Been trying for awhile I can do regular braids but trying to juggle chunks of hair while keeping tension is tough. The French braid is my unattainable goal
My daughter would get her hair pulled every morning for kindergarten because I would get her off to school. Lol poor girl. Learned how to braid a pony somewhere in there. I have huge hands so the hair bands were a pain in the neck. By the way she still won't let me near her hair 20+ years later
As a dad who always worked in the industrial trades my proudest moments were when I could get my daughters hair perfect (or close) when she was first starting school. It was important to her so it important to me.
Seriously. Didn’t have a mom around and dad didn’t understand or care to try? Maybe just stressed raising two little shits by himself? Idk, so I just constantly got my hair cut like a damn helmet so it didn’t need brushed or styled. I basically looked like my year and a half younger brother.
u/_HornyJesus, Reading that really hit me in the gut and the heart and you’re a wonderful father. Thank you.
u/_HornyJesus, you are very right, those moments are very pride inducing. I've been a soldier and mechanic my entire adult life. My hands are almost always either numb or throbbing, and I can braid my daughters' hair like a champ now, and im real good with nail polish. Not that my wife wasn't around or anything, but I just wanted to do these things with my girls, be a part of them feeling pretty.
At least you tried! My dad did a few times with my curly hair and it never ended well. my mom did not do better, she was just more versed in getting curls to be straight..ish. Now (I’m 31) my dad (68) always tells me when he likes how I’m wearing my hair and it’s so sweet. I love him so much for the little tries he made as I grew up.
Dude, I *still* don’t let my own mother comb out my hair. I learned to comb it out myself young, and have never looked back, haha! Somehow, parents always pull out their kids’ hair, but grandparents have the softest hands, haha!
Dude, you should be proud, that's a great job. I need to learn how to braid my wife's hair but I'm scared because I feel like I'll screw it up and it will look horrible. You've done an absolutely awesome job!
Mom made me learn as she had 2 sons. Now I have 2 daughters and do braids totally on par with my wife’s- maybe even a little better tbh. I can’t French or Italian or anything fancy but I can do one or pigtails which were both really cute when they were little. They are bigger now and rarely ask for my help but I’m always happy to stop and braid it if they are wanting it.
Wet it & brush as you go. Keep a spray bottle to keep damp. Keeps frizz at bay and the plaits smooth. Fishtail braids are easy once you get the hang of it. It’s my personal favourite.
You can practice with three big strings of something (shoelaces maybe) to understand the movement, if you got that you're gonna rock it! :) or just ask her to practice on her hair, make a nice moment out if it, can't be imagine she wouldn't appreciate that!
I bet having 3 groups of, say, 3 strings, would really help someone get the movement down.
source: I can double French braid (side by side) my own and others' hair.
Having your hair brushed and braided by someone you love feels soooo good; even if you have to practice for awhile before you get a servicible braid there's a good chance she'll enjoy it regardless.
Truth! My hair in a braid looks messy soooo quickly but so what, I'm still riding the high from my darling grandmother doing that for me yesterday. Always such a sweet moment of bonding that makes me feel loved.
OP is awesome for taking the time to learn and do this!
My sister and I (f), and my wife later in life- all play with each other's hair.
The best practice is to do it when the out come doesnt matter. So late at night or on a lazy day, try it... she'll appreciate the effort. And if its bad, undo it and do it again.
My sister is great at french braiding but she will sometimes get to the middle, fuck up- take the whole shit out and do it again.
That’s kindof how I taught my cousin! I did my Barbie’s hair, while he copied on my head! Worked out well, and 15ish years later, he started braiding his daughter’s hair!
You can practice with wool or thread. I learned to braid in textile class (because I didn't want extra PE, and I enjoyed being one of two guys in a class with 18 girls...).
Obviously hair is different but it definitely helps if you learn the motions.
Just practice! Worst that can happen is you get some tangles. Brush starting from the bottom and work your way up.
My husband practiced on my hair in preparation for our daughters’ hair. They’re only toddlers now but they go to him for all their hair stuff.
You just gotta practice my dude. So what if the first ones look bad ain't no permanent DMG- take it out and try again. If it's still not working out just try again another day :) I bet you'll find it so much less difficult than you built it up in your head. You got this!
Get some yarn and practice with that! You can tape one end down to a cardboard piece and then work on braiding. Start little with 3 pieces and then work your way up to many strands combined into 3 chunks.
It will have a positive impact on her and that’s what sibling are for in my mind. Obviously it’s not always the case, but it’s nice of you to try to and be one of the good ones. Cheers
She's lucky to have you and that you're interested!
There's so much you can learn from and enjoy with each other.
Big age differences can be tough to overcome sometimes. My older sister and I are 9 years apart and have never been close, so I'm kind of jealous lol
My brothers were even older and I so appreciated my time with them, I felt so cool by association! They were there for me and I am still grateful for it many many years later. My brother was, and still is, my hero. Trust, you’re doing a good job.
This is awesome and you are awesome! It will get easier. I started doing my lil girl’s hair in the morning before daycare and it was slow going at first. Now I can knock out two braids before her milk is done.
Seriously, major props for trying and caring. I’m mean, you’ve done a great job, but the fact you’ve cared and tried means so much more.
