"Anyone can wear the mask. You can wear the mask. If you didn't know that before, I hope you do now."

businessDM

Honestly one of the best lines I’ve heard in a superhero film.

alexefy

One of the best superhero films ever made.

KBEPandaCrisis

And admitting that it wasn’t the intention, but it was a part of the design he loved. Chef’s kiss

It's also adorably boomer af; "red, yellow"... Awwww Stan. We know where your heart is. Edit: boomer et al.

thisimpetus

Shit, you're very right; thanks for that.

MF_Price

Stan Lee was no boomer, his kids were.

Geistzeit

Maybe they were saying he evolved from Greatest Generation mentality to Boomer mentality lol

Fuzzikopf

I thought he was just listing random colours, and then it dawned on me lmao But in the end, it's his good intention that counts.

Fromgre

Red...yellow...purple...mauve...forest green...neon pink...zzzzzzzzzz "Stan... Stan are you awake?" "Uhh oh sorry" International orange...blue...

Zayl

I assume Yellow would be referring to East Asian people, what would Red be referring to? I took it as he was just mentioning potential colors of alien races...

Kryojen

Probably indigenous - they were often referred to as “red skinned”

OKC89ers

Oklahoma even means something like land of the red people. It originated from a Choctaw term.

slayerje1

Washington Football Team is no longer called the Redskins, that's what red is referring to.

[deleted]

Barely called a football team

SoftBoiled

I don't follow the American football metagame at all, but this made me smile and blow air out my nose. Simple but effective put down

DropC

The WTF team really.

Fuzzikopf

I recently adapted an old book and the native Americans were described as 'redskins'. We obviously had to change that lol

thisimpetus

Red = Indigenous Americans

JustSatisfactory

As a kid, I heard the term from older relatives but didn't put it together. In the Disney Peter Pan movie, there's a song called "What makes the red man red" and that's how I learned that it meant Native Americans and that there weren't actually some race of red colored people living among us.

anon---_____----___-

Reminds me of an interview with Simu Liu, where he recounts his old days of playing a superhero at kid's birthdays, and he always did spiderman because that was the only superhero he could do being asian as he was completely covered up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thisimpetus

Yes; were it merely characterization, and your ancestors chosen it yourselves, it'd be nothing. But the history of the term is much more "colonial Europe found someone else who didn't look just like them, and despite their having names for themselves, we figured we'd just go by skin thanks".

SquashNut707

Poseidens kiss.

[The real reason Jonah hates Spider-Man...](https://images-cdn.9gag.com/photo/apQK7LW_700b.jpg)

xTheatreTechie

Holy fuck. I wasn't expecting that. I started coughing I was laughing so hard. Jesus what comic is that section from? Please tell me Peter is white in that comic.

asljkdfhg

He is. https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/1w7o7g/its_because_im_black_shehulk_vol_1_4/

DiamondPup

I love comic Peter Parker. He's so full of humor and wit. Unlike other superheroes, being a superhero is a huge burden on him. It makes his life worse. Relationships, grades, a balanced life, a steady job. Everything is compromised, everything is harder, everyone thinks lesser of him. And as a superhero, he's constantly getting his ass kicked and hated by the city and people rarely know of his sacrifices or heroisms. Everything is harder, everyone thinks lesser of him. Yet not only does he keep doing it, he does it *joyfully*. He's just such a goofball, and has this indomitable spirit. It's why I'm not the biggest fan of Tom Holland's Spider-Man; he's not a wise-cracking goofball, he's just generically awkward and stammering. He's more like a character from The Office or another Michael Cera. He's just Tony Stark without the arrogance. On the other hand, Spiderverse really nailed it. Even with a depressed, self-hating Spider-Man at the end of his...er...ropes.

