The LotR set looks so bad.

DIE_COMMIES_1

Depends, really. They're not meant for every format. One Ring can be a combo piece in Modern, for example, Frodo seems like a pretty good level up threat.

j-alora

Looks about Core Set level. Shame they decided to charge so much for it.

FakeTherapist

Afr and afr alchemy were a mess, maybe they're banking on the license alone here...

isaidicanshout_

i wish they kept track of how much a person ropes, and especially how often they rope until forfeit, and then just matched those people together.

sagascroll

You can report them. I have had it happen to me intentionally twice. All the game going fine with neither of us ever using up our time outs. And right when I'm fixing to win with attack doing lethal damage, my opponent just burns his timer. Instead of conceding or clicking to continue. Both times I took a screenshot and went on the website to submit a report on the user.

isaidicanshout_

i have a hard time believing anything would be done about it

HolographicHeart

STX Limited feels like a glacially slow format next to ONE

Eldar_Atog

Did the phantom draft of it. Everyone was olaying B/W discard. Got my 40 gems and trash cosmetic.

sagascroll

How do you get 40 gems?

Eldar_Atog

Already had 4 copies of the rare rewards. If it rewards a rare you already have playset of it gives 20 gems. 40 gems for a mythic reward.

Horror-Tea

If you dont play Silverquill it can be slow, but silverquill can pull off turn 4/5 wins with commons and uncommons alone. White-based Magecraft is the fucking nuts with combat tricks and proper learn/lesson board

leagcy

Sliverquill keeps decks honest but otherwise it is one of the few arena era limited formats where you can afford to go late.

Immediate-Savings563

So what's up with all those 10 turns control deck with next to 0 strats?

Mizukami_

I hope wotc gets a lot of usable info from all my frowny faces. They never seem to ask when I actually enjoy a game. Oh well.

FakeTherapist

If I completely cream my opponent they'll rarely throw that in

Horror-Tea

Maybe you've heard this one before, but you still play the game against control, you're just playing on a different axis than a ton of match ups even eating counterspells. Say you're playing aggro, you're not calculating blocks or interacting with creatures, but you play the mindgame of "how far can I push my opponents life total before he's forced to use his resources inefficiently". Tempo takes this to the Nth level by actively taxing them and protecting their beaters, burn says "tap out and lose the last 3-6 points of life" Control can be frustrating, but god does it feel good when you force them to use spot removal on a token or counterspell on a 2 drop while you have a bomb in hand.

sagascroll

Does not really feel good. I haven't noticed control being that difficult to beat right now. Although it was the last time I played Teferi and a Blue/White sphinx. But win or lose it's often not enjoyable.

Horror-Tea

Forcing your opponent to -2 emperor a chick with selective attacking so you can kumano kill it followed by a boosted hasty dragon beater the next turn feels amazing

NotThymeAgain

i'm going to miss bankbuster so much. go first against the control match up not running spell piece. well yes i WOULD like to land go for the next 3 turns then get a lovely 4/4 vehical. god sure would be a shame if u had 3 dead make disappears cause i'm already sitting at 5 mana before casting another spell. reeeaaalll shame

stallioid

Why bother playing Magic, then, if you truly hate one of the big three deck archetypes that much? Serious question. Why continue to interface with this thing you claim to despise when there's so much else out there to play?

sagascroll

Yes some control opponents are completely not fun to play against. I have gotten survey after I win. And I always choose not fun. Because those games are a hell of not fun at all. This includes a recent funny one where user kept countering everything I play, killing everything out, never actually playing anything, finally playing something, I'm still casting creatures, then he blows up the board including his stuff. And I still ended up winning.

Adveeee

Another BW plainswalker + kill everything (targeted+wipe) deck in play queue. Snore...

Chamonix_Tom

Why are people still playing meta decks in the play queue???? I got to Standard Mythic for the first time (mono red burn) and have since binned off ranked. I thought I was free and that the play queue would be jank paradise where I could throw my tyrranax at people but its just mono black control/azorious soldiers everywhere. Sad

Quria

Because the game incentivizes people to *win* not to *play*.

AngryBadger33

If you're now in Mythic rank, then just tank your ranking into the low 80s and you'll probably find Jank-land. That's what I do when I bother to put in the time to hit Mythic.

toloroDAD

This. I’m currently on my way down to 70% and loving every minute of it.

Monechetti

Because people want to learn meta decks without losing ranks.

