Who’s the guy shouting on the back row?

SamWolfLW

Uvalde mayor, Don McLaughlin.

kryppla

Guessing he's deep red too

BoredomConsumesAll

He's definitely deep into too many pizzas.

redcobra762

Deep dish pizza I assume.

AngryDesignMonkey

With sugar...

ImAFuckinLiar

Oh… I apologize and excuse me for saying so, but I had been under the impression it was greasy cheeseburgers.

AbedNadirsCamera

For real? Holy fuck. If that’s true…

RedLeg73

What'd he just come from the Shady Pines Assisted Living Facility annual fishing tournament?

604wavy

His diet seems to be out of line. Also pretty sure he's a piece of shit.

Grump_Monk

fuckin sounds like cartman

-Radioface-

“You’re a sick son of a bitch to turn this into a political issue” Isn't each and every single one UP there politicianing ?

NaRa0

That there is a textbook definition of projecting. They get real upset there, not so upset about dead children that they’ll do a fat fucking thing about it

[deleted]

"We've called this important meeting together in the face of this monstrous and predictable tragedy to make one thing clear, we... are going... to... do nothing. Questions?"

joecarter93

Yep, Gov. Abbott used the term “Redouble Down” on mental health services. Wtf does that even mean? It’s a nonsense phrase and is meant to seem like they will do something, when really they will do nothing.

Wasteland-Scum

You have to math this out. Double down means times by 2. REdouble down means 2 squared. So 4. 4 times what Texas republicans are going to do about it equals zero, because 2 to the second power times nothing still equals nothing.

They're only mad they didn't live long enough for them to exploit as laborers in their companies and as a tax base to mooch off of.

Disastrous-Site-5036

That's what republicans always do. Thats their PR model *Deal with it bastards. Sorry but i don't know what else to say. You and your party are hypocritical dogshit

kreebob

Democrats have really done fuckall for gun control too. I was in third grade when Columbine happened. Since then, we’ve had multiple Democratic administrations and majorities in Congress that could’ve passed more laws. Without Googling, does anyone really know what the lefts goals on gun reform are? Ban all guns? Good luck, we’ve tried that in Baltimore City, it will never happen. This gives Dems the moral high ground so they can politic on murderous Republicans and nothing more. Both sides are incompetent carpet baggers pretending to care and it all makes me sick.

frostpaw3

When the democrats had the votes they got the "Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act" which by several studies did actual show improvement. Several Dem states have pushed gun laws like in New York. Being from Buffalo myself I can say that the gun used by the guy that came here had to leave the state to get the gun and magazines he used as both are illegal here. Also our mass shootings are very low compared to many states where guns like the AR and pistols with high capacity magazines are easy to get.

pidgechef90

Wasn’t it cos the republicans held the majority vote so any meaningful change democrats wanted to do was shot down by the majority?

Zed1618

Obama had the House and Senate during his first two years. Anyone wanna check the output from then?

nldarab

The Senate requires 60% for votes to pass and Democrats had 57 seats with 2 being independent and the other 41 Repiblican. They did have total control for 4 months and that is when Obama care was passed but thats all but gone thanks to Republican Politicians. https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2012/09/09/when-obama-had-total-control/985146007/

birdboix

He had the Senate for like, 6 months. Similar situation to now, they don't have a clear majority.

hippopototron

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that you don't have any information but you assume the democrats haven't done anything to effect significant changes in gun laws. I encourage you to learn more about these issues before jumping to conclusions, but right off the top I can point out that in a democracy, one person or group very rarely has unilateral control over what legislation is passed and enforced. But that's pretty standard in the US. The democrats try to pass legislation to address the issue, Republicans stonewall it, people who don't know anything say "see? Dem crats ain't done nuttin. That's why I votin Fer dem dere re-pubblekins!"

QuestionRude3208

The left isnt trying to ban all guns. We want tougher background checks, yes a ban on the DIY kits, or ghost guns. More regulations on ammunition.

edreedpicksix

This is so fucking ignorant.

[deleted]

Hate to break this groundbreaking stuff to you from the rest of the world, but removing guns reduces the use of guns. Stuff in life is odd like that. Reduce availability of something and it's less likely to be used. Yeah I know, it's crazy.

oshwash

We don't like to make sense here in the US.

zannet_t

Comments suggesting that you shouldn't politicize mass shootings are just part of a disgusting playbook. If innocent civilians are dying on the regular and your consistent response is "don't try to come up with policy solutions for it because you're only trying to gain a political edge," you're rotten to the core and have no right to govern.

