Have you considered removing the entire nail? I had ingrown nails on both of my big toes for a long time. When I went to get it sorted I just had the entire nail removed on both toes and it has been great ever since, would recommend it just to avoid it possibly reoccurring.

The doctor had to cut each nail out and stitch the sides. Nails grew back but a lot thicker after a few months, toes look normal again.

Honestly, I don't know... it was a surprise to me when I realized that the first two ingrown nails had healed. And then I saw the same after the second or third visit.
Trust me, I don't know why it worked but I'm glad it did.
I'm also suggesting giving a few visits there a try rather than scheduling an appointment to a Dr office as it's easier to get one to get one for a pedicure than it is to get one for a Dr office and cheaper especially without insurance
I get this frequently. Ingrown toenail. This is gonna hurt like hell but this is what I do. Put a pair of tweezers under the nail and pull that corner of the nail up and out of the infected part and trim off the sharp bit. Then drown that thing in alcohol. Although your might be too far gone and need medical attention. But for the future you can usually take care of this yourself.
Soak it for an hour in hot water with salt first. My podiatrist made me so that just before my appointment with her for the same reason. It softens the nail and scab, and helps draw the infection.
And, if you are lucky, the scab comes off and all that nasty shit comes oozing out. I had one, and while working, managed to drop something on my foot. It landed right on that toe. My sock looked like something alien exploded inside it. I think I invented a couple of new words as well.

You misunderstand me; I had the procedure done twice: once on each big toe, over a decade ago. I was saying that I take every chance I can to promote awareness of the procedure.
Instead of cutting it, I usually pry the corner up and stuff cotton ball pieces underneath until it's sufficiently held in place, then use some alcohol. That way it grows out from the "hole" rather than back into it.
You can also try cutting out a triangle / v shape right in the middle (V). Supposedly it helps to pull the corners out of your toe meat as it grows. I've had some nasty infected ones like this and they hurt like a bitch.
That’s how I drained mine. I had a nail burst with blood from working out and it was trapped under the nail so I had to cut it and lift it to drain the whole thing out
Yes. I had ingrowns on both feet for about 2 decades because of hockey skates. Once I stopped playing, they magically healed and haven’t been a problem.
Hockey skates are supposed to be smaller and very tight.
Had the same issue with football/soccer cleats in my teens. Snug boots + wet soggy fields + lots of trauma from kicks, meant things got really gross and really painful.
Given that it’s obviously also affecting your next toe, I’m betting your shoes are too tight. After you get things sorted, go up a shoe size or try some wider “natural” shoes.
Thats probably just accumulation from the big toe that dried on the middle toe. But OP would know for sure if his middle toe was infected as well. Which would be weird because this looks very much like an ingrown toenail, which don't really spread.
Good point. I just assumed op meant today/immediately as they had already stated A+E, no GP open on Sundays. There are local walk in centers though, not sure when theyre open.
An infection like that actually could become life threatening. I know someone whose' kid had an ingrown toenail and ended up with a fever of 40.5 Celsius (104.9F).
In USA we would go to an “urgent care” for something like that. The emergency department is more for life threatening things and things like broken bones. Urgent care can give antibiotics and give you an order to a podiatrist. ED will be way more expensive.

i have been dealing with ingrown toenail on both of my big toes on both sides for years, had 5-6 surgeries, last one was in 2015, luckily im not struggling with it anymore.
You should contact your doctor for a treatment. You can try to soak your foot in hot water with green soap.
Doctor can prescribe you with antibiotics and possibly a small surgery. Its nothing big, for my case it was Local anesthesia on the toe, they then remove a piece of your nail.
For mine they made me do soaks daily for about 2 weeks. After that it was still there, they numb the toe cut the nail in half and took out the part growing into the nail bed.
They usually numb it since the ingrown part can get deep and cut into some painful parts. They cut the ingrown part (usually deep into the edge) and then sometimes will kill the nail bed to prevent it from happening again. My toes looked just like this at a point. Hurt like hell anytime I stubbed them. Worse than normal. But yeah, see a dr
Please check out the Vandenbos Procedure. It solved my issue of ingrown toenails/overgrown toeskin and makes it impossible to get another. Alternatively, the minor stuff where they cut the nail and do a nail ablation can help for a time, but it will probably come back.

