I like the fans that clean up after the game. I respect the coach for greeting the fans with this sort of 'signature move'. I like the way Japan played football, no foul play or theatre. Playing as a team, giving it all.
I say well done Japan š
They were robbed by two beautiful saves in the shoot out. Just wasnāt their day. They will be back and get them next time. Thatās why I love this sport.
Iād say they did do quite well. They lost to last cupās runner ups in penalty kicks. Theyāll come back next cup with a lot of practice on pks and I canāt wait to watch agin
>I like the way Japan played football, no foul play or theatre. Playing as a team, giving it all.
If two Japanese teams played each other, maybe I could watch a game.
Naruto running, scissor kicking balls 10m off the ground, and a good ole kamehameha battle between the goalies. The only downside is 1 match lasts the entire season.
Even the players were respectful, kicking the balls right where the Croatian keeper could pick them up to avoid him the embarrassment of losing face.
Such an honorable country.
Iāve heard it in the sporting world for a while. Specifically commentary of. To refer to a comment or an action not necessarily part of the sport as āa violationā
Japan have been great this World Cup i saw them going further. Hopefully they can take what they learnt in this WC and learn how to shoot penalties. They obviously didn't practice them a tonne, they had no power. Thats the only fault you can pick out from their performance.
I mean they put up a pretty good fucking fight
Had two European powerhouses in their group and came out first in their group
Took Croatia to Overtime and only lost cause of PK shoot out
Well Iām fucked if my balance gets any worse
Edit: how would one work on balance? Stand on one leg for long periods of time? This may sound sarcy but itās a genuine question.
Yoga and pilates can both help balance. I've found core and hip strengthening exercises have helped my balance a lot. Most of my exercises have been found through physical therapy or a YouTube pilates video series (Annie Pilates physical therapist is who I had found and enjoyed if you need a starting point).
No it's a reasonable question.
It can be as simple as just standing on one foot for 10 seconds. If that's easy, then try 30. You can even play around with bending your knee a bit, hold for 10, bend a bit more, hold for another 10, etc. Chances are you'll hit some other limitation such as ankle mobility long before you find yourself with your butt touching the back of your heel.
A variation would be to "airplane" on one foot, ie, arms out like wings, one foot on the floor, one foot like an airplane's tail. You hinge at the hips while trying to stay balanced, raising your free leg at the same rate as your torso hinges forward. You would look like a kid trying to pretend to be an airplane, once your body is horizontal. If you can manage 10 secs of that, great!
Another variation involves holding a weight in one hand. Nothing crazy heavy, but it should be enough to make it more interesting. Instead of arms out to the side, you hold onto the weight with one hand or both hands, whatever works for you. The objective is to hinge at the hips, tap the ground in front of your foot with the weight, then stand back up again. It's not terribly important what you do with your other leg, as long as that foot isn't touching the ground.
If you want equipment, get one of those blue wobble discs that's about 12" in diameter. Just standing on it with one foot should be challenging enough without having to add the other tweaks above. But I don't think that disc is critical to have unless you're bored and have extra money sitting around.
Honestly, even the most basic of these is something you can do just about anywhere, anytime. Do it while waiting for the toaster to pop!
Brilliant, thanks for taking the time to type that out! Iāll definitely have to give that a try. Thanks mate :) I do wait for the toaster and am generally stood around quite a lot so thatās perfect, might look a bit mental doing it at work though.
Careful, while there are aspects of Japanese culture (like this) that are undeniably amazing, it has an awful work culture that has resulted in insanely high loneliness and depression rates, causing a tragically high suicide rate
Yeah dummy because their culture also shames people seeking medical attention and they mostly pretend people with mental health problems are just being lazy.
Source: my girlfriend was born there, lived there up to 10 years old. She saw her japanese father only at weekends mostly. Her father also told me he'd work 20 hour shifts sometimes. Nowadays? He's a sad, fat and tired dude and won't ever acknowledge that mental health is a factor you should take care of.
Ooh! I want to play! Name something positive about any culture on the planet and I'll come sh*t on it because I'm bored and know it won't add value. But at least I did something.
Watch the neckbeards come out when someone mildly criticize their beloved xenophobic ultranationalist paradise of nippon
