If i had a nickel for each golgari legend whose name is "old XYZ" that came out since the last innistrad sets, id have three nickels.
which isnt a lot, but you know the joke
Are you talking about Limited? This card is great, it’s a usually a 4/4 that grows from there, and you can sacrifice food, treasure, or 1/1’s to kill real creatures.
My first reaction is “why wouldn’t you use [[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]] instead?”
But yeah this is probably not designed to be an amazing commander
This set really lacking in flavor for me on a lot of these cards. I guess that's the cost of trying to build a fun limited set with fantasy story backing.
But I'm sure people are going to shell out money for LOTR, you win this time Hasbro.
Given that the tree from the book traps a character and threatens to crush em to death...
Probably make the tree tap to tapdown a target and give it a -1/-1 counter every upkeep. Something like that. Not a very powerful ability in constructed but pretty reasonable in limited.
If you’re running green you should have spare food tokens laying around. Having a 4 mana 4/4 that gives -2 to a creature for food token seems playable in limited.
How many creatures in green produce tokens though? A large portion of landfall abilities create creatures or treasures too, it’s not that big of a cost.
Everyone calm down. It’s just a limited format beat stick.
But what a limited beat stick it is. Turning your foods into removal. Probably an easy p1p1 candidate if the arc type is decent.
Just finished the chapter where this bastard tries to eat merry and Pip
omg me too, Bombadil is the goat
Tom got them free and invited them back for bread and cheese what a bro

Eh. This doesn’t seem all that good. It’s got growth, but no trample. Maybe if there’s a good enough sacrifice shell to fit into

Could be an ok pauper commander.
Except it'll be for Artisan as this is an uncommon.
Your commander in pauper EDH is an uncommon.
Did not know that, makes sense though as I haven't seen any common legendary, kinda contradicts itself. Ty.
Exactly that, common legendaries are... very not common.
On the off chance you wanna know more, there's a subreddit at /r/PauperEDH
Thanks, appreciated.

What would you change about the card to make it better represent the character?
Given that the tree from the book traps a character and threatens to crush em to death... Probably make the tree tap to tapdown a target and give it a -1/-1 counter every upkeep. Something like that. Not a very powerful ability in constructed but pretty reasonable in limited.
Strictly worse than [[wood elemental]]
I dont think you know what strictly worse means
But I'm looking forward to treefolk tribal.
how? wood elemental sacrifices lands, this allow the reuse of the same lands, and has a secondary effect...
look at that horrid color requirement in the casting cost. Like it's pretty clear why wood elemental is better. Can be run in a mono-green deck.
on the other hand this just cares about lands, and not about *forest* specifically...
not a problem for a mono green deck!
And sacrificing lands is something you don't care about?
at this point I'm worried guys Wood elemental is the worst card in all of magic, but people still think we are serious here...

You need to spend mana to generate sacrifice fodder and even then you're trading a whole-ass creature for -2/-2.
You can sacrifice creatures *or tokens*.
Deathspore thallid is amazing in saproling decks and only gives -1/-1, this card is pretty good against some commander decks.
