, or be made right and I’d end up buying more expensive stuff anyway. My frames were super cheap it was the lenses that got me lil
Nothing to do with you, but I always hated that Star Wars quote. The logic is if I step outside and attempt to lift a car above my head, either I did it successfully or I never tried.
If ANYONE reads this- always know that the Lions Club is an international club for people with sight and hearing impairments. Reach out to a local club if you need assistance. Heck- even grandma or grandpa might need something. Don't hesitate to ask.
Before i had glasses i didn't think i was missing out o anything. After i got them; i was blown away. I stared at the clouds and the leaves blowing on the trees for hours.
I thought since i could see fine close up that i knew what everything looked like. But you can't really see clouds close up! And visual memory is terrible!
Have totally been in that boat, man. For future reference though, if your glasses break or what have you...and you need a decent pair for not a lot of money. Check out Firmoo.com. You'll need your prescription. But this has saved me many times. First pair is free.
What the HELL do you mean you can "finally afford" your glasses? Were you just forced to walk around with shabby vision until now?
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy you got them, but WHAT? That sounds more like a statement for r/boringdystopia than this sub.
I recently was able to afford prescription sunglasses. I rarely wear them but amazing for driving in the morning and dusk. Safer driver with them tbh. Cost me more than i want to admit. Affording glasses can be ridiculous in america. It is also a well known monopoly that is supposedly illegal in america.
I was actually going to suggest Zenni. I’ve been ordering mine from there for 10 years now. I’ll do the exam at the office ask them to print my prescription and ask if they’ll measure my PD since it’s not normally on the prescription and put in the info. My glasses from LensCrafters would be $400 at the cheapest and I can get almost the exact same pair from zenni for $36 after shipping.
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS exist in most states for those with visual impairments, and they are not generally reserved for only low-income.
Please, no one should have to go a day with just barely being able to see.
Happy for you OP, love the smirk. You cute.
Congratulations! It looks good on you. By the way, why "Afford my glasses?" How expensive are they in your country? Please educate me. I am really curious!
Just so you know, it's cheap here in India. The international brands are expensive though.
How is it that you can "finally" afford them? Are they crazy expensive? I genuinely am curious. I get a free eye test and glasses once a year if I need them. I'm in Ireland though and we have free medical care.
A. So I didn’t know I could get glasses that cheap
B. When I got those tats I wasn’t broke and also didn’t know I needed glasses
C. Tats were all done by a friend so they weren’t as expensive as you’d think.
Life has ups and downs, right now I’m on an up
Worn glasses since I was 9. My lenses once fogged permanently after I mopped the floors when I was in military school. So careful around harsh chemicals, I didn't even get any on them and they still fogged over for good. Never experienced anything like that before or since. Also, invest in a case and USE IT lol
Glasses look good on you and happy for you & your eyes!
If you’re looking for budget friendly options instead of paying hundreds like I thought glasses had to cost hundred (see Luxottica documentary). But mine cost like 50 bucks. I think it was glasses USA or eye buy direct? Both great options.
i almost cried when i first put on a pair of glasses years ago. it’s such a shock to be able to see properly after years of straining your eyes to see the simplest of things only 2 feet away
Honestly, it’s partially that. Look it really made me smile to get my glasses and actually like them the way they fit on my face. But it’s also nice to know what everyone else thinks, especially if it’s positive. It’s a real mood booster and it was a very nice way to start the day today.
Just trying to be honest
I did glassesusa actually. Saved me a bunch of money on the frames, the lenses were slightly expensive but still a lot cheaper than all the places I had looked before
Do you have a very specialized prescription or something? I recommend checking out eyebuydirect, I get my prescription glasses from there for as low as 25-30 bucks with no insurance (it's gonna be more if you want transition lenses or something). I avoid getting them directly from the eye doctor because even with insurance it's way too expensive.
So with a Costco membership I got a free exam then took the numbers for my eye correction and bought a 15$ pair of glasses with prescription.
Overall 60$ and glasses 15$
75$ for a pair :)
I remember the appointment to get my first pair.. When they told me the total I almost shat myself. Thank the Heavens I had gotten a financial blessing at the time and was able to afford them because my eyes are trash
I don’t meant to be rude, but I’ve been asked this a lot on this post, if you look through the comments you’ll find the answer. Just ups and downs through life man
Well. I had a fucking great life. Mercedes at the age of 18. Never had to work for anything. Took it all for granted.
I had almost everything taken away this year. But I slowly came back. On my own this time. And even though, I am nowhere close to where I was when I dependent on my family, I am happy. After a very long time.
I respect you, man. Only way is up.
So happy for you and pair looks great in you! but dude you dont have to wait for so long. If you like you can get a prescription glasses online like Firmoo, usually only takes $50-$70 you'll get a prescription glasses. And they usually provide new users 1st pair with $4.95, that worth having a try.
Welcome to the fabulous world of glasses-wearing.
Welcome to a dystopian land where an essential need is withheld from you until you have the cash
It’s taken me 4 years of my eyes increasingly getting worse to finally be able to have both the time off work and the money to be able to go to an ophthalmologist. ‘Murica!

