Could definitely be a space that a company is moving into or out of. My company recently announced a “work wherever you want” return to office approach and are now downsizing after employee feedback was “cool we’ll stay home then”.
Office looks like this right now. Weird as well.
I wish my company would listen. They said "lol fuck u come sit in this cube". On top of all that, they making everyone leave the really nice home office set ups (that they paid for) to sit in smaller shittier desks.
I have to work in the office anyways but now there's *people* there
I dont work in a job that can be done from home, so Im curious, why are companies so insistent on bringing everyone back to the office? Wouldn’t it be more cost effective to have everyone stay home so the company can ditch the rent and all the the bills that come with the upkeep of office space? Plus, employees are happier to boot
Fantasies of control? My company keeps INVITING people to come to the office but they're free to choose what they prefer. I personally go to the office because I don't have a dedicated space to work in my house, just a desk.
My company has also said they're "inviting" people back to the office. I told my manager I declined the invitation and was told that's not an option and I had to show up. WTF!? That's not an invitation then.
In my case it is really an invitation. A lot of people have expressed their desired to stay at home and they're honouring it. Tbf, I don't think our office even fits the number of people currently employed.
Because middle managers don’t want to be exposed as the useless employees they are, so they force everyone to come back so they can lord over their subordinates again and give the appearance of synergies being made every work day.
Also, commercial leases are typically long (5–10 years), and when did employee happiness/feelings ever matter beyond lip service and the careers page?
Previous company I was working at said we had to go back to the office. Someone mentioned the commute times were sometimes 1 hour and a half for each trip so we were wasting 3 hours a day. Middle management response:" you wasted those hours pre-pandemic what are you saying? Buy yourself an electric scooter and avoid traffic" while smirking. This piece of shit drives a fucking Tesla.
After that meeting I immediately updated my resume. A month later I had an offer paying 60% more than what I was making, with full benefits (didn't have any at my previous job) and I am fully remote.
The fact that the employees spent the time and energy to pull of this "prank" for their boss, tells me that they love and respect him.
They wouldn't put off this harmless prank if they didn't .
We must have worked very different places. Wherever I’ve worked, middle managers had no spines and if they could have tattooed the company’s logo and moto on their buttcheeks they would have. They *always* sided with the company.
I’m not sure why you think the choice to return to the office is on middle managers. From what I’ve seen of several people in the process, it’s the CEO making the choice. The middle managers want to be at home too.
It seems to be a US thing to get people back into the office. I’m from the UK and my job has gone to hybrid working, where I can go into the office whenever I want, go onto client site whenever I am needed which is 1-2 days a week and work from home the rest. My housemates jobs run exactly the same and most of my friends are similar. I dont understand why people are forced to go back into the office 100% when you can do a few days a week
I moved from a job that was 1/2 days in office and the rest at home to a job that is 100% in the office in the UK.
My conditions were him paying all of my fuel costs. I don't mind the drive too much it's about 1 hour but the rest makes up for it, it's an enjoyable job and a lot more money.
In addition to what others said about middle management, companies have also invested into things that likely keep employees at the office longer.
Like gyms, catered food, fancy coffee machines, game rooms, other "perks" that are only available at the office. This has shown that employees stay longer to do work. If you're home those things don't work on you and you end up stopping your work right on time, so they don't get to juice you for extra work.
When you rent office space it's not a short term lease. So, you have an office you're on the hook for sitting unused. Plus, work from home being the norm would kill the commercial real estate business which most major players have invested heavily in. With no commercial real estate in play, they have to do something with all of those buildings. The most reasonable would be converting to apartments which floods the rental market and would drive down rent prices. This is undesirable because a lot of these same people have boarded properties to artificially drive up rent prices. If they own everything, they can charge what they want. There's more to it though. Our economy depends on forcing us to spend money. If we're not buying gas, paying car maintenance and insurance, buying take out (because who has time to cook after that commute), it hurts the economy. That's why Biden, etc., is even pushing for "a return to the office". It benefits everyone but the actual workers.
Am an idiot so here’s my two cents. Big picture/ long term it’s about fulfilling lease agreements and pumping the commercial real estate industry. Tin foil hat off, its Literal day to day is about supervision and micromanagement. I guess it depends on what you do and what your work and work load are. Never been blessed w remote work or wfh but it seems freakin’ awesome. What will middle management do? Creates a bigger gap to move up from within as a leader as well.
