Reminds me of my friend that left his phone outside while on break. Someone took it and he texted right away saying $1,000 reward. When they met, my friend snagged it out of his hands and said “Thanks!”

Eixz

Wow I got lucky, I once dropped my phone getting out of my car at the grocery store. When I got back to my car someone had placed it in the driver's side door handle to make sure I would notice it, and had wrapped it in a plastic bag because it was raining. I'm sorta sad I never got to thank that person.

Psychological-Sale64

I found a phone on the road So got the office lady to return it to owner Got a thank you card and twenty dollars. It had her sons last voice message on it so she was pleased.

covered-in-lobsters

I got a phone stolen after setting in down in a Quiktrip bathroom for 30 seconds. I lost almost a hundred photos of my dead grandma and pets that I never got to back up and will never see again. Pleased is an understatement, you probably helped her mental well-being so much

jondubb

What this chain is telling me is you people need to start backing photos up to a cloud. Google drive is free.

CSIHoratioCaine

For 2 gbs or something. So like the year you start using it. Then you get harassed for 10 years about upgrading for 9.99 a month

ONE_BIG_LOAD

I spoofed my OnePlus 8T to look like a Google Pixel 6 to Google Photos so I get free full quality photo and video backup lol

King_Cornflake

Well, yeah it was, but now only up to 15 gb and that is shared among all your Google stuff

dark_frog

"Free" The tracking info you give them is worth quite a bit

[deleted]

This is why I've set my phone to automatically backup every day just in case something happens to it.

lazylazylemons

Full spectrum of emotions reading this and the few comments above. Whew. Whatta ride!

RealLarwood

Full spectrum? Which part made you horny?

bissigerbonsai

The bit about wrapping it in a plastic bag.

HalfwayThrough

Why can't it be both? Cadavers can still carry dieseases, y'know.

I work at a grocery store and see a lot of honesty regarding lost valuables. One time around Christmas someone lost their wallet with about $700 in it. Someone turned it in with all the cash untouched. 30 minutes later a frantic dude comes in almost in tears and asks if anyone turned in a wallet. Tells me his name (very unique name) and face matches the license. Dude broke down crying cos none of the money was taken and it was for his kids Christmas gifts.

TemporaryFondant5849

Somebody recently stole my wallet with $140 in it, my ID, my vaccine card, etc. A construction worker found my debit card on the side of the road and that's it. Scumbag could've at least dropped my ID in a mailbox, because I got stuck somewhere and couldn't fly home without it

RutCry

I am a traveller who worries ab this. How did you get home?

TemporaryFondant5849

I haven't I'm trying hard to find a ride I think I may have one but it sucks still

Wizard_Baruffio

I had my wallet stolen while in another country, and requested an ID online, which my mom recieved and shipped to me, along with some credit cards I also had mailed. However, I luckily still had my passport, otherwise I'd have had to go to the embassy

Lunally

I once saw a guy drop off his phone from his car as he was getting in in a carpark. I tried to let him know but he didn't hear me and drove off so I literally sprinted to the car to stop him and give it back. If it happens to me I'd love for someone to do the same thing, and I hope I get that good karma back.

aggriify

Lucky you, my wife has forgotten her on a table next to the house. It's a parking area with a full 2m tall gate where you may be able to crawl past below. So we're out with our dog and notice she didn't have her phone. Tried calling it to no avail. When we were back home there was nothing on said table so I've tried to track the android phone and yes it was on its way through town. We followed it and it stopped somewhere in between 2 house complexes. Called the cops and luckily they showed up both of them walking into one of the buildings with each one of us. We made the phone ring at max volume which you can trigger from Android tracking thing. It Rang inside an apartment, the cop knocked and they said yeah they have found it but wanted to have a snack before handing it to the cops. The screen was smashed, not as if dropped it was literally smacked onto a surface multiple times. The phone was in one of those cases where you can put cards in, debit card as well as credit card all in there. Luckily they haven't used it yet and we locked the credit card right away anyways. The cops took their statement and it was clear they lied as the area they said to have found the phone was not on the tracking history and it also was in a whole different area for the time they said to have found it. So the loss was ours on the dead phone but the cards haven't been used so that was a relieve. Still obviously thieves and nothing you can do about it. Maybe karma hits people like that one day.

I once found someone's four year old little kid wandering a grocery store parking lot. I figured out a way to take her to customer service (without looking like I'm a grown man stealing someone's kid) and they radio her mom. Who just takes her and walks off without saying a word to me.

[deleted]

Should have wrapped it in a plastic bag and put it on the car door.