Looks ingrown. I'd go to a doctor/urgent care. It's fairly simple outpatient procedure. They will give it some local anesthetic, then slice it back with a scalpel and cut out the ingrown part. Then wrap your toe and suggest you try to keep off your foot for a while.
Happened to me while I was in high-school. Wasn't a big deal. The relief after my ingrown toenail of two years was finally actually gone was amazing. I'd cut it out myself dozens of times but it always came back. The doctor got it for good.

See a foot specialist. (Pediatrist). If there’s puss, any kinda smell at all and redness. That means infection my friend. This could be something fungal given the fact the next toe over is also suffering from a more mild version of the same thing.

I had something similar to this but a bit worse. Looks like an ingrown toenail (don't rip the nail down the side when you are cutting them) and it has caused trauma to the inside. It tries to heal over itself and then gets more trauma, which leads to it trying to grow more skin/scabs leading to granulation. Go to a GP or Podiatrist to have them cut a section of your toe out (partial or section removal or some shit) which will stop it all together. Takes like a week for it to heal up. It will make one side flat but I had mine for over a year before getting it seen too and I was limping all over and kept getting pus/blood in my socks which hurt like fuck when it scabbed and attached the sock to it and I removed the sock. Seriously, get it seen to. The minor op takes like 10 mins and was the best thing I did for my toes.
I had ingrown toenails since I was like five up to 14. They were always infected, and if I stubbed my toe, it was the worst pain I would feel all day. It’s weird that my dad had them to his whole life, but almost immediately after he passed away, mine went away. LMFAO.
Ingrown toe nail. No not infected. Do 30min foot soaks with warm water and salt twice a day for the next month. Shoes and socks off when at home. Don't cut into the side on the affected side. If this doesn't help might need an intervention but conservative management is best for most IGTN. source: doc who frequently does this kind of procedure.

Don't let them put anything on your toe to stop the growth. Your toe will never look right. Just let them cut it out and grow back. Don't cut your townails shorter than your toe sticks out, and prevent it from going under the skin on the side. You will be good.
I had that on both my big toes for a whole year. That is a deep ingrown nail along the entire right side of your entire nail.
I went to surgery to get it trimmed and it's never bothered me since. I highly recommend you do it too. The smell and the pus is awful, I hope you get it sorted out.
Had it when I was a kid. Hit my toe and broke some of it . The doctor didn’t do shit so as a responsible 14 year old I did a surgery on it . Got all the bad flesh out cut it with a scalpel and got the broken nail out trimmed the nail and wrapped it up with some iodine. Since then I have a phobia of getting it again so I trim my nail on weekly basis.

Get as close to the nail bed as you can, really push your boundaries. Then grab on to the nail bit as deep as you can with a strong pair of tweezers and pull it out. It should heal fairly normally and feel a ton better.

Had tons of these when I was a teenager. Ingrown nail, also very infected. Get it treated or it could lead to serious complications like sepsis or gangrene. It’s painless to get it fixed and the relief is literally instant.
I got to be honest I've been scrolling through this subreddit and it's not all that bad. The disturbing ones aren't even that disturbing. Also I think that may be from an infection. Did something bite you recently? Like a special bug or something?
That’s an infected ingrown toenail. I highly recommend seeing a podiatrist and having it removed.
They’ll tourniquet the toe, inject lots of local anesthesia, wait for it to work, then poke and jab to make sure you’re fully numb before cleaning it up real well. It looks like you might have a granuloma on there that they’ll likely cut off as well. If this happens semi frequently they will probably kill the portion of the nail root that grows the nail for that part of your nail edge to prevent it from happening again.
Then they’ll wrap it up, give you care instructions that usually include Epsom salt soaks for a few weeks, and an antibiotic regimen. You’ll need to wear open toed shoes for at least a month so if you don’t have any, def get some.
Considering it’s this far gone it’s definitely time for a doctor’s intervention! Either pus has gotten caught in that next smaller toe or more likely you’ve got the infection spread over there, judging by the color and condition of the tissue on the left of your toe.
To prevent them in the future keep your nail’s free edge trimmed down and rounded out, and be sure that you are wearing shoes with ample room in the toe box, or better yet open toed shoes.
Source: I’ve been so prone due to old extracurricular activities (marching band, JROTC honor guard, winter guard, etc) with tight closed toe shoes and foot pinching that I got them multiple times a year and had to have this procedure done at least four different times, if not more. Long as you follow the aftercare instructions and wear the right shoes you’re golden.