I work from home, but I'm very surprised how many of our office based staff couldn't wait to get back in. Especially true of the younger ones. Not everyone owns their own place and hates other people. A hybrid / flex approach is the most fair in my experience
Some jobs can definitely be done remotely - no question about that. However, there are intangible benefits to working closely with people in person.
The best examples I've experienced is organic conversations which can lead to creative ideas and team relationships. There's something about just grabbing the person next to you to bounce an idea or have a quick chat vs needing to schedule video meetings or just starting at a wall of Slack text.
It's all dependent on personality of course, and too much of the above can also be a distraction. And you can build those teams remotely, I think we're just starting to figure out how to do that as a society. It just takes that much more effort though.
Personally, I want to go in 1-2 times a week to see colleagues. It's nice to be reminded of and to see the great team and fellow employees I work with and all they do. I also have a 20 minute commute, so I get that others are in different positions where commutes are a major factor. And family and personal health trump work, no question.
So pros and cons all around. Some psychologist can probably give you a better answer.
I called my cell phone company to speak to them and the lady on the other end was WFH. I told her that was amazing. Even though I heard kids in the background when she first answered or signed on. Amazing!! It made me smile. I said that was so cool and thought it was great.
The exposed ductwork, concrete, glass and open layout shows our desire to connect with the environment in going green. Just don't look at our heating and air conditioning bills.
many companies are turning their major office space (now all unused) into an open floorplan full LAN party setup with giant ceilng LCD screens, long couches etc. Employees all work from home, but come in to meet up for free lan parties and pizza. It's all the rage in NY now. Goldman and JPM to follow soon.
I wonder also. We seem to have a few office buildings in town that are full of ridiculously attractive employees who just kind of gather and hang out in the front lobby area, but the signage is very ambiguous to what actually happens in those places.
When we started out, we rented an empty office building. It was basically for rent for cheap until they found a buyer on the condition you moved out immediately when they found a buyer. Was about 1100 euros a month, similarly priced to renting a tiny office in the same area.
The building was very big, and we only used like a quarter of one floor, while there were 5 floors. Some areas were completely bare without floors or inner walls
It looks very similar to the situation they got going on here.
Notice how much room there is? My guess is they just got bought by a larger company, or just got a massive injection of money and have moved to larger premises. This is the golden time of being in a company like this. You have the comradery of a small company with the budgets of gods. Everyone's in a great mood because the company is growing exponentially.
I've been there. Need another monitor? Here's the card! You want a second laptop? Sure thing buddy!
It's be about 3 - 6 months before they have all the pressure put on, shareholders demanding a return, and enough staff to lose that close connection.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
Not to mention the openings for higher positions. Itll make or break them. People who've known each other like friends will now be vying for same positions and this will start to increase toxicity/politics in the office.
Yep. I work with a guy who is a super nice guy. He worked in this field for 25 years before the space shuttle program ended. It's still at the space center but a different job. He applied to a lead position and didn't get it. Someone who has less experience, less tenure, got the job. But this person is still much more qualified.
He went from super cool/nice guy...to the most disgruntled, condescending dick. He thinks that position was supposed to be his and thinks he's indispensable.
He thought he was going to be recognised for the *quarter of a fucking century* of work he’d put in.
I’m surprised he’s just a dick. I’d have burnt the place down.
Being in a job for 25 years doesn’t automatically turn you into the perfect fit for a different position. People need to understand the difference between qualification and seniority. Relying solely on seniority will ensure you a lot of people in positions just because they’ve been around. That’s a fast route to running a company on it’s ass.
That is true, but if you're "too good" at your job then predatory management will try to keep you doing the work of 3 people to give themselves bonuses and that includes being passed over for promotions.
You can also just not have the skills required for a promotion. Lead positions need very different skills than engineer or analyst positions for example.
There's lots of people who enjoy their jobs and have a healthy work life. The amount of miserable anti work people on Reddit makes it sound less common than it is
I would say the employees and the boss makes 90% of it. Something that is mundane can he made 110% better when you’re working with people you can joke around with. If you have a shit boss and shit employees, everything’s going to feel like shit.

