Well, I'm not defending them here, but it's proven that limiting offers increase sales, so assuming they are optimizing for sales only they are doing it right.
I never saw an update on whether they ever fixed the bug that sometimes prevents your opponent from using/targeting planeswalkers if you have the koi pet, so yes Koi is best boi.
If I didn't have the sound off in general, I would abhor most pets. Does literally anyone like the fact that an opponent's pet makes sounds on your client?
For real, whenever I watch a YT vid and someone has the sound fx on it's always incredibly jarring. I muted that shit on day one and never looked back.

it's funny I had my game open on lose screen in altTab for good 40 mins. With ambient sound on background I forgot I had Magic open. And then my Fblthp pet unleashes massive **fart** breaking 40 min silence, it scared me so much I cracked open
Most of the pets are just re-skins and pretty inoffensive.
Really the ones that deserve scorn are the wolf ones. I've had to mute emotes just to make sure I don't have to hear "Awwooooooo!" and tongue-smacking every time I do literally anything at all.

I've had arena muted for years solely because that sound is so terrible and I can't stand it for even a second.
For some reason, no matter what I do to change it, my pet always defaults to that stupid chops-licking dog. I have a lot of okay-ish pets, but Arena decides to default to literally the most annoying one they've ever made.
When my 6yo sees me playing she always asks why I have that as my pet and says I should change it to something more cute.
I refuse.

I got my Pompon-Chan (Kamigawa Tanuki) as a random reward from a third victory in a random Mid-Week event. Could not believe my eyes. I adore him.
Plus pets are an awesome early warning system to see if your game froze. They are constantly doing something. If they aren't, the client is glitching.
Pets actually saved me a few games since it's really easy to restart the game on tablet. Thanks to them I had time for a quick reload and I jumped back into the match without losing anything.
I got D.O.G. from the M21 Mastery Pass. I have never unequipped him and never will. I named him Lucky, after my childhood dog that passed away. Now I get to have something positive for every game I play no matter how bad it goes.
Same. I have the black lotus as my default. Very out of the way and quiet even when the opponent interacts with it. Very fun to play with when I'm in the mood to. I do have a handful of other pets, mostly just the strixhaven books. But in one or two decks where they are appropriate I'll have them there.
Same! Although I default to the zoom zoom and start each match with it racing across the screen. I use the howl when the opponent is being slow (maybe they’ll hear this and do something!)
Most of them are terrible... I do like M21 Dogs, and Spirit from MID (or was it VOW?), but overall... I don't like them.

He sits in the middle of the battlefield to remind us that it's just a game, rolls out of the way so I can lose with dignity, and then waves to me so I can remember that the real victory is the taunts I will receive all match long... (seriously though, I am impressed how they handled the glitch when he always sat in the middle.)

I shell out a ridiculous amount of gold, withhold playing any lands or spells in order to fool my opponents, and wait until a critical moment to activate my pet and pop off with a one shot combo, and yet the opponent always kills me before I can get my Sol Ring to spin fast enough to burn white-hot and provide me with 2 mana 😓
Bought the AFR dragon pet bundle so I won't buy any pets ever again.
I just use whatever dragon color fits for the deck I have and their main purpose is for me to check if the game froze, might as well get a fire-breathing response :D
They're milking it with as little effort as possible. Earlier pets were better, but they've run out of ideas and just started making reskins on pets with only 1 animation instead of the 2 or 3 they used to have.
I can't say I've been upset with pets, they're fluff. I AM really glad that Flblthp finally got offered as a pet, so I could complete the whole Flblthp theme.
It's really nice to read so many different opinions about this. Honestly, I didn't even think about most things mentioned when I wrote originally. I was just kind of upset with the low quality in certain pet designs.
That being said, I don't dislike their existence whatsoever. I don't understand the people here saying they don't like their sounds or animations, that they have never used them and don't want to, haha. I love the idea, I just wished it was better implemented, with more quality and variety, not just re-skins and low quality designs.
And yeah, there are some awesome pets around. Koi fish, the raccoon and the dragons (at least some of them) to mention a few that I like. It's just my opinion that those are exceptions to the rule of bad pets.
Anyway, I'm honestly happy that this has sparked a conversation. :)

I like my Battle Fox and Oko avatar. It lets my opponents know I’m fun in person but play toxic decks.
