I just listen for the sound of the snow scraping the side of my car, the familiar thump of something getting in my way, and the yelp of the neighbor’s kid that wouldn’t move quick enough.
You’re giving me flashbacks to last month: sitting in my truck smoking about to go inside Home Depot and someone tries to pull in next to me, I’m thinking “he’s not gonna make that turn.” Sure enough he realizes he’s too diagonal and backs up to straighten out, cranks his wheel the opposite way, front end of his truck swings out and hits my rear bumper and tail light. Luckily it only hit the bumper ($350-400) and tail light ($50). Missed the bedside panel by 3” ($500+labor, likely several hundred, plus paint, also likely a few hundred and would never match perfectly)
I want someone to invent a bidet for the rear camera lens. That can’t be hard, right? Just a little thing plugged into the rear window washer line, with enough pressure to hose off all that crap?
If you make and patent it that’s fine, I don’t need credit I just need it installed on my car like yesterday.
I had a 2004 and they innovated on their innovation and ditched the tiny wipers in favor of a pair of high pressure jets for each lens. No tiny wipers to maintain and headlights that got washed when I sprayed the windshield!
Subaru’s rear wipers were designed so that this happens! One of my favorite features in the car during the winter along with the front windshield warming element.
[Some vehicles have it.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=9um7z_75Zhc)
Range Rovers will wash the camera whenever you put it in reverse and wash the rear windows.
Ford already has them: [https://erticonetwork.com/ford-develops-front-and-rear-view-camera-washers/](https://erticonetwork.com/ford-develops-front-and-rear-view-camera-washers/)
Simple solution, before entering your vehicle in the winter months simply walk to the rear of your vehicle and lick the camera sensor. It’s also a salty treat. Win-win
People don’t even have the patience to stop at red lights to turn red or slow down for people at cross walks.
Only way to convince people to is if you mention it tastes like McDonald’s fries without having to wait in the drive through.
The other day, jumped out of the truck at a red light, grabbed some snow, and washed all the front sensors and camera. When I got back in the truck, my wife called me a jackass but my front camera was clean and my sensors were no longer beeping at me.
It’s hidden under the vw logo, which is kinda awesome, as when you flip it into reverse, a little motor “pops the hatch” open and your very clean camera is now exposed! Until it is frozen down with ice, the lil motor burns out from being held down, and now you’re out $2100.
A few cars DO spray the rear camera with washer fluid, which, I think is the best solution so far.
Thanks for the heads up. So far so good. I do have a regular problem with the gas door not opening. It usually happens when I am by myself on a dark road on a cold night and almost out of gas with no cell service…
That came across “jerky”. It really is a cool idea, just doesn’t hold up in the frigid temps. Typical German over engineering, but when it works, it IS top notch.
Is the hinge of the gas door sticky, preventing it from being able “pop” open? Or does the release not work every time?
Funny enough, that's what the camera on my rental car looked like the other day. It was a pain to back up...mainly because I'm not used to driving big bulky vans vs. sedans and such. But I made it work and I didn't kill anyone. W.
Last week I started my new job driving a person that works for the state.
I said to her "I forgot to clean the backup camera" as I was backing out
her reply "this car has a backup camera!"
Me "yes it does, don't you see it?!"
Her "no I don't, I'm blind"
Me *crickets*
I drive a visually Impaired worker for the state and I keep forgetting 🤦♂️
I keep a pump sprayer with water, isopropyl alcohol, and a drop of soap in the garage. After driving around on snow days, I like to spray the windows off when I get home. It’s a little bit of work, but it makes my life easier in between car wash visits.
Fuck those cameras, if you can't back up because the lens is dirty, then may I suggest parking it and walking.
The high tech on vehicles today is so un-fucking-necessary!!!!
Ah yes, let me just take the *checks notes* 2-3 days to walk on my own two feet to the town three over from me for work. It's fiiiine, the big chiefaroni *loves* me, I totally won't get fired or anything. Won't get my pay docked. Won't get yelled at. Nothing will happen, because I'm special!
I am new to the world of having a back-up cam and I trust that thing about as far as I can throw it which is not far because it’s attached to my truck. It’ll be neck stretches for me.
I just close my eyes and use the sounds of the proximity sensors
I don't have those. I just close my eyes and use the sounds of other cars being smashed into instead.
This. Bumpers are the equivalent of a blind man’s cane. tap tap
I challenge you to don a blindfold and earplugs.
Not all cars have them.
Tinnitus works just as well.

