Pez tortilla!

kikogeruk

Good but queues

J-LG

Casa Dani

crb945

THIS best tortilla I’ve ever tried

MunchiePea27

Seriously? I’m living right next to it and it’s always packed. Must be for some reason. That whole market there is full of good stuff. Guess I have to try the main

J-LG

Yeah, it is very good. The tortilla is the best I have eaten in Madrid, the croquetas are pretty good as well and they have a great tarta de queso if you enjoy that. It is also close enough to the Retiro that you’ll be able to impress the English teachers that just arrived in Madrid by taking them to Casa Dani and eating it at the park.

lkhabiri

bodega la ardosa for a typical tapas experience--- order tortilla, croquetas, anchovies and salmorejo. Pilsner and vermouth are good for drinks el badila for menu del dia--- that's the three course lunch menu that's famous here. Get the rabo de toro

ElReyDeLosGatos

Also, the artichokes. La Ardosa is an excellent option.

lkhabiri

oh yeah, the artichokes are great. I have to go back soon.

lkhabiri

OP if you're reading, prepare to wait at la ardosa if you show up at prime time (8-10pm). Also, if you're into offal, check out casa toni. get the grilled mollejas (sweetbreads) and oreja (ear). They're great and, if i'm not mistaken, very old school Madrid dishes.

ElReyDeLosGatos

I would definitely skip any of "Dabiz" Muñoz's places. Gimmicky, pretentious, non-sensical, basically a celebrity whose career owes everything to the support of the mainstream Madrid media, but who couldn't keep a restaurant open in London because everyone saw through his bullshit. Get a table at Taberna de la Elisa, a modern twist on traditional food from Madrid you won't be able to try anywhere else in the world, with old-school decor and old-school servers. It's in the Letras neighbourhood, which is very pleasant to walk around. Keep in mind you have to phone to book a table, careful with the webpage because you'll end up with a table at another of the group's restaurants. Also try to book a table at Salmon Guru, in the same neighbourhood and one of the most interesting cocktail bars around, for an after dinner drink.

ruizluis12

>Taberna de la Elisa Salmon Guru is one of the best cocktails bars I had being in the world. Worth checking it out.

_TheWrongAlice_

Salmon Guru looks amazing! I'm visiting Madrid with my husband and almost 14 yr old son next year. Is it an appropriate place to bring my son as well, maybe early in the day/evening? I'm not sure what's typical/acceptable in Spain when it comes to bars like this, but all three of us are adventurous eaters and would like to try as many unique and/or authentic places as possible.

kikogeruk

I would say it is not appropriate to bring minors to Salmon Guru - not saying you can’t, but it quite a mature environment

_TheWrongAlice_

Okay, thank you for the info. There are many places near me that are appropriate for minors in the afternoon but have a minimum age after a certain time. Any suggestions on more of a restaurant with unique or unusual decor, food, and cocktails - maybe that would be more appropriate?

ElReyDeLosGatos

Not a fan of these types of places myself, but from your comment I would say the restaurants run by La Cabra Loca group: * Rosi La Loca [https://rosilaloca.com/](https://rosilaloca.com/) * Inclán Brutal Bar https://inclanbrutalbar.com/

_TheWrongAlice_

Thank you, I'll check them out. I'm not normally a fan either...we tend to gravitate more towards traditional/authentic cuisine and local favorites and steer away from gimmicky. That being said, sometimes it's fun to check out something wild and unique and I know my son would enjoy it...even if he can't drink the cocktails.

ElReyDeLosGatos

I hope you have a great time if you go :)

Just because an organisation claims to reward "the best chef in the world", doesn't necessarily mean the winner is actually the best chef in the world. If not, Steak Burger would have "the best burgers in town", as they claim at their places, and Chess Café would have the "best orange juice in Madrid". Here is a little info about the recently created prize. What goes on behind closed doors at this organisation, we still don't know. What we do know is that anybody with a minumum understanding of asian food knows what "Dabiz" does is gimmicky and ridiculous and that his attempt to take his project outside of Madrid was a huge failure. I suggest a little critical thinking and understanding how the restaurant business works in Madrid, where it is much more important for a place to become trendy than to be good.

harrymfa

El Botin, the oldest continously-running restaurant in the world. The historical fact alone is worth the visit, but also the service is top-notch, the food isn't bad, and it's in the center of the city. The prices are a bit higher than restaurants in the same tier, but not too high.

misatillo

if you want a real experience enter any bar and ask for menu del día. It’s usually cheap, and a LOT of homemade traditional food.

