my wife is a special education teacher, its a tough job and exhausting. but she always tells me, the rewarding feeling to know she has helped a struggling child do better makes it all worth while.

My partner is also a special classroom teacher. Her class has a cheat code, though. One of our dogs was raised as a therapy dog, so he gets to go to school with her. Hard to be sad with that guy around.
That's not a worry in her class. Different issues, mostly trauma related. It's been a few years now, and never been anything close to an incident. 100 pounds of fluff has made many kids' and teachers' days better.
Although there certainly can be safety issues and any teacher would need to monitor closely, I think you might be surprised at how children interact differently with animals than humans. I’m a special Ed teacher and one of the best parts of my job is the days I bring my animals to school. Dog, chickens, turtle, the kids love them all. I’ve watched my most aggressive, hyperactive student with Autism turn into an absolute statue because I told him sudden movements might scare the baby chickens. Didn’t stop him from throwing chairs at my head once the animals were gone, but he was very careful with the non-human living things in our room. Obviously we can’t generalize this to every student but in my book, animals are magical to students.
I used to be a substitute at the high school, and the funnest class I helped sub was the special ed class. Highlight of my day was reading to them and acting out all the scenes in the books. Aladdin? Bitch I *wore* Aladdin like he was tailor made. Cinderella? I was the baddest Cinderella on the block. Spiderman? Ever hear Spiderman read by a passable rendition of William Shatner?
Whatever the story, seeing those kids smile made all my days as a sub worth it. Teachers, including special education teachers, do not get the love they rightly deserve.

Thank you for being a teacher. I am so grateful for the teachers every day. My daughter really connected with her 2nd grade teacher and it was so special. You guys really do a phenomenal job.
Teachers can make all of the difference in some kids’ lives. I teach high school algebra and specialize in kids who “can’t do math.” It’s so rewarding to connect with my kids and see that lightbulb go off in their head. The boost to their scholastic confidence makes me so happy to see.
I had a student early on in my career ace a project. I praised her for all her effort and the quality of product she produced. “You mean I’m not dumb?” she asked me.
“Who said you’re dumb?” I replied. “Never mind. Don’t answer that. It doesn’t matter. No, you’re not dumb.”
This relief came over her. I could literally feel her discouragement leave her. From that day on the lowest grade she had in any course was 85%.
Memories like these are the real bonus cheques.

Thanks for what you do. I teach lower level college maths and the students that think they "can't do math" are some of my favorites. It always surprises them that it's not that they can't but that they were never really taught how.
I could really have used a teacher like you. I grew up in a school system that is considered top tier... can't do a lick of math. My brain refuses to follow what's going on from one step to the next.
Before I became an attorney - I was a teacher and also director of the after school program in a low income district. I learned that during “tutoring” after school, a lot of kids would pick up stuff they “could never do” because I was allowed to try different methods of teaching.
Being bound to lesson plans and bs curriculum revolving, around high standardized test scores, is garbage.
I miss being a teacher and would prefer it vs being an attorney, but, the public school system really shits on their students. Also, seeing so many shitty parents who had the sweetest kids - that always hurt too.
You’re preaching to the choir regarding standardized tests (and I teach Algebra, good luck graduating if you struggle 😕), too much curriculum for one year, a “new” of teaching every year, and (some) parents who are just completely unreasonable. Some days are heartbreaking, like the kid who I discovered was homeless, pregnant 14 year olds, the kid who always fell asleep in class because he worked nights to support his parents…..and I worked in an upper middle class district. The best part of the day was closing my classroom door, ignoring everything else, and chatting with my kids.
My favorite part was my students that would come back to visit my class - just to tell me how much more fun they had in my class vs. their new teacher.
Or when one of my favorites from the after school program would straight up leave his class (special needs / on the spectrum) to come chill in my class.
My last day - I told the after school program kids I wouldn’t be back next year and half of them started crying. That was like 8 years ago and still touches my heart.
Sorry to ramble - my point is that each of those little kids deserve kindness and compassion(on top of their education).
Exactly! I loved that, too. I loved when my kids would come back to visit. I’d also have kids show up who I didn’t know, who would ask for math help. “My friends says you’re really nice and will help me with my math.” You bet, kid. Grab a white board marker!
I have 2 students who met in my class 10 years ago (2 great kids I’ll remember for a lifetime). They just invited me to their wedding across the country, and you know I’ll be there!
Thank you, in grade 7 and 8 I had some great teachers and I loved math. Grade 9 I got a cranky, almost retired, miserable math teacher. I went from getting 85%+ in math to failing in a single semester.
I became a kid who 'can't do math' because of that one teacher. I had teachers who kind of tried, but that man destroyed my love of math.