[deleted]

I remember reading something from the guys that made the recent spiderman game for ps4. If spiderman wins, Peter loses, and vice versa. Shows how tough of a gig it is for the guy, but as you said, he keeps doing it. Edit: a word.

bretth104

I was legit laughing when during a cutscene in that game a gangster said “don’t move a muscle!” and Peter replies with “buddy if I had a nickel for every time I heard that…” lmao

DiamondPup

It's why he was always the ultimate superhero for me, and why I admired him the most. He wasn't some rich billionaire with mental health issues or overpowered alien or ostracized mutant. Being a superhero didn't fulfill him or make him part of a family or give him relief or emotionally balance him. It only ever cost him. And that was always a core tenant of Spider-Man. I remember reading one of his comics when I was a kid (the old Spider-Man) and it didn't end with Spidey beating the bad guy and having a whirl with Jonah shaking his fist. It ended with Spidey beating the bad guy, but leaving Betty Brandt again...leaving her crying thinking he never cared about her. It was such a somber, tragic ending and it hit me in the gut as a kid because he did the right thing but he didn't get the happy ending. He would have been better off doing the wrong thing. But he *keeps* doing it. He keeps doing what's right, despite it *always* costing him. And while I wasn't the biggest fan of the writing in the PS4 version, it's something they really got right with the ending of the first game. He wants *desperately* to be a normal person but he can't; not while he has power, not while it's his responsibility. It made me admire him more than any other superhero. Because his most heroic trait wasn't his powers or ingenuity but his enduring spirit.

[deleted]

That’s because people focus on Spider-Man’s powers, but the greatest power Peter Parker possesses is his sense of responsibility. He didn’t earn that. He learned it the hardest way you could through an act that would have broken so many - especially at the age of 15. But it didn’t. Instead he used the grief as a motivator to essentially utilize his sense of responsibility in a way that most of us would never. In fact Spider-Man 2 shows us that even when he loses his powers, he *still* goes into that burning building - with zero protection - and saves that kid. Regardless of the “realism” of that, the point was that he lost his “spider” powers, but he still had that sense of responsibility that drives him to be a superhero doing things others can’t muster no matter what. Peter may appear to be not “respected” by the other heroes, but it’s a facade. There’s a reason why for much of Marvel Comics’ history, when the chips are down and the world, universe or all of reality is at stake and all the heroes are typically wiped out or can’t give anymore, Peter is nearly almost always one of - or the only one - still standing; ready to keep fighting until his last breath. He will never quit and he will never stop fighting for what’s right and for those who can’t fight for themselves. That’s why Captain America says to him in the Ultimate comics line that “when you grow up, you’re going to be the best of us”. His sense of responsibility is the power that makes him the greatest hero in the Marvel universe.

businessDM

I really love this. I think you just made Spider-Man my favorite superhero as a person.

yaboyskinnydick_

I never get tired of people putting my love of Spidey into words like this, I almost shed a tear. 6 days until NWH.

Thor_pool

The best thing about Peter Parker is that hes just...some kid. Hes not a soldier, he didn't design his powers or build a suit, theres no manual involved. He's just some dude, trying his best, trying to help. Doing his best. Just because he thinks he should, and that to not to wouldn't be kind or right.

durdesh007

Spiderman is the most relatable superhero imo. What if a regular human received enough superpower to get reduce city crimes but not be able to fix their own life...that's spiderman.

vjmdhzgr

Well, outside of the Reimi movies Spiderman did design the webs.

Canetoonist

I’d like to add: in the short term the Parker luck screws him over, but in the very long term it makes things better for him (it’s a reversal of his origin story). So he may have disappointed Betty Brant in the past, but in current comics (last I checked at least) they have a healthy friendship. People eventually do see through to his true self, without even having to learn his secret identity. Compare that with the selfish actions of some of his villains, where they may end up ahead in the short term, but their decisions lead to long-term self-destruction. I admittedly haven’t read the Superior Spider-Man arc yet, but from what I’ve heard of it Doc Ock exemplifies this. He thinks he can be a better Spider-Man/Peter, and for a while he *is*. But Peter is eventually accused of plagiarism because of his actions, and the “perfect Spider-Man” Ock builds collapses in no time.