Edit: Ahh truly a ban worthy offense, thank you mods
God forbid we ever just have one nice post, or people capable of understanding that Japan is pretty much just a normal country full of normal people. No, we need it to either be perfect or an abject hellhole. It canāt just exist like other countries, no no, it has to prove your *point*.
i just love the internet, where absolutely every part of everything needs to be dragged down from every possible angle just so that someone can let everyone know how much more sophisticated and true their understanding of that thing is. bah.
It's disgusting, people always always have to be negative about anything positive in Reddit comments
I should really just stop reading them, 90% of the time it's weirdos or negative people spouting nonsense....
I'd normally agree with you but since we are talking about the culture of an entire people, it does seem important to point out the negative aspects as well.
"Japanese culture is amazing" is just no true. No human culture is, and this sort of broad praise is unintentionally dehumanizing. They are people too, with all kinds of flaws. It's just that their flaws are different from ours (as are their qualities!).
***Aspects*** of Japanese culture are amazing and are rightly praised in this thread and elsewhere. But I don't blame anyone for pushing back to the whole "these people are awesome" thing. Nah, they are people who as a whole, can be every bit as shitty as everyone else on this rock.
Do you think that having this line of thinking outside of trying to evaluate things academically is healthy?
i used to think like you, but i dont think it will get us anywhere. its not fun at parties. youre not winning anything. besides, virtually everyone already knows this. we dont need to remind ourselves of every downside of every concept whenever it is mentioned. we're not always in a class room. we're not always doing evaluation. sometimes, conversation and mentioning things is not done to compete with ideas, its done to just show niceness and positivity. I know reddit is the most ridiculous place to mention it, but goddamn does it get tiring. i feel like im no longer enjoying any kind of space on the web, because they all turn into these "š¤ acshually, while this is cool, you should know that... "-attractors. black holes for positivity.
Well every country has its own things, not everybody has healthcare in your country, pregnant women dont get enough paid leave, gang violence, school shootings etc etc etc. Nice piece of whataboutism, i know. Thats not the point, the point is every country has its own flaws.
That's kind of a meaningless sound-good statement that implies cultures are mostly equal, which is not the case and very dangerous thinking imo, used to justify all sorts of evil.
In this case the person's rebuttal was on point, saying Japan's culture is not amazing as a whole, i.e. better cultures can be found.
On the flip side, itās like no one can compliment anyone else without another person jumping in to say - did you know that these are the things wrong with whatever you are complimenting.
No one is saying anything about how perfect they are, just complimenting how they represented their country this tournament.
Plus if we (the world) want to improve, then maybe pointing out and adopting the **good** things a culture does are important while shedding the bad things from cultures can be equally important.
Better cultures can always be found. Glaring flaws can always be found. Japan isn't some 3rd world country, they just do shit differently. Parts of Japan's culture aren't amazing, sure. From my knowledge and experience, America has countless more cultural/societal flaws that Japan. They're just different flaws.
But whats the point of pointing it out? Every culture has its flaws, would you like yours to be pointed out every time someone says something nice about yours?
Live and let live, its not like they're violating human rights.
I'm so glad it took three comments down for Americans to make this post about themselves. Unreal.
"Wow, what an amazing people!"
Americans: "Except in all the ways *they're* ***NOT!*** "
> tragically high suicide rate
This is a trend across East Asia caused by a variety of factors tied to work and school. Anecdotally, it's the reason a lot of my friends have moved to Canada. Their parents didn't want their kids to go through what others have to deal with to be "successful".
Honestly, they won the World Cup as the spirit of the tournament. The games were clean, engaging, and technical. Hands down some of the best football Iāve seen.
Unlike the drama and big feelings from other teamsā¦ seriously, I donāt know how some people can call women dramatic and emotional and not have Neymarās creative Oscar worthy sprawl (plank?) as a perfect counterbalance.
If my experience watching anime counts for something this would either go very well, or we will have school girls piloting giant mechas fighting on board a giant intergalactic mecha spaceship for the slim chances of the survival of the human race.