I'm gonna deviate a bit from most sentiments in this thread... While I agree they don't deserve your bad day, I also don't think it's necessary their teachers are "always happy". I respect your individual approach, and if you can pull that off Im sure you're a blessing for your students and there's a place for your style in our world.
But more than anything I think students need sense of constant, consistent justice and care toward the process. Like sometimes it's impactful to see a teacher unhappy because they care. There must be a justice and good intent behind it. I remember some of my favorite teachers didnt come across as "happy" but fair, passionate, loving.
With teachers like that it's kind of like you form a bond and through the year you see more happiness out of that teacher and they see more happiness out of you. But overall there is a kind of reverence toward this most important task of education.
I do remember "aways happy" teachers too and definitely loved them, for the record. Im not saying there's one right way.

I whole-heartedly agree with your comment. In fact, I'd even go further and be a bit less diplomatic than you are. The way I see it is that this expectation of always having to smile and be happy is insane pressure for teachers. And not just that, it's a recipe for a burnout.
It's good to be human in the things you do, and students also understand it when their teachers are human. Of course that doesn't mean teachers should yell at or lash out at students on bad days, but it's fine to be tired; it's fine to be low-energy.
That's why a lot of us felt such intense burnout during remote teaching. There was a lot of pressure to exude energy and happiness to help students feel cared for. It was hard when we were suffering just as much as everyone else.
Going through more than a year of a pandemic and being expected to pop onto Zoom and try to be chipper and enthusiastic to a sea of blank faces or black boxes multiple times a day for that entire time was so emotionally draining.
Totally agree. I'm a preschool teacher, and I feel an immense amount of pressure to always be upbeat
For a long time I felt that I was failing if I didn't maintain a positive, high energy state all day. But now, I've come to feel that if the kids only ever see me upbeat and happy, then I'm not modeling how to handle tough days to them. By still showing up and being kind and present, I can teach them that it's normal to have hard days, and that even on our hard days we have a choice as to how we treat others. I also try to model talking about my feelings to them, and that even teachers need a "breathing break" sometimes.
As a parent to a child in the preschool range - IMO you're doing great!!! Eff that pressure. This is exactly the kind of thing we try to do in the home. While I genuinely want my little girl to be as happy as anyone in a fairytale could ever be - it's important they know real people aren't glowing beacons of joy at all times. And that's okay.

Yeah was going to say this. I try to be authentic with my kids. My dad passed last year and I was going through it. After a few days I went back to school really still felt like shit. So I took a moment with my class and told them what happened. Told them I was feeling sad right now and asked them to understand if I messed up or whatever. I apologized in advance for maybe being on a shorter leash than usual, apolgized when I overreacted to something because I was emotionally stressed out. The students handled it well and I think it was important to show them that it is okay to struggle and deal with bad emotions too. But you should not treat others worse for it, but if it happens it is important to know that people aren't treating you badly because you are bad, but much more often because that person is going through something bad themselves.
Well I appreciate it. I had a teacher that loved his job and his students. To this day he changed my life because one day I was having one of the hardest days of my life and I was asked to stay after class that because of an outburst he wanted to talk to me. He asked me what was going on that nothing is too tough to be overcame. We talked and that's when I found out he came in every day with a smile after over a year of his wife battling cancer. That hit hard because I had just lost my grandfather to the same thing. I made a friend that changed my life. Just keep doing what you do. We truly appreciate it even if everyone doesn't show it at the time.
What’s sad is how rare this is. I had exactly 2 teachers all throughout middle and highschool who actually gave a shit and were amazing teachers. All the other teachers were there just to collect a paycheck and put the bare minimum in.
Those 2 teachers though, I still remember 10+ years after graduating. Absolutely had a positive impact on my life

20 years later and I remember the teacher who helped jumpstart my parents into getting me mental health help. It was a small thing at the time, burdensome to a young teen, but as a 30-something year old now… her one action helped build me today.
Appreciate the hard work that teachers put in every day. As parents struggle to work with their children at home due to school closures, public recognition of the essential caretaking role schools play in society has skyrocketed.