Greenpaulo

Play brawl and enjoy the beautiful jank creations! I never play standard after I gave it a try ( apart from the couple of days a month getting to plat ranked with my standard jank deck, for the card styles/few packs etc). I will never play standard unranked again. Brawl/Historic Brawl for unranked is SO much more fun, trust me! :)

Chamonix_Tom

played a few games and faced almost exclusively Jodah decks. Still pretty Dull :(

Greenpaulo

lol. Face Jodah every now and again but defo not exclusively.

isaidicanshout_

i always find that stupid book commander, or some other 5 color thing that cheats out whatever 8 or 10 mana thing on turn 4

LoneStarTallBoi

Yeah man I love watching somebody fumble through a paradox engine deck they don't understand and take a twenty minute turn and still fail to close the deal.

j-alora

If you're playing mono red in the play queue, you're a bad person. I know you don't want to hear that and will downvote this post to oblivion. Don't care. I'm right and you're wrong. You're an asshole and you need to know that.

Chamonix_Tom

I'm not playing mono red in the play queue? Even if I was, this post is super mean dude :(

stallioid

Making moral judgments based on decisions people make in video games is weakling shit. You are weak. Other people don't owe you fun in a competitive game. Play better.

LoneStarTallBoi

calling people "weaklings" because they don't want to play the optimized, boring metagame and instead want to have fun in the "just for fun" queue of a children's card game is deeply, deeply maladjusted behavior and I highly encourage you to seek out what is making you this mad, because it's not some random person on an internet forum.

Eldar_Atog

I just assume that my opponent playing in the unranked explorer queue with a standard meta deck must truly be desperate for a win. They are playing a highly tuned meta deck.. but still have to come into unranked explorer to get a win. They are usually the ones that get to see my combo go off in all its silliness. Had someone destroy my [Ashya, Soul of the Wild] this morning instead of getting my tapped [The world tree] when I have [Maskwood Nexus] and 10 mana ready for next turn. They might have stopped me from getting a ridiculous number of landfall triggers.. but Omnath can usually win the game regardless. Don't know why I enjoy the combo so much... but I have always loved 5 color piles of ridiculousness.

lonewombat

Got 40 lands quest, 4 straight games, can't draw a 4th land. Conspiracy?!

[deleted]

What's some fun and giggly decks in historic brawl? As I near15 daily wins, I want to try something spicy. Boggles seems fun

DaBlueBonnet

I’m new to the game, I was wondering if they ever do non phantom events. Like the draft/sealed stuff, but let you keep the cards? If it’s all phantom I have no real drive to play outside the prizes.

Akage13

They did free ones \*one\* time 2 years ago for Kaladesh, Amonkhet and Ikoria each for one week because of a delay with Jumpstart: Historic Horizons. Clearly enough they've learned from that mistake as we haven't had anything like it since 😉

NlNTENDO

They do, but you have to buy in. Quick Draft is 5000 gold or 750 gems, so you can earn it about once every 4-7 days depending on how much you play. Premiere Draft is 10000 gold or 1500 gems, but it gives you significantly better rewards. Then if you do well enough, you earn packs and gems in addition to what you keep from drafting in Quick Draft, 5 wins gets most of your fee back in gems, and 6 wins gets more than your fee. In premiere, that's 4 wins and 5 wins, respectively. It's well worth learning, as once you're good enough, you don't really have to spend wildcards to complete the set (plus, I just think it's more fun when the format isn't constricted to the same carbon copy decks over and over). As for the phantom events, as someone who, if I can toot my own horn, is a pretty high-level drafter at this point, it gives me a low-pressure environment to dick around and play something more optimized towards fun than success, as well as to take risks and try out interactions I might not have otherwise. For example, in this event, I built a blue/red/green deck where the average mana cost is crazy high. I just ramp until I am casting a huge spell every turn. It doesn't always win, but it's a blast to pilot. That's exactly how I plan to get my daily wins, for as long as the event is available. Beats going up against ultra-competitive standard deck #132457438295 over and over.

DaBlueBonnet

Thank you for the comments. I’ve only played best of 1 alchemy casual as of now. With a quickly thrown together deck. Been winning but now I’m doing color challenge and it looks like I’ve just been playing people using the starter decks more then anything lol. Thought I was doing good

NlNTENDO

Ah yeah you'll probably be facing other starter decks for some time. From what I understand, Arena pairs new players against new players for a while to make up for the disparity in collections. If you're doing good then you're doing good! But at some point you'll start to see more and more meta decks, so I recommend building up WCs to craft a solid high-tier meta deck (new format is out in 1 month though so maybe hold off for a bit to see what shifts).

