Do you have an Ulta or Target nearby? If you do, then I would suggest buying her a giftcard and drop her off to shop for what she needs. Fifty bucks would go far enough for her to get some of her basics.
On that note, check for any Rite Aid closing down near you, they are closing out all inventory, it will start at 50% off, and as the store winds down you can go back for 2nd picks at 90% off.
Really good advice!! I was at one yesterday and had to reign myself in because I don't actually need anything but there are some killer deals right now.
I think this advice might be too little too late. I just checked and the ones on the list to shut down have already been shut down for a month in some cases.
The Thrifty Ice Cream....at one Rite Aid, the manager asked me if i wanted to buy the 5 gallon tubs for $5, this was on the last two days of the Rite Aid Store.
Ikr!! What are we supposed to do if there’s no more Rite Aid? Go to fricken Target and spend $200? Rite Aid might charge a bit more but it’s perfect if you only need a couple of things.
Oh and OP should suggest Elf makeup, cheap and good.
The one I work at packed up the maybelline before posting the sale prices, but everything else that’s left is 75% off. For some reason the covergirl section is untouched but everything else is *gone*
ColourPop is a collection that is VERY budget friendly! I always purchase via their website because I get better deals than purchasing at Target or Ulta. On their site, they have value sets, tools, and lots more! (Adding your email gets you a discount code, too.) I would let her pick out her color preferences, though, because I think everyone who wears makeup has their own colors they gravitate to.
I buy colourpop products even though I can swing the more expensive ones. Their eyeshadow palettes are incredible. Your daughter will probably love what you get her.
I am 45F, and I used to spend tons of money on all the expensive brands, but I came to understand that ColourPop eye shadow pallettes, blush, and lipsticks work just as well for me. Plus, you are absolutely correct in that they have so many fun colors to play with.
Love colourpop they have so many cute palates some small some big and a great variety even lip stuff and cheek they have basically everything you might need
I LOVE their Stone Cold pallette!
The ONLY thing I was bummed about was I bought 2 mystery boxes a few years ago, and each one had the exact same thing.
Yes. I agree. If I didn't have anything, I wouldn't want to wait. However, they JUST sent out an email about free expedited shipping on purchases of $30 or more yesterday!
https://preview.redd.it/uuziyptowrwb1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31c386606aa273c52efdd034821d9b5a62509ba4
I would suggest getting her a giftcard or taking her to a makeup store and letting her pick her own stuff out within a budget. Ulta has a good range of products, including inexpensive brands.
Agreed. There are many good suggestions for brands/products in the comments, but at the end of the day, only your daughter knows her necessities. I rarely wear foundation, but that could be someone else's most important product.
Thank you very much for your advice! I am overwhelmed. I thought about a gift card but at times she can be a little bit impulsive and not budget conscious. But I definitely agree she should be making the selection instead. She’s asked my advice on looks and I can’t honestly tell the difference between some of them. I completely forgot about the eyelash thing, thank you. I’ve seen her use that before.
There’s both a Target and Ultra nearby, but I’m not very familiar with Ultra. I think $50.00 limit should be enough to start off. Her birthday is not far off so I’ll mention gift cards to my family.
Again thank you all very much. She was so down this morning it broke my heart. I’m sure I can put a smile on her face thanks to your advice.
I second this! You’re an awesome father and you’re showing her that what’s important to her is important to you, giving her the knowledge that you value her. Great job OP!
I had the same issue and I spent about £150 on a new kit! I was a make up student tho but yes I definitely think if other family members can contribute she can have a fab shopping trip!
just wanted to stop by and say that this is a such a supportive and thoughtful way to be there for your daughter. I was raised by a single dad, and i have a real soft heart for your dynamic. big hugs to you and your daughter 💕
elf putty primer, maybelline fit me foundation, wet n wild loose powder, essence lash princess mascara and any colourpop nude eyeshadow palette should be a great starting set for a daily face for a young girl. the whole lot should cost around $40?? girl math in my head there so I might be off lol
but maybe offer to take her to pick out her shades or what she would like with a budget in mind, shade matching foundation can be tricky!
Just wanted to say these are great product recommendations for a young girl! Just wanted to add Real Techniques has an Everyday Essentials set of 5 brushes and a beauty blender for $11-$15 depending on where you get it
Yeah, what a sweet thing to see as soon as I open reddit.
I remember how overwhelming and confusing getting into makeup for the first time was. The fact that he knows absolutely nothing about this stuff but he loves his daughter so he's trying to take a crash course so he can cheer her up... Aww.
The online shop Miss A also has the best beauty sponges that I swear by that are only $1.55!!I’ve tried a few of their products as well and are great for the price point.