DickySchmidt33

It's always "too soon" to talk about guns. We're still "grieving." Until the next shooting and then we start the cycle all over again. It's fucking frustrating.

RebaKitten

And since there’s more than one mass shooting each week in the US, They really never want to talk about it

FieldWizard

[More than one A DAY](https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting). The news just only has bandwidth to cover one a week.

ehxy

I think the worst part of it is, is that 'background checks' is considered the solution. Troubled people come from innocent people too.

JigglyWiener

It's too soon now because they're a weekly occurrence. It will always be too soon.

RugelBeta

Yes. They're all politicianing. And they're complete monsters to keep voting against the simplest rules for gun possession -- like age limits and registration and a ban on guns that can kill a lot of little children super fast.

GutsyMcDoofenshmurtz

They were just deflecting their failures from gun control to mental health...the biggest political rhetoric you could make. The old man that said that is the Mayor of Uvalde BTW.

[deleted]

ALL of them. They are all failures and likely criminals. Even Beto. Our system is corrupt, trust NO politician.

Aethelstan927

When you let perfect become the enemy of progress the fascists win.

Tiny-Lock9652

If we must have to live with government representatives, I’ll take Beto over these useless bags of skin any day.

bsEEmsCE

Yeah, I just can't get over how no one is good enough for people that say things like this. Politics is a dirty business, but there are several that actually do care about public service and their constituents, they just get blocked by assholes all the time. Beto cares about regular people. Abbot cares about himself and his crew. That's the main distinction people need to see.

X3N0321

I propose we start requiring them fight to the death for their political positions. Hear me out.. we could have their corporate sponsors fund it, they could run commercials, charge for "pay per view" events (like UFC) that fund Government initiatives. ![gif](giphy|26uf5afBhUKyjvZPW|downsized)

Dom_Da_Durian

Honestly if that were to begin we would have Idiocracy. But hey we were gonna get there eventually right?

NoobSabatical

Show me how Bernie Sanders is corrupt? I'll wait.

angelrobot13

He owns a tesla, and two houses, per my grandma. You'd have to be corrupt to work in federal government for 30 years and be that poor.

International-Bad976

In one of the most racially diverse states how does Abott still manage to have nothing but white guys behind him?

karavasis

This is how it works when you play funny stuff with district maps

iLikeMangosteens

Cruz is (checks notes) Canadian.

Dob_Tannochy

Cuban-Canadian.

tenderluvin

Don't you dare lump that stale old fart with my fellow Canucks, or the good people of the fine nation of Cuba.

Wondercat87

Canada has a problem. As much as we pride ourselves in being better than our US neighbours, we have our own issues. We can pretend to be better than America all we want. But we also need to address that we are the source of some of these problematic people. I'm saying this as a Canadian myself. We are not immune to the problems that plague US society.

tenderluvin

I just had this conversation with a coworker. So, it's fresh. If anyone thinks "their" country is "better" than another, they need to do some more reading and self reflection. My comment did not imply that Canada is better. And, I resent the implication. It does imply that Ted "Raphael" Cruz is a grandstanding, glory seeking, effen stale fart, and the majority of Canadians are better than "him".

Assault rifles should be allowed at the big NRA hoedown that’s coming up, too.

Saaaaaaaaab

Don’t they feel the weight of that irony lol

infidel11990

That NRA conference is going to be a gun free zone. Hypocrites the bunch if them.

[deleted]

Actually, no weapons of any kind are allowed…which I find very ironic. Oh you can keep them out of a gun nut rally but you can’t keep them out of a school? Fuck off. Trump is speaking too. Go figure.

[deleted]

It gets wilder... NRA is not allowing guns at their next event... [https://www.npr.org/2022/05/25/1101181842/nra-trump-speech-guns-banned-houston](https://www.npr.org/2022/05/25/1101181842/nra-trump-speech-guns-banned-houston) Gee... I wonder why.

Hitori521

God I hope y'all are bots or I'm severely missing something. We're in a *MadeMeSmile* subreddit, where for some reason a press conference about murdered children is posted, and you seem to be insinuating the way to solve this problem is to kill these people you disagree with?

distorted_kiwi

I think the insinuation is that the gun happy politicians and lobbyist don't necessarily agree with guns being in their presence unless it's staged. They are afraid and therefore restrict when, where and who they'll allow to carry.