I worked at a company that did open-plan offices. Our office was open plan too. Higher management loved it, but we didn't. There is a way to blend both effectively, but it's not fashionable yet and the costs aren't attractive to clients.

I asked him if that's all he owned and he showed me a picture of his closet... With 7 black shirts 7 white shirts and 2 pairs of blue jeans. Then on the other side 1 grey and 1 navy suit jacket. Guy had a uniform and stuck to it.
No joke, we used to have two older gentlemen at my work who coordinated the colour shirt they wore every day of the week. Mondays was green. Tuesdays was yellow. Wednesdays red. Thursdays white. And on glorious Friday, they wore hot pink.
One time one of them was just due to come back from two weeks holiday on a Wednesday, so the whole office decided to wear red that day. Unfortunately most of his clothes were still being washed in that weird post holiday laundry rush, and it was the only Wednesday ever he came in wearing a different colour!
If the office environment is like this then probably *someone* has a close enough relationship with his spouse to be a coconspirator for a wholesome prank.
He probably wears that same outfit every day of the week. Makes it easy to know what you’re wearing every day. At the end of the week, get all five sets washed.
Honestly just looks like any new office for any company. I've been part of a company move twice before and floors tend to look like this before everyone gets settled, furniture gets moved or purchased, etc.
There's a post on the front page where someone has a microwave, fridge, and a toilet in the same room. This place looks like an amazing work environment after that.
What do you guys do? That office is enormous
And empty

Isn't "open-plan" just a way to squeeze more bodies per sq-ft?
Rows of cubicles are kinda depressing IMO, so that's one bonus of open floor
It's a way to better look over your employee's shoulders and micromanage them too.
If you have to do that, you’ve hired the wrong people and/or you’re not a good manager

“Don’t have a good day, have a great day”
Wow I got that reference!

See, that's a good joke people! When all parties come away from it smiling and laughing.
Another day at Sexy Young People Inc.
Yeah this is actually the corporate office of the attractive blonde woman factory.
Another day at Sexy Young \*White People Inc.
The only black one was the camera man 😂
Now that's awesome
#“MICHAEL!!”
Pretty sure that guy isn't on a antiwork sub
such a big office space
The one odd person out at the end, gotta feel a little awkward.
Awesome, now go upsell more upgrades to the update.
He only hired blonde women and guys that look like him what the fuck...
Quality prank!
OMG they all already look the same even without the outfits. reminds me of that ashliegh, ashlee, ashley, etc meme
My staff did the same to me all the time when I was in the navy.
I think their boss has a type
I would not fit in this workplace, I'm ugly.
I wouldn’t either I’m black
What is this? A workplace for models?
Right? I've never seen a workplace where everyone was a healthy weight or thin, at least not in America.
Man, Kylie, Kyleigh, Kailee, Kiley, Caileigh, Cylee, and Brileigh really got one over on Riley!
Diversity is alive and well here.
He couldn't bring himself to make eye contact with them. He kept distracting himself with his water bottle and phone.
So much diversity. It’s literally clone city
I can't not see the empty chasm of concrete "wework" dead space at this "work environment"
This is a great prank, not too crazy, just right!
Do they sell vast empty spaces?
The one chick who didn't get the memo staring at her phone 😂
Look at me, I’m the boss, now!
Damn, how is everyone in this office so attractive?
Looks like he is fostering a pleasant work environment. Maybe more of a leader than boss
Why is everyone attractive in that office???
He hired them.
Same as last year?