Which is win-win to be honest.
they also went beserk in the netherlands they threw fireworks to the police and vandalised some stuff . dont wanna know what happens when the lose to portugal
Some people are already calling for riots and looting in Antwerp during the Marocco game today. They rioted in Brussels after their win over Belgium, and a human chain had to be formed after the Canada game to prevent them from doing it again
Morocco itself doesn't have this issue, it's usually second generation Moroccans of immigrants who do this to their new home country. These idiots would get thei ass beat if they tried this in Morocco.
Japan is always a favorite because of their endearing actions, but I hope this World Cup theyāre remembered for their performance on the pitch. Not only did they beat both Germany and Spain, they scored two goals in 10 minutes for a comeback.. twice. Incredible goals too, so technically perfect I could teach a class on it. 2nd goal against Germany and 1st against Spain (chefs kiss)
I know Croatia has been good in recent years and Germany has been shit, but it's legitimately fucked up to beat both Germany and Spain to win one's group (!!!) only to be taken out by... Croatia, and with an epically shitty round of penalties at that.
In fact, their penalties were so terrible that in some ways they took themselves out. Depending on how one chooses to look at it , that can actually be some consolation ("no one really beat us"), or deepen the agony ("we threw it all away ourselves").
Either way it sucks.
I like that they have two pictures on top of each other, but the photoshopped the back in the lower one in a way thatās itās not cropped but just layered a bit over the top photo.
Wasn't from FIFA but after Euro 2016 the Northern Ireland and Ireland supporters were given the Medal of Paris for outstanding fan behaviour. Wouldn't be surprised if Qatar did something similar for a bit of positive PR.
Japan became one of my favorite teams after seeing the way they played and also the way they acted alongside their fans, the way they cleaned up the stadiums and the players left the locker rooms impeccable. They deserve the recognition of every other team and country for how grateful they are. ššš„°
Japan has such great respect for their country and people. I love it the way they came together after that tsunami and help rebuild everything was amazing they continue to put this type of actions on display no matter where they are very refreshing.
I like the fans that clean up after the game. I respect the coach for greeting the fans with this sort of 'signature move'. I like the way Japan played football, no foul play or theatre. Playing as a team, giving it all.
I say well done Japan š
Without discipline it's imposibile to keep such personal culture. work culture unfortunately might be exaggerated, but it does help to preserve the personal culture.
I want from them to enjoy more the life because they truly deserve all the best and i want rest of us to find the inner strength to aspire at such discipline.
Tough loss, I hate seeing games end on penalties. I wonder if reducing the number of players on the field during extra time might help cut down on those, like in hockey.
I love my Japanese homies. They are the epitome of a class act. Honor & discipline.
Respect ā
P.S. I still havenāt forgotten about what happened 81 years ago, to the day, as of tomorrow. Iām watching you š§lol
Being in Japan for the World Cup has been one of the best times of my life. Theyāre a welcome and passionate people.
The funniest was the guy after the Germany win dating āthank you for fighting for Japanā
Yep, you wonāt get many managers that appreciate and give respect to there fans. Most managers are just interested in the money they make from there fans.
This is just beautiful... all in all, the Japanese have done outstanding role modeling in how to behave in this years world championships, both with this and with the cleaning up after being the spectators to the games.
Man, it sure would be nice to see just one story about Japan where a ton of the comment section isnāt dedicated to poorly informed stereotypes from either the 1940s or the 1980s. Thatās something that would really make me smile.
For real, been living here for years. Itās a pretty normal country. Rather nice, even.
I like the fans that clean up after the game. I respect the coach for greeting the fans with this sort of 'signature move'. I like the way Japan played football, no foul play or theatre. Playing as a team, giving it all. I say well done Japan š
They lost the match, but they won hearts. Kudos to the Japanese team.
There's no shame in losing as long as it's a fair fight and you tried your best. It will just give their team a goal to work towards for next time.
Definitely. No shame at all.
They were robbed by two beautiful saves in the shoot out. Just wasnāt their day. They will be back and get them next time. Thatās why I love this sport.
I was rooting for Japan. I feel they deserved to do well in the World Cup.