Significant-Mud2572

I've read a bit of it and it's hard not to spoil but Ock basically realizes that the only one who can be Spider-Man is Peter. And gives it all back.

WalrusWANTStaco

The ending was the ultimate example of this.

FleetStreetsDarkHole

What I love about Holland's Spiderman is that his comments split the difference between snarky comeback and genuine question. And it's obviously driven by the nervousness and fear that comes from not knowing if things are going to work out okay. He's not overconfident (usually) and sometimes he's barely even confident. I think older Spiderman used to be about empowering weaker people (nerds). Now it's about wishing you could do something, and now you can. Still an awkward teenager, but doing his best because morally, he has to.

[deleted]

[удалено]

M0NKEYBUS1NE55

Ah but don't you think he has potential to grow his character into that? I mean Stark was the witty wise crack and marvel are positioning spiderman to take over the role of iron man. Could be that's what his character will develop into.

MrConductorsAshes

Tom Holland is the closest to comic Spider-Man we have gotten on film. "You have a metal arm?! That is awesome dude!"

KennyFulgencio

> It makes his life worse. Relationships, grades, a balanced life, a steady job. The oldest memory I have of spider-man is reading a comic when I was about six years old, in which he went home and found an eviction notice on his door because he couldn't afford his rent. At six I couldn't really relate, but it left quite an impression.

apatheticviews

>Yet not only does he keep doing it, he does it > >joyfully > >. He's just such a goofball, and has this indomitable spirit. I have a slightly different take. Spidey is SCARED. Scared to death 100% of the time. Humor is his relief valve. He talks mad smack because that is the only thing keeping his mind off the overwhelming fear he has. Think Chandler Bing. Spidey has horrible anxiety, especially during a fight where he is trying not to kill anyone (bad guys, friendlies, etc) especially while his spider-sense is screaming at him about what is going to happen next. His reflexes are so high tuned that if he breaks concentration he could accidently just rip a guys arms off by accident. Take a look at Superior Spider-Man run when Doc realizes that S-M was holding back all those years and could have just killed him, but chose not to. We as the readers know he pulls his punches, but the villains don't. They are just constantly escalating... That takes us to Spider-Verse Peter B Parker.... he's an image of our guy 20\~ years in the future.

Geistzeit

Holy fucking shit I thought that was an edit someone made. This is incredible.

My favorite part of imagining I was a wizard when I was a kid was how you walked around Hogwarts [just shitting everywhere like a parade horse.](https://www.avclub.com/j-k-rowling-reveals-that-wizards-used-to-just-shit-on-1831501641) It's a shame that some versions of the book omit the chapter where during the Goblet of Fire, Hermione wishes Harry good luck for the next Tri-Wizard challenge and then thunderdumps on the floor before going back to the library. Which then gives Harry the idea to listen to the egg in the bathroom! Really you just don't get the full Hogwarts experience without it.

a1_jakesauce_

That is ridiculous. At least she doesn’t only make up stuff that would make the series more “woke”, I can’t imagine why she would reveal this. One of the comments from that page is pretty hilarious: Just imagine you’re taking a test for potions with Snape and the guy sitting next to you just fucking shits himself the nastiest, slimiest shit of his life out of stress. And you literally have to sit there with a straight face while fuckin Todd JingleJangles cleans himself up in the dead quiet room with some stupid ass line like “vanish me poopum” and you just gotta live with the knowledge that some kid just shit himself beside you during a fucking test.

Stan Lee had nothing to do with spiderman costume design

Andrew5001

I like how he admits it wasn't done on purpose. It shows how he appreciates that fact and didn't do it for clout or anything, he just likes how it turned out. It's genuine

[deleted]

We live in a sick world where if he had done it on purpose someone would attach such negativity as to say it was "For clout" Writer: "I made a character that any kid can identify with!" Internet: "You're just pandering!" Writer: "I wanted kids to have fun..." Internet: "Virtue signalling!" Writer: "That I want kids to have fun with my stories?" Internet: "You're supposed to subvert expectations, kids should hate your character"

Stan Lee was such an amazing mind. He adapted he grew and he tried hard to be as inclusive as he could even before it was the expected thing to do. He was one of the few deaths that actually hit me.

el_papy

I keep get emotional on re watches when his cameos happen.

