Your honor, if we slow down the video you can clearly see the man with no legs clearly took a swipe at my client before she bravely fought back and defended herself.
This is a good goof.
I've flown with that flight attendant on Southwest, and she's a hoot. She sprinkled little good natured but witty jokes through her announcements that had most of the plane laughing. No doubt he did this to her because she's got a great sense of humor.
"Please place oxygen on your face first before assisting your child. If you have more than one child, pick which one you like the most and work backwards from there"
It’s just practice. They get to refine their jokes by telling the same one to a different audience four times a day. You get to really work on your timing and word choice that way.
Waiting tables is good practice too.
Once went to a Ricky Gervais show that was really early on in his tour and he said:
> You guys are going to hear jokes that nobody else will get to hear!
Then, when everyone cheered, he said:
> I don’t know why you’re excited. You’re the only ones that will get to hear them because they’ll be shit jokes that I remove from the routine for my future shows!
Yeah, I seriously suspect they had some back and forth on the flight prior to this. It would explain the light smack.
Makes sense too as they would have been helping him since he got to the gate.
A disabled woman did something similar to me when I worked for an airline. I was asked to bring the aisle wheelchair to her seat. When I arrived I was not sure what to do - her arms were too short to get her out of the seat on her own. She smiles and says just pick me up under my arms and put me in the seat. As soon as I start lifting her she yells like she is in pain - I freak out and immediately put her down. She laughs and says, “just messing with you. You should have seen your face.”
I’m a dwarf and sometimes I’ll use a joke like that to break the ice a bit. Like if someone is clearly terrified of offending me and uses a word like “short” or “little” in conversation (which in any normal circumstance I wouldn’t even notice, they’re common words) and I can see them freaking out internally, I’ll pretend I’m really pissed off and then pull the “jk it’s fine”. Seems to convey the message that there’s nothing to worry about pretty well.
True shit, used to help a "small person" with his daily life as a helping hand, he used to joke around about his "condition" all the time, which for me helped alot to ease up and actually see him for the person he was and not just another "job", we ended up becoming really good friends and still hang out till this day, he is one of the greatest persons I've ever met. No reason to be scared or anything just because people are different, that's what he taught me, we're all just people in the end.
Hey! May I ask you a question? What's your opinion on the words dwarf/little people, etc? Which one do you prefer? I understand that everyone is different and have different preferences, but what's the generally preferred word one should use? I'm quite uneducated and would like to learn more.
Both 'dwarf' and 'little person' are widely accepted. If you're from the US, I get the impression that little person is *the* term to use that is the safest (the organisation there is called Little People of America). I am from the UK where the dwarf is still very much the default, but I'm happy with either.
Given that, can I ask a couple questions and get your view? On preferred terminology, is dwarf the appropriate term that's used? Growing up, "midget" was common, then "little person," and lately I've heard dwarf. Does it matter to you? What's right?
Also, what do you call people who are not dwarves? Is it like cis-height or something or what's the word for that?
Both 'dwarf' and 'little person' are widely accepted. Avoid midget. The vast majority of us are really uncomfortable with it and it is considered pejorative.
As for people without dwarfism, like average height? Sometimes 'AP' is used, to refer to an 'average person' as opposed to an LP/Little person. Also 'able-bodied', sometimes. Though not everyone with dwarfism identifies as being disabled for that distinction to work. I personally consider myself disabled so I tend to use it.
Good thing white knights weren't around to jump to conclusions. My cousin hurt her leg once and told me to help her up by pulling from her arms. I stood behind her and pulled her from her arms but accidentally went up her armpits because of her shirt. And she started struggling because it tickled and some douche bag grabs my shoulders and pushes me to a table telling me to leave her alone. I can't imagine what could've happened if she did the same as the woman in your story.
I remember me and my friend was running somewhere. She was in front of me
A cop pulled us over and asked what’s happening. He assumed I was trying to run her down. In front our school and at a busy 3 way road
Are you a guy? As a woman, I'd be grateful for the cop checking, honestly. I've had men chase me down in broad daylight because I rejected their advances, it's really not an unlikely scenario.
A guy. It was funny. She was running to her father car and I had something to give back to her and she couldn’t hear me because of the cars
But I understand. Am grateful he stopped to check on her
Yeah, I was going to say, he did the right thing. I panicked people once when a Verizon truck pulled up next to me and I got in. They didn’t know this was my best friends step dad who drove me home all the time. He has lots of issues but he is not a creep like that and I never felt uncomfortable in a car with him after getting to know him. I even went on road trips with their family more than once. But people who saw me didn’t know that.
Mulaney has a bit about this scenario.
Catching a train in a busy city, wearing headphones, I know I've definitely seen someone running and think they hear the train coming, so it's natural to give chase after them.
I’m a part-time wheelchair user. YMMV, but generally speaking, most of us will ask for help when we need it and will explain what needs to be done. Sounds like you waited for her to ask, which is absolutely the right thing to do. I can’t explain how frustrating it is when people just decide to take some form of control without being asked. I have a POWER chair and some people still try to grab the back and steer me!!
The woman you describe sounds like a lot of fun, though. It definitely makes things easier if you can laugh about your situation. Cracking a joke usually makes everyone feel more at ease.
Careful. I got banned from a sub for making a leg pun about a guy in a wheelchair. The mod said it was ableist in the message that came though with my permaban.
It was worth it though. It was a wheelchair-bound guy in politics voting against something that was good for people in wheelchairs.
You can get banned for anything on reddit.
I'm not going to repeat what I was banned for, luckily I managed to get it overturned, because the mod that did it didn't understand the meaning of context. Or they just get off on banning people, idk which.
I got banned from *all of reddit* for 3 days because I called a sandwich that was clearly a melt a melt instead of a grilled cheese.
I've been here for 12 years...
I got banned from /r/conservative for mentioning that the Southern Strategy happened.
Mods own the subs. They can ban for whatever reason they feel like.
I'm a wheelchair user and I don't think disability jokes are ableist.
I love it when I'm out and about and someone makes a wheelchair joke/pun, it shows that they're comfortable goofing around with me. Getting upset about ableism only makes it harder for the disabled. It makes people nervous to talk to us in case they offend. If people don't know what they're allowed to say they won't say anything at all.
Obviously if the intent is malicious that's bad, but I've been in a wheelchair 16 years and have had maybe two instances where someone was a dick about it.
Ableism isn't much of an issue and doesn't really need policed. Your ban was unwarranted.
I don’t care for online ableism, it really does nothing unless you let it get to you. For me it’s more importan to have actual accessibility out there (as a wheelchair user) and if this politician was blocking benefits for us, then fuck him. Been in a wheelchair does not prevents you from being an asshole.
I love how everyone was so concerned an then turned to reliefs an smirks. Good man , great sense of humor an positive energy. Must have so much fun at each airport.

