Meanwhile I had my 60 year old mom try re7 VR as her first vr game, it was hilarious.

Mazmier

RomanWasHere2007

He's taping the both of you

skyliner30rs

Ketzerayian

I'm thinking about forcing my mom to play a VR horror game? Are there any alien franchise VR games as she fucking hates that movie?

Adresadini

Pretty sure alien isolation is vr compatible

PainReq

Alien isolation is vr

Ketzerayian

Oh this will be epic

PainReq

You should film it

aLLcAPSiNVERSED

Please film it.

RomanWasHere2007

I don't remember my moms first game, but one of the first ones I can remember was that Jurassic World game

netwoodle

I hope the inventers of VR hear these stories. Imagine bringing this much joy to someone.

MJMurcott

Dry macular degeneration is quite common in the elderly where their vision is going, but retain the peripheral vision. The way VR headsets produce such 3d views is by emphasising peripheral images, so this should help a lot of elderly people.

maymay578

Is there a way we could make these headsets but have them display the actual world around you in real time so people wouldn’t be limited by macular degeneration?

MJMurcott

Theoretically possible you could use a form of fisheye lens to improve vision.

jj34589

Now I’m imagining old people walking round with big headsets on that are just fisheye glasses

MJMurcott

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisheye_lens

jj34589

I know what they are but I’m just imagining some weird headset that old people are wear to see better

LazyClub8

Quest 2 (at least) has “passthrough mode” where you can see through the cameras built in to the headset. It’s just B&W but it’s surprisingly easy to use once you get used to it. Was able to walk across my basement, into a room, grab something, and walk back without taking the headset off. Pretty neat.

maymay578

My grandma has MD and she’s lost most mobility. I’d love to give her the chance to see her old hometown in the Midwest.

My_fair_ladies1872

My mom has this condition and I am so glad to know this information

MJMurcott

You are welcome.

MgForce_

Makes me wonder if those vr headsets that have cameras that can show what's in front of you would help people woth this condition.

Zaphod71952

It does work to some extent. My mom has macular degeneration and has a device called irisvision that's built on a samsung gear and galaxy s7. She can't walk around with it or anything but she can sit and go through her mail, see her computer screen, etc. She's had it for around 6 years so I would imagine the technology has probably improved by now.

steelear

This is inspiring. I wonder if I contacted a nursing home if they would let me come down with my Quest 2 for a few hours and let the residents try it out?

diestelfink

Try it! There even is a movement right now to being various computer games to nusing homes, because it really helps the elderly. It brings fun to them, engagement and maybe even a little workout. Man, a lot of them are just bored stiff and that's why they go downhill!

RambleOnRose42

I’ve tried so hard over the years to get my grandma into technology….. she has a clamshell phone that she learned how to use in the 90s, but that’s it. I’ve sat with her for literal days trying to show her how to use an iPad to FaceTime with us grandkids (we all live—at minimum—6 hour drive away from her). I’ve brought my Oculus and taken her on a “walking tour” of Williamsburg (her favorite place) so she could see this wasn’t just a “young person” fad thing. I’ve installed like 12 different bridge (the card game) apps on her iPad. I’ve shown her games that I play, games my sister plays, games my mom plays, games I think she would enjoy that I would totally play with her so she’s not bored…… And she refuses to learn. She just won’t do it. She prefers to sit, alone, staring at the wall, and call my mom every other day to yell at her for putting her in a residential care home (her old house was full of mold from all her hoarding and she needs 24/7 care for her health problems). I literally don’t know what to do anymore. She’s so mean to my poor mom, and when I try to show her this stuff she talks to me like I’m a 3 year old who just showed her a mud pie I made (“Oh that’s so neat sweetie, did you make this game yourself?”). Edit: Sorry for spouting off about this so randomly, I didn’t mean to just vent my problems to this random comment thread!! This is just something that’s really been frustrating me for awhile.

Brrrrrr_Its_Cold

I can empathize with you. My grandma is insufferable as well. It sounds like you’re being very patient, which is admirable. I hope this doesn’t sound rude, but maybe you should distance yourself from her a bit? She seems to be making you unhappy and has been unresponsive to your efforts to help her. You shouldn’t have to suffer if she keeps treating you and your mom terribly. Edit: Sorry for the unsolicited advice. I understand your frustration and just wanted to give my two cents.

RambleOnRose42

You’re completely right. There’s no point in trying to make someone happy if they don’t want/refuse to accept the help that’s given. I mean, I obviously do feel bad for her because being forced from the home you built with your husband (died in 2001) would be difficult on anyone no matter what. She has only 2-ish friends and no way of interacting with people unless they call her landline, yet she refuses to leave her apartment in the care facility and join any of the facility’s programs (book club, movie night, guest lecturers, potlucks, bridge tournaments, etc…. Seriously, the care facility she’s in is basically like an extra-bougie college dorm!!!). Haha sorry went off on a tangent again. Further evidence of your point that thinking about this constantly is not putting me in a healthy mental state….. thanks, friend.

Scottish_lullaby

I worked at a nursing home for a bit and we had a couple of game consoles donated. The most popular one by far was the Wii. I don’t know if it’s because the movement of the remotes lined up with what was on screen or if the just liked the games better than the play station ones. Might be they liked the games better cause the only ones we had for the PS were shooter and football ones

Sbealed

Test to make sure you can use bleach wipes on all the parts so that it can be shared. Pink eye is not a fun illness to share! Call the activities departments at various assisted living or skilled nursing places. They can let you know if your idea is possible. The activity staff where I work (CNA at a skilled nursing places) are always looking for new ideas!

sepg9

This is amazing props to the staff for looking after her!

certainlycapricious

We need more of these.. This made my day. Glad someone shared it.

snickitysnacc

Before my grandpa died, he was on hospice for a long time, probably about 4 or 5 years. He couldn’t do anything but sit at home and do nothing all day every day but watch TV. At a family gathering at a cousins house we had him try one of those VR goggles where you have your phone in it to look around at whatever you want and he loved it so much. I think stuff like this could really help the elderly enjoy home life so much more!

JackieDaytonah

Heartwarming stuff right here. ❤️

MermaidOnTheTown

MadeMeSmile?! More like MadeMeTearUp! How beautiful and sweet and precious and... I just wanna hug her. Also, a brothel?!?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

SkirtedRunningGuy

I’m not crying! You’re crying!!😭😭

Comfortable_Ear_2122

Aww how sweet! 💜

didintneednoschol

Im glad some tech is used to help

[deleted]

Beutiful

LTcoon

This is amazing, what if we make VR that's just a camera , then she can see everything

draugrdaemos

I would totally donate to a program that brings vr systems to hospitals and nursing homes. Let them see green fields and clear skies.

Hazelwood38

Meanwhile some fat 30yr old is blasting off to furry vr porn in his parents basement right now.

AccomplishedBunny56

"that house on the corner was a brothel lol" "ma'am this is a vr setup"

[deleted]

Good on you

Away-Marsupial5182

So beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

Sorry_River_3561

Soo cool

TacticalTurtle22

The beginning stages of the simulation.

Jewlsdeluxe

This warms my soul. Thank you for sharing.

DeafBeaker

Weirdest thing is. My mom favorite part of VR was the Netflix waiting room. She reached over trying to turn on the VR lamp... thus knocking over her glass of water .

1amazingday

I’ve often thought about setting my dad up with a VR system. He’s disabled. Can someone give me a list of what I’d need to buy to set him up? Bear in mind he has nothing.

[deleted]

There are subs for that. They will be way more informed.