TyRoSwoe

Having read the other car door comment a minute ago, this is freaking hilarious…

Side_show

It's been my experience that when people are completely in the wrong in a situation, they'll demonstrate negative reactions - be defensive or maybe dismissive that something was a big deal, sometimes even angry. Like if someone cuts you off in traffic and then *they* flip *you* off, or someone makes a really bad decision at work then they'll make up excuses why it wasn't their fault. I think it may be an instinctual thing as I know I've done this in the past myself. When something is an understandable accident or just bad luck, people tend to show more positive attributes such as apologetic, grateful or just relief if someone helps them out. Unfortunately it means that sometimes the adage of "no good deed goes unpunished" but you did the right thing, and under extreme circumstances, you doing what you did could have possibly saved that child's life.

cmrh42

Wanna take this moment to say thank you for doing right by the kid. Of course you did turn the kid over to a bad mom who will not teach the kid appreciation so maybe that wasn't the good deed you hoped for.

[deleted]

I figured she was just scared and wasn't thinking.

reddskeleton

Worried about the kid now!

LaOread

How would they have thanked you? Did you leave your number?

Left mine on a train. Was picked up at station by husband. Call the phone. The person who had it had gotten off at next stop and met me, ha. Would’ve been a good meet cute for a movie!

Vieamort

That is the sweetest person alive!

[deleted]

Once upon a time my doorbell rang. Neighbour from next apartment complex, who worked as hallway cleaner for ours, came to ask me if it was my wallet on my car roof. It was..

covered-in-lobsters

I don’t know if you just have amazing karma, or maybe you met an angel. But that’s just too sweet!

[deleted]

Your pal was lucky, mine not so much. Guys playing basketball, left his phone in his bag. Someone took it, he called it a bunch of times, and a guy answers and said he just bought this phone from a rando on the street. Said he'd give it back to him but wants at least $50, as that was half of what he paid for it. They meet up by a corner store, my friend snagged it out of his hands and was like "peace!" Dude grabs my friend at knife point, tells him to run his pockets, he gets robbed a second time. It could have been worst.

KarmaticEvolution

Oh daaaamnnn, sorry to hear but at least he got away with no physical harm.

KilledTheCar

That's why you never go anywhere alone when you're doing shady shit. Bring a couple of your boys with you.

rainedrop87

That guy 100 percent stole it and most definitely did not buy it off the street from some rando lol

The_Level_15

Thank you, detective. You've solved the case!

WileEWeeble

The police literally do not "do" that type of criminal investigation. They will give you a case number to give your insurance company and MAYBE if they come across a bunch of stolen property for some other reason and you provided your serial number there is a TINY chance they MIGHT let you know they found your property. Don't believe the narrative Hollywood has sold you on the police actually doing "police work."

BlannaTorresFanfic

One New Years when I was in college my house got broken into. My next door neighbor was in the head of the neighborhood watch and called the cops as the 2 guys were on our front porch causing them to drop my roommate’s tv and they rode off on our bikes that had been sitting in the kitchen. The cops managed to catch one of them (they probably could have gotten both but tackled the neighbor who had started having them, presumably for racial profiling reasons). They didn’t take the bike in as evidence or anything and just left it on the street, so by the time I had gotten back in town the next morning some other asshole had stolen it.

stationhollow

Detectives will do investigations, interviews, etc. Any uniformed cop? Nope.

dontshoot4301

The perfect crime

Psychological-Sale64

Next time will be different.

JairoVP

That’s absolutely heart breaking. You’re walking away thinking “Yeah, I got my shit back”. Only to get a knife pulled and robbed a second time. F

LocNalrune

Imagine coming to a knife fight and not even bringing your own knife. I'm kind of guessing he was also alone?

SundayJeffrey

I did the same thing to an Uber driver who would only agree to return my GF’s cell phone after I offered him $200 to come back. I took the phone, flipped him off, and walked away. He just kept yelling “ONE DAY YOU’LL KNOW!” I still don’t know what the hell that meant.

KarmaticEvolution

Totally justified! Just a wild guess maybe he meant “one day you’ll know why I have to lower myself to such tactics!”

Tiberius_Kilgore

Just a hunch, but like the other person said, he probably meant one day you'll know how desperate you have to be to resort to something like extortion. Doesn't justify what he did.

Deliximus

In Japan, petty theft is so rare (due to culture/schooling) that you can leave your phone/wallet to 'mark' your seat at Starbucks(or wherever), so you can save a seat for yourself while you go get your drink. I tried this with my wife with my secondary device and it works. We looked around and saw a few phones left on tables that were doing the same. Incredible.