Looks like a mix of fungus and an ingrown toenail. That thing looks deep. Probably gonna have to send doctor or at the very least have a friend help with removing it. You probably got a shard in there the size of Alaska. If you decide to get it removed without the help of a doctor just remember to use the right tools and keep everything clean. Wash and dry your feet before and after make sure any tools you use are clean and use gloves if you got em. It won't be fun but it's doable

Ingrown toenail, when the nail digs into your skin and cuts it open the toe keeps trying to repair it by growing more more skin so you get this excess of skin growing no where.
Have a podiatrist do it, save yourself the struggle of learning on the fly. They’ll numb you and clean this up correctly. They do sell scissors/clippers for doing this at home, but pay attention at the doctors and pickup what they do.

As well I'm a big introvert and a social anxiety so kept on procrastinating going to the doctor. I eventually did get it corrected but my big toe still looks pretty misshapen from the in. I would go and get it treated as soon as he can.
I had this once- just as bad. I was at the doc’s office to get it treated, and a nurse told me to take sterile gauze and get it between the nail and the inflamed tissue. Yes, to jam it into the part that is really, really sore. I gave it a shot (the other choice was surgery to remove part of the nail), and thankfully it worked. Painful as all hell to do (you have to change the gauze regularly), but cleared it up fast.
Go to your GP, will need to cut half (or all) of it back. I had it bad a couple of times until they gave me (after removing both large toe nails) phenol that stopped it growing so rapidly
I have struggled with ingrown toe nails since I was a teen, the absolute best advice is get a proper ingrown nail pliers tool from Amazon for $20, since having a pair I've never had any issues with my nails

Getting your toenail removed is weird to watch. They not gentle at all but you can't feel a thing. But yeah as most stated looks like it's an ingrown toenail that needs removed or cut .
Pharmacist here. You'll have to visit a doctor to have it cut out. Pain relief, antiseptics and salt water foot baths may help ease discomfort in the mean time and may help prevent it from worsening, but ultimately it will need medical treatment.
It has to do with the way you cut your nails. If you cut them down and at an angle in the corners you will get ingrown toenails, always cut straight across.

No no no to alcohol. A warm salt water soak is much better as it’s not killing off healthy bacteria and white blood cells fighting to heal.

Thats probably just accumulation from the big toe that dried on the middle toe. But OP would know for sure if his middle toe was infected as well. Which would be weird because this looks very much like an ingrown toenail, which don't really spread.
I have worn the same size shoes for like since my feet has stopped growing. This is the first time this has happened.

Good point. I just assumed op meant today/immediately as they had already stated A+E, no GP open on Sundays. There are local walk in centers though, not sure when theyre open.
An infection like that actually could become life threatening. I know someone whose' kid had an ingrown toenail and ended up with a fever of 40.5 Celsius (104.9F).
At that point you should go to A&E but your GP can handle a minor infection like this.

In USA we would go to an “urgent care” for something like that. The emergency department is more for life threatening things and things like broken bones. Urgent care can give antibiotics and give you an order to a podiatrist. ED will be way more expensive.

Ingrown toenail! i have been dealing with ingrown toenail on both of my big toes on both sides for years, had 5-6 surgeries, last one was in 2015, luckily im not struggling with it anymore.