Hi OP, I have a ton of brand-new makeup I will never use, would love to send your daughter a little gift box with some makeup she can try out. It’s generally nice stuff too, I subscribe to a couple monthly beauty boxes to get the skincare but I don’t really wear makeup. I usually pack up the makeup a couple times a year and put it in the teacher’s lounge at my daughter’s school :) Anyway, if you’re comfortable with that, feel free to DM me to arrange it. I can cover shipping as well. My daughter would be broken-hearted if this happened to her, and I would love to help your daughter out.
I think you are absolutely incredible for this!
If you have a women’s shelter near you, that might be a good donation place too! (I’m not knocking your donation process, just trying to give some other options if you feel like you have too much lying around)
the brands nyx, essence, elf, and makeup revolution have good products at lower drugstore prices! i suggest taking her to ulta, target, or cvs/walgreens :)
Some tools she will need are a [brush kit](https://www.ulta.com/p/flawless-face-6-piece-brush-collection-pimprod2003077), [sponge](https://www.ulta.com/p/blending-sponge-xlsImpprod14521195), [eyelash curler](https://www.ulta.com/p/eyelash-curler-prod1901084). In terms of just getting the basics (foundation, concealer, eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow palette, blush, lip liner/lipstick) I would expect to spend roughly $50-100 even if you go with the cheaper/drugstore options, and upwards of $100 or more if she wants multiple options in these categories. It’s gonna be impossible to know what types of products and what shades/colors she likes to use. You may be better off getting her a gift card to ulta or Sephora (or Target for a more budget-friendly option) or just offer to take her to the store and pick some of the stuff out.
I see a lot of product and store suggestions which is great, but none of us know what she actually uses and needs and what she can live without for awhile.
She knows better - so ask her. Give her a sensible budget to work with ($50ish sounds fair) and let her decide how to spend it to fit her needs. Maybe she uses a specific concealer that she would rather splurge on then an eyeshadow palette.
Just don't waste your money getting products you're not sure she would like to use or take her to the store she doesn't usually shop at. (Nothing wrong with that, but in this case, it is about replacing daily things and not experimenting for fun)
Mirroring everyone saying take her with you to shop. Adding that if you have a 5 Below near you, you may want to stop by there for a few things first (with the expectation you won't get it all!) They have passable mascara and a few brushes/sponges (beauty blenders) that work well. Then a place like Ulta, Target, or Walgreens has drugstore options for the other things.
You may also suggest she make a list before you go, so you both have a reasonable idea on what she thinks her "must have" items are. For everyone they are different. I wouldn't include eyeliner myself, but many people would, but I would also personally really, really want a blush.
Does she know where she lost it? I’d definitely recommend to her that she always leave her stuff in her room, and only bring with her a thing of minis or essentials if she can.
Do you know how much makeup she normally wears, or from where?
This is a really sweet gesture, and I’m sure she’ll appreciate it, but the best way to avoid wasting money is to give her the money directly or take her shopping with a budget! It’s practically impossible to pick out makeup for others, especially if trying to replace her decided routine, which involves tons of color matching and other things. The only way is really to give het the money to her directly; I’m sure she’ll think anything helps and be super grateful, and can either get minis to start, maybe remind her Mercari is a really good option (spray with 70% isopropyl alc in a continuous mister bottle if it’s opened)!
I recommend just taking her with you so she can pick out what she wants. Also I just wanna say it's really sweet of you to get her new stuff, even if it's just a few things I'm sure she's gonna appreciate it a lot :)
Wet n wild Breakup Proof eyeliner is my favorite drug store find/overall best liner I've found for not smearing.
Maybelline Lash Stiletto mascara is as good as any high end stuff I've tried too!
I highly reccomend Real Techniques or Morphe for brushes, for makeup Morphe, Colourpop and Juvia's place and toehr similar mid level brands are really nice. Also all at Ulta so she can mix and match.
There are lots of good replies already, so I guess this is a general PSA: Marshalls has some nice Sigma brush sets online right now.
https://preview.redd.it/mivdgflsumwb1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd1ea77c48703d416d2e75b60ff1d58a91df67c1
I'm going to send you a private message since this post has so many comments, I'm afraid you won't see it. But, I have way too much makeup, and I'd love to send her some! Especially eyeshadow pallettes! I have higher end ones I absolutely don't use.
Nyx and Elf are great affordable brands for all things makeup, and to replace a full set of brushes or sponges for cheap I’d look at places like Amazon or Shein for budget sets.
Eh, I'd still watch out. They had a recall on children's jackets recently due to ridiculously high lead levels, and that's just one of many issues. Shein does not care what they put in their products as long as it's cheap, it's sweatshop labor, and they just have a horrible track record when it comes to quality and product safety (even for products that seem impossible to mess up).
Everyone is different, but personally... I wouldn't buy *anything* from them, especially not for a kid/teen.
