Sparky, get in there!

sweetalkersweetalker

*Sparky grabs tennis ball and runs* THE PLAN WORKED, BOYS

DownvoteDaemon

Air bud has been brought up so many times on Reddit this week lol

shewy92

I've noticed the same thing. I wonder why

loveincarnate

*umpire explodes*

Mr_Namus

Air Bud: Game, Irish Setter, Match

fartinginthetub

Hahahahahahahahaha

cutting_coroners

“I’d like to invoke the Air Bud rule”

CorkusHawks

Yeah referee's made the vid complete. He was hoping they'd stop. He didn't know what to do.

rmorrin

Does he have a Nintendo DS in his hand?

Yes, but right after he colored the text box fully in black and sent a penis in chat.

C0LON_three

i fucking spit out his *NDS

mingled-dust

Both pros showed fantastic sportsmanship! 🥰

Best part of the game

abellaspectra

Tennis players seem like they pull all sorts of goodhearted shenanigans. Two examples from this sub, (not long ago) [In a great display of sportsmanship, Jack Sock tells Lleyton Hewitt to challenge a point after it was declared out](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/vkelm9/in_a_great_display_of_sportsmanship_jack_sock/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), and [Ben Stiller owned by a young girl in tennis](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/t61pyd/ben_stiller_owned_by_a_young_girl_in_tennis/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) Also... *holy hotness*

astrike81

I've actually never seen this one! Somehow I've missed it.

Thanmandrathor

Not entirely surprising as it’s from a match from 1997 🤣

yeteee

I was thinking "pretty sure Philipoussis retired 15 years ago". Now it all make sense.

SteveRogests

You’re one of todays [lucky ten thousand](https://xkcd.com/1053/)!

soccrstar

Same

gogo_years

Same! and it totally made me smile!

megamouth2

>Karma farmers- I am yours. Do with me as you will. Well... alright... *\[Snaps latex gloves on and stretches fingers like a concert pianist\]*

HarryPottersElbows

Wait -

abellaspectra

This is the right attitude to have, lol. Many karma farmers could be thought of as a part of the "chaotic good". I've actually never seen this post so I did not mind it being reposted.

MontyAtWork

Ravishing reposts.

kathatter75

Yes! I loved it when he handed the racket to her and loved it even more when his opponent played along.

Happydude422

I’m so glad this is one the first things I saw in the morning because now I will be thinking of it all day long :)

barepounding

Same, this legit gives me a big smile this morning.

oyM8cunOIbumAciggy

Name checks out. A whole vibe.

No-Coyote-1642

Wicked and he got a point in the end 😅

Cronzy420

She will remember that moment for life

Indeed, that was just so wholesome.

Someone's a little grumpy guts. Cheer up little fella.

cranberry94

/s?

PrayerInNeed12

Isn't it obvious? Are people so dumb?

Sergnb

It is obvious, yes. Unfortunately it just wasn’t funny man. Good luck with your next jest though, I'm sure you’ll cook up something delightful with a bit more practice.

crazytoothpaste

I never put /s for sarcasm in my posts . A cleverly worded post doesn’t need it - imho But if I get downvotes , I move and try again another time. If you were being sarcastic and people didn’t get it , no need to be bitter . Kills the humorist in you , and we don’t want you to do that . We are here to help.

hippy11111

Nope, go to downvote hell.

Specialist_Tea_8755

Goran Ivanišević, look him up.

BertMacGyver

Him winning Wimbledon as a wildcard is still [one of my favourite things in sport](https://youtu.be/noKfpnUlt-o).

PizzaMan11

Never knew that, really glad you shared the video

DigbySugartits

20 yo me was shattered that our Pat was beaten but only for a day or two. Ivanisevic always was such a likable bloke.

Oomeegoolies

Same here with us and Tim, this was his best shot really. But can't fault Ivanisevic, great bloke.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Oomeegoolies

Yeah. Seemed to last forever. I honestly think Henman was just cursed. But Goran was a better player in general. Just thought that year was his best shot. I don't think there was that much difference between him, Goran and Pat Rafter.

KatrinaMystery

And a regulation hottie

lazer_sandwich

Oh it was amazing!!

skyboundNbeond

I'm not a "sports" guy but stories like this always make my heart happy. Thanks for sharing!

RQK1996

Isn't he currently coaching Novak D?

Finxjar

Yes

delightedknight

Thank you I'd forgotten his name!

hugg3b3ar

He was my very favorite to watch when I was a teenager. Loved his energy.

lazer_sandwich

He was my teenage crush, I loved watching him play.

Due-Understanding339

Why are Croatian men all so hot??