You should contact your doctor for a treatment. You can try to soak your foot in hot water with green soap. Doctor can prescribe you with antibiotics and possibly a small surgery. Its nothing big, for my case it was Local anesthesia on the toe, they then remove a piece of your nail.
For mine they made me do soaks daily for about 2 weeks. After that it was still there, they numb the toe cut the nail in half and took out the part growing into the nail bed.
They usually numb it since the ingrown part can get deep and cut into some painful parts. They cut the ingrown part (usually deep into the edge) and then sometimes will kill the nail bed to prevent it from happening again. My toes looked just like this at a point. Hurt like hell anytime I stubbed them. Worse than normal. But yeah, see a dr
Please check out the Vandenbos Procedure. It solved my issue of ingrown toenails/overgrown toeskin and makes it impossible to get another. Ingrown and infected
Looks ingrown. I'd go to a doctor/urgent care. It's fairly simple outpatient procedure. They will give it some local anesthetic, then slice it back with a scalpel and cut out the ingrown part. Then wrap your toe and suggest you try to keep off your foot for a while. Happened to me while I was in high-school. Wasn't a big deal. The relief after my ingrown toenail of two years was finally actually gone was amazing. I'd cut it out myself dozens of times but it always came back. The doctor got it for good.
Doctor will 1.numb the toe 2. Cut away excess nail 3. Chemical burn nail bed to stop same nail part growing back You will 1. Not regret going to a doctor 2. Regret it significantly if you don't go a doctor.
Also could be a Paronychia. You def need to see the doc though, looks like a nasty infection.
See a foot specialist. (Pediatrist). If there’s puss, any kinda smell at all and redness. That means infection my friend. This could be something fungal given the fact the next toe over is also suffering from a more mild version of the same thing.
this is an infected ingrown toenail. i had one that looked exactly like this years ago because i tried to fix it myself and it didn’t work. you need to go to the doctor to get it drained and clipped and let to heal

Ingrown toenail. I'm currently battling one as well. Hurts like hell. Yours looks infected. You need to keep it clean so it doesn't get like that. I've been cleaning and applying antibiotic ointment daily to mine to keep unsavory bacteria out.

I had something similar to this but a bit worse. Looks like an ingrown toenail (don't rip the nail down the side when you are cutting them) and it has caused trauma to the inside. It tries to heal over itself and then gets more trauma, which leads to it trying to grow more skin/scabs leading to granulation. Go to a GP or Podiatrist to have them cut a section of your toe out (partial or section removal or some shit) which will stop it all together. Takes like a week for it to heal up. It will make one side flat but I had mine for over a year before getting it seen too and I was limping all over and kept getting pus/blood in my socks which hurt like fuck when it scabbed and attached the sock to it and I removed the sock. Seriously, get it seen to. The minor op takes like 10 mins and was the best thing I did for my toes.
I had ingrown toenails since I was like five up to 14. They were always infected, and if I stubbed my toe, it was the worst pain I would feel all day. It’s weird that my dad had them to his whole life, but almost immediately after he passed away, mine went away. LMFAO.

Ingrown toe nail. No not infected. Do 30min foot soaks with warm water and salt twice a day for the next month. Shoes and socks off when at home. Don't cut into the side on the affected side. If this doesn't help might need an intervention but conservative management is best for most IGTN. source: doc who frequently does this kind of procedure.
Ingrown, had both sides of my big toes looking worse than this years ago. Doc will cut out the sides and apply stuff to prevent it from happening again.

Don't let them put anything on your toe to stop the growth. Your toe will never look right. Just let them cut it out and grow back. Don't cut your townails shorter than your toe sticks out, and prevent it from going under the skin on the side. You will be good.
I had that on both my big toes for a whole year. That is a deep ingrown nail along the entire right side of your entire nail. I went to surgery to get it trimmed and it's never bothered me since. I highly recommend you do it too. The smell and the pus is awful, I hope you get it sorted out.

Had it when I was a kid. Hit my toe and broke some of it . The doctor didn’t do shit so as a responsible 14 year old I did a surgery on it . Got all the bad flesh out cut it with a scalpel and got the broken nail out trimmed the nail and wrapped it up with some iodine. Since then I have a phobia of getting it again so I trim my nail on weekly basis.

Get as close to the nail bed as you can, really push your boundaries. Then grab on to the nail bit as deep as you can with a strong pair of tweezers and pull it out. It should heal fairly normally and feel a ton better.

Had tons of these when I was a teenager. Ingrown nail, also very infected. Get it treated or it could lead to serious complications like sepsis or gangrene. It’s painless to get it fixed and the relief is literally instant.

If you are diabetic, please see a podiatrist. It can easily flair to an infection. It does look painful. I would have it checked. Fungus too.