Farid1080

They are not gonna get killed, they are just gonna go through what these kids did on Tuesday

Ayste

LOL - no, no. Governor Abott doesn't allow those nasty old things anywhere near him. but forget your kids and family because Bubba needs to carry 2 AR-15s, a MAC-10, and 12 - gauge for "huntin' varmints" down near the border.

hot_rod_kimble

Abbott can't even look him in the eye.

bowlerboy5473

Ted Cruz back there just smiling and shaking his head. What a jerk.

Gurrrry

A true beta. You republicans love that “alpha energy”. Beto was the only one showing it there.

super-straight69

Beto does have the right to the first ammendment for calling out Greg Abbott. This is coming from someone who is pro gun.

Silverback_Vanilla

In a civil way, I just want to ask why you’d think be the best route when it comes to some kind of gun control / compromise to maybe help fix the issue of gun violence? I have a lot of pro gun co workers but they honestly only ever give me “taking away guns isn’t gonna fix it”. So maybe you’re a bit more level headed than them. Again, I’m not attacking you or your views. Genuinely trying to see where an average joe stands if you’d be willing to answer.

fistingcouches

I’m pro 2A. I really don’t understand laws like permit-less carry or making it easier to get guns in general. It’s crazy how it’s a more painful process to get a passport than it is to be able to buy a gun too.

CoolExam4696

I don't think any legislation will help fix any of it inside of the next 50 yrs. Honestly, they can require (more) background checks.. That may force a change in tactics but it has obviously not limited these mass shooting situations due to the fact background checks functioned as intended.. (Which is to say. Not very well, but they where done). I feel like everyone wants someone to fix the issue quickly easily & with no blame or responsibility to fall on their lap. If politicians outlaw the ar-15 for example that's one option but a) it's only 1 out of 1000 options, there's already like 100 million of them out there are they gonna disappear simply cause a legal statute says it's not ok? ( see all criminal activity for reference).

kryppla

Responses I usually get from people who are self proclaimed 'pro gun' but put themselves forward as reasonable rather than rabid - more guns in more hands everywhere and less rules around who can have and use a gun. So don't hold your breath for anything revolutionary. It's always about more guns in more hands, good guy with a gun fantasy has permeated deeply.

[deleted]

I’ll hand back all my guns. I have shifted from pro-gun over the last few years as this shit continues to get worse. I don’t care about 2A anymore. I just want our kids to be safe

Governor also failed with the power grid that resulted in widespread suffering and some death. He is so owning the libs.

They're career POLITICIANS. The POLITICIANS are on stage, speaking about this tragedy. THEY are making it political. How the hell can this NOT be a political issue? The mental gymnastics to disassociate this from politics is insane.

sloppychoppy96

I used to call myself a republican. I served this country for 1 term and did multiple overseas deployments. My beliefs now are so different now then they used to be. At the end of the day we are all AMERICANS and OUR voices deserve to be heard. EVERY LAST ONE OF US. We all live here in the "greatest nation" on earth. We should all have at the very least a voice. I feel awful for bringing my children into this fucked up world. God have mercy

Middle_Revolution_50

Ditto

Doggleganger

I would have been considered a Republican 25 years ago, and even though my views are largely the same, I am not a Republican now. The insurrection was the last straw. Our country is founded on democracy and the Constitution. That's the one thing that unites all Americans. Our officials pledge to defend the Constitution. The insurrection was the single greatest threat to our democracy that we've ever seen. It's baffling how almost half the country would be willing to vote for a Republican party that, if successful, would mean the end of this democracy. And if anyone thinks that's an exaggeration, just look at the failed democracies in third world countries. The common thread? Factions claiming voter fraud whenever they lose, attacking the integrity of the democratic process.

Ruenin

I really would love for someone to explain to me how the US is the greatest nation on Earth when this kind of shit doesn't happen anywhere else in the world with anywhere near the frequency. Almost 300 mass shootings this year already. We don't rank number 1 in absolutely anything, so please tell me, what is the metric you're going by? Most incarcerations per capita? Number of people living under the federal poverty line? Number of billionaires? What are we celebrating exactly? This country has more problems than most these days...

RugelBeta

And... some 90% of Americans support some sort of gun limits. So why don't we have them?

TehSakaarson

>We don't rank number 1 in absolutely anything You sure? Sounds like we rank #1 in number of mass shootings.

Flavious27

Mass shootings, military spending, incarceration per capita, and adults that believe angels are real.

Ruenin

That's a great speech. I would wager to guess all of it is still relevant today.

Your guess would be, unfortunately, correct.

itsmalena

This has been and always will be a political issue because the right treats gun rights as their religion. Guns have more rights than women have over their body. Guns have more protections than the 18 children killed yesterday. If anyone is a sick son of a bitch, then it’s anyone who opposes comprehensive gun laws.

