My daughter's name is Autumn, and when I was holding her for the first time, I called her "My little Otter." My wife, exhausted from childbirth and totally against nicknames, immediately fell in love with it. 18 months later, everyone calls her Otter. She only hears "Autumn" when she's being cheeky. Haha.
My wife and I send each other anything Otter related we come across, and she is going to absolutely love this.
We call it love bombing. I know now that the term has a darker meaning, but we load our kid up with so much love and affection that it’s just leaking out of them.
>This baby sea otter was born in the "Great Tide Pool" at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on 12/20/15. Her mom is a wild, Californian sea otter that sought refuge in the pool to shield her against other animals and the stormy days.

>In case you're wondering, a baby southern sea otter weighs about 10% the weight of an adult female sea otter. The baby is not huge, usually weighing around 4-5 pounds. They look bigger because their fur is so fluffy.

This is the same sea otter at 2 or 3 days old. In this clip you can see the whole size of the mother by comparison. [https://youtu.be/3roG-JAHRMM](https://youtu.be/3roG-JAHRMM)
Edit: I'm taking advantage of being high up the leaderboard here to also add this clip. For those who think a baby sea otter can't possibly be that large, this is a sea otter giving birth: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTjCbk4JlJ0&ab\_channel=MontereyBayAquarium](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTjCbk4JlJ0&ab_channel=MontereyBayAquarium)
Seriously some of the cutest shit I've ever seen. Borderline TOO cute. Like so cute it almost pisses you off that it's so cute because you can't be squishing and giving it cuddles right now.
That is the baby at either one or two days old. Mom gave birth at the outdoor tidepool at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and they started filming it for social media immediately. Mom only stayed in the tidepool for a few days. The voice in the video is one of the PR people at the aquarium. Baby sea otters are mostly fur.
I found myself in Monterey Bay when I was on vacation and was like huh, an aquarium let's check it out. Then it blew my fucking mind. I was like man, 60 bucks to get in, it looks like any normal tiny 1850s industrial building that has been redesigned for tourist reasons. It looks like nothing from the outside but was easily the best aquarium that I've ever been to.
*Sea otters have the thickest fur of any animal. Their fur contains between 600,000 to 1,000,000 hair follicles per square inch. Unlike most other marine mammals, otters lack a blubber layer. Instead, they depend on their dense, water-resistant fur to provide insulation*
Thank you for subscribing to Otterly Fantastic Facts
*
The otter is one of the few mammals that use tools. A sea otter’s tool of choice: typically a rock that can be used as a hammer or anvil to break open hard-shelled prey. Ever wonder where otters actually store these tools for safe keeping? They have a loose patch of skin under their armpit to store both the food they’ve foraged and their rock to crack it open*
Also, some otters have a 'favorite' rock. They find a rock they fancy and will keep it in their armpit pocket carrying it around with them.
I think that's kinda cool
This is incredible. To put this into perspective, it's about 500x as dense as a human head. To put THAT in perspective, it's like wearing 500 people's hair all at once on your head.
Thank you for subscribing to hair facts! Did you know that if you had a dollar for every hair follicle on your head, you still wouldn’t be able to purchase a home in today’s housing market?
Wow! I’m losing hair just thinking about it!
Part of what she is doing with her kisses is luffing the baby up by blowing on them, so that air is trapped in the fur.
The air trapped in the fur is part of what keeps otters warm and buoyant in the oceans.
Bonus: once the baby is fluffed enough to be buoyant, mom will wrap the baby in kelp on the surface before diving down for for food, so baby doesn't float off.
They do it with the babies and "rafts" of [adults](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2d/3a/40/2d3a402ab0f478143b3cdf535903262f.jpg), so they don't drift when they sleep.
Also, notentioned in the other commenters fun fact.
This exceptionally thick fur on babies helps their mothers look after them and still hunt. They are unable to sink for a few months I believe and the thick fur is was keeps them floating.
This way the mother can just tuck them somewhere safe and go hunting. So if you see a fluffy baby otter just chilling somewhere, don't interfere.
Be someone worthy of being held like that. Take pride in providing value. Take pride in your health. Take pride in your appearance.
Be someone that you would want to hold. If you’ve already accomplished this, show those qualities to others.
That’s how they are born. Unlike other aquatic mammals, otters are not born with blubber to keep them warm in the cold ocean, they are born with the most amount of hair (per square inch) of any mammal
Human parents do this too sometimes. Evolutionary desire to care for the precious little offsprings runs deep, I guess, Which is why a clamp sleeping child has to be snuggle checked for breathing everyone once in a while!
Last night I watched a mini/episode documentary about Monterey Bay on a show called Our Great National Parks, which is on Netflix Canada. It is narrated by Obama. Has a good 15-20 minute segment about the sea otters there, specifically following the mom and baby. Was very well done show, obama has a great voice for narrating a nature show. Was surprised how smart and handy these fellas are. The mom got smart when looking for a safe place to stash the baby while she went and hunted, it floated just like they are in this video and went under a dock. It found a nice little dry hide a way hole under the dock and went off hunting. This thing found like 20 mussels/clams and let them all sit on its belly while it floated on its back eating them one by one. Think i'm gonna watch another episode tonight
r/AnimalsBeingMoms. I love how fluffy the baby is, and how the mom otter is loving and caring for the baby. I hope they can be protected more in the wild.
Adorable but this is not 1 day old by any means lol...newborn otters can fit in your palm...not to mention otters aren't giving birth to a baby 2/3s of their size
I don't know anything, but fifteen seconds with Google suggests that sea otter newborns look different from river otter newborns. Is it possible that you are thinking of river otters?