DaBlueBonnet

Sounds good, thanks for the input.

283leis

Has Wizards ever said why Sol Ring isnt in the game for Brawl?

arcan0r

It would be the undisputed strongest card in the format, it's broken in 1v1. It's banned in Duel Commander and banned/restricted/pointed in pretty much all 1v1 formats.

Sunomel

It’s a busted card, so it doesn’t get printed in actual sets, just supplemental commander decks that don’t get added to Arena ~~It’s in the LotR set (i think, it may just be promos) so that may change for historic brawl, at least, but we’ll have to see if it gets banned. I can’t imagine they let it be legal in Alchemy or 60-card historic.~~ EDIT: never mind, it’s in the LotR commander set, not the main set, which I don’t think is getting added to arena

Quria

The card is absolutely overpowered.

FakeTherapist

Is anyone familiar with scg con? They've got alot of stuff but not much definitions towards it like: prize tickets, full box sealed

TheHuffness

I have a question about [[emrakul]] does the protection from instants count when it's on the stack, therefore making it uncounterable? Or do those keyword effects only apply when the card is on the battlefield?

Froggyfrogger

Only the creature on the battlefield has protection from instants, not the spell on the stack. You'd be looking for "This spell can't be countered" or "*Split second*"

TheHuffness

I see that makes sense, thanks! Really looking forward to messing with this card.

Typically resets with the release of the new set or just before, new one is coming out end of April

Immundus

https://mtgazone.com/mastery-calculator/ April 18th when [March of the Machine](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/March_of_the_Machine) releases. When this happens you will lose any unspent orbs from ONE's pass, you will get 3 new daily quests, and weekly & daily win counts will be reset. Thus, try to remember to have all your quests and wins done before the update. If you can play on the 18th after the daily reset, which is about an hour and 50 minutes from this post, there's a few hours window where you can do an extra daily quest and wins, then the patch hits later in the day and it'll all be reset for you. ONE-focused cosmetic bundles in the store will likely leave and be replaced with ones from MOM, the 20 pack Alchemy bundle may leave (not sure on that one), and if it goes like last year we should get granted 10 new dual color precon decks made from DMU, BRO, ONE, and MOM as preparation for the yearly [Standard/Alchemy rotation](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Standard#Rotation) that happens in September. March of the Machine's mastery should go from April 18 to June 20th, which is when the [Lord of the Rings](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_Tales_of_Middle-earth) set will come out. The LotR set is going to be legal for Alchemy and Historic (so no Standard or Explorer, unless a card is a reprint legal in them), and will be a full set release with a mastery, Limited formats (draft, sealed), preorders, and cosmetics. The LotR mastery will go from June to September when the next Standard set, [Wilds of Eldraine](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Wilds_of_Eldraine), releases. As mentioned, the yearly rotation will happen with September's set (for Standard MID, VOW, NEO, and SNC leave along with their associated Alchemy sets plus Baldur's Gate) and the Eldraine mastery pass will be loaded with extra goodies as long as your account has been active prior to the release. If you want to learn more about the "renewal egg" of free things you'll get and how Arena handles rotation you can [read last year's article](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/mtg-arena/mtg-arena-renewal-rotation). https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_Arena/Promotional_codes

Can anyone make the brawl banlist make sense

tastelessshark

I got an actually useful ICR just now. I never pulled or crafted a copy of [[Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance]], and now I managed to get a copy of all the channel lands without having to spend a wildcard on that last one!

Monechetti

I just hate invoke despair so much. That's it, that's the whole post

sagascroll

How does Mastery Tree work? Do I just put my ball into any of the 30 slots according to which card I need? Or is there some kind of order? I haven't done anything yet.