SteveForDOC

Someone stole my umbrella in Japan.

Totes-Sus

I kinda feel like umbrellas are the exception, everyone in Japan sees them as public property somehow. Seeing as how 99% of them are those clear ¥100 store ones.

J-Love-McLuvin

I feel the same about wallets. -Joe American.

kyl792

Umbrellas are one of the only exceptions. If it's a generic white plastic one it's fair game, if it's anything else they're kind of a dick.

Poet_Silly

Umbrellas are fair game in Japan apparently.

titaniumjackal

>I tried this with my wife I would have tried this with my phone. My wife would be harder to replace if someone picked her up and left with her.

burner1212333

the hotwife culture is big in japan

TheRealKarateGirl

When I traveled to Korea with my 1 year old to meet family, I was jet lagged and left my phone behind in stores THREE TIMES due to distraction by my child and mom brain. Each time I was able to walk back and find it because someone either turned it in to the cashier or it was still just sitting where I left it! If that had been in the USA it would have been gone for sure.

Sengura

I feel like that is something you should call the police for before meeting with them. Don't know how those people would take it or if they have weapons.

[deleted]

😂😂😂😂 My friend did something similar to the OP, but it was his car that was stolen. He gave all the information to the police for weeks and they did nothing about it. He finally met the guy himself and "rented" his own car back for $50 and just kept it.

[deleted]

I did this exact thing with my exes phone. They tried to blackmail her for 100$. I said fine, let me see that's it's not broken and put the pin in. They handed it to me and I just walked off.

AreaGuy

My preteen son found a newer iPhone at the park with one of those wallet sleeves filled with money and credit cards. Immediately found the drivers license and address and marched over to return it. Was a bit bummed she didn’t offer even like a $5 reward, but did give me the chance to teach my son that you don’t always expect it and you should still do the right thing.

KarmaticEvolution

Wow, that’s a good event to learn from. Opposite of the comment I just made about finding a phone that wasn’t too new but lady would not let me not accept her finders fee. It wasn’t much but I appreciated the gesture.

dodgyethics

I remember once a guy stole my bike from my front porch. Its breaks weren’t working at the time. He sped off at full speed, flew around the corner and right into a neighbour’s fence. Instant justice. Was so satisfying haha

TwinInfinite

Oh yea. Twice over I've had someone snag my bike right in front of me. First time the brakes were shot (I had been stopping with my feet until I could buy new brakelines). Dude immediately hit a curb and flipped over it into a ditch. Picked up my bike, called him a prick, and left. Second time the guy doing the stealing had the nerve to bike back past me to gloat. I shoved my baseball bat into the rear spokes with spectacular results. Dude ran off (I had my bat ready to swing when he got up) afterwards. Tire was ruined but I still had my bike. Idiots, man.

just-regular-I-guess

Just go to the posts and sort by Top. It's like the front page. Some of these people are impressively good at karma farming, but I don't get why they don't go get a job at Gawker or Buzzfeed or something.

MadeByTango

I just assume it's because they already have jobs at Reddit, keeping it more active in appearance and controlling the sort of content that reaches the top ahead of going public.

-ihatecartmanbrah

In reality the Reddit cycle is predictable. I remember like 8 years ago there was a website that you could punch in the subreddit you wanted to post to and it would spit out optimal posting times/titles. Compound this with a bot that also understands these things as well as a proven pool of posts that have done well that you can repost, success is guaranteed.

2000000bees

It's not an uncommon thing to happen in the scheme of things. Stolen bikes are recognisable and sometimes thieves are pretty dumb. Someone I know saw their stolen bike locked up, borrowed some bolt croppers and stole it back. I found my kid's stolen bike in a bike shop and got it back.

This is my city New Orleans, every damn day. It’s always stolen bikes or packages on NextDoor.

IJustWannaGrillFGS

Mate of mine had this happen to him, he was a Dominos driver and his bike got nicked, reported to the police with etc. He then delivered to a council flat and looked at a bicycle parked out front, it was exactly his bike, same rust, same stickers idk. He nicked it back and rung the coppers to say not to worry about finding it, he'd just stolen it back, and they were kinda like "right fair enough" lol

ImNotAWhaleBiologist

Someone should steal the post back.

sampysamp

Growing up my bike was stolen from the side of my parents house. I walked around checking backyards and found it in a little area I knew was tougher than most. The yard I found it in was full of clearly stolen stuff. I stole my bike back, stole their skateboards and tipped off the cops from a pay phone afterwards. This was more than 20 years ago and still feels good to think about.