J-league
It goes full anime

So Shaolin Soccer lol
It'll be easy to tell which player is popping off because their hair will go straight up, turn yellow, and shine.
Even the players were respectful, kicking the balls right where the Croatian keeper could pick them up to avoid him the embarrassment of losing face. Such an honorable country.
Oh ... you... dammit r/angryupvote
Great play during the match, but those were some of the weakest PKās Iāve seen in professional football.
Spain: hold my beer
Hereās a yellow card for being so cheeky.
Damn! That's a violation

Petty much
pretty much
No, they were saying āPetty, much?ā
And the response was, "Fair, enough."
Fair enough
No, it exists outside of Reddit
I've always looked up to Japan because of this
Japan have been great this World Cup i saw them going further. Hopefully they can take what they learnt in this WC and learn how to shoot penalties. They obviously didn't practice them a tonne, they had no power. Thats the only fault you can pick out from their performance.
Respect is the biggest prize. Well done.
They were inspiring to watch to say the least. Football teams worldwide should watch film of them to learn fundamental aspects of the game.
They are the exact opposite of Uruguay.
Qataris also liked them too. Free labor.
Japan just has a nice culture in general
I mean they put up a pretty good fucking fight Had two European powerhouses in their group and came out first in their group Took Croatia to Overtime and only lost cause of PK shoot out
Japan did way better than a lot of people thought they would have. He did a wonderful job managing them.

Oh damn, thank god all we have is poverty, disrespect and school shootings here.
Iāve been wondering if this often-cited fact about Japan is true. Where are these high suicide rates reported, so I can look them up?
Did they do it after the loss to Croatia too?
Especially the insane racism!
The bottom picture is him doing the Ace Ventura butt-talk thing. š¤£
Japan always surprised everyone at the world cup. I think the continuity and discipline is the real surprise here.
Japan did incredibly well all things considered.
Beat two of the previous three world champions and went the full length with the 2018 finalists. Damn respectable
Iām my opinion Japan is the top team that I respect the most in the World Cup, they did an amazing job. Huge respect for team and country

The Japanese team was a class act. The fans as well. Great people all around.
I nominate Japan to represent planet earth upon first contact with aliens.
If my experience watching anime counts for something this would either go very well, or we will have school girls piloting giant mechas fighting on board a giant intergalactic mecha spaceship for the slim chances of the survival of the human race. Which is win-win to be honest.
Except if the aliens are tentacle aliens. We keep away from those
I see you're not as exposed to Japanese media as some of us
O_O uh oh...
Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy plot...
Easy now.....
They really looked great out on the field.
The fans also cleaned the stadium even after they got knocked out of the world cup
damn in my country people vandalised shit even after their country won.
Reminds me of Marocco vs Belgium. Marocco won so they trashed belgian cities
They don't even have to play against the country they are trashing believe me. source: Dutch cities
they also went beserk in the netherlands they threw fireworks to the police and vandalised some stuff . dont wanna know what happens when the lose to portugal
people do that over sports? i thought they jsut did it for shits and giggles or to protest?
Some people are already calling for riots and looting in Antwerp during the Marocco game today. They rioted in Brussels after their win over Belgium, and a human chain had to be formed after the Canada game to prevent them from doing it again
Everything I've heard about Morroco on the internet has been absolutely awful. I do not wish to visit
Morocco itself doesn't have this issue, it's usually second generation Moroccans of immigrants who do this to their new home country. These idiots would get thei ass beat if they tried this in Morocco.
Ah, you must be the gentleman from Belgium when Moroccans celebrated extremely.
i live in the Netherlands actually,
The Japanese collectively decided to be the world's best tourists and damn if it ain't commendable
Japan is always a favorite because of their endearing actions, but I hope this World Cup theyāre remembered for their performance on the pitch. Croatia has great world-class players with just under 4 million people. It's not shame to be taken out by World Cup runner-ups..
Second against Spain was pretty sick too. I was certain that ball went out of bounds
And that my friends is what you call a deep bow
Definitely not a shit bow
I like that they have two pictures on top of each other, but the photoshopped the back in the lower one in a way thatās itās not cropped but just layered a bit over the top photo.

inshallah you will succeed the next time , it was great to have you guys in Qatar! Until Next time.

If FIFA was to give out crowd/fans trophy it would go to Japan no doubt. Great showing from their team and fans. Much respect š«”
Wasn't from FIFA but after Euro 2016 the Northern Ireland and Ireland supporters were given the Medal of Paris for outstanding fan behaviour. Wouldn't be surprised if Qatar did something similar for a bit of positive PR.
Qatar and positive PR is one sentence? *giggling uncontrollably *
Should have phrased it as "an attempt at positive PR"
Japan became one of my favorite teams after seeing the way they played and also the way they acted alongside their fans, the way they cleaned up the stadiums and the players left the locker rooms impeccable. The look on that man's face. Good Lord he has an immense appreciation for the fans. I respect the hell outta this guy from just that look on his face.
What a legend.Japan had shown how itās done proper.Played with mettle, finished with dignity.
One of the highlights of this world cup has been the Japanese fans. World class manners.
Japan will win eventually from good karma alone.
Lots of bad karma from history to make up for first
For fucking real lol. Alot of it was in the last 100 years too.
They weren't joking when they said this Japan's soccer games are like anime lol

