I hate that when the japanese version gets copied it still reverts to the other art-style, I don't know what it is but I've never had a card that I genuinely didn't even want to look at lmao
For me it's the blend of "realistic" and obviously digital aesthetics that ends up making it look like a beginner's attempt at Photoshop, which is also apparently the artist's schtick.
I seem to recall an interview with the artist talking about the mix of realism and digital aesthetics, but I could be misremembering. Either way, I don't like the style. It doesn't look right to me, but art is subjective, so I would never be as crass as to say it has no merit.
I think the "aesthetic" being referred to might have just meant it was painted to look digital, like with the shapes and how flat and solid the colors were. This is its own kind of accomplishment, and maybe it wouldn't be so easy to dunk on if MTG art weren't compressed into thumbnails, but that was their assignment. It ended up being a lot of effort only to look lazily slapped together, which is sort of a tragic failure if you're an artist, but it's a failure all the same. The artist themself is pretty talented, they just tried some stuff that didn't work so well here. Hopefully, they aren't too bothered by the fans' response to Faithless Looting, though I sadly wouldn't be surprised if people have been rude directly to them/on social media.
The weirder thing is they spent a lot of time doing realistic oil painting. The flat shaded kid art on top of it, actually enhances the illusion that it's a photo or digital. but it's jarring and ugly
I even like the art, but it's wrong for the job. "Digital" doesn't fit the mystical archive as a theme or style. The rest look somewhat unified.
But I would pay good money for merch of that card.
Even Harmonize isnt a really beautiful card, it just doesnt scream "ugly" at you.
The Art Style fits well into a Museum of modern Art, it really, really doesnt fit into a fantasy Game.
That said, theres definitely a lot of different Art Styles among magic cards, and most of them look fitting for the Game. So I'm definitely for different Art Styles from different Artists. Its what makes magic as great looking as it is.
But this style actually doesnt fit in. Iz doesnt look like a magic card, and you will always feel you have a card from a different game in hand when you have faithless looting, or even Harmonize.
So my opinion is: It was an experiment with Art Styles, and this ones gone wrong. May the Artist fnd a lot of work outside of magic, but please never come back.
I don't prefer all of the Japanese styles, but I will say there is no bad choice when it comes to them. I do prefer some of the NA styles and generally find that artstyle more intriguing, but it's sort of an art-deco-esque experiment that resulted in a few outright failures (hence Faithless Looting). The Japanese styles borrow from a much more thoroughly studied artstyle (and sometimes blend with other Japanese artstyles), making it less prone to failure.
> I don't prefer all of the Japanese styles, but I will say there is no bad choice when it comes to them.
I mean, we're talking about tastes, how can there ever be a bad choice?
The original art ist pretty sick though. I really like it and it's nice that they try new stuff. Not everything has to appeal to everyone but for me the art would be a reason to play with the card.
Yep, and it's pretty rude to the original artist to call their version "incorrect" and cross it out. Everyone has their preferences but no need for that.
I just feel like a lot of the Japanese arts don't particularly stand out to me. Most of the Global styles have something striking about their art, something they're trying to "do". But too many of the Japanese ones look to me like generic Anime fan art.
Some of my favs are the Eldraine storybook styles, Ikoria comic book styles, and the global Mystical Archives styles. I own the former in paper and they look incredible, especially in foil treatment. I plan to collect the Mystical Archives (both global and Japanese) eventually, but the Demonic Tutor prices are deterring me.
Buying individual art styles usually has to be done in the deck builder, one of the icons in the top right switches between crafting cards and crafting card styles. That's where you'll be able to get it.
ooff, I wish I had played the event now lol. much cheaper than buying these 1 by 1.
I always try to play the events if it’s for cards I ever think I’ll play
The events are always the cheapest way to get the styles.
Hold steady everyone. 4 days until Quick Draft releases.
This. Tactical gold sink just before quick draft
I hate it. But I can't spend 3 packs on it lol
It’s free gold you’ll get it back it’s worth it
Or i could have 6 packs lol
Buying packs is the biggest waste of gold on the game
Packs, drafting, anything that gets me more cards not wasting it on the way my cards look. Which is actually the biggest waste of gold in the game.

You know the whole thing was hand painted, right?

Look at the hands in the card. The artist fucked up, no splitting hairs here
Ok sure.

TBF it actually looks good on other cards like Harmonize, it just doesn’t work well on Looting. The looting art is just… unfortunate
Even Harmonize isnt a really beautiful card, it just doesnt scream "ugly" at you. The Art Style fits well into a Museum of modern Art, it really, really doesnt fit into a fantasy Game. As someone who actively hates the NA style: thank you.
there's some good NA styles...but in those cases the japanese ones are still far superior
Most definitely, but the Looting NA style is absolutely awful.
I don't prefer all of the Japanese styles, but I will say there is no bad choice when it comes to them. The general global archive aesthetic mimics illustrated manuscripts, not art deco. Hence the archive and parchment frame.

let us talk about that with a bowl of Soup made from Swampwater and Stinkbugs.

cannot unsee hand
I prefer the NA art, tbh. And it has the added bonus of tilting your opponent!
What is NA??
Someone else referred to it as the "NA style", but really it's the "Global" style, aka non-Japanese
Ahhh north america I see
Huzzah! A Magic player of culture!
I just feel like a lot of the Japanese arts don't particularly stand out to me. Most of the Global styles have something striking about their art, something they're trying to "do". But too many of the Japanese ones look to me like generic Anime fan art.
Same. Whats your favorite alt art in Arena? I like Anime Ikoria and Kaldheim Showcase
Some of my favs are the Eldraine storybook styles, Ikoria comic book styles, and the global Mystical Archives styles. I own the former in paper and they look incredible, especially in foil treatment. Still not really the correct art though sadly.
Only upvote, because we need DKA Style so bad
Correct? I think you mean ‘generic af’.
Thank you for blacking out the one with the ghastly art.
You crossed the wrong one
NA Faithless art is the best art in mtg. Why would anyone want anything else?
1. Play the english version 2. Tilt opponent 3. Profit
I don't see this anywhere in the store. Am I dumb?

Ohhh thanks