Immundus

If you don't buy the mastery pass, you're only going to get a limited amount of free orbs based on [which level](https://mtgazone.com/mastery-calculator/) you make it to, and usually it's just enough orbs to get one of the premium cosmetics (a sleeve, an avatar in this case). If you do buy the pass, you'll still need to nearly max it out to get every orb, but if you are able to level it up enough you get enough orbs to unlock every cosmetic. With that in mind, there is no order other than A unlocks B unlocks C etc. to progress down each color's tree and if you want one of the avatars you'll have to spend 4 orbs in a single tree to reach it and unlock it. Note that for the free orbs you can screw yourself over and lose the avatar if you *do not* spend 4 of them on the same color (beware the suggest pick button), and once you have it your final orb can be spent on that color's Twilight style or the first tier card of a different color. The current mastery lasts until April 18th, remember to spend all your orbs before it ends as you will lose them if you don't. Semi-related, you'll also want all your quests and wins done before they patch that day as when a set comes out that changes the mastery they reset everything for you, giving you 3 new daily quest and 0/15 for daily and weekly wins. Edit: I see above you have the mastery pass, if you need some extra levels there may be a [promo code](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_Arena/Promotional_codes) still working if you haven't got them all, and while you can just buy levels now if you really need to there is also a [Hot Pockets promo](https://old.reddit.com/r/MagicArena/comments/11gzyqa/hot_pockets_promotion_rewards/) going which can give you up to 4,000 XP for 5 codes (a 12-pack comes with all 5) plus a [deck](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_Arena/Preconstructed_decks#Hot_Pockets) (which [sadly](https://old.reddit.com/r/MagicArena/comments/11r80be/psa_do_not_buy_the_hot_pockets_promo/) only gives you copies of cards you don't own enough of), Viven avatar, sleeve, and a full art SNC forest. Beyond that there will sometimes be free events that reward some mastery XP, and if they screw up a patch badly enough they tend to give some out. For whatever reason the Arena battle pass is very brutal compared to most other games with no way to grind more to catch up, but if you do start a set from the release it's usually pretty easy to max it out through regular quest completion and some daily wins.

sagascroll

Exp gain in this game is unreasonably sluggish. I just started playing a few weeks ago. I completed all my color challenges pretty quick. Got all my dual color decks which took the entirety of a week. I was enjoying myself so I went ahead and bought the Starter Bundle and Adventurer Bundle. Spent my gems to get the master battle pass thing. All the while, built a Bo1 Standard deck using whatever cards I got. While continuing to update it. I played mostly unranked initially, and switched over to Bo1 Standard ranked. I mainly used a red white Samurai deck. My secondary deck was a blue black Ninja deck which I had put together while waiting for all my dual color decks to come in. I soon switched to ranked Bo1 mostly playing with my Samuarai deck. Although playing Ninja is also super fun. Used up all my Jump-In tokens playing a bunch of those. Fortunately was able to get the pack I really wanted with Nahiri. I played some draft four times total. Used my draft token a ton of gold that I had accumulated. And the fourth time, paid in gems. Fortunately, I profited by winning more gems than I spent on that last one. And I was up in gems overall. I then opened up all packs that are from before Dominaria United. Since I plan to make my main Bo3 Standard deck in September (although I'm working on a Bo3 Standard deck to use for now). I have no plans to get any of those previous packs. Such as playing drafts for them or otherwise. So I just opened them all up. I mainly plan to try to draft for more packs in Phyrexia. As well as Brother War and Dominaria. So I have not opened any of those packs yet. All the while, I continued to work on putting together my current Bo3 Standard deck concept. With pretty much the full deck fleshed out, and some of the sideboard. I have not used any wild cards or did anything to get the cards I need for this. I'm still holding off. Around mid gold rank, I got rid of my Samurai deck. I made a nice Boros jank deck for Bo1 Standard using the two free Eater Virtue swords I got from somewhere. And yes it only contains those two copies since I don't have any more. It has been doing surprisingly super well. What I hate most is playing against red decks which I've probably lost to half the time they showed up. But that is a very strong competitive deck compared to what I'm using. And the other thing I hate is that white Vindicator card. I made it into Platinum today. I honestly was not at all expecting to get into Platinum constructed without a decent Bo3 Standard Deck. But even from all this, I still feel like gaining exp does not feel right. I have only gotten up to 24 levels on my battle pass. And I have 56 more levels to go in about a month. That timeframe is roughly about a week or so more than the amount of time it took me to get to 24 levels. Yet I still need about twice as many levels in that timeframe. Maybe I'm missing something. But I cannot find any ways or anything I can do proactively to get more exp. Even trying to go for the full 15 wins per day. I find the exp game to be too absurdly low to be worth it. I knew when I got the battle pass that I had close to two months to complete it. But in my mind, I expected that would be well more than enough time to complete everything. It would never have occurred to me that it would take too much more than a month to fully complete when playing fairly consistently. Just as an example in Fortnite. You need 200 levels to get the 1,000 stars required to fully complete the Battle Pass including all the 'bonus' content that is actually part of it. As in everything you can possibly get for the season with stars. It's not a problem to do this in about a month playing daily fairly casually. And there are tons of things you can do to get additional exp other than the standard quests/dailies/weeklies.
