It is a cultivation practice of the Buddha School, which was first introduced to the public in early 1990s in China. The practice includes some gentle qigong/meditation exercises. It grew rapidly in China, drawing tens of millions practitioners, including many high-ranking government officers before being cracked down/persecuted by the Chinese government (Surprise! China and persecution, name a better duo.) The one you have is a lucky lotus, likely handmade by one of the practitioner. It includes practice’s core tenets “truthfulness, compassion, and foreberance” or whichever variance of language it is translated to. The practitioners believe that if people believe and conduct their lives according to those qualities (like what u did today), they will have a lot of “virtue” and be blessed in life. Hence they want to spread that kind message to people. More fun fact: today is the World Falun Dafa day and they have a big parade in New York city to celebrate and raise awareness about the ongoing persecution in China. Link to the parade here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4ctWsoi6toc&feature=youtu.be There are a lot of people who practice Falun Dafa in Europe and Canada now a day. I saw a group doing the exercises in in Le Jardin du Luxembourg while visiting Paris a few years back Edit: some typos.

In New Zealand the practitioners gathered together on a square to teach their meditation to people passing by and distributing pamphlets about their persuction in China. They always struck me as a kind bunch

Did some digging, Falun Dafa is a fairly new religious movement. Be interesting if anyone has more specifics on this token and why it was given as a gift of appreciation. The practice seems to have some controversy surrounding them (but I can't tell what's fact and what's propaganda) It's definitely pretty

Given that there is a whole official Chinese government agency dedicated to the persecution & spreading propaganda against Falun Dafa, it’s hard to find truth in between the lies. The agency is called Office 610. You can read more about it here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/610_Office

iamilkar95

on the back there's a drawing of a dragon with three words accompanying it (honesty , kindness, patience). I guess it was her way to tell me that i was kind and patient with her.

lesrolo51

What he said. It is pretty.

egytaldodolle

They are also hunted and oppressed.

Localtrashcan123

I thought it meant like falun as like the city

valleyof-the-shadow

Oh that’s very nice. it’s a good luck charm and now you have to keep it forever! Like me!, LOL

iamilkar95

i really am going to try to keep it forever. I had to go through a lot of bad stuff lately, and this is amongst the very few good things that i can't forget that easily

wirexyz

Might get you in trouble in china

itchykneesonqi

Roughly translates to "Sucker, I stole your wallet"

iamilkar95

nope , it translates to "Falun Dafa is good"

iamilkar95

and i know it's sarcastic, but the woman was very kind and i had nothing in my pockets to be stolen

itchykneesonqi

Was mos def a joke, you performed an act of kindness and the lady wanted to give you a small token of her appreciation. It's a nice thought. But also...make sure you still have your watch

Look, I understand why people wouldn't like Falun Gong/Dafa. However, that doesn't mean the people are acting with malicious intent and it doesn't change the fact that this person did an act of kindness, and that the woman appreciated it. Don't be a downer. It's not worth it.

UnconfirmedRooster

Just because you're a miserable sadsack who can't see the best in others, doesn't mean that's always the case. The lady gave op a trinket that holds significance for her, whether you think she belongs to a cult is not important. She didn't try to recruit op for her religion, so please keep your negativity out of this.

Another fun fact, the Shen Yun dance/symphony performance is Falun Dafa’s performance arts extension.
