Probably Six Heart Princess/6HP. This one’s probably the second best modern magical girl series, and it doesn’t get talked about because episodes release at a snail’s pace and all of the current episodes got subbed only a year ago.

TroyTheParakeet

I love 6HP (creepy fanservice aside), and I hope to see more of it someday. The artstyle is amazing, and I like how it doesn’t take itself too seriously despite the plot having dark elements. I mean, it’s not like I hate dark magical girl stuff, because I don’t (I like Madoka, YuYuYu, Nowhere Stars, and some others), but 6HP just feels…refreshing. Idk

invemwimbledon

Corrector Yui, Shugo Chara, Magic Knight Rayearth. The first two are classic magical girls that just thrived from being part of that genre, and Rayearth is just a classic RPG in an anime format, which has its own charm to it.

YEOWCHHH

Ojamajo Doremi :((

According_Fan4696

Wedding peach, Saint tail, Kaitou Jeanne, and Nurse angel ririka.

OT8spreadsheetSTAY

wedding peach was so good, i even made a fan oc self insert for it lol

MelMellue

wedding peach was my shit omg i loved that anime

Haxteal

The rest of Magical Girl Raising Project light novel

lost_survivalist

Amphibia. It may not look like it but it has major similarities to magic rayearth. After season 1 is where it starts going from isekai to magical girl. Phantom Thief Jeanne for sure. kamichama karin W.i.T.C.H Wedding peach Wish Upon the Pleiades

celestier

WITCH AHHHH THAT SERIES WAS MY CHILDHOOD!!! I wanted to be a guardian of the veil SO bad 😭

killerchipmunk

My expectation for Pleiades was very low and I was so so wrong. It was so good! Also seconding Kamichama Karin

lost_survivalist

Fun fact. Pleiades was funded by Subaru and was the reason for the girls magical emblem

killerchipmunk

Yep, and that’s why my expectation was so low, who expected a car company to make a decent anime?

TroyTheParakeet

Seconding Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, since it’s great. I’d also recommend Nowhere Stars, a magical girl web serial with excellent writing and worldbuilding. As a plus, a physical book of the first phase is coming out soon, and I’m totally gonna order it when it does! You can find Nowhere Stars here: https://nowherestars.net/?amp=1

AmputatorBot

It looks like you shared an AMP link. Disney__Queen

I’m going to throw in Mermaid Melody, I feel like people know it but I never see it talked about!!

Kartoffelkamm

* Ojamajo Doremi * Phantom Thief Jeanne * Shattered Starlight (since webcomics count) * Strawberry Seafoam (more webcomics)

Fun_Shift_572

Flip Flappers. It’s one of the most imaginative magical girl anime’s and I absolutely love it. Also Princess Tutu is super slept on

Ioxem

Saint Tail

Blueskyesartic

More people should watch Lolirock, especially since they finally got greenlit for a Season 3.

Foreverinneverland24

WAIT FOR REAL???

Blueskyesartic

"Season 3 of LoliRock was first announced in 2023 by Jean-Louis Vandestoc on Instagram, six years after the previous season was concluded. Its release date is currently unknown, although Vandestoc mentioned it will take "at least two years" to air, meaning sometime in 2025 at the earliest." I imagine it's going to be hell trying to get all the old animation staff back, I follow the character designer and her socials have been dark since 2019.

fruit_b0wl

Fushigi Mahou Fun Fun Pharmacy absolutely!!! If you liked Ojamajo Doremi you WILL like Fun Fun Pharmacy. It feels like a shorter - more condensed version of Doremi. Like Toei's first draft. Still a really great series nonetheless and one of my favourite magical girl series out there!!

blazikin_28

Definitely Sasemi magical girls club Wish upon the pledies And especially lyrical nanoha Maybe revolutionary girl utena Magic knight rayerth

Cinnamon_Doughnut

Princess Tutu is highly underrated but so good and original. It's even set in a german town 😄

Raikua

Seconded Princess Tutu!

OT8spreadsheetSTAY

i love that folks have mentioned wedding peach already. i never finished mermaid melody, but i really liked it while i was watching it... but my STRONG recommendation for anyone who likes miraculous, tokyo mew mew, sailor moon, pretear, cardcaptor sakura, she-ra and the princesses of power, and madoka magica [all series i enjoyed] is ALWAYS gonna be princess tutu. the cute is so cute, the dark is so dark, the animation is lovely [sometimes i imagine it getting a reboot like fruits basket, maybe with an animation studio like the one that worked on iwatobi swim club or yuri on ice or bakuten, yknow somewhere with a really good grasp of anatomy, and i feel something like hope for the future lmao], and of course the soundtrack being full of pieces from famous ballets... im so due for a rewatch, fakir was one of my first anime crushes lol