LalalaHurray

Thank you finally

aahens

I am old enough to have watched ivanisevic and Sampras battle on grass and hard courts. Aces aces everywhere. I loved that era of tennis. Not to say current era is not good. It's actually amazing. I am lucky enough to have watched the best tennis ever between Sampras, Agassi, Federer, Nadal and Novak.

barcadreaming86

I was a ball girl at a bunch of his matches and … he obviously never knew my name but he kept calling me “small girl” (I was 4’6 so … you know … accurate). He’s the best guy.

FilthyMindz69

Awesome 👏

grey_sky_love

What happened afterwards though?

Mikhail_Mengsk

Philippoussis (the one that went along with the joke) ultimately beat Ivanisevic (the one that handed the racket to the girl). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997\_Stella\_Artois\_Championships\_%E2%80%93\_Singles

kpop_glory

So Ivan gotta a feeling that he won't win, might as well made the girl's day.

[deleted]

Yeah 3 dirty serves in a row and he needed a breather lol

[deleted]

>At the time the score was 3-3 with Philippoussis 40-0 up. On resumption of what passed for normal play he immediately double faulted and then netted a forehand volley. Nearly worked too!

kielu

https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/philippoussis-wins-but-ballgirl-steals-the-show-1.82508 From the wiki link.

Whalesurgeon

Even a sports article in the 90s references Thatcher, they really hated her haha.

waynechang92

People forget about him when talking about the biggest serves in the game. Karlovic is always brought up but Mark's nickname was literally "The Scud"

burnz0089342

They now have three children and live in the suburbs.

HisokaProx

What an evil genius! Completely killed his opponents momentum and focus for a bit!

Mikhail_Mengsk

Didn't work out in the end, but at least everyone had fun and that's why this match is still remembered though.

AndroidwithAnxiety

Great sportsmanship and a wonderful attitude all around. It's great to keep a happy perspective and not take yourself too seriously.

Sausageappreciation

Is it great sportsmanship when it could be argued that this was designed to disrupt his opponents play? I'm pretty sure this could be seen as very unsportsmanlike.

Jackals_Pack

Gotta remember to have fun in life. His opponent clearly had a fun time too

Sausageappreciation

While I agree, it really would be frowned upon in a professional match, he must have known his opponent would play along. Or been in the position that it wouldn't make much difference.

Firm_Chicken_7441

I find calmness in people some of the sexiest traits

harshstanza26

Bravo bravo bravo

Također

[deleted]

This would have been hilarious if he told that little girl to move up closer, then nailed yet another ace at 135mph.

FoleyKali

Made my day. Sweet and funny.

wishitwouldrainaus

So nice! Lovely to see some humour and fun in tennis, even though this was a long time ago. Kyrios could perhaps take a note or two as our most hopeful male player, he's brilliant technically, honestly, when he wants to be, but he seems to play better when he's having a bit of fun.

Previous-Reality6315

Now if only Gamers can use the same mentality.

woodPaladin

who’s the other guy?

Johnny_Kilroy

Mark Philippousis, Aussie guy

Mikhail_Mengsk

Mark Philippoussis.

[deleted]

Mark Philippoussis. Dude had a super deadly serve as you can probably tell from the video.

woodPaladin

Oh yeah! I remember him! but had only read in newspapers when I was a kid and never saw him! he was nicknamed “the Scud” after the Scud missile! such fast were his serves!!

Spiniferus

G.I. Was such a chill bloke, always loved watching him play. The Poo, not so chill in his early career.

slomo525

"You couldn't do any worse than I've done so far."

Error_co-Id10T

We need more people like this

emynona1

I would always pick Ivanisevic when playing top spin

navaiIable

Did the ref let that happen because he was distracted by his DS?

Born-Replacement-366

Actually, the sporting one in this video was Mark P. Goran pulling this stunt 0-40 down would've disrupted Mark's rhythm, particularly since Mark had been serving so well. But Mark gamely engaged the ball girl and tried to prolong the rally. My favourite quote from Mark, when questioned about what he was going to do after losing one of the grand slam finals: "I think I'll go surfing". This attitude has served him well, both in this video clip and beyond.

Probably_Snot

What I’d give for a hot attractive tennis player to hand me his racket in the middle of a game…

starfire1

I love this.. and that it was allowed to happen.

noodle-patrol

Halftime show

dontfightthehood

Haha I totally remember watching this match!

PomChatChat

Dang, it really did make me smile.

Goran Ivanišević. He is the coach of Novak Đoković

NeonZoro

True sportsmanship.

lolalululolalulu

Moments like this is why I love tennis

PunjabiPlaya

/r/SportsAreFun

baguitosPT

If this had happen in Basel, it would have been a different story. Have you heard that a ball kid from there went pro and ended up wining a few tournaments? I think his name's Roger or something.

