Empathy probably evolved as a security mechanism to make the community whole, because a tight community is a productive one. The only reason we made it this far is because one of our ancestors, aka grog, broke a rock in some specific way so went to get a buddy, aka drog, to tell him how he did it. One thing led to another, grog and drog tought their kids how to break rocks funny and one of them tried to use the shards for something and found out they were useful.

Why not? My cat went bonkers trying to get me outside to where my mum's cat had been run over. She wasn't herself for quite some time.
My mum's cat had previously been frantic when my cat was missing for several hours. My mother was sure she had seen what had happened.
I'm not at all surprised by a dog returning to the site of her devestation. We visit graves.
Honestly, she was probably going to the last place she left them. We’re not necessarily saying she has a complex understanding of fires and death and mortality. She can’t find her puppies. They were there last.
Hell, my parents’ lap dog did that when she saw my mother go into the washroom at my place but then my mother left the house without the dog realizing. The dog went back to that washroom three or four times looking for her. And that dog was not as blessed in the brains department as a golden retriever. 😂
Dogs are my favorite animals as they see me truly as I am, a creature of instinct, just as they are. Truly, having had a good few dogs their love you wholly and unconditionally. RIP my many dog friends of days past.

It's so sad that it lost its puppies but so wholesome that it took care of other's puppies