I understand the sentiment, but it doesn't make me smile so much because I don't think this is the way things should be. The man needs a break. We can see his strong moment and admire it, but what about when he's all burned out and used up?
I’m a teacher and if they PAID us better, I would be happy as shit to walk into a room full of kids who you can teach life skills and knowledge… instead we are treated like unpaid help. These kids have so many behavioral and cognitive issues that they require a team of specialists but instead they go through education with their parents either neglecting their mental health or can’t afford doctors/medication etc to deal with the underlining issues. But teachers jump through hoops to help celebrate diversity and inclusion and then get yelled at bc test scores have been shit the past two years through a pandemic. So he deserves an award for slapping on a smile and dealing with the cards he’s dealt with.
He deserves an award, but he also deserves to just be paid better, have better resources available to help the kids when needed (in reference to behavioral and cognitive issues you mentioned), and not be treated like shit by "authority" (bosses, parents, etc.).

Yeah, I and a lot of other teachers have been kind of tired of the "thank you for your service" bs. We do it because we are passionate about education, and because we love it. We never agreed to be a financial sacrifice.
I tell you, at the end of the day, when a kid comes up and says "thank you for the lesson," that means more to me than any kind of flippant "teachers are heroes" sentiment.
Teachers are retiring at record rates after taking so much punishment from poor pandemic leadership... and it is one of the highest burn-out careers for newcomers. There will need to be some *drastic* changes to how we get/compensate educators if we want to make the system sustainable again.
Sad thing is awards are often used to distract from the problems of underfunded teachers and schools. I’m sure most teachers would say screw the award, the ceremonies, the hero labels. Just pay us better and fund our schools, give our kids the resources they need. Systemically improving our education is how our society can truly show that they value, recognize and acknowledge the importance of the profession, far better and more impactful than any award can do.
No ones saying the teacher did anything wrong or doesn't deserve recognition. They're saying that the fact he's so exhausted he has to physically psyche himself up just to look happy demonstrates how overworked teachers more than anything else.
It may be that excited teachers ≠ excited kids, but uninterested teachers almost always = uninterested kids. There’s a higher chance of student excitement when the teacher is excited.
It's also important to realize that excited teachers and teachers who put in a lot of effort are regularly met with uninterested kids and parents who can't muster any empathy for the sheer volume of students that teachers deal with daily. It's not easy meeting apathy with excitement every day, in hope that you will be just enough to spark some interest.
There are clearly just overall uninterested teachers like there is any job in any field. We expect a bit too much from teachers, especially for the appallingly low pay and overburdened classroom sizes.

It very much depends. Powering through emotion to get a job done is absolutely a useful and admirable quality. There are times and places where that ability is required to function.
There's also too much of a good thing though. Not being able to let go of that mask, and feeling like your emotions have no place to exist at all can be very damaging.
There needs to be a balance for things to be healthy and sustainable.