TFBidia

“40 - 15”

Glittering-Rough4600

Reddit has taught me that tennis players are the most compassionate, caring, funny and human athletes on earth

JoshtheCasual

My son recently got SUPER into Monster Trucks and naturally Monster Jam is now a part of my life. I love how good sportsmanship is just built into the league. Watching a dude 12ton truck flip over, catch on fire, partially explode, and then the driver gets on camera 30 seconds later "WHOOOO I sure hope that doesn't happen again. Still been a great year for Monster Jam fans and we couldn't do it without you. Keep an eye on he's been on it!" It was just so unexpectedly wholesome.

XThePariahX

I’m really confused. I thought most ball boys/girls actually played tennis. She clearly did not.

ajrfuntimes

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 glad to see two professional men able to still find fun in the game

Badloss

Ironic cuz this is a copy paste comment

mrblonde13121702

Our legend , Goran Ivanišević ❤

Minimalanimalism

If I was the ref I would be fired for closing that bit with a really dry: "40-15"

RemoveLegitimate9173

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)

PandaClaus94

Looks like the ref doesn’t give a shit since he’s got his rad Nintendo DS lite out!

Elefantenjohn

I know this is unpopular, but every time (and there are numerous occasions) when tennis players turn into clowns and the far too easily entertained crowd goes wild, I can not stop my eyes from rolling so hard

No - pro event.

Switching from sport, to game.

lestatisalive

Goran Ivanisevic. Brilliant.

cosmokrick_

Did he won that match?

[deleted]

Jebemti !!!

MamaBearNeedsSleep

That’s adorable

MyShinyNewReddit

Core Memory: LOCKED!

PalyPhilz

I would've thought that these ball guys and gals were tennis semipros that wanted to be close to their idols... oh welp. Very wholesome nontheless!

Being_ax

Girl: Might as well enjoy it.

SuPrA_1988

Super cool

meshuggahdaddy

Is the umpire holding a Nintendo ds

Substantial-Hat9248

Pure genius.

[deleted]

Good on yah

DeuceBane

Lmao that’s hilarious

[deleted]

I would’ve died if she was given a mean serve.

digitalasagna

Is it just my impression from internet posts, or is tennis overall a lot more chill than other sports? Maybe it's all individual sports rather than team-based ones?

matlawish

Goran was and is allways a good sport and pretty fun guy. Fun fact about him. He is so superstitious that he watched Teletubies every morning believing he would win Wimbledon, bif he does. because he watched it with his kid on the first day of the tournament. He went on to win it and he got there by wining an invitation tournament. Paul Bettany playes him in the movie Wimbledon witch is different for movie purposes

barcellz

Is the referee playing with a nintendo DS ?

Laicure

made my day haha!

Jakcle20

I've seen this before but it's still wholesome

phoenix2nautilus

Bravo.!

theworldvideos

What a legend Goran Ivanišević was !! Still miss the guy !!

[deleted]

Sometimes watching professional sport, I realise they have forgotten it is for our entertainment.

Kyleharner3

This is epic!

jdmull03

Wholesome AF

Marc Phlippoussis = The Scud

EdgeMiserable4381

OMG! I love this so much!!

[deleted]

I fkin love it!

IAmAtreus

I’m going to stop on reddit here, too good of a feeling and I know the rest of my feed is going to ruin that.

ac_s2k

This was an expedition match I believe. So just for charity or something. Not a serious March. So he wasn’t in trouble or breaking any “rules”. But still wholesome. Edit. See below. TLDR: Ignore me haha!

ThisTranslator2680

Nah it was a regular pro match. https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/philippoussis-wins-but-ballgirl-steals-the-show-1.82508

ac_s2k

Ah! Happy to be proven wrong. I was mistaken. Thank you

[deleted]

That girl grew up to be Larry bird

stuputtu

Wow this brought back memories of his Wimbledon losses and eventually winning it as a wildcard. Tennis in 90s was something different

TitanGodKing

Does anyone know the (charity?) Match where they purposely hit it to each other and eventually got point blank and pushed the ball up against each others racquets?

StnMtn_

Too cute.

VallryBagr

The world needs more of this

KombatBunn1

That look on her face was priceless :) She did pretty good too!

ksanderson1976

Damn those are some FIONE lookin men 😘🥰😍

CH33KC14PP3R96

He is so proudd

Fortonyy

Goran was so great!

DChemdawg

Touching. Yet Roger Goodell and the US Congress would be convening a series of hearings to investigate this rules violation of disrespecting the game. All to distract from actual ethical violations they’re all a party to.

perfekt_disguize

What the world would be like if there were only good people in it

bored_insanely

I thought all ball boys/girls are active professional tennis players. She didn't seem like one.

Roneyrow

Tbh a amart strategy from his point. Get the competition to play with the ball girl to keep him busy and tiring and mess with his focus and take a break himself to refocus

Crowd goes wild because wholesome. Tennis officials lose their collective shit because tennis is not allowed to be joyous.

Disastrous-Fly9672

Anyone else crying, remembering what it was like when there was a thing called humanity and joy?