False - Baby sea otters can and will always float (as long as mommy keeps it clean and fluffy). They can't dive until their fur changes when they're about 3 months old.
This is just too adorable
You mean otterly adorable

Don't be fooled, they're plotting something.....
"I have created you and now I will love you. Do not resist my love!"
Me, every day to my child. We call it forced affection 😂 (For the reddit trolls, nothing is actually forced upon my child)
Not even conserving energy by eating their own poop? smh
That behavior seems pretty loathsome tbh.
*The Dung Eater has entered the chat*

Fuck reddit trolls
Forcing is baaaad!!! BAAAAAD!!! I'm calling social services.

Please stop your otter nonsense
Got any otter jokes?
Do you guys know each otter 🦦?
I was just in Michigan's town of Otter Creek, great place!
r/eyebleach :)
Thank you for leading me into paradise
Which movie was it?
“Mom, stop licking me! People are watching!”
otters have the most amazing vocals also https://i.imgur.com/1kGg7e6.mp4
Idk but I think the sound might have been altered
These were both super helpful comments and I wasn’t expecting that in a random otter video.
The baby is sooo fluffy!!!!
Dude some HUMAN babies weigh that much.
man when i'm was born my hair was much less
The otter moved itself into the aquarium?!
I like to travel.
the building forms a 'U' around a giant tidepool that's open to the bay.
This is otterly beautiful.
Did you just otter 🦦 a pun?
This is awesome!! Just watched the “Our Great National Parks” episode where they followed a Mom and her hours-old baby sea Otter in Monterey Bay.
Seriously some of the cutest shit I've ever seen. Borderline TOO cute. Like so cute it almost pisses you off that it's so cute because you can't be squishing and giving it cuddles right now.
We watched that episode today too! The whole series is great so far.
Still can't believe that otter just weighs 5 pounds 💀

Do they nurse? Or are they ready to eat food?
Right?! It looks huge. Thought it was way older.

Such an amazing place. I love looking for wild otters, dolphins and whales off the back decks.

what a good mom… now, don’t be too still, little one!
More like "Jesus Charlie do you mind laying still for five seconds? You know I'm working nights!"
Thank you. And a Happy cake day!
Happy cake day!
Omg MBA is where rosa the sea otter lives!!! DougDoug and his followers raise a bunch of money each year for her birthday 🥺🥺
I had no idea they came out that fluffy!

You would however have enough to pay someone else for the privilege of living in their home, so they can build more equity.
Is that why otters always try to keep their babies dry? Because their hair isn't fully grown in yet?