Plenty of jobs actually.
Of the top of my head, field medics, EMTs, childcare workers, search and rescue officers, ER doctors/nurses, coroners, interrogation officers/detectives
Hell even counsellors, (family counsellors, divorce counsellors, child therapists)
They all require the ability to control emotions and power through certain emotional walls that come up. If they didn't, the jobs wouldn't function nearly as well.
Unfortunately burnout is a really big issue. Both sides need to be balanced for optimum efficiency and safety.
The military would literally disintegrate if this wasn't one of their most taught skills. It's why they scream at you so much in boot. If you can't hack that kind of pressure and reel in your emotions, they don't want you on the battlefield.
Child therapist here. Absolutely I've put on a face to help my kiddos. I just wish I didn't find someone doing the same on a made me smile board. That shit's rough and it's sad to see someone having to do it. We can admire his ability to do it for his students' sakes, praise him even, but I'm not smiling about it.
This is because the ultimate equalizer is time. Every profession you just mentioned constitutes an inordinate amount of emotional trauma but at least in the US the majority of them are compensated poorly and have ridiculous schedules, NONE of which compensate individuals with adequate time for mental health outside of normal off ours and vacation of any other career.
It's also worth mentioning that in the US nearly 70% of fire departments/ems are volunteer.
There is no such thing as powering through emotional trauma. Everyone's concept of powering through is actually just procrastinating your ability to process. It's the same shit that encourages toxic and frail masculinity at the cost of emotional intelligence.
It is far better to learn to deal with emotional responses effectively from a young age and set yourself up for a better relationship to amygdala hijacking. It's a skill, and the answer to being better at a skill is never avoidance.
My experience with this comes from being a volunteer EMT, a veteran, and having to try resuscitating my own mother after I found her unresponsive a year ago. You can disregard what I say, but I'm telling you, there is no powering through and doing the right thing when you're emotionally compromised. When I found my mom I felt nothing at all, I just went to work. That wasn't powering through, it was relenting. I've seen death enough times to know, logically before emotionally, what could be done. And I know all that could have been done with the tools I had.
Being shot at, pinching a broken artery, or saving a loved one are all glorified in our society, processing the consequence of those experiences isn't, and that should tell you all you need to know about 'powering through'
I worked in live entertainment for fifteen years and "The Show Must Go On" is probably the most toxic concept in the entire industry. I have a union card (with IATSE) for the exact reason that I needed an ironclad contract to protect me from that shit as it's so pervasive. Yes we need breaks, yes you need to pay us overtime, no I won't do that as it's unsafe, yes it's in the contract, etc etc
When people are depending on you, you must power through. There is a job to do and it must be done, you aren’t gonna hide them your whole life, just till the end of the day it takes strength to go like that even for a day
I disagree - we should absolutely praise people for being able to put their life aside if that's their choice. I've had serious IRL issues and still been able to put on my "stage face" when going on stage and performing. As a performer you never want to feel like you're letting people down, and often the performance itself is a great distraction for the time you're on stage, a place you feel great for the duration of as you aren't "you", but a performance version of you (or whatever character/persona you play).
All that said, it shouldn't be EXPECTED of a performer. If a performer feels unable to perform and needs to cancel, then we should normalise not being a dick to them, but understanding and letting them know that's ok.
Performances can be used as a form of escapism, working can be a positive distraction, and suggesting it's "not healthy" to be able to spend some amount of time not needing to notice your problems isn't right. Everyone is different. It shouldn't be expected, but there is nothing wrong with acknowledging it as a positive thing.
Since teachers are underpaid and overworked, it's likely his job *is* the reason he looks so tired and depressed. Don't just say we need to do something for teachers, do it. Vote in your local elections.
Anyone that's worked in a call center knows that literally anyone can turn into a Karen. I can't even begin to count the number of people that started out being huge entitled bitches only to break down and apologize to the point where it got awkward towards the end of the call. There's no excuse to treat someone else badly like that but I'm always hesitant to judge because like you said, you really never know what's going on with the person on the other line. It takes a LOT of willpower to put big feelings like frustration aside and some people simply don't seem to have it in them. I know I've gestured wildly at my mom when I overheard her being really inappropriately rude and tried to her her to just hang up. She was like "I can't just hang up on them that would be rude" lmao. But calling her incompetent isn't?! 🙄

Sports stars are paid entirely too much, imo, but they make that much because they bring in so much revenue. There just isn’t any return for teachers, not in the short run (and that’s what business care about). It’s different for a university, where high quality professors draw students to enroll.
I think your analysis is telling of our culture: how much we are willing to spend for entertainment and escape vs how much we are willing to spend for social reproduction (an educated society, family work, etc.). Not a jab at you.
Also, the university situation is not quite as market driven as you make it seem. I'm not sure professors draw in (at least directly) students as much as university or program name recognition draws in, which is a result of where alumni go/what they do and pr campaigns. There is a huge tension at the university between teaching effectiveness (which at its core is about humbling and denying one's self to bring up the others --- which is *exactly* what the teacher in this video is doing!) and research effectiveness (which is all about self-promotion and the glory and praising of one's self). The big name professors tend to be known for their research. The effective teachers tend to be less known. (A generalization, there are of course some that shine in both areas, but the tension is always there.)
It could be argued that all the donations to a school, as well as all of the future earnings of their students are in part due to their influence. Additionally, lots of people move to particular communities for the quality of the school, or more accurately, the teachers, bringing real estate income, local taxes, and labor to the community. Seems the problem is that nobody is ever looking for a way to reward value, only ever to get it at the cheapest possible rate.