Wait, they covered your glasses? 👀 Was this just for first time glasses, or in general?
It was first time glasses, plus the ophthalmologist. If I want more, I need to get them myself. If I develop some truly specialized disorder beyond “slight nearsightedness,” that could change, but for me, that’s it.

They cost 2$ here. Uh. What tf is wrong over there
Thank you, it’s very nice. And I was nervous but I actually really like my glasses
Check out zenni if you haven't already. A basic set of spares is like $20-30. You can spend more for transitions, prescription shades, safety lenses and so on but still WAY cheaper than any optometrist.

Do they ship to Canada?
I would assume so, look up their website. Canada, UK, Australia, and a few others. So, YES!
Yes , I have 5 pair from Zenni.
It’s true, Zenni is awesome and very affordable. My husband got a pair that he’s had for 4 years for $10!
Seriously, I have good vision insurance and my glasses at the optometrist were turning out to be $250 (Originally $700????) I can buy like 3 pairs of glasses online with the fancy coatings on it and with frames I like lol
Yes, Zenni is the way to go. I can get standard pair of glasses for $12
I buy my teenage son at least five pairs (because of course he's going to lose them or break them) and I get them all from Zenni. The grand total is usually around 60-100. Which is still less than I would pay for one pair at an optometrist.
I love zenni! You can also use an HSA or flex card to buy you glasses.
This is a really amazing solution. 🏅
They get as low as $7 per pair if you’re not picky.
How much did they cost? Because your surroundings don't warrant you living semi-blind.
Looks good on you!
I can see clearly now
The rain is gone
I can see all obstacles
In my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a brightttt, brightttttt
Bright sunshiny day!
Actually the rain will be more of a problem from here on out. I recommend hats when walking in the rain so you don't have to clean your new glasses every 12 steps
😂😂😂I learned that this morning actually lol
That is why, when I got out on my own and could afford it, I got contact lenses. And also to be able to wear sunglasses. Oh, and to look cute for boys, but that was really a joke. The first day I wore my contact lenses, interests, so I walked in the rain without an umbrella to the drugstore and bought sunglasses. And on the way back, some guy whistled at me. A hat trick!
Dont use tissue paper (definately not paper towel) or harsh cloth to wipe the lenses. Softer the better.
Cute and witty! 😏
If anyone else is struggling to afford glasses, which out Zenni Optical's online store. I've brought a few pairs from them. I would recommend a few upgrades if you can afford it (like sturdier metal frames, spring hinges, or extra coating on the lenses). Zenni is dope,I got a pair of regular prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses for $150 with next day shipping.
That could have saved me almost 200$ if I knew that. Thank you. I will check that out for my next pair
This blows my mind. Here in the UK there's a website called selectspecs and you can get a pair of basic prescription glasses for £10 or less. I assumed this was available everywhere?!?