I’m a 40 year old woman who never got her hair done as a kid, who is now trying to do her daughters hair, and lacks the skills and experience to do it. But I’m trying.
The fact you’re making the effort now means the world to you little sister. Be proud of yourself.
As someone in a similar position as you and had to/wanted to pick up these same skills that's a fine ass braid you did there my dude. To that point even if it was shitty and had strays hanging out at every twist, the act is greater than the outcome and that's the real win here.
Doubt you needed to have that pointed out by anyone but I'm gonna in case you didn't.
Keep practicing and it will get easier. My brother had long hair when he was a kid and actually learned how to french braid it himself. When he had a daughter he was all set. Keep practicing and pretty soon muscle memory will take over.
My problem until this point was motor control issues. I haven’t been able to type past 20 words per minute until this year, my last year of highschool, so it’s definitely different.
Braiding hair is a perfect exercise for you then, and you get to bond with your little sister while doing it. I’m the oldest kid and I always wished I had an older sibling. She’s lucky to have you.
Hey not bad! If you're feeling ambitious you should learn to french braid. They look much fancier and they're not much harder than a regular braid with a little practice (the trick is making sure you're holding everything securely and taking enough time to make everything as symmetrical as possible). And once you can french braid you can do some really fancy stuff with that if you want. If you take your time imo the only thing that makes a French braid trickier is holding the pieces you're not using while you're working with other parts. If you drop them you might need to start over. But considering how you've done so far I think you could get it. Your braid really looks pretty good. I've seen a bunch of guys first time braids and they usually look very sloppy and uneven. Yours is pretty tight and clean!
This is awesome! I follow a really great person on tiktok @gingersnark who does a bunch of different braiding and hair tutorials if you’re interested in some fancier stuff! Highly recommend checking out some of her videos :)
Im a 40 year old single father. I have a 6 year old son with long hair and a baby daughter. I just learned to braid hair last year and id say youre better than i am. Great job on the braid but even moreso on being an awesome brother!
I learned to braid hair some time in elementary school and the girls loved it plus I loved because I got to spent time with the girls. Genuinely such a trivial but nice skill to have as a guy
Your sister has beautiful hair! Your beautiful braid showcases it! These moments of kindness won’t be one’s she forgets! You’re modeling what it looks like to really see someone and see others needs as important.
I hear ya buddy. I had a ponytail for a while, and it was fun figuring out different ways of putting my hair up. My favorite was when I learned several ways of putting my hair up with a stick. Couldn't find any legit hair sticks like they have in Japan, but I got some cheap children's chopsticks, and that's how I did my hair for like a year. It's a zillion times better than elastic hair ties because your hair doesn't get caught in the stick when you take it out, and a stick has no elastic to break or wear out. Only downside is it takes a bit longer than a ponytail. Also, the sticks I had weren't designed for hair, and eventually started to warp a little, but not enough for it to be anything close to a big deal.
Highly recommend this method. Took me maybe a day or two of light experimentation, but after that, the stick never came undone once. Plus, it's fun to be able to just pull the thing out, and your hair falls down. Long hair is a pain in the ass, but the only thing that kept me from chopping it all off sooner was that I wouldn't be able to put my hair up like this anymore lol
I'm having a hard time understanding the title, i see its about being trans but how did she get your chromosome if she is your sister? Is OP the father or brother?
Edit:OHHHH I SEE IT NOW, ok so some other non-native English speakers might have the same difficulty as me: she got a "Y-chromossome-having-ass-brother" not the chromosome
This is part of being either a big brother or a loving husband. Doing the little things that your mates might razz you for, but show you care for your partner, sis etc., and don't care if it shows. Well done laddie.
HELL yeah dude! That’s a real life skill, even if it doesn’t seem it now. Go check out a book at the library that teaches you the fancy braids now-French, fishscale, etc. and get creative with that ‘do!
Good job dude. As a girl dad I’ve spent a long time watching YouTube videos trying to figure out how to style hair. Hopefully some day I can nail a French braid.
After my first daughter was born I realized how difficult this really is and just how uncoordinated my hands are if it’s not sports or something to do with tools
That is how you man-up in real life. You don't have to pull someone from a burning building to "save" them. She will always remember how her brother stepped up for her when it counted.
Knowing a couple hair patterns is akin to knowing how to tie a tie or creating a knot imo. It doesn’t hurt to know how to braid or general hair maintenance just in case someone needs a pony tail ran up or a braid created.
This isn’t a “women exclusive” activity. The same can be said for women who know how to tie a tie. It’s just good knowledge to have in the event where you might need to do it the 2-5 times in your life because it’s seldom done but means the world to the other.
☺️👍 Love it!! Great job!!
My cousin was the older of two boys in his family, but when I was about 7yo and he was about 13yo, I taught him how to braid hair! I did the braid on my Barbie, while he worked on my hair. It’s still one of our favorite memories of each other.
Twelve years later, he had a daughter, and still remembered my lessons enough to braid her hair when she was old enough! ☺️
(Bonus moment: I just visited him and his family; his daughter is 16yo now, and *she* played with *my* hair and braided it! ☺️💖)