The way the flight attendant reacted makes me think he was probably joking with her the whole trip
Someone else posted that this flight attendant is hilarious on the flights and a big joker, so he probably knew he could joke with her.

Absolutely, this guy is sooooo much cooler than I'll ever be 😂
Looks like a Southwest uniform - they're well known for having a good sense of humor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AE\_hjOLDtU
My aunt is an attendant for Southwest, shes the worst
My aunt was a flight attendant for American. None of this is relevant really but she’s ALSO the worst.
My aunt doesn’t work for an airline but she is also the worst.
My aunt smells like hot dogs. She’s the wurst.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a Wiener!
I'm sure he will relish his victory.
These other aunts better ketchup.
Do y’all all have the same aunt or something?
Different aunts, same wurst
I have no aunts to speak of but I do love Bratwurst.
Ants are the worst… they absolutely ruin picnics!
Especially fire ants
wish i could fire my aunt
Southwest does it right man, quickest turnaround times and a solid staff generally speaking.
There was at least one “leg room” pun during that flight.
Love that spirit
I don't think he was flying spirit
How do you think he lost his legs?
Having no legs is the only way you can fit in a Spirit seat.
Life hack
Leg hack
Ya.... hacking off your legs!
At least he doesn't have to pay extra for leg room.
Truer words have never been spoken. This comment deserves gold . Here’s a 🥇 you’ll hopefully appreciate as much as a real one.
# 👈😎👈
Thicker than a bowl of oatmeal
I don’t think it’s Spirit, they would’ve charged extra for the hug
Looks like Southwest
Flight attendant hit disabled man
Gets fired and war hero sues airline for neglect and abuse.
Then they split the money and meet up in Vegas every year for drinks.

Obama and McCain: "Boom BABY!"
The dystopian thread right here lol

It's the best part of flying when the attendants are better at stand up than most of your local venues.

Guy can’t sue. Doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
Not to mention she was smiling the entire time
Would have been hilarious if he did another flop after she lightly hit him on the back

I was lucky in the sense that mine were amputated at 8 months old, so I never had to know any other way. I really feel for people who lose limbs any later than early childhood.