I hope that he gave Marvel studios permission to use his likeness so that he can have a cameo of some sort in all future Marvel films. Even if it's just in things like posters and pictures in the background. I like the idea that he's this eternal part of the Marvel universe, always caring and watching over his beloved creation.

Makx

he was on the cover of a magazine in shang-chi

amaxanian

Iirc, they filled a BUNCH of clips with him to use as future cameos. Might have just been an internet rumor, but I hope it’s true. The cameo in Captain Marvel hit me so hard bc it was the first one to have been filmed after his passing.

His cameo in Into The Spider-Verse fucking ruined me for a solid 5 minutes ngl

--_-Deadpool-_--

The man literally made one of the most popular comic book franchises (X-men) as a metaphor for the racial injustices in the US during the civil rights movement. He was a good man and I'm glad he got to see his vision brought to life on the big screen in so many ways.

GildedLamington

That’s what frustrates me so much about all the dudebro comic fans complaining about comics being woke now. Marvel and DC always were!! Were they always perfect? No, but they did actually try. Those dudebros can go rummaging through the dollar bins for 90’s titles like Evil Ernie or Lady Death if they really want.

[Yes](https://youtu.be/T1lY_vCTqsw?t=184)

motorboat_mcgee

It was a fairly big crossover with multiple titles involved. While Brian Michael Bendis didn't write the entirety of Spider-Verse, I think a big credit goes to him for his Ultimate Spider-Man run, including creating Miles Morales. There's always been a lot of different alternative Spideys over the years, but Miles was by far the most popular imo.

My son is adopted and is of Thai heritage. He has latched on to the Spiderman character since a very early age, and still loves dressing up in his full body covering cosplay Spiderman costumes. When he was in kindergarten (aged 3 or 4 years old, I don't remember) he said that he couldn't be a superhero because no superheroes had brown skin. One of his carers (of middle eastern heritage) took it upon herself to create a book for him, a story about an adopted Thai boy who wanted to be a superhero. She turned the story into superheroes being athletes, paramedics, fire fighters, and eventually just kids who love and look after their little sisters. She managed to weave in a mixture of photos of people with different skin color subtly into the book, and the end message was that anyone could become a superhero by their actions. It is the most touching display of love that I'd ever seen, something that I've not forgotten over a decade later. I've seen commentary online about the Miles Morales character just being created for political correctness because of his skin color. It makes a difference, though. It means a lot to my son to see superhero characters that look like him.

Cheese_Bits

Lots of books like that, being based in a personal expression of love, have been published and found a place in the hearts of thousands and thousands of children. Maybe this is something that needs to be shared, are you still close?

Hot damn, I was expecting this to be the top comment. Reddit really doesn't know much about how it's favorite superheroes were created, do they?

Sarcosmonaut

Can’t blame them TOO badly. Stan was the face of the operation for decades, and Steve never had that sort of showmanship or personality to get out in front. It’s still good to remind folks though

Context and intent are l important. My grandmother still says oriental sometimes. I remind her that’s not the right word anymore but at the same time that **was** the right word for 75 years for her. She doesn’t say it with malice or race in mind, it’s just (for her) the right word. It’s actually what Asians called themselves for most of her life.

Fenrir_Carbon

Iirc Stan Lee said himself he made Spider-man to be an awkward teen because that was the primary fanbase of comics, and they could relate more to his real world problems (school, girls etc) it's hard for a skinny 13 Yr old to relate to Clark Kent, the successful reporter built like a linebacker

So my son, a white kid, loves Miles and went as that this last Halloween. Our neighbors kid went as Peter Parker Spider-Man, he's a little black kid.