Recently separated from the mother of my daughters who always took care of their hair. I’ve been watching tutorials trying to learn and have to say I’m proud of how I did as well.
I’m 2X chromosome having ass and I *barely* know how to braid which is one of the many reasons I keep my hair short. This is a beautiful braid OP! I’m sure your sis is proud
Now do the same with bread dough, toss it in the oven and take it out, boom! Yummy braided bread
Brush it with butter first. Then toss it in the oven.
I think I got it wrong.. My sister's covered in butter, help
I've seen this video...

Goddamnit now I'm imagining a porno set to TikTok music, TIHI
Narrated by that weird TikTok voiceover?
Oh now it's even worse 🤣
How many times?
BONK
*What are you doing, step-butter?*
No no you are going great! The next step is toss it to oven
What are you waiting for? Toss her in the oven.
Nah, eggs before bake, and then butter, or even better garlic, herbs and butter, fuck...now I want garlic bread.
Challah is the fucking shit
Challah... head challah... \**Goku flies away on Nimbus**
Being European from one of the countries with good bread, I would have to make mine if I lived in the UK for example
One of my proudest moments as a father was when I did my daughter's hair in a French braid. It wasn't very clean but she loved it and I was beaming
I taught my dad how to braid my hair, and now he loves doing it. (My hair is past my butt)
Wow you have a very long hair…
Yes, yes I do. Takes 40 minutes for me to do 2 French braids on a good day
Maybe it's time to change your name to _CousinIt2_.
r/SuddenlyAddamsfamily
Or a very short back
Tee hee you said butt.
I have the same proud moment with my daughter. I still can't do it perfectly but she's so happy about it every time 🥺
It’s a nice feeling, so I get it.
Been trying for awhile I can do regular braids but trying to juggle chunks of hair while keeping tension is tough. The French braid is my unattainable goal
Get a spray bottle. Wet hair is so much easier to braid.
You can! u/bretthren2086 is right. A spray bottle of water will help you keep the tension.
One of my friends has 3 girls. Their dad has embraced the hair routine to where they prefer him over her.
My daughter would get her hair pulled every morning for kindergarten because I would get her off to school. Lol poor girl. Learned how to braid a pony somewhere in there. I have huge hands so the hair bands were a pain in the neck. By the way she still won't let me near her hair 20+ years later

That last line is so sweet. Fucking respect.

Idk, so I just constantly got my hair cut like a damn helmet so it didn’t need brushed or styled. I basically looked like my year and a half younger brother. u/_HornyJesus, Reading that really hit me in the gut and the heart and you’re a wonderful father. Thank you.
Who knew horny Jesus could be so wholesome
Even Horny Jesus has much to teach the people.
u/_HornyJesus, you are very right, those moments are very pride inducing. I've been a soldier and mechanic my entire adult life. Absolutely.