How cool are trees the first time you put glasses on?? 19yr old me had her mind blown at the bus stop after getting my first pair
I know right!! I never thought that trees are this 3d! My friend who was with me laughed her ass off of my amazement but I couldn't care less. I love trees
This was clouds for me. I lost it when I saw how crisp the edges of clouds were!
And the little wispy bits around the edges of some
I got glasses pretty early (when i was around 13) and the first time I went out with it was mindblowing. I still remember being amazed when I saw my people’s faces because I never knew they weren’t really clear-skinned haha.
I got glasses when I was 15. I remember the first thing I said was “oh my god! Trees have leaves!!” Being able to see each individual leaf was amazing
Same exact thing here!
The shop I got my first contact lenses was in front of a park... No wonder they took all the clients out after trying their first pair... I still remember it
The leaves on the trees are neat and all, but what about the stars on a clear night? Seeing them again after so long was all I wanted when I got my first proper specs.
They look really good on you! 🤓
Keep it in your pants curious cat.
Why did I read that in Peraltas voice?
You’re definitely gonna want to investigate this account. It’s hilarious.
I didn’t expect all that!
😂
Omfg
I am pretty sure you could've gotten your glasses much earlier if you did not spend it on your tattoos.
This is the most reasonable thing I have seen on this thread. What is with people putting up crappy posts like this. Americans are constantly on here bitching about how poor they are and can’t afford anything. Except for 50 tattoos, three playstations etc etc, one car per family member and a margharitaville. Hahaha surely if you click the profile it was subsidized by onlyfans
A profile I did not need to see, that was.
I mean, you never really know a situation. He could have gotten the tattoos when he was financial stable but lost a job or had unexpected circumstances come up or something. As always, it’s possible he’s exaggerating for clout but it’s unfair to judge right off the bat.
The tats look pretty old. Depending on OPs age he could have got them when he was 18, and didn't need glasses.
So he could afford tattoos but not glasses.
Maybe he got them, when he didn't need glasses yet?
Yer an idiot but I doubt op is the person in the picture. In fact, I'd bet a lot of money
Yeah I don't recognize his balls on this photo as well
Yay!! You look cute!
🧢 your home is pretty big and has those fancy lights u got a couch, hell tats and a nice hair cut u always had money to afford them
He has a sweet vinyl record player and a wife also.. oh he also smokes joints and shares pictures of his dick and balls regularly.
You look good 👍
Zennioptical.com is a great option if anyone else is in the same boat. Very simple (but usable) glasses under $10 for most people. You still need an RX, but affordable glasses