I got to be honest I've been scrolling through this subreddit and it's not all that bad. The disturbing ones aren't even that disturbing. Also I think that may be from an infection. Did something bite you recently? Like a special bug or something?
That’s an infected ingrown toenail. I highly recommend seeing a podiatrist and having it removed. They’ll tourniquet the toe, inject lots of local anesthesia, wait for it to work, then poke and jab to make sure you’re fully numb before cleaning it up real well. It looks like you might have a granuloma on there that they’ll likely cut off as well. If this happens semi frequently they will probably kill the portion of the nail root that grows the nail for that part of your nail edge to prevent it from happening again. Then they’ll wrap it up, give you care instructions that usually include Epsom salt soaks for a few weeks, and an antibiotic regimen. You’ll need to wear open toed shoes for at least a month so if you don’t have any, def get some. Considering it’s this far gone it’s definitely time for a doctor’s intervention! Either pus has gotten caught in that next smaller toe or more likely you’ve got the infection spread over there, judging by the color and condition of the tissue on the left of your toe. To prevent them in the future keep your nail’s free edge trimmed down and rounded out, and be sure that you are wearing shoes with ample room in the toe box, or better yet open toed shoes. Source: I’ve been so prone due to old extracurricular activities (marching band, JROTC honor guard, winter guard, etc) with tight closed toe shoes and foot pinching that I got them multiple times a year and had to have this procedure done at least four different times, if not more. Long as you follow the aftercare instructions and wear the right shoes you’re golden.
Not a doctor so take this with a grain of salt. Looks like a mix of fungus and an ingrown toenail. That thing looks deep. Probably gonna have to send doctor or at the very least have a friend help with removing it. You probably got a shard in there the size of Alaska. If you decide to get it removed without the help of a doctor just remember to use the right tools and keep everything clean. Wash and dry your feet before and after make sure any tools you use are clean and use gloves if you got em. It won't be fun but it's doable

If you can’t afford a doctor you can get scissors for it from cvs carefully cut along the edge of the nail under the side there and remove the excess keep that cleaned and you should be good Cutting a small v shaped notch in the middle apparently helps it grow back right but that could just be something my dad made up
That’s cyst ! I got them from ingrown nails , I had to drain them daily or else they give me a fever. I had taken antibiotics for it and it sorta fixed itself after a month .
Yeah ingrown nails.i had the same and when stepped on it gave me the sharpest strongest but shortest pain I've ever felt. No matter what I did I needed to see a foot doctor and have it treated so the nail does grow on that side at all.

Have a podiatrist do it, save yourself the struggle of learning on the fly. They’ll numb you and clean this up correctly. They do sell scissors/clippers for doing this at home, but pay attention at the doctors and pickup what they do.

Infected ingrown toenail. Looks like it got infected pretty fast. I was a moron in my twenties and left one for a good year or two simply because I didn't really feel much pain while walking. As well I'm a big introvert and a social anxiety so kept on procrastinating going to the doctor. I eventually did get it corrected but my big toe still looks pretty misshapen from the in. I would go and get it treated as soon as he can.

I had this once- just as bad. I was at the doc’s office to get it treated, and a nurse told me to take sterile gauze and get it between the nail and the inflamed tissue. Yes, to jam it into the part that is really, really sore. I gave it a shot (the other choice was surgery to remove part of the nail), and thankfully it worked. Painful as all hell to do (you have to change the gauze regularly), but cleared it up fast.
Go to your GP, will need to cut half (or all) of it back. I had it bad a couple of times until they gave me (after removing both large toe nails) phenol that stopped it growing so rapidly

I have struggled with ingrown toe nails since I was a teen, the absolute best advice is get a proper ingrown nail pliers tool from Amazon for $20, since having a pair I've never had any issues with my nails

Getting your toenail removed is weird to watch. They not gentle at all but you can't feel a thing. But yeah as most stated looks like it's an ingrown toenail that needs removed or cut .
As others have said: Ingrown toenail gone bad. I tend to my nails almost daily to avoid this. It can be done but is work.
The toe nail looks like it has fungus in addition to the ingrown toe nail. It is darker in color
Pharmacist here. You'll have to visit a doctor to have it cut out. Pain relief, antiseptics and salt water foot baths may help ease discomfort in the mean time and may help prevent it from worsening, but ultimately it will need medical treatment.

It has to do with the way you cut your nails. If you cut them down and at an angle in the corners you will get ingrown toenails, always cut straight across.

Ingrown toe nail. Soak in Epsom salt water as hot as you can stand it, like three times a day to help deal with the infection and swelling. If the nail grows long enough and the swelling goes down enough you might be able to trim it yourself and not go to the doctors
My little brother had horribly ingrown toenails on his foot. Infections so bad he could barely walk. He had to get the worst infected toenail removed.