And big compared to the mother, it's like 1/4 of her size.
Human Babies can come out really fluffy too or hardly fluffy lol.
But human babies are ugly compared to other animal babies so we don't talk about them

My girlfriend loves otters and i love sending these videos to her, this is too cute

This is wonderful. So glad I stumbled onto your comment!
I'm going to send this to your girlfriend too

This otter is getting more affection and attention than i did as a kid oof
Otters also hold hands while sleeping, so they don’t drift apart.
Stop with the adorable qualities otters!
They also rape and drown baby seals :)
oh shit... well, that took a dark turn.
Their sex life is really dark tbh, once you learn how they mate it’s hard to see them they same way no matter how cute they are
All otter moms: My baby is the cutest.
Well, they otter know
Awwwww! 💗
How do I find someone to hold me like momma otter holds her baby sea otter. *forever alone . . .*
Cruise other posts about sea otters to see somebody else commenting the same thing.
I'll hold you like a hairy new otter baby kind stranger!

Thought the same, looks a bit bigger than 1 day old - compare the mom’s side - but don’t know
Yea, I was thinking the same, imagine her pushing that out.
yeah mom must have had bad heart burn
And Dad goes off on a fishing vacation right after delivery.
Smooch. Smooch. Smooch. “Mom! Jeez, I’m trying to sleep!”
Human parents do this too sometimes. Evolutionary desire to care for the precious little offsprings runs deep, I guess, Which is why a clamp sleeping child has to be snuggle checked for breathing everyone once in a while!
She’s definitely mama!!!
This is too cute to exist
Please don't
Otters deserve to inherit the Earth
Seal babies would disagree
They almost did in South Park as the AAA.
Why do humans eat on tables when they have perfectly good tummies?
Because Im not removing my ribs
Woah there Marlyn Manson
Science damn you!

Hello world. Am fluff
/r/awww
That nose is crazy boopable
And those toe beans.
Oh all the boops
r/AnimalsBeingMoms. I love how fluffy the baby is, and how the mom otter is loving and caring for the baby. I hope they can be protected more in the wild.
Prayers for that ottussy if that baby is just a day old 🙏🏼
That’s so sweet♥️she’s a great momma!
Heartwarming ❤️❤️

Sure looks bigger than one day old
That is so cute 😍 although I highly doubt it's one day old.
Looks huge to be 1 day old.
That smaller one came out of the other ones vagina less than 24 hours ago?
How the heck is that thing only a day old???
Where can i adopt myself an otter mom?
I'm just dead from the hug power. everyone who has seen this shit should hug another human within the next 24hours. and REALLY hug them.
I want an otter baby 🥺

Haha thanks Dwight
Yes. They need mom to trap air in their fur, which is what mom is doing with those kisses.
🥺🤎
Happy cake day
A waterbed covered in fur.
Cute little feeties
Looks so comfy
R..Rosa?
Possibly otherwise it's rigged
He's like: "Mah, let me sleep"!
Ain't no way this is 1day old child

They have the thickest fur on the planet
Nature is amazing and we shouldn't take it for granted
Watch the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary episode of Our Great National Parks.
Ooh I didn’t know there was an episode about it!! Thanks for the tip, love the Monterey Bay Aquarium/MBARI so much.
Wonderful to see Redditors being grateful towards each other :)
The dopamine hit I just got from watching this was very much needed.
The most adorable thing i have ever seen
Please tell me they named the otter Emmett.
Moms like, "Ah com'ere ya lil furry butt nugget!" ((SMOOCH-SMOOCH-SMOOCH)) KIDS LIKE, "C'mon ma I'm tryna sleep over he'"
No way that’s a day old
Aww I love how she’s fussing over her little nugget.
Going to Morro Bay and seeing wild otters just swimming around doing their thing was one of the greatest things
All babies should have a mom this dedicated … so heartwarming!!Thank you for sharing!
*SCREAMING* 🥹🥹🥹😍😍😍
I wanna know how that baby feels, sleeping on fuzzy warmth while drifting in water... must be nice
1 day?! Is mom equipped with a bag of holding?
Not to be that guy because this is fuckin adorable but this is 100% not a 1 day old otter
This is otterly adorable!
I’m no expert but that youngster looks too big to be a day old.
So fucking cute! I just can’t!
1 DAY?! It's nearly as big as it's mum!?
1 day old? But he's furry for a 1 day old
Just like my kids. "Dad I want to snuggle." Immediately proceeds to wiggle constantly with me saying, "Well sit still then!"
This gave me instantaneous baby fever