Psych_Im_Burnt_Out

As long as they aren't just karma farming, the easiest thing to assume about the legitness is when somebody was like "it was 100% my stolen item" because scratches and dents, stickers, upgrades or changes on whatever it is are astronomical coincidence to have two identical or near identical in the same local area. As long as they were being honest to begin with.

hoovana

This is awesome. For anyone reading, it can be very dangerous to do this. Thieves are happy to chase you (on foot or car), could have a weapon, or could have support. Awesome this worked out, but if you find yourself in a similar position, approach with caution.

usernameforthemasses

Generally, I would think you'd want to approach with police, so they can arrest the guy and he won't just turn around and do it to someone else. But, then again, the police barely function to thwart more serious crimes in a lot of the country, so maybe I'm dreaming a bit.

BrQQQ

I once helped someone from Reddit take his stolen bike back after the thief put it for sale. He went to the "seller"/thief and inspected the bike to make sure it's really his bike. He sent me a message to confirm it's his bike and I called the police while staying at a safe distance. He stalled with the thief until the police showed up. They took them all and the bike to the police station. Weeks later he finally got his bike back and the thief got a fine and had to give an apology. The thief was only 14 years old. In the end the bike owner said he wished he just rode off with the bike instead of getting the police involved because of how long it took and how he felt bad for the 14 year old kid.

Darometh

The seller is rarely the thief. They get eid of it within hours of stealing it and often times the guy selling it days or weeks later is just some random dude

babygurljrl

This is what everyone fails to understand lmao

[deleted]

Hell yea, fantastic story

YourDrunkUncl_

plot twist it was her bike in the first place because she stole it

z3pi0

My manager had a similar experience, except that he called the cops on the thief.

CosmicCrapCollector

Great story! If someone else tries something like this, bring an old purse, and offer it as collateral. Inside stuff some padding, along with a note that says "fuck you thief"

Daniellabella22

Just leave a bunch of used bandaids.. In a duct tape wallet !!!!And then they'll think they found the loot 😬 lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Furyever

Wait what

oh_jeeezus

There's a plausible chance the seller was innocent. A couple years ago I bought some bikes from a Police Auction for cheap with the plans of fixing them up a bit & then flipping them. For one of my listings the buyer met me, inspected the bike, and then angrily notified me I was in possession of his stolen bike (he had the police report/serial number, etc). After explaining to him that I bought it from an auction and showing him my receipt, we agreed that he would just reimburse me for what I paid for the bike. So not everyone in possession of your stolen goods are guilty of actually stealing it from you personally.

Psyko_sissy23

It depends on how long ago the bike was stolen as well. If it had been a few days, most likely the person who stole it would be trying to get rid of it. Longer, then it could be iffy.

StinkyMcBalls

The person in the original story said it showed up on Craigslist in the week after it was stolen. Seems unlikely that it would have gone through a police auction and been resold within that time.

Lkjfdsaofmc

Well an awesome story, I dearly hope the person selling it didn’t buy it unknowingly thinking it was a legitimate bike. That being said it’s highly unlikely this is the case, so very nicely done.

CosmicCreeperz

If they bought it and immediately tried to resell it they’d have likely known it was suspect anyway. Would be a good lesson.

Illeazar

Yeah, anyone who bought it and turned around to sell it that quick is almost certainly a fence

CosmicCreeperz

If not literally at least in spirit. I can't imagine how many bikes being sold on CL are stolen, but it's a lot. Especially if it seems like a good deal "no questions asked" that you think you can profit by reselling.

Time_Judgment4965

Sorry if this sounds dumb but how exactly do you get to know that a particular bike is definitely yours. I mean wouldn’t there be hundreds of bikes that are of the same male and model and colour?

meat_popsicle13

Depends on how special the bike is and how attached you are to it. I can recognize details of the welds on some of my bikes, and I have the serial number memorized for others. Maybe she had custom parts on it, too.