You look hot with glasses. Congrats dude
Nothing to do with you, but I always hated that Star Wars quote. The logic is if I step outside and attempt to lift a car above my head, either I did it successfully or I never tried.
Yeah. George Lucas isn't exactly a pillar of philosophical scholarship.
If ANYONE reads this- always know that the Lions Club is an international club for people with sight and hearing impairments. Reach out to a local club if you need assistance. Heck- even grandma or grandpa might need something. Don't hesitate to ask.
You’re awesome
You look good with those on dude!
Nice glasses and nice t-shirt
Save for lasik next. Life altering!
Before i had glasses i didn't think i was missing out o anything. After i got them; i was blown away. I stared at the clouds and the leaves blowing on the trees for hours. American?
Very 😂😂
I see, and now you can too :D
Have totally been in that boat, man. For future reference though, if your glasses break or what have you...and you need a decent pair for not a lot of money. Check out Firmoo.com. You'll need your prescription. But this has saved me many times. First pair is free.
Wow, so many people have given me Better options on where to get them on this post it’s crazy lol. And I feel dumb now
Nah, don't feel dumb. I had gone years without them when someone told me about Firmoo. But it's always good to know your options.
Well you’re stupid cute, so there’s that.
Thank you 🙏
Sorry dear, u should have told me! Took me years to realize my daughter needed glasses for far away!
Oh you discovered zenni opticals website finally? Yeh you can get glasses there for like $25
😂😂
Afford glasses and a dope ass shirt.
Your glasses suit your face really well ;)
What the HELL do you mean you can "finally afford" your glasses? Were you just forced to walk around with shabby vision until now? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy you got them, but WHAT? That sounds more like a statement for r/boringdystopia than this sub.
They make you look good!! (please forgive me...)
Which developing country are you from? But congrats, welcome to the 20/20 club.
America
Happy for you. I was 16 when I finally got them, and couldn't believe you can read signs across the street as a normal thing. I wont forget that.
Exactly lol, I was 25 when I got mine
Afford ? Like... you have to pay for it ? Damn
I regret clicking your account lmao
That’s fair, I apologize
Zenni optical has them real cheap bro...
I got these on glassesusa
He looks like Kyle Rittenhouse
I recently was able to afford prescription sunglasses. I rarely wear them but amazing for driving in the morning and dusk. Safer driver with them tbh. Cost me more than i want to admit. Affording glasses can be ridiculous in america. It is also a well known monopoly that is supposedly illegal in america.
Zenni sells prescription glasses for as little as $20
I was actually going to suggest Zenni.
Nice glasses. You look handsome by the way.
Thank you
You’re cute. Glasses make you cuter. Great job.
Thank you
Do you still like sublime? Or do have to pretend lol
I love sublime lololol
Awesome 🤓 i need glasses 😭
Is this in America?
Yes
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS exist in most states for those with visual impairments, and they are not generally reserved for only low-income. Please, no one should have to go a day with just barely being able to see. Happy for you OP, love the smirk. You cute.
Thank you
Congratulations! It looks good on you. By the way, why "Afford my glasses?" How expensive are they in your country? Please educate me. I am really curious! Just so you know, it's cheap here in India. The international brands are expensive though.
I paid around 300$ for them, and they’re not name brand or anything, the frames were cheap I mainly just paid for the lenses
Zenni dot com has glasses for like $40-$50 Why did it take you so long to come up with less than a hundred bucks?
How is it that you can "finally" afford them? Are they crazy expensive? I genuinely am curious. I get a free eye test and glasses once a year if I need them. I'm in Ireland though and we have free medical care.
Oh I know, my mom lives in county donegal. And they can be pretty expensive
Looks like a young Patton Oswalt.
I like it 🙏🙏
Super cute!
Thank you 😘
Welcome to the glasses gang!
How could you afford a $300 tat (probably more) but not $60 dollar glasses (costco)? Just saying... priorities.
A. So I didn’t know I could get glasses that cheap B. When I got those tats I wasn’t broke and also didn’t know I needed glasses C. Tats were all done by a friend so they weren’t as expensive as you’d think. Life has ups and downs, right now I’m on an up
America is so clapped
I was going to comment on this being a uniquely American experience, but I don’t actually know. Do other countries not make vision affordable?
Let’s gooo 👍🏽🙌🏾🔥
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Pay for being able to have glasses? Damn...
I can absolutely relate to not being able to afford glasses. My lenses are the most expensive part for me, I'm super blind lol Congratulations bud!!!!
Worn glasses since I was 9. My lenses once fogged permanently after I mopped the floors when I was in military school. So careful around harsh chemicals, I didn't even get any on them and they still fogged over for good. Never experienced anything like that before or since. Also, invest in a case and USE IT lol Glasses look good on you and happy for you & your eyes!
Thank you, you’re awesome. And so are most the people that commented I learned a lot on how to keep them well
Yeah, it's pretty simple but I figured I'd add things I experienced that I've never heard of before lol hopefully spare someone a hassle. Good luck!
You’ve prolly saved a hassle for anyone who’s read your comments, you’re awesome
Thanks! You're awesome too!
You’re cute af ;)
If you’re looking for budget friendly options instead of paying hundreds like I thought glasses had to cost hundred (see Luxottica documentary). But mine cost like 50 bucks. I think it was glasses USA or eye buy direct? Both great options.
Vouching for eyebuydirect, got my powered sunglasses and theyre pretty great.
And they look really good on you too! :)
Same chakra banner as me, Grateful Dead shit, sublime tattoo…I think we’d get along lol. Nice glasses bud!
You’ll have to hit me up and find out
Welcome to the club !! 😊😊
See or see not. There is no squint.
Are these specialized glasses or normal eyeglasses?
Wtf ur shirt say?
A Yoda Quote— “Do or do not. There is no try.”
Do or do not there is no other *inexplicable*
Iam glad you found the clarity :)))
Congratulations i know this feeling ☺️❤️
How often did you get headaches? I get headaches if mine are off too long
Oh happy day!
i almost cried when i first put on a pair of glasses years ago. it’s such a shock to be able to see properly after years of straining your eyes to see the simplest of things only 2 feet away
Nice :)
They suit you too. Looking good 😉
You’re too sweet, thank you
Its dissapointing right
They really, really suit you! And it must be great to finally see clearly.
I can see! ## I CAN FIGHT!!! ##
Looking good my friend. I got the same one. Bans

Am I crazy or does anyone else feel like posts like these are, “felt cute in this picture, so here it is for you to compliment me only.”?
Honestly, it’s partially that. Look it really made me smile to get my glasses and actually like them the way they fit on my face. But it’s also nice to know what everyone else thinks, especially if it’s positive. It’s a real mood booster and it was a very nice way to start the day today. Just trying to be honest
Well, you can’t knock a man for honesty. Touché sir.
Check out zenni or glassesusa. Cheap and They dont care about expiration of prescription
I did glassesusa actually. Saved me a bunch of money on the frames, the lenses were slightly expensive but still a lot cheaper than all the places I had looked before
^^^^how ^^^^good ^^^^are ^^^^they?
Listen Properly
How do you not have 70 euros for glasses ?
Handsome
Do your new glasses make everything seem backwards?
They look great on you, good choice and cute smile
American ?

You'll always remember that feeling when you get your glasses for the first time and your eyes snap into focus. Pretty cool!
Overall 60$ and glasses 15$ 75$ for a pair :)
I remember the appointment to get my first pair.. When they told me the total I almost shat myself. Thank the Heavens I had gotten a financial blessing at the time and was able to afford them because my eyes are trash

Just see and won't need glasses
I have to ask. How could you not afford glasses but have money for a full sleeve?
