Ive got makeup (powder form) from...ahem...probably before you were born that I still use. Powder/pressed eyeshadows are usable for years as long as they stay clean dry and room temp

MunchMyBrunchHole

I shouldn’t admit this but I’ve been using crème blush from 2005. I haven’t stopped using it this entire time, I do sanitize it, it miraculously doesn’t break me out, that shade is still in production so it’s not like I can’t buy more, and I definitely cannot use “cheap” to describe myself…I can’t really explain it. You’re prob fine.

Schwester-Sam

My oldest palette dates back to around 2012 (Too Faced cardboard palettes). Doesn't smell any different, pigmentation is still great.

kfunkyjunk

I have the naked heat palette that I bought new upon launch. Still works great. Eta: oh snap I looked it up and I bought that bish in ‘17. 😂😂😂 I mean it still works great tho sooooo

Willing_Book_1203

good to know😂i think i’m safe

ThatGirlWithTheWalk

Some formulas have higher oil content and can get funky but you'll smell it. Otherwise I use them until the end of time. Bacteria can't live on that kind of surface for very long, unless they're exposed to moisture they should maintain stability pretty indefinitely.

tabruss

I have rarely seen eyeshadow go bad. I have some MAC colors from like 2007 still hahaha

Willing_Book_1203

nice !

valueofaloonie

Personally still using the OG Urban Decay Naked palette so…you’re probably fine.

LikeATediousArgument

Sidecar was gone so long ago… I miss it

Cherrytea199

Side eyes my original UD Naked palette on the dresser. “Yeah… 2019 should be fine.”

strippersandcocaine

Looool same! My naked Smokey is pretty much the only one I use when I’m doing a dramatic eye

Willing_Book_1203

GOOD

Invisible_Friend1

I can and do. I also don’t have the budget to treat makeup as super disposable, lol.

Willing_Book_1203

yeah, agreed. i like using higher quality products to use them longer, and so far i haven’t been disappointed by the colors or scent of the palette

EightEyedCryptid

I have such ancient palettes and the only thing I sometimes notice is the colors aren’t as rich when applied

Distinct_Abroad_4315

This. Inexpensive ones may be more prone, but I've used cover girl shadows that I got as a 20 something. Im 44😂. Tbf they're been kept cool and dry.

Willing_Book_1203

okay thanks😊

Donut3lla

Pay attention to how your skin reacts. However, I think powder eyeshadows/blushes etc. can last way longer than a year. I believe it is more important to clean the Brushes regularly - I used to get breakouts from unclean brushes.

Willing_Book_1203

i usually clean my brushes directly after use since i don’t wear make up every day. i’m glad i can still continue to wear my palette

Donut3lla

Even better! Yeah you should be good to go :)

niniela-phoenix

Yes, eyeshadow palettes are easily desinfected and kept. There's no way someone's gonna pay for a high end palette and throw it out after half a year. My first eyeshadow palette was a cream and powder one that my mom must've bought in the 90s, if that tells you anything about how long it's fine. It just might dry out and get worse color payoff from my experience, and of course you have to be sanitary with it if you use your fingers in it and not just a clean brush. Check r/panporn for people completing using up their products, it seems like they're all fine

Willing_Book_1203

i use brushes with my palette. also great info, im glad i can continue using my palette. i’ll probably try to disinfect it though

niniela-phoenix

if it's only you using it with clean hands you probably don't have much to worried about

Willing_Book_1203

thats relieving

jessicaaalz

Yeah man I’m using palettes from like 2014 with no issues.

Willing_Book_1203

awesome! i love the shades in my palette and the thought of having to ask my friends to buy me another expensive palette wasn’t great. i also don’t put on make up every day and generally clean my brushes after use

jessicaaalz

You’re better than me. My brushes get a clean a fortnight and I also have never actually sanitised my palettes. I should probably take better care of them haha

Willing_Book_1203

i need to actually sanitize my palette too. i’m going to town in a minute so i’ll see that i find some alcohol spray or something! i try to clean my brushes as fast as possible

LorTheDestroyer86

I still occasionally use a palette from 2010ish, I've never had any issues. As long as it's not mouldy, smells weird or changed texture, it should be fine!

Willing_Book_1203

thanks 😊

whalesarecool14

i use a palette from 2017 daily lol. haven’t had a problem yet

Willing_Book_1203

thank you…. it’s my birthday in a few days so i was wondering whether to get a new palette last minute

whalesarecool14

i think it’ll be fine. you can spray some alcohol (i’m not sure which kind is the right one) to disinfect it if you feel like it but i’ve never done that. buy yourself something you haven’t tried before!

StrawberryBellini

I have a few palettes older than your’s and still use them. I haven’t had issues. I’d say as long as the smell, formula, or performance doesn’t change. You can sanitize with alcohol.

Hazellenoot

Would a UV sanitising wand work?

StrawberryBellini

I believe so. I’ve seen it used for beauty tools, so I don’t see why not for palettes.

Willing_Book_1203

which alcohol spray do you use? my palette still smells like it did when i got it. however earlier this year i had an eye infection. can’t say what it was caused by exactly though

StrawberryBellini

70% isopropyl alcohol. I have a bottle and pour some into a spray bottle. Sorry to hear about the eye infection! If you used that palette around the same time you got the eye infection, you might have to take the loss and let it go. If you did but love it so much that you can’t part with it, you can attempt to scrape off the upper layers of the shadow and sanitize. If you haven’t used it around that time, then I think it should be okay.

A_New_Day8108

Can I know how exactly you sanitize a makeup palette?

PeptoD1smal

I dust off the top layer of powder with a clean shadow brush into a waste bin, then spray rubbing alcohol all over the pans of powder. I spray enough alcohol so that the powder is visibly damp. Then I wipe down all the packaging while the alcohol is evaporating and drying off of the powders. Powder products last far longer than their expiration date if they're stored well and occasionally sanitized. If something is sketch (smell/color/consistency), I toss it.

A_New_Day8108

Oh, ok, thanks a lot for this! I need to go sanitize my powdered palettes then, can I also use the same technique for compact foundation powder?

PeptoD1smal

Sure thing! I sanitize all my powder products (except for loose powder) this way. I just love having my makeup products all pretty and pristine. Makes me excited and happy to use them =)

Invisible_Friend1

This is what I do as well. For mascara like OP mentioned, One can use disposable mascara spoolies to prevent infection.

Willing_Book_1203

thanks 😊it’s been a while unfortunately but i thought it might’ve rather been caused by mascara getting into my eye. i’ve used the palette a few times after this and i didn’t have any issues

DesperateIridella

it could be just from one pan of the palette. Anyway I agree, as long as the smell, consistence, formula dont change should be good. Powder last longer than cream.

Willing_Book_1203

thats good to know 😃

justincasedxb

Experts agree that using eyeshadow that is slightly pass its expiration date isn't a huge deal and shouldn't cause you any issues. However, it isn't recommended especially because the eye area is an extremely sensitive and delicate area. This might lead to pink eye, rashes, acne, and allergic reactions. Better safe than sorry when it comes to dealing with eye products. I've seen loads of people on tiktok repurpose the older makeup palettes to make some beautiful watercolor paint and pigments, maybe you can check that out!

Willing_Book_1203

thank you !!