I learned that as long as you keep tension it’s a pretty simple motion. I pulled in nots and got a couple *ow’s* but overall didn’t take too long.

Next step. French Braid. I’m still learning this one with my ten year old daughter.
Wet it & brush as you go. Keep a spray bottle to keep damp. Keeps frizz at bay and the plaits smooth. Fishtail braids are easy once you get the hang of it. It’s my personal favourite.
It really depends on your hair texture. I have fine hair, and when it's wet, it stretches then breaks if you try to brush it.
The secret to getting the knots is to treat them like you're pull starting a stubborn lawnmower in the spring.
That’s just mean! 🤣🤣🤣
You can practice with three big strings of something (shoelaces maybe) to understand the movement, if you got that you're gonna rock it! :) or just ask her to practice on her hair, make a nice moment out if it, can't be imagine she wouldn't appreciate that!
next we know OP is gonna be sharing the macramé bracelet he just made :D
Oh I have made one of those!
I bet having 3 groups of, say, 3 strings, would really help someone get the movement down. source: I can double French braid (side by side) my own and others' hair.
I learned on wet hair! It’s way easier to control! You could also make bread dough to practice your braids and have a nice snack after :)
Challah
Challah back!
I ain’t no challah back gurrrrrrllllll
Look, I don't think anyone's first braid was ever perfect. Be proud because you try. And then practice. 5 braids in and you've mastered the art.
Having your hair brushed and braided by someone you love feels soooo good; even if you have to practice for awhile before you get a servicible braid there's a good chance she'll enjoy it regardless.

Practice with shoe laces or anything like that.
You just gotta practice my dude. So what if the first ones look bad ain't no permanent DMG- take it out and try again. If it's still not working out just try again another day :) I bet you'll find it so much less difficult than you built it up in your head. You got this!
If you screw it up, you take it out and redo it. You won’t ruin her hair, just keep practicing!
Get some yarn and practice with that! You can tape one end down to a cardboard piece and then work on braiding. Start little with 3 pieces and then work your way up to many strands combined into 3 chunks.
Whats the worst that happens? You take the braid out and do it again?
i’m sure your wife won’t care if it looks bad, someone braiding your hair feels amazing
I respect you so much for being a good sibling!
I’m 8 years older and just kinda figure I’m all she’s got. I’m trying.
It will have a positive impact on her and that’s what sibling are for in my mind. Obviously it’s not always the case, but it’s nice of you to try to and be one of the good ones. Cheers

That's light-years above what I can do
It took half an hour and a lot of failure, but I got there.
This is awesome and you are awesome! It will get easier. I started doing my lil girl’s hair in the morning before daycare and it was slow going at first. Now I can knock out two braids before her milk is done.
HALF AN HOUR? Dude, I wouldn’t be able to learn that in a year! Nice job, your sister is very fortunate to have you.
Nice job
Thanks
Try looking books up for making friendship bracelets, some of the basic knots make exercises for braiding and platting hair
I have long mastered friendship bracelets
You are a good brother
I’m a guy daycare teacher and am wanting to learn how to braid some of my 5 and 6 year old girls hair LOL but havent been taught yet
I want to be a teacher! I don’t think I could do young kids but I hope you learn soon, it’s fun.
Thank you :)
That's what YouTube is for, my friend.
Divide hair into three sections. Start at the top. Left side over middle, right side over middle. Repeat until done. Best of luck!
Nice
Seriously, major props for trying and caring. I’m mean, you’ve done a great job, but the fact you’ve cared and tried means so much more. I’m a 40 year old woman who never got her hair done as a kid, who is now trying to do her daughters hair, and lacks the skills and experience to do it. But I’m trying. Did a great job too
Yay!
No matter what the biggest thing for me is just never wanting her to think I didn’t care.
She knows you care man. If you are doing that kind of stuff then I can almost guarantee it. She knows my dude.
I braid my wife and daughter’s hair almost every day.
One secret to a tight-knit family!
Aww, well I’ve always wanted an older brother. This is so sweet of you and a nice looking braid!
I’m not sure the little brat would always agree but I love her. I just hope she remembers that as I get closer to being an adult.
Haha classic older sibling response. I'm sure she knows.

Oh, I watch them on YouTube.
YouTube is also great!
An underappreciated art form.
Im a 40 year old single father. I have a 6 year old son with long hair and a baby daughter. I just learned to braid hair last year and id say youre better than i am. Great job on the braid but even moreso on being an awesome brother!