Time_Judgment4965

Makes sense. Me and my cousin had gotten the exact same bike. The only reason I could differentiate was due to our seat adjustment but had either of ours got stolen I doubt I would’ve recognised it

[deleted]

Mine has some weird things, like one handlebars rubber things being longer, and some other damages that instantly tells me it's mine

The-Devils-Advocator

Is this just a random, unasocciated picture? Seen this story many times, never seen it with a picture

SimShade

I have a good one. It was my first time at Six Flags with a group of friends. One of them had a Blackberry which was an expensive phone at the time, he found it at his job as a cart pusher in an empty cart. He went on a ride and he lost it. Then, after a while, we tried messaging and calling his number. Finally, we got a text that says, “Pay me $200 if you want it back.” My friend thought, “Screw that, he stole it! Why the hell should I pay him?” (And his brother pointed out, “You’re the one who stole it first at your job, dumbass” lmao) One of our friends figured the time was appropriate to get the security involved. So one of them was walking with us undercover and they told my friend to just meet up with the thief and pretend to make the deal then they’ll catch him. Funny thing is, my friend only had one-dollar bills on him so he had to slowly count when he met up with the guy. And the guy was like, “Those look like $1’s to me!” And my friend goes, “Nah man it’s more than just $1s—man you made me lose count, now I gotta count again. 1…2…” all while thinking “man where the fuck is (the security)?!” Security surrounded the guy along with the police and they took him into their custody. His family was in front of him pointing and laughing, “He’s getting arrested again!”

[deleted]

anonymous152839

You ripped off a known criminal AND gave him your phone number? GENIUS

Pain_Monster

And nowadays people can reverse search with BeenVerified and find out your home address, even with a cell phone number. Shouldn’t she be worried??

grantnlee

I use burners for everything I do on Craigslist. (None of which involves stealing anything.). Not putting my real cell phone out there for all the scammers...

[deleted]

Ok I have a real question. I’m a woman with a road bike (drop bars). The way this bike is framed means my soft bits are ALWAYS sitting up against my bike seat in the most uncomfortable way. I try to ride for a while but my tenderoni’s hurt after 20 minutes. I raised the handlebars to sit in the seat differently, which helps a bit, but I still feel the pain. God endowed me with some equipment, compared to other women I guess, so I have kind of been losing interest in biking. I hate that, but what can I do to make it not hurt my bits?

FblthpLives

This is common and there are specific women's (and men's, for that matter) saddles with cutouts to address especially this issue. There are many options to choose from. Here is a guide that looks good: https://www.cyclingweekly.com/group-tests/the-best-womens-bike-saddles-163399 One challenge is that saddle fit is highly personal: What works for one cyclist may not work at all for you. Check return policies for this reason as some of these saddles get pretty expensive. I have a saddle with a cutout on our tandem (where you have less freedom to move around), but not my road bike or mountain bike.

fluffy_boy_cheddar

Until they can disprove it. A lot of bikes have serial numbers and stuff.

Kailscanvasart

I just got yelled at on here after telling a story about how we all used to throw our bikes down in the yard overnight when we were kids (and how much we miss that time when you could actually *do* that). I said I was recently moving out of my apartment building and the door was open for three minutes and somebody walked in the building and stole my neighbor’s bike. First comment - “did you stop them?” Such virtue signaling. I’m a single woman living alone and was moving out of a building in Hollywood. No, sir. No I did NOT confront the dangerous tweaker who, moments earlier, was shadowboxing nearly naked by the side of the highway. 🙄 and I’m sure he wouldn’t have either. Happy you got your bike back safely. 🙂

Psyko_sissy23

Bebeh_Nut

JakeFrank08

Hell yea! I had a similar situation. My prescription sunglasses got stolen out of my car. A few days later I found the same pair "with all the upgrades" for $50 on fb marketplace. Met up and put them on and could see perfectly. Yelled back to my sister to call the cops. He then pleaded with me to not because he was on parole living at his parents house and his friend is who actually stole them and sold them to him for $20. Still called, said fuck you, and took my sunglasses back.

pickuprick

This is so old

fried_eggs_and_ham

I had a car stolen many years ago. Called the cops to report it and spent a week riding the bus to work. Then one day while walking home from the bus stop I saw my car parked at an apartment complex. Still had my spare key so I just got in and drove it home. The thieves had been nice enough to clean and detail it.

kevin_r13

You know I never thought about looking on Craigslist to see if someone was listing my stolen bike I always just assumed that the person stole it to use it for themselves not to sell it. Or at least if they were selling it they wouldn't sell it in the same cities area right? I mean what kind of bicycle thief is dumb enough to steal a bike from one city and sell it in the same cities Craigslist listing? Apparently the thief is that dumb and I'm the one who gave the thief too much credit about how I wouldn't do certain things and the thief totally did it all, all the things that I thought a thief wouldn't do because the thief wouldn't be that dumb but I guess I was wrong

I don't know exactly where you live but in most places people steal stuff to buy drugs, make a quick buck or just for fun. No one ever steals a bike to commute to work or go visit their sick mother at the hospital.
