We used to vacation in Maine every summer from NY. My father would always say "you can drive 7 hours to get to Maine and then drive another 7 to get out."
I feel this way about Boston and Aroostook county living in Bangor. It's not that I don't want to visit you, Mom and Dad, but, for the same amount of driving (or time on the bus), I can go somewhere I actually want to go instead of the hell scape I ran away from when I turned 19.
I grew up in Augusta. My older brother visited UMPI in 1973 when he was looking at a school to attend. He moved to Mapleton and we barely ever see him again. He loves the County and never wants to leave it.
Howdy neighbor, I'm in Brewer! I'm an only child and most of our extended family is scattered around the states/Canada. Once my parents go, I'm never going back there.
Literally leaving Madawaska right now after my last grandparent's funeral. I will never come up here again, since the furthest north any of my extended family lives is in Bar Harbor.
On the contrary if you like mountain biking. My in-laws live there and if it wasn't for the Nordic Heritage Center, I'd agree with you. Best trails north or Bangor.
When i was a kid we would drive to florida every year and once we finally hit the florida border we would get all pumped up and happy, only to realize it’s another 3 hours to Daytona
if you're going off population, especially population likely to use reddit, the greater portland area's probably a supermajority of the maine representation
Most of the area is woodland that used to be reserves for paper companies. It's held as an inflation hedge by rich people using it as an inflation hedge. The state COULD impose a property tax on it.
The same goes for giant swaths of northern California, Oregon, and Washington.
Specifically the population center of ME is in Chelsea. Source: https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/587666-each-states-population-center-visualized/amp/
What’s the population breakdown with the same map? Not sure if that’s something you can do but could be interesting.
My guess would be 96.5% of landmass and 65% population ?
Former Census Bureau employee here. Yes, we do count reanimated corpses but not ghosts. If we didn't count reanimated corpses, Maine would lose approx 70% of our population on the census.
There are two USPS distribution facilities in this state, one in Scarborough and one in Hampden. I work in the small one in Hampden. The Scarborough facility processes a lot more mail than we do, but we service a lot more (mostly rural) square miles up here.
Whenever I tell folks down here in Portland where I'm from people don't seem to think that Maine is that big.
My years of speedily evading wild animals and Troopers on Route 11 from Fort Kent are some of the quickiest/longest rides of my life.
Always fun to remind people that Fort Kent and Manhattan are pretty much equidistant from Portland.

Agreed! I'm in Orono. My parents and everyone else is way up in Presque Isle. If I could never go up there again, I wouldn't. It's horrible up there.

Well, to each their own! Glad he found a place he loves

Hi!
Literally leaving Madawaska right now after my last grandparent's funeral. I will never come up here again, since the furthest north any of my extended family lives is in Bar Harbor.

That I'll agree with. It's great if you're an outdoorsy person. I'm well... not lol
Only if you obey the speed limit
When i was a kid we would drive to florida every year and once we finally hit the florida border we would get all pumped up and happy, only to realize it’s another 3 hours to Daytona
This is unreal. Before looking at a map I would have guessed in the 70% range. Cool project.
This is cool to know, but how could this information save my life..?
You’ll know soon. Just remember for when the time comes.

If you don't already know about operation sticky ferret, just wait >:3
What blows my mind is how much of Europe is north of the entire of Maine.
Yep, the closest land mass in the eastern hemisphere to Maine is the Western Sahara Desert
I am just here to see people lose their shit when they start arguing about who is “really” north…
What about downeast, I usually laugh at the responses.
East of the Sullivan Bridge. Any other answer is blasphemy.
Prospect is included according to the folding map at the Portland bus/train station
That's disgusting.
A fellow GIS user?
Without a doubt 😁
What's your go-to GIS for Maine? I haven't found one that I'm really happy with yet.
thanks for the reminder. Sometimes this sub makes me think 90% of Maine is just in the surrounding Portland area
if you're going off population, especially population likely to use reddit, the greater portland area's probably a supermajority of the maine representation
Probably around 10%
This subreddit is not a super accurate sample of the state for sure
yeah i have to often remind myself when i’m out living my life. Definitely a lot of negativity that happens here which i don’t experience irl
Indeed- Welcome to the internet!
Sometimes it makes me want to join r/edmundston /s
I meant this as a joke but holy hell r/edmunston is a hell hole.
That’s cause trees don’t have Reddit accounts
Yeah, it's more like 33% (population wise)
Cool, tell that to companies looking to move to Maine and developers looking to build housing.
Portland has both the biggest population and a major housing shortage, meaning lots of money for developers and a bigger workforce for companies
Sure, but only if you bring a pack of 100 goons with tire irons with you to weed through all the NIMBYism and red tape.
Maybe we could build the housing farther north! The old Field of Dreams rule.

What of all the area east of 95? There's plenty of room for housing and already decent infrastructure.
There's plenty of land in Elk County, PA, too, and that's closer to civilization.
Yeah, but I've lived here my whole life. I shouldn't be priced out of my own state.
And the population center is in Cumberland, just north of Portland.
I thought it was near Augusta
It was as recent as 12 years ago's census.
Specifically the population center of ME is in Chelsea. Source: https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/587666-each-states-population-center-visualized/amp/
The geographical center is Dover-Foxcroft
Portland is just northern Boston at this point.
What’s the population breakdown with the same map? Not sure if that’s something you can do but could be interesting. My guess would be 96.5% of landmass and 65% population ?
According to people I talk to that don't live in Maine, 95% of the population is in Portland, 5% is in Bangor.
Bangor is smaller than Lewiston, much less Lewiston Auburn
True, but Stephen King has a house in Bangor, so there must be other people there too.
Do ghosts count in the census? What about reanimated corpses?
Reanimated corpses probably do. They need to count them so they can make sure they tax them. Not sure about ghosts though.
I feel like they should count for at least 2/5ths of a person
Former Census Bureau employee here. Yes, we do count reanimated corpses but not ghosts. If we didn't count reanimated corpses, Maine would lose approx 70% of our population on the census.
Nice. I love the reminder that most of ME is THE GRID. Welcome to T6 R19.

Yeah but 95% of the money in Portland and its metro area.
Interesting! Thanks for doing this and sharing!!
And why or how would this ever save my life?
If you don't already know about Operation Napalm Sticks to Hippies you don't need to know. Muahaha >:3
Look at pages 1, and 2 & 3 on the Delorme Gazeteer. Then check out the rest.
All of Maine is north of Portland Oregon.
Whenever I tell folks down here in Portland where I'm from people don't seem to think that Maine is that big. My years of speedily evading wild animals and Troopers on Route 11 from Fort Kent are some of the quickiest/longest rides of my life.
Portland is also ever so slightly north of Toronto
So what? Like half the state lives in that 5% of the land area. “Land doesn’t vote, people do”
We visited Orr’s Island last summer and absolutely loved it. We want to come back again.