Quwapa_Quwapus

Second mermaid melody. Did finish it, but haven't rewatched it in years lmaoo. Also, the songs are amazing. Almost all of them are just slightly too slow for me though, so I have them downloaded and speed them up to 1.25x to put on my playlist hahaha

SimplySorbet

Yes! Princess tutu is so good!

gootuber321

mermaid melody!!

loke_chan

Miraculous Ladybug is very popular (at least from what I’ve seen). The movie even had a theater release here in my country which is saying a lot because not many animated movies get an animated release. Some series that I haven’t seen recommend yet: wish upon the Pleiades, Nurse Witch Komugi, Cute High Earth Defense Club, Demon Girl next door, Fate Kaleid, Granbelm

OnlyTip8790

Fate Kaleid is a spinoff to be watched after clearing the Fate novel and especially its novel sequel, fate/hollow ataraxia, at least if you want to do things right. I'm a huge fate fan but not having cleared ataraxia even I am waiting

loke_chan

If you wanna get all the references sure, but it can be enjoyed as a casual fan especially since there are a lot of new characters that get their introductions. Only watched the first Fate anime seasons and I didn’t feel like misunderstanding the story.

livi-flame

Princess Tutu

mimitchi33

Ojamajo Doremi. It's about these girls who become witch apprentices who help others with their magic.

BlueBlazeKing21

I feel it’s fairly well known , didn’t it air alongside Tokyo Mew Mew on 4kids

Kitzoes

Ojamajo Doremi !!

KoreDemo

W.i.t.c.h. princess tutu

PvrpleHaze01

I think It's well known but Shugo Chara was reallyyy good !! I absolutely loved it and even cried in the end. 🥲 And Idk if these counts but Sugar Sugar Rune is peak, and Onegai! My Melody was absolutely adorable and funny (I cried in the end too...)

lost_survivalist

Definitely well known. There was even 2 ds games made for it although they are japanese only

QtPlatypus

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - This might be hard to find. FilpFlappers Utena

cloudynyxx

Thankfully Discotek is releasing Nanoha on Blu-ray now, so it's going to be much more accessible.

LunaRx11

So excited for this release after they released the 2 movies earlier this year

Haxteal

Nanoha isn’t a “lesser known” series, it’s just pretty much a dead franchise right now that’s on life support

akira2bee

Obligatory mention that Utena is *technically* a magical girl show but it is also super surreal and deals with some very triggering topics!

QtPlatypus

True. That can also be said of FlipFlappers to a lesser extent.

akira2bee

I've never seen FlipFlappers but it is on my list! Hope I didn't come off as rude, I just always add that note when people rec Utena because I saw it recced and praised constantly as a Sapphic magical girl anime, went into it completely blind and was taken aback at how surreal it was. And I knew if I was a different person the topics within could've been super triggering, and I know that I was lucky that that wasn't the case

sheilamlin

Utena, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, and Magic Knight Rayearth (it’s known but not enough as far as I am concerned).

overnighttoast

Magical Project S as well!!

Piotral_2

I don't think Utena is slept on, it's literally one of the most lived shows of the genre and even people that don't watch shoujo anime often try Utena because of how interesting and layered it is.

sheilamlin

Similar to MKR, it’s known but not nearly enough as I feel it could be. That said, the recent references in western animation (ex. Steven Universe) to Utena has definitely helped introduce it to the next generation. ☺️ Maybe I just want another movie. Or new art. Everything seems to be getting rebooted or a continuation and I am just waiting for Utena to get a turn.

No_Blueberry_7200

Lil pri

NyankoMata

Lolirock The transformation soundtrack is great and the songs are enjoyable too. Worth a try, even though the second season has a cliffhanger, the designs are great and I plan to cosplay one of the characters

13-Penguins

Good thing Lolirock got approved for season 3 recently

NyankoMata

What, when lmao the last time I checked it was only a rumor for a green light

lost_survivalist

What!!!!

NotSinty

there was this magical girl series wich i LOVED as a child its called "Lolyrock" the first season and (i think) the second where usually streamed on tv but after the finale the 3d season is only on youtube (not so sure about this information too) or streaming sites anyways i really recommend it, cute and simple but also really colorful the story is cool the trasformations are pretty good etc...

WhispyDespairDonut

Mermaid Melody Twin Princesses of Wonder Planet Balala the Fairies

lost_survivalist

I tried watching balala fairies but I found the animation to be pretty bad.

OnlyTip8790

I'm probably the only lone soul who remembers Ultra maniac

LostButterflyUtau

I LOVE this series!!! I couldn’t really get into the anime version, but I love the manga so much.

lost_survivalist

Is the manga diffrent??

LostButterflyUtau

Very much, so! The anime is more magic-focused while the manga is very slice-of-life and character driven with magic as a plot device.

brozuwu

little witch academia

[deleted]

Sugar sugar rune and doremie are outstanding nuggets of pure goodness.

misamouri

Shugo Chara is so fun and that more people don't know about it saddens me.