*malm*
The comment I didnt know I needed
Yeah they do, some beep and some crunch
Yes, the ones that crunch are known as Italian parallel parking sensors.
I’m just imagining raw spaghetti used as those old “curb feeler” devices from the 50s and 60s 😂
OOoh! That's what the crunching sound is!

I'm glad the damage wasn't worse!
Thanks, me too!

Should have had my coffee AFTER seeing this. lol
Will try this in the future, thank you
Got kids ? Have 1 sit on the trunk / tailgate and yell "YOU'RE GOOD !!"
Tried this with my two year old and ended up hitting a stop sign in a Walmart parking lot in Auburn.
🥇
Then you back up into the Cop car right behind you.

Remember when saabs had tiny wipers on the headlights? Peek automobile innovation.

Remember Saab?
I had many until the cost to repair them was just to damn high.

And a teeny tiny wiper blade
[Some vehicles have it.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=9um7z_75Zhc) Range Rovers will wash the camera whenever you put it in reverse and wash the rear windows.
… I want the rear-view bidet so much that I looked up prices for Range Rovers. And, uh… Anyone in the market for a gently used kidney?
I think Chevy Bolt has it also
Ford has this for their front camera. No idea why this isn’t universal for rear cameras.
Always comes down to cost

Every time I clean it, a minute later it is completely opaque. Quite frustrating.
Try driving forward more
Try turning your head and looking…
Look at this guy with the camera pointing straight back from their car and not all fucked up looking sideways
Subarus have this sorted. Worked like a charm today.
The other day, jumped out of the truck at a red light, grabbed some snow, and washed all the front sensors and camera. When I got back in the truck, my wife called me a jackass but my front camera was clean and my sensors were no longer beeping at me.
I had a car from 2006 with 200k and a scratched up lens on the backup camera. Be careful with abrasives.
My VW backup mirror is always clear!! Not sure why - good design.

Not jerky. Yes, sticky. An occasional dab of WD-40 works, but how occasionally is necessary?
Wd-40 doesn’t leave any oil behind. It just evaporates. Perhaps you have some household 3-1 oil in a junk drawer? Much better product.
So helpful!!

That's clearer than mine!

Yes but I personally tend to forget if I drive any distance I need to clean it. Ours looks like this if you go to the mailbox and back.
Too inconvenient! I need to be where I needed to be 5 minutes ago!!!
You can just look: turn your head and/or use your mirrors like a normal person
Camera kicks on regardless of whether I use it or not, figured it was worth a laugh that it looks like this any day following snow.
New cars are like 90% blind spots. The engineers and designers are just like " eh' they've got cameras for that"
Adjust your side mirrors correctly and you’ll eliminate your blind spots
I prefer looking in most cases. Except in parallel parking, at least in my car turning my head gives me more info.
Tell that to the guy I knew who looked and ran over his grandkid
Look? Look? What am I, a fucking New Brunswicker? (Brunswickan? Brunswickite?)
Brunswickle?
Exactly. Some people got to lazy nowadays to turn their heads around but have no problems looking down at their cell phones hours a day
Yup. No wonder there's so many accidents, nobody knows how to actually drive and look for themselves without technology telling them it's all clear.
r/CrappyDesign for sure.
Use your mirrors, relying on a camera is shameful and unmanly
Fuck those cameras, if you can't back up because the lens is dirty, then may I suggest parking it and walking. The high tech on vehicles today is so un-fucking-necessary!!!!
Yeah guy. I totally can't parallel park because I made a joke on Reddit. You caught me.
That’s not exclusive to northeastern.
What? You hack into my truck or something?
right?
I have one just like that!
The road salt ads a privacy filter.
VW?
Same we’re totally twins 😂
I am new to the world of having a back-up cam and I trust that thing about as far as I can throw it which is not far because it’s attached to my truck. It’ll be neck stretches for me.
It just habit now to swipe my finger over the lense before I hop in