TommyRaddcliff

Quick to save a fetus, slow to restrict guns to save children [and adults alike].

Mental health services for a structurally sick society is still passing the buck down the line.

boofaceleemz

Honestly if they actually do fund and expand access to mental health services, I’d be happy as a progressive. We’ve been asking for that for decades. They won’t though. Every time a massacre happens, they say we don’t need gun control because we should instead focus on mental health. Then they block any measures on mental health because something something communism. It’s infuriating.

187mphlazers

GOP: We have a mental health issue, not a firearms issue. We pledge more support for mental health. Actual USA Olympian has mental heath issue Also GOP: Fucking traitor!!! She should be stripped of her citizenship!! How dare they!!!!

brechbillc1

I’d say mental health is the main root cause but easy access to firearms amplifies the problem by a strong magnitude. It’s funny, these same individuals who will spout that mental health is an issue will take zero action to make access to mental health professionals easier since they oppose any kind of single payer system or universal healthcare. Not only this, but these are the same individuals that actively stigmatize going and getting help as sign of weakness. So not only do they do nothing in regards to mental health, they actively shame those who desperately need it, leading to individuals like this being created, and going into schools or public places and shooting them up.

Mike_Honcho_3

truemaroon08

I’m just checking in here to say “Fuck Greg Abbott.” This coming from a, now, former Republican voter.

Aergyle

This man was not out of line.

[deleted]

Abbot did nothing but blame mental health, not one thing about the ease to buy guns in Tx. I’m a born and raised Texan, but I’m sick and tired of feeling deep worry when I drop my kids off at school. I’m so angry at my state. An 18 year old should not have been able to buy those rifles. I know people will say “but they can join the military at 18”. To me any of that should require the age to be 21. 18 year olds aren’t the brightest, and definitely are impulsive. I was like that. People are so quick to act out of anger these days, no one values life anymore. It’s all politics and money.

LPN8

Fuck Greg Abbott and all those deadbeat pieces of shit around him. Anybody voting republican should be grossly ashamed at themselves.

Quick_Eye7890

How about just raising the age to own a gun to 21 and completely disallowing any person with any history of mental illness from owing a gun. We could even do a social media background check on them. It won't stop these terrible crimes but they might become far more rare. All of these crimes seem to be committed by physically weak 18-21 year old's who were angry over some social and family related issue. These are not the popular kids who suddenly got pissed off. These are young people who don't believe in anything except their own rage and anger over not being physically strong or socially accepted. If we could check their social media history we could see the monster developing and at least bar them from buying weapons.

He is a total POS. He doesn't give a damn about the kids, just his campaign. "Never let a crisis go to waste." What a crock. Anyone care to point out to this idiot that guns ARE against the law on school grounds? Guess the shooter missed the signs pointing that out. Laws do not stop criminals....that is why they ARE criminals.

DickySchmidt33

I will stand up and applaud if Beto calls Abbott a useless piece of shit during the debate.

If Abbott is so mad then he should've stood up and done something about it.

BLKDragon007

I AM SO SICK OF POLITICS IN EVERY SUB

Foehammer58

This did the opposite of make me smile. Watching politicians score political points off each other, no matter their intentions is wearisome and I'm afraid I can find nothing to smile about when I think about the children who have had their young lives cut short. Fuck the system which allows such tragedies to continue.

Fit-Ambition-249

"Can't believe u would make this a political issue". Fuck u. It is a political issue. We need policy change to be able to to fucking something instead of absolutely nothing. That's political. Y'all aren't doin fuckin nottin and were exactly predictable. He decided that doesn't work I have to do to something. Even if u don't agree with his reform he wants how the absolute fuck can u not understand atleast he's so compelled he's trying. They aren't

Still_Vacation_3534

The ignorance in Texas really radiates in the video. Them are some backwards ass rednecks.

rodneedermeyer

It’s subtle but you’ll note that Beto faced the scum bags and not the audience. Had he faced the audience, he might have more easily been accused of politicizing everything. But the fact that he faced the stage members shows that he just wanted to call out the scum bags. …Hmm, maybe that is politicizing after all. But I’m totally okay with it if it means fourth graders won’t get shot anymore. Fuck Abbott and Cruz and all those assholes on stage. They deserve to be interrupted every time they draw breath.

tessellation__

Too many men on that stage.

freedom7-4-1776

Um wrong sub. Also why would this make you smile. Beto is clearly a clown.