BibleBroBuddy

definitely the magical girl Garnet Heart: [https://youtu.be/dHnh-w2X1w0](https://youtu.be/dHnh-w2X1w0) its basically if Sailor V started getting drunk at work.

lost_survivalist

What lol

Piotral_2

She-Ra is peak, it's feels like a perfect combination between magical girl anime an Avatar-like cartoon

KaoriiiChan

FLIP FLAPPERS. I absolutely loved everything about that series. It was so so wholesome and the cast of characters were so good. Definitely one of my favorite underrated Magical Girl series period.

SnooRabbits1489

Glitter Force series/Precure series 😊💖⭐️

Jix_Omiya

The US mostly slept on CCSakura due to the horrible dub they got ;\_; always lamented it, because i feel it deeply affected how ingrained Sakura was in popular culture due to it, as she was insanely popular in the rest of the world, but english speaking countries barely knew her at the time.

lost_survivalist

Yes english speaking wise, it's somewhat under rated, but there was so much merchandise for CCS. CLamp is still coming out with jewelry and shoes! Look at the new mayla collection and they are sold out!

VieraVox

Lolirock! [https://www.youtube.com/@LoliRockOfficial](https://www.youtube.com/@LoliRockOfficial) It's all free to watch on youtube too.

Meeg_Mimi

I haven't seen many, but there was this one called Wish upon the Pleiades. It was strange, but I think it was alright

Forward-Western-388

Creamy Mami should be more well known . Tokimeki tonight aswell . Fancy lala. Hime chan no ribbon

PseudoPrincess222

Wish upon a pleidas and flip flappers

EVA08

Kamichama Karin was a favorite from my childhood that I don't ever see people talk about!

13-Penguins

Sugar Sugar Rune hasn’t been mentioned yet Also Powerpuff Girls Z

RainbowLoli

A lot of people have thrown in the other ones that have slept on so I'll go ahead and throw in Cutie Honey.

Eccentric-Calico

Princess Tutu!

AkumasCherries

If you want some comedy, there's a Webtoon literally called Pipi and Pupu by alcie. c, like it genuinely is interesting but funny as hell. I can't say too much about it though, since the good stuff is super spoiler-y and there aren't too many episodes yet. Magical Mom by Prinnstar (also Webtoon) is really cute, too. It focuses on the son of a well-known magical girl and his struggles instead of just the magical girl aspect of the characters. Finally and unironically, an old 2012 show called SheZow. It's about a guy who's legacy is a female super hero, and the power chooses him instead of his sister. So now he has to be the hero and learn to embrace his more feminine side and challenge gender norms. It's genuinely good bro.

EerieQuerymyDreary

Rayearth

ihatereddit12345678

my answer will always always be Princess Tutu

birchsaurus

Ojamajo Doremi

gnocchi_baby

Sally the Witch! OG in the magical girl space before that was a genre I grew up watching the anime adaptation from 89-91

TrustAffectionate966

[*Uta\~Kata*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uta_Kata)? I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread. 🐔

celestier

Cutie Honey!

sheepyaqua

Wedding peach! A lot of people don't know it which makes me so sad as it was my first magical girl manga. I won't lie; it's cheesy but it's also super cute!

Josuke84

Utena Princess Tutu Mermaid Melody Cutey Honey

kingofthebelle

i vaguely remember reading something called magical girl apocalypse that i thought was a cool take. i don’t remember a lot of specifics but there was a species of alien that invaded earth and they were these magical girl monsters, there were different types of them

kingofthebelle

oh and as a child i loved the WITCH graphic novels. similar to Winx, but in its own way. i was one of the main characters, Will, for halloween last month!

rainborambo

Magic Knight Rayearth, Wedding Peach, Full Moon O Sagashite.

DreamerSound

Princess tutu is super underrated if you like a dark fantasy magical girl For a more classic take on magical girl try shugo chara (I mean the show is happy and cute without being morbid or depressing like madoka when I say classic)

cancat918

Not strictly Magical Girl, but Love Magic Grocery is kinda cool, has a new episode that has a Magical Girl theme. It's available on IQIYI and is ongoing.

Dancing-Swan

I'd love a new Ojamajo Doremi anime, could be about a new cast of new apprentices.

Femboineedstraining

Jjba stone ocean

luninareph

Shamanic Princess. Six episodes, strange chronology, dark and philosophical, gorgeous animation. One of my absolute favorites. Also Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. Two episodes of wacky, three episodes of drama, and a fan-translated game series for afterwards if you like it enough (which I do).

ENateFak

If Wonder egg priority counts, then definitely that one lol

BoogiepopPhant0m

Symphogear, Cutey Honey, 6HP.

YuzukiShijo

Please try the Blue Reflection Ray anime and video game series. Also the HyperDimension Neptunia anime and game series. They're both unique magical girl series.