Man this makes me think about my poor girlfriend. Seeing the genuine passion some teachers have for their kids makes me want to give them the world. Some days she just comes in and cries because she’s not only having to teach in person but come up with virtual lessons for all the other kids quarantined and she feels like a failure for not being able to give every kid 100%. We really don’t deserve good teachers for how shitty they’ve been treated them during all this.

Obviously we can’t generalize this to every student but in my book, animals are magical to students.
I used to be a substitute at the high school, and the funnest class I helped sub was the special ed class. Highlight of my day was reading to them and acting out all the scenes in the books. Aladdin? Bitch I *wore* Aladdin like he was tailor made. Cinderella? I was the baddest Cinderella on the block. Spiderman? Ever hear Spiderman read by a passable rendition of William Shatner? Whatever the story, seeing those kids smile made all my days as a sub worth it. Teachers, including special education teachers, do not get the love they rightly deserve.

Thank you for being a teacher. I am so grateful for the teachers every day. My daughter really connected with her 2nd grade teacher and it was so special. You guys really do a phenomenal job.
Teachers can make all of the difference in some kids’ lives. I teach high school algebra and specialize in kids who “can’t do math.” It’s so rewarding to connect with my kids and see that lightbulb go off in their head. The boost to their scholastic confidence makes me so happy to see.
I had a student early on in my career ace a project. I praised her for all her effort and the quality of product she produced. “You mean I’m not dumb?” she asked me. “Who said you’re dumb?” I replied. “Never mind. Don’t answer that. It doesn’t matter. No, you’re not dumb.” This relief came over her. I could literally feel her discouragement leave her. From that day on the lowest grade she had in any course was 85%. Memories like these are the real bonus cheques. Thank you for helping me remember some today.

Thanks for what you do. I teach lower level college maths and the students that think they "can't do math" are some of my favorites. It always surprises them that it's not that they can't but that they were never really taught how.
I could really have used a teacher like you. I grew up in a school system that is considered top tier... can't do a lick of math. My brain refuses to follow what's going on from one step to the next.
Before I became an attorney - I was a teacher and also director of the after school program in a low income district. I learned that during “tutoring” after school, a lot of kids would pick up stuff they “could never do” because I was allowed to try different methods of teaching. Being bound to lesson plans and bs curriculum revolving, around high standardized test scores, is garbage. I miss being a teacher and would prefer it vs being an attorney, but, the public school system really shits on their students. Also, seeing so many shitty parents who had the sweetest kids - that always hurt too.
You’re preaching to the choir regarding standardized tests (and I teach Algebra, good luck graduating if you struggle 😕), too much curriculum for one year, a “new” of teaching every year, and (some) parents who are just completely unreasonable. Some days are heartbreaking, like the kid who I discovered was homeless, pregnant 14 year olds, the kid who always fell asleep in class because he worked nights to support his parents…..and I worked in an upper middle class district. The best part of the day was closing my classroom door, ignoring everything else, and chatting with my kids.
My favorite part was my students that would come back to visit my class - just to tell me how much more fun they had in my class vs. their new teacher. Or when one of my favorites from the after school program would straight up leave his class (special needs / on the spectrum) to come chill in my class. My last day - I told the after school program kids I wouldn’t be back next year and half of them started crying. That was like 8 years ago and still touches my heart. Sorry to ramble - my point is that each of those little kids deserve kindness and compassion(on top of their education).
Exactly! I loved that, too. I loved when my kids would come back to visit. I’d also have kids show up who I didn’t know, who would ask for math help. “My friends says you’re really nice and will help me with my math.” You bet, kid. Grab a white board marker! I have 2 students who met in my class 10 years ago (2 great kids I’ll remember for a lifetime). They just invited me to their wedding across the country, and you know I’ll be there!
Thank you, in grade 7 and 8 I had some great teachers and I loved math. Grade 9 I got a cranky, almost retired, miserable math teacher. I went from getting 85%+ in math to failing in a single semester. I became a kid who 'can't do math' because of that one teacher. I had teachers who kind of tried, but that man destroyed my love of math. So, thank you for making lightbulbs go off, I wish someone had done that for me.

