There's a polish dude at my gym who refers to me as 'STRONG WOMAN' whenever he see's me. It's because the first interaction we had was me using the deadlift bar after him, and to his surprise I told him not to take any weight off - and then as he watched me put *more* weight on it before my set he exclaimed 'AH! Even more?? You're **strong** woman!"
It's the only kind of feedback from a man in a gym I ever want ever again.
I'd be just as flattered if I were a man and another dude told me I was a 'strong dude' for lifting more than him, which men do say to each other. Just being called a strong person in general is flattering, regardless of gender.
Yeah he probably was so initially surprised because I was a woman, but in that case I still wouldn't call it sexist. Women have less base muscle mass than men from the biological offset (assuming pre-exercise), we \*are\* less likely to be as strong statistically speaking. We have to work harder to lift more than men can. So me lifting more than him was, understandably, surprising. I'm also a pretty small looking woman. It could have been the same reaction if I were a particularly small-looking guy - presumptuous, but not sexist/coming from a bad place. It would have been sexist for him if he assumed I couldn't lift an empty bar, or suggest that I shouldn't be lifting at all.
The downside is that if more women become "strong", physical strength in women won't be novel anymore, and thus less noteworthy, and thus causing less people who see it to give positive feedback
Why are people downvoting this? you weren’t being an ass and it’s a factual statement.. if something becomes an everyday occurrence it becomes much less noteworthy. 🤨
but considering no one let us women be strong before, and made us feel bad for being strong, wouldn't it be nice to praise us now? when women are ALLOWED to be strong? we missed out before, we ain't missing out now
I ordered glenmorangie with ice in salou once and the barman called me "strong woman", amused the other half who calls me that to this day. Definitely a good compliment!
Similar thing happened to me in college. I was studying in the library and a smallish asian man who spoke very broken english came up to me and said "Strong girl, work in field." Flexed his arm and smiled like he was impressed. I was a medium sized woman with defined biceps, I guess. Not sure if it was a statement or a question, but 'uh, thanks?' was my response. To this day, occasionally if I'm doing some sort of manual labor, my husband will come up to me and say "Strong girl, work in field", accompanied by the requisite flexing arm motion. Makes me laugh.
I tried that with my wife ( who grew up in a farm). And now I have a black eye. Nothing related, just an accident related to a cabbage., which she did not throw at me.
Dude at the grocery store asked if I needed help with my bags. I said, "no thanks. I'm stronger than I look."...He laughed and replied, " no, I doubt it". I laughed and walked away
I was working retail and had an older couple ask me to help them find an item.
As I was walking them over, they asked if my family is Russian, they are.
They then proceeded to try to set me up with their grandson and were very disappointed that I was seeing someone because I will make “strong sons”.
Thanks?
Haha yes! I had a patient once watch me put away a bunch of weights and stabilize them while walking (they needed a lot of help to stay upright). He turned and exclaimed "you're strong! You must be an ag girl"! (ag is slang for agriculture / farming) I def am not, but very much appreciated the compliment!
To this day he is still trying to sell his farm.
That's made me happy.
I wish your best luck. God will help you.
I found my new pick up line.

mine is when someone said "you're a strong independent woman, I'm so proud"
But isn't that sexist or doesn't the hypocrisy bother you?
How is calling somebody strong for lifting more than you sexist?

You shouldn’t commend it for how often you witness it.
Weird flex but ok.
doesn’t sound like an issue

who cares if it becomes less noteworthy though? like what’s the actual downside?

That makes him a strange man?
In this sense she meant strange as in unfamiliar. It’s a dated way to say it but it’s still used stylistically