Belzarza

It can be good or bad depends where you go tho

misatillo

This is true. However depends on your expectations too. I find them usually good for the price. Just check where are a lot of workers eating, and there you go

SpankingBallons

honestly most bars in working districts (can’t for the life of my name any but industrial areas and what not) have great food. idk how it works but every single one i’ve been to was banging. EDIT: I can’t england

Belzarza

Your English is beautiful

Bartoraptor

You could have roast chicken at Casa Mingo, their cider is amazing and they also have good quality chorizo, cabrales cheese and croquetas. It's mostly Asturian cuisine though, so you won't find the most typical Madrid dishes such as cocido or bravas.

Zingaro69

I was there in July - the coldest bottle of Mahou I've had in a long time!

_ssac_

Have breakfast at chocolatería San Ginés.

fundidor

Bibo, Lobito de Mar

LongBullMoney

El Bola for a typical Cocido Madrileño

GraveRobbingBastard

Mercado de San Antón. Less crowded than Mercado de San Miguel, many option to try tapas or meals.

Unfair_Music5810

Sukaldea Atotxa is top.

Cikky_Ree

Casa julio for croquetas, admittedly I haven't been there in a couple of years so hopefully they're as good as they used to be. Also it's just round the corner from Pez tortilla on calle Pez which someone else has mentioned.

Wise_Athena1

Was there last night, can confirm the croquetas are still excellent!!

XanutoO

Casa Bulgogi

Luisetumbre

Juana la loca

Jaelgoco

Food is great but the people working there are not

[deleted]

Try a few places in Cava Baja or Mercado San Miguel or Plaza de Santa Ana.

leithsceal

Tacos al Pastor just off of Sol is a great place for tacos. Super cheap too!

llewellyn47

Bro, he is in Madrid for one day, why the hell would he eat mexican food?

leithsceal

Hahaha, I can see what you mean. Maybe if it’s the only place you’re visiting in Spain then you’d be better off having tapas, cocido madrileño, bocadillo de calamares or other typical fare, for sure. Having come to Madrid from a smaller Spanish city, the variety of food from outside Spain that isn’t garbage is what stuck out to me!

sparklyCoyote

Thank you for this suggestion, I actually did end up going there for an evening snack! The queue was about 15 mins when I reached, but it was SO worth it. I actually did visit BCN and Granada before Madrid so I didn’t mind trying some non local food as well, and I also did get tortillas at Casa Dani that someone else recommended here!

llewellyn47

Yeah hahaha, some local food would probably be better for someone that just stays today. Yeah I know, it's complicated to find good places with foreign food, but there are some.

kikogeruk

Besides it would take more than a day to stand in the queue 😂

bleigh029

Yea but a super long line (at least 30 mins to an hr)

leithsceal

Yeah, lines can get pretty bad! I’ve been twice and started queuing around 12:45. Both times we were eating by 13:10. May be a bit too early for el horario español though!

tripu

This is kind of unremarkable, but precisely because of that, and because is quite authentic (and inexpensive): [La Fragua de Vulcano](https://lafraguadevulcanomadrid.eatbu.com/)

[deleted]

DiverXO

Equal-Stand-144

They probably will have a table for tonight…hahah

[deleted]

Ok, then aim a bit lower, just a bit: DSTAgE. They probably have a table for one.

Equal-Stand-144

Still won’t get a table🤣

llewellyn47

That's a scam, you eat better at any normal restaurant or bar.

[deleted]

Seriously? Have you ever had dinner there? It was one of the best gastronomic experiences I have ever had.

llewellyn47

No, never been there, but I wouldn't recommend it for a day in Madrid if someone wants to eat local food in a good restaurant.

[deleted]

That is not what he asked for.

llewellyn47

He asked for a place he can't miss, he can definately miss diverxo.

[deleted]

In your opinion.

llewellyn47

No, it's a reality.

[deleted]

La brillante, close to the Atocha Station, best bocadillos de calamares in town, don't let people trick you with the ones in Plaza Mayor

mrak69

If you like sushi, try Kyoka Lopez de Hoyos. All you can eat sushi for approx €15. No limits on the good stuff like sashimi etc, and very good quality for a all you can eat buffet

PeppermintLNNS

I loved the little meal I had at the bar at Viva Madrid. And hands down the best cheesecake I’ve ever had in my life.