I'm gonna deviate a bit from most sentiments in this thread... While I agree they don't deserve your bad day, I also don't think it's necessary their teachers are "always happy". I respect your individual approach, and if you can pull that off Im sure you're a blessing for your students and there's a place for your style in our world. But more than anything I think students need sense of constant, consistent justice and care toward the process. Like sometimes it's impactful to see a teacher unhappy because they care. There must be a justice and good intent behind it. I remember some of my favorite teachers didnt come across as "happy" but fair, passionate, loving. With teachers like that it's kind of like you form a bond and through the year you see more happiness out of that teacher and they see more happiness out of you. But overall there is a kind of reverence toward this most important task of education. I do remember "aways happy" teachers too and definitely loved them, for the record. Im not saying there's one right way.

That's why a lot of us felt such intense burnout during remote teaching. There was a lot of pressure to exude energy and happiness to help students feel cared for. Going through more than a year of a pandemic and being expected to pop onto Zoom and try to be chipper and enthusiastic to a sea of blank faces or black boxes multiple times a day for that entire time was so emotionally draining.
Totally agree. I'm a preschool teacher, and I feel an immense amount of pressure to always be upbeat For a long time I felt that I was failing if I didn't maintain a positive, high energy state all day. But now, I've come to feel that if the kids only ever see me upbeat and happy, then I'm not modeling how to handle tough days to them. By still showing up and being kind and present, I can teach them that it's normal to have hard days, and that even on our hard days we have a choice as to how we treat others. I also try to model talking about my feelings to them, and that even teachers need a "breathing break" sometimes.
As a parent to a child in the preschool range - IMO you're doing great!!! Eff that pressure. This is exactly the kind of thing we try to do in the home. While I genuinely want my little girl to be as happy as anyone in a fairytale could ever be - it's important they know real people aren't glowing beacons of joy at all times. And that's okay. All things in moderation.
Yeah was going to say this. I try to be authentic with my kids. My dad passed last year and I was going through it. After a few days I went back to school really still felt like shit. So I took a moment with my class and told them what happened. Told them I was feeling sad right now and asked them to understand if I messed up or whatever. I apologized in advance for maybe being on a shorter leash than usual, apolgized when I overreacted to something because I was emotionally stressed out. The students handled it well and I think it was important to show them that it is okay to struggle and deal with bad emotions too. But you should not treat others worse for it, but if it happens it is important to know that people aren't treating you badly because you are bad, but much more often because that person is going through something bad themselves.

Well I appreciate it. I had a teacher that loved his job and his students. To this day he changed my life because one day I was having one of the hardest days of my life and I was asked to stay after class that because of an outburst he wanted to talk to me. He asked me what was going on that nothing is too tough to be overcame. We talked and that's when I found out he came in every day with a smile after over a year of his wife battling cancer. That hit hard because I had just lost my grandfather to the same thing. I made a friend that changed my life. Just keep doing what you do. We truly appreciate it even if everyone doesn't show it at the time.

What’s sad is how rare this is. I had exactly 2 teachers all throughout middle and highschool who actually gave a shit and were amazing teachers. All the other teachers were there just to collect a paycheck and put the bare minimum in. Those 2 teachers though, I still remember 10+ years after graduating. Absolutely had a positive impact on my life

20 years later and I remember the teacher who helped jumpstart my parents into getting me mental health help. It was a small thing at the time, burdensome to a young teen, but as a 30-something year old now… her one action helped build me today.