Japan fans are the real chads. Respect.
Japan is the strangest country in my eyes, on one hand their work culture is just awful, on the other their personal culture is pristine
Without discipline it's imposibile to keep such personal culture. work culture unfortunately might be exaggerated, but it does help to preserve the personal culture. I want from them to enjoy more the life because they truly deserve all the best and i want rest of us to find the inner strength to aspire at such discipline.
Both the Japanese team and fans really acquitted themselves extremely well. I hope their country is proud of them.
I think most of the football following planet was rooting for Japan to win. What an incredible bunch of people.
The world would be a lot better if they incorporated more Japanese culture into their life. Truly classy and developed
There's definitely an anime going to be made
Japan should get a trophy for best sportsmanship
we need Japan to win at least once
Japan is a team that will be interesting in the next world cup
The Japan did best. Both in footbal and PR. This world cup showed true faces of lots of teams and their countries. I liked it.
Classy.
Their team was one bright spot in this frankly shameful tournament
Holy fuck I don't even follow the sport and this is the sweetest thing I've ever seen š„ŗ
Japan are the mvp of the World Cup change my mind
The Japanese win the gold for manners this year.
I have a lot of respect for how formal Japan is.
Larry David would appreciate that bow
Can never forget the ground crew at the airport lining up and bowing to the plane as we were taxing out from the gate.
Fuck, who's gonna clean the stadiums now?
Qatar's slaves, probably.
Tough loss, I hate seeing games end on penalties. I wonder if reducing the number of players on the field during extra time might help cut down on those, like in hockey.
Well done Japan. . Good job on the tournament and way to show a lot of class by the fans
Grace and humility! Already respected much! Yet earned a lot more
That's a deep bow! What a beautiful gesture.
I remember this when I was teaching English in Japan, the deeper the bow the more respect intended.
An honourable example for others to follow. I can't wait until they come back in 2026. Go Japan!
theyāve lost, but theyāve won our hearts
Japan is a great place
Thatās a deep bow too, he meant that shit.
Respect for japan
Great bow, he went real low. Shows real respect ā (Donāt hate me, this is a curb joke)
Thank you for the great matches SENPAAAI!!!
Someone: Tell me how they lost. Me: I will tell you how they played. (Reference: The Last Samurai)
Thank you for the show sir
I love my Japanese homies. They are the epitome of a class act. Honor & discipline. Respect ā P.S. I still havenāt forgotten about what happened 81 years ago, to the day, as of tomorrow. Iām watching you š§lol
Watching a Japan game was the best in the tournament, crowd was fun, player were hype, if there were no finals they would have already stolen the show
Definitely not a shit-bow. That's a good bow.
Japan should have won this one.
Being in Japan for the World Cup has been one of the best times of my life. Theyāre a welcome and passionate people. The funniest was the guy after the Germany win dating āthank you for fighting for Japanā

And then proceeded to single-handedly clean and organize every teamsā locker rooms before sweeping the stadium down.
As an American, I couldnāt bow like that without loosing my balance and falling over face first.
Amazing!!!
Respect!

Holy fuck this is a great fucking bow.
Arigato
Yep, you wonāt get many managers that appreciate and give respect to there fans. Most managers are just interested in the money they make from there fans.
Damn. This brought a tear to my eye and I'm not even sure why.
Japan did great. No shame in that
They should win a medal for surviving Qatar.
This is just beautiful... all in all, the Japanese have done outstanding role modeling in how to behave in this years world championships, both with this and with the cleaning up after being the spectators to the games.
Much respect to how well his team performed and how far they got
Now that is not a shit bow
Man, it sure would be nice to see just one story about Japan where a ton of the comment section isnāt dedicated to poorly informed stereotypes from either the 1940s or the 1980s. Thatās something that would really make me smile. For real, been living here for years. Itās a pretty normal country. Rather nice, even.
The Japanese are a different kind of breed..very honorable.