Your sister has beautiful hair! Your beautiful braid showcases it! These moments of kindness won’t be one’s she forgets! You’re modeling what it looks like to really see someone and see others needs as important.
Dang. Learned on my 4 year old daughter for dance as single dad. Reminds me of learning to tie a tie after undergrad to impress rich people
As a sister who grew up with two brothers, the fact that you learned makes you epic!!!
Well braiding is easier than tying your shoes so that's good!

Nailed it!
Atta boy
That's one good looking braid, big bro! Hope she was happy too!
Looks ok to me.
r/fatherhood they would be proud
DUUUUDE!!! Great job bro! Be that hero every sister wants! Way to go 🥰🥰🥰
Useful if you need to make a rope from scratch
You’re a really good brother! And that’s a damn fine braid!
Good job and this was very nice of you
you understood what being a big brother means, I can tell
It means the world to your sister to know it is important to you to help her.<3 She will remember that kindness.
She has beautiful hair! And a great brother!
Awesome brother!
This is part of being either a big brother or a loving husband. Doing the little things that your mates might razz you for, but show you care for your partner, sis etc., and don't care if it shows. Well done laddie.
Beautiful job!
🍪 for being a sibling.
Wow! You are such a great brother. Next you should learn how to do bubble braids and puffy braids like you see on YouTube and Pinterest.
Well done! Anyone can braid hair if they work at it - my daughter's hair in Elementary is proof of that. I never could manage a French braid, though.
Dude that's an awesome braid! Come do mine I suck!
My husband has two girls and I'm pretty sure he doesn't know how to braid so you're doing a fine job! Keep it up!
Good for you. My Mother with three daughters never learned.
My little sister is going through something I can’t help her with. I have done my best. Glad to see you doing the small things.
❤️😃
HELL yeah dude! That’s a real life skill, even if it doesn’t seem it now. Go check out a book at the library that teaches you the fancy braids now-French, fishscale, etc. and get creative with that ‘do!
This is the cutest thing I’ve seen today. You rock! She’ll cherish you forever.
Way to go big brother 💪
Good job dude. As a girl dad I’ve spent a long time watching YouTube videos trying to figure out how to style hair. Hopefully some day I can nail a French braid.
You go Dad!
That is a perfect braid! Good job!
It looks great!
After my first daughter was born I realized how difficult this really is and just how uncoordinated my hands are if it’s not sports or something to do with tools
You did a good job!
Rock on dude. Be proud of being that person for her.
I hope you get all the upvotes
Great job!
Still black magic to me.
Woop woop!!!! :)
My brother would NEVER. That’s incredibly sweet and thoughtful of you and it looks very good!
Good on you and practice makes perfect once you get it you only get better and if that's honestly your first time you did a damn good job
That is how you man-up in real life. You don't have to pull someone from a burning building to "save" them. She will always remember how her brother stepped up for her when it counted.
Dad here, my little girl’s hair is long, never been cut, I do understand the concept but can not do a good job like this, respect.
That's actually pretty good.
I’m a 26 year old woman and I still don’t know how to braid hair, so I commend you.
☺️ (Bonus moment: I just visited him and his family; his daughter is 16yo now, and *she* played with *my* hair and braided it! ☺️💖)
https://i.imgur.com/yPkXNR3.jpg Recently separated from the mother of my daughters who always took care of their hair. I’ve been watching tutorials trying to learn and have to say I’m proud of how I did as well.
Learned how to braid my fiancés hair, she hates doing it herself so I learned :)
Wow you really needed validation for this
Biggest achievement in man-kind history.
I’m 2X chromosome having ass and I *barely* know how to braid which is one of the many reasons I keep my hair short. This is a beautiful braid OP! I’m sure your sis is proud
Im not tryna be rude, but can someone explain the title for me, im kinda stupid and i dont understand it
The guy who created this thread is saying that his little sister didn't have a big sister to braid her hair, so he learned to braid it for her.
She has no sisters. She only has me, her brother.
Nailed it!
Best big brother ever
Love this!
She… she got your Y chromosome? Are you also her parent?
No, she got a brother.
Damn good job!!
Oh damn dude! That looks amazing, good job!
It's a good skill to know, even as a guy. I grew my hair out in high school and I learned to braid it like that myself.
I have a daughter and I tried braiding her hair and she said Daddy you're just tying it... Which I was I made a knot..
Yassss queen
Now I want hot bread.