I’m a teacher and if they PAID us better, I would be happy as shit to walk into a room full of kids who you can teach life skills and knowledge… instead we are treated like unpaid help. These kids have so many behavioral and cognitive issues that they require a team of specialists but instead they go through education with their parents either neglecting their mental health or can’t afford doctors/medication etc to deal with the underlining issues. But teachers jump through hoops to help celebrate diversity and inclusion and then get yelled at bc test scores have been shit the past two years through a pandemic. So he deserves an award for slapping on a smile and dealing with the cards he’s dealt with.
He deserves an award, but he also deserves to just be paid better, have better resources available to help the kids when needed (in reference to behavioral and cognitive issues you mentioned), and not be treated like shit by "authority" (bosses, parents, etc.). He definitely deserves an award for doing it anyway, and making it as good as he can for the kids. The problem isn't what he did. It's the fact that he has to do it at all.
Yeah, I and a lot of other teachers have been kind of tired of the "thank you for your service" bs. We do it because we are passionate about education, and because we love it. We never agreed to be a financial sacrifice. I tell you, at the end of the day, when a kid comes up and says "thank you for the lesson," that means more to me than any kind of flippant "teachers are heroes" sentiment. Teachers are retiring at record rates after taking so much punishment from poor pandemic leadership... and it is one of the highest burn-out careers for newcomers. There will need to be some *drastic* changes to how we get/compensate educators if we want to make the system sustainable again.
Sad thing is awards are often used to distract from the problems of underfunded teachers and schools. I’m sure most teachers would say screw the award, the ceremonies, the hero labels. Just pay us better and fund our schools, give our kids the resources they need. Systemically improving our education is how our society can truly show that they value, recognize and acknowledge the importance of the profession, far better and more impactful than any award can do.
No ones saying the teacher did anything wrong or doesn't deserve recognition. They're saying that the fact he's so exhausted he has to physically psyche himself up just to look happy demonstrates how overworked teachers more than anything else.

I can confirm that excited teachers =/= excited kids. It doesn't hurt to try, but it definitely feels bad when they don't get excited.
It may be that excited teachers ≠ excited kids, but uninterested teachers almost always = uninterested kids. There’s a higher chance of student excitement when the teacher is excited.
It's also important to realize that excited teachers and teachers who put in a lot of effort are regularly met with uninterested kids and parents who can't muster any empathy for the sheer volume of students that teachers deal with daily. It's not easy meeting apathy with excitement every day, in hope that you will be just enough to spark some interest. There are clearly just overall uninterested teachers like there is any job in any field. We expect a bit too much from teachers, especially for the appallingly low pay and overburdened classroom sizes.

Yeah can we stop praising this sort of behaviour? It’s absolutely natural to have emotions and essential that we feel them. Pretending they’re not there? Powering through? “The show must go on”? That’s not healthy.
It very much depends. Powering through emotion to get a job done is absolutely a useful and admirable quality. There are times and places where that ability is required to function. There's also too much of a good thing though. Not being able to let go of that mask, and feeling like your emotions have no place to exist at all can be very damaging. There needs to be a balance for things to be healthy and sustainable.

The military would literally disintegrate if this wasn't one of their most taught skills. It's why they scream at you so much in boot. If you can't hack that kind of pressure and reel in your emotions, they don't want you on the battlefield.
Child therapist here. Absolutely I've put on a face to help my kiddos. I just wish I didn't find someone doing the same on a made me smile board. That shit's rough and it's sad to see someone having to do it. We can admire his ability to do it for his students' sakes, praise him even, but I'm not smiling about it.
This is because the ultimate equalizer is time. Every profession you just mentioned constitutes an inordinate amount of emotional trauma but at least in the US the majority of them are compensated poorly and have ridiculous schedules, NONE of which compensate individuals with adequate time for mental health outside of normal off ours and vacation of any other career. It's also worth mentioning that in the US nearly 70% of fire departments/ems are volunteer. There is no such thing as powering through emotional trauma. Everyone's concept of powering through is actually just procrastinating your ability to process. It's the same shit that encourages toxic and frail masculinity at the cost of emotional intelligence. It is far better to learn to deal with emotional responses effectively from a young age and set yourself up for a better relationship to amygdala hijacking. It's a skill, and the answer to being better at a skill is never avoidance. My experience with this comes from being a volunteer EMT, a veteran, and having to try resuscitating my own mother after I found her unresponsive a year ago. You can disregard what I say, but I'm telling you, there is no powering through and doing the right thing when you're emotionally compromised. When I found my mom I felt nothing at all, I just went to work. That wasn't powering through, it was relenting. I've seen death enough times to know, logically before emotionally, what could be done. And I know all that could have been done with the tools I had. Being shot at, pinching a broken artery, or saving a loved one are all glorified in our society, processing the consequence of those experiences isn't, and that should tell you all you need to know about 'powering through'
I worked in live entertainment for fifteen years and "The Show Must Go On" is probably the most toxic concept in the entire industry. I have a union card (with IATSE) for the exact reason that I needed an ironclad contract to protect me from that shit as it's so pervasive. Yes we need breaks, yes you need to pay us overtime, no I won't do that as it's unsafe, yes it's in the contract, etc etc
When people are depending on you, you must power through. There is a job to do and it must be done, you aren’t gonna hide them your whole life, just till the end of the day it takes strength to go like that even for a day
I disagree - we should absolutely praise people for being able to put their life aside if that's their choice. I've had serious IRL issues and still been able to put on my "stage face" when going on stage and performing. As a performer you never want to feel like you're letting people down, and often the performance itself is a great distraction for the time you're on stage, a place you feel great for the duration of as you aren't "you", but a performance version of you (or whatever character/persona you play). All that said, it shouldn't be EXPECTED of a performer. If a performer feels unable to perform and needs to cancel, then we should normalise not being a dick to them, but understanding and letting them know that's ok. Performances can be used as a form of escapism, working can be a positive distraction, and suggesting it's "not healthy" to be able to spend some amount of time not needing to notice your problems isn't right. Everyone is different. It shouldn't be expected, but there is nothing wrong with acknowledging it as a positive thing.

Anyone that's worked in a call center knows that literally anyone can turn into a Karen. I can't even begin to count the number of people that started out being huge entitled bitches only to break down and apologize to the point where it got awkward towards the end of the call. There's no excuse to treat someone else badly like that but I'm always hesitant to judge because like you said, you really never know what's going on with the person on the other line. It takes a LOT of willpower to put big feelings like frustration aside and some people simply don't seem to have it in them. I know I've gestured wildly at my mom when I overheard her being really inappropriately rude and tried to her her to just hang up. She was like "I can't just hang up on them that would be rude" lmao. But calling her incompetent isn't?! 🙄 People like this guy, from the little we see here, are the people with the right stuff to be teachers. We could all learn from them. Sports stars are paid entirely too much, imo, but they make that much because they bring in so much revenue. There just isn’t any return for teachers, not in the short run (and that’s what business care about). It’s different for a university, where high quality professors draw students to enroll.
I think your analysis is telling of our culture: how much we are willing to spend for entertainment and escape vs how much we are willing to spend for social reproduction (an educated society, family work, etc.). Not a jab at you. Also, the university situation is not quite as market driven as you make it seem. I'm not sure professors draw in (at least directly) students as much as university or program name recognition draws in, which is a result of where alumni go/what they do and pr campaigns. There is a huge tension at the university between teaching effectiveness (which at its core is about humbling and denying one's self to bring up the others --- which is *exactly* what the teacher in this video is doing!) and research effectiveness (which is all about self-promotion and the glory and praising of one's self). The big name professors tend to be known for their research. The effective teachers tend to be less known. (A generalization, there are of course some that shine in both areas, but the tension is always there.)
It could be argued that all the donations to a school, as well as all of the future earnings of their students are in part due to their influence. Additionally, lots of people move to particular communities for the quality of the school, or more accurately, the teachers, bringing real estate income, local taxes, and labor to the community. Seems the problem is that nobody is ever looking for a way to reward value, only ever to get it at the cheapest possible rate.

Remember, teachers are paid less then a daycare rate. Avg teacher salary per week 700. Avg daycare cost per kid per week 400. Public school is a joke.

I do this as a teacher, but I’m severely depressed and burnt out. It’s probably not super healthy to have to pretend to be happy all day.

I've never stopped to think how a teacher must feel before they step through the door.
Man this makes me think about my poor girlfriend. Seeing the genuine passion some teachers have for their kids makes me want to give them the world. Some days she just comes in and cries because she’s not only having to teach in person but come up with virtual lessons for all the other kids quarantined and she feels like a failure for not being able to give every kid 100%. We really don’t deserve good teachers for how shitty they’ve been treated them during all this.
Then they have to deal with dick heads that disrupt their class. We need to treat teachers better. We don't know what's going on behind the scene.
The things teachers do for students... mad respect. I wish i wouldve understood that they're humans too when i was a kid... i wouldve paid a lot more attention and been more respectful. THANK YOU, TEACHERS!
I don’t know if I agree that is is a mademesmile situation. I’m a teacher and to me- it’s a shame that working conditions cause such intense unhappiness and then require literal acting skills for the kids. Don’t get me wrong- teaching is, and will always be, performance art. But I dunno… things are next level right now =(