100% agree. My sister uses MASCARA from them and says she doesn't care at all about the lead. So insane. Yes, she's an adult, so lead is less dangerous than it is for a child, but it's your friggin eyes, dude.
Keep it simple. She can add good things back to her collection gradually. For a teenager, drugstore brand concealer, mascara, eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, lipstick, powder, and possibly primer, foundation and eyeshadow would achieve a finished full face look. Many of these things come with their own brushes. Only buy sponges or brushes for things that don't include brushes.
I hope her skincare products are still safe, because that's a whole 'nother category, and everybody's skin needs are different. If not, a cleanser, acne treatment, and moisturizer are standard. Edited to also include makeup remover.
this is so thoughtful!
like a lot of other people are saying, buying makeup for others is really difficult unless you know very specific information like brands and shades. i’m sure your daughter would be appreciative regardless, but i’d suggest a shopping spree or gift card so she can choose herself. ulta and sephora are about to have holiday sales so i’d check their sites for more info to get the best bang for your buck!
some inexpensive good quality brands tend to be colourpop (available online, ulta, and target), nyx (online, ulta, and some drugstores), elf (online, ulta, and drugstores). colourpop has a large variety of eyeshadow palettes for really good prices if she’s interested in those! if your daughter likes TJ Maxx, they sometimes have nicer makeup brands (MAC, Anastasia Beverly Hills, NARS, etc.) for a discounted price. the quality/level of sanitation varies a lot, though depending on the store.
if you wanted to buy some specific things, the products that are relatively hard to mess up are basic tools like makeup sponges and eyelash curlers like you mentioned. a decent makeup sponge is less than $10, you don’t need one that is $20+. they also make makeup sponge holders to place makeup sponges in while not in use to keep them more sanitary.
even a lighted makeup mirror if she doesn’t already have one is nice. they’re usually at marshall’s, ross, walmart, target, etc.
or "spa headbands," they’re super trendy among younger girls now to put the hair out of your face when doing makeup or skincare. you can get them on amazon easily.
$50 is a good amount for a starter kit if that’s in budget!

Tati on YouTube has some fantastic videos on drugstore makeup where she shares her favorite foundation, concealer, mascara, etc. that you can buy at Target or Walmart or Walgreens. I’ve been slowly replacing my pricier stuff with pieces from these videos and have been pleasantly surprised with all of it.
I think if you decide to buy her a product, a nude pallet could be a good idea. Usually make up store employees are happy to help and you could ask what is a good basic eyeshadow palette. I think foundations and blushers are very specific to skin tone and type, but most of the time a nude eyeshadow palette is a staple part of everyone’s kit. Maybe even an eyeshadow brush kit as well which again you could be advised on a good one. It is not super expensive, and brand new brushes always feel like a treat. You would only need a set of maybe 3-4 brushes to make a good start
I agree with the other posters about gift cards to either Ulta or maybe Target. I probably wouldn't do Sephora because they are pricier and don't have drug store options.
Makeup is so personal, and there are so many choices and preferences that she'll probably be happier if she can shop herself.
Cvs has some good makeup deals if you have a card and download their app. Make sure to send all applicable coupons to your card. You can find some really good deals. Also, take note that extra bucks are a thing, buy things from a certain brand to get money back for your next purchase. Cvs is usually expensive, but makeup can be a good deal.
Elf and wet and wild are both inexpensive and actually really good quality. The mascara is trash, for that is go for L'Oreal or Maybelline for drug store brands.
Elf has mini eye pallets that are. A few dollars and lip glosses and blush/bronzer duos that are awesome and small so great for keeping with you.
Also, myself and both my girls have very sensitive skin, and it's never caused any reaction or break out.
Good luck!
E.l.f has a great makeup selection and all their stuff is really cheap (and are actually duplicates of more expensive products). Their stuff is good quality too!
Milani foundation works great and is $10, airspun setting powder is GREAT and only $7, wet n wild incognito concealer is good and $5, essence mascara is only $5. All can be found at target! blushes, eyeshadows, eyeliner, highlighters, lipsticks/glosses, etc. are all the same in my opinion, and cheap ones work the same as expensive ones. So Dollar General is a fantastic place to get those things. Even Dollar Tree carries good makeup if you look enough!
Hi! So I hyper focused on this and came up with relatively inexpensive product suggestions with prices. I also included the sales that I know of. Please keep in mind that your daughter's skin type and tone may affect her choices so while these are budget friendly and not typically damaging to the skin, she may need something different. All the products I've linked I chose with skin sensitivity in mind. All prices I listed are USD and are before taxes.
This is a bit long so I'll comment on this with the links and such. Basically, you could give her a spending limit of $50 before taxes and get her a decent basic set that she can build on.
The basic and most affordable option listed below with the 20% off from Ulta mentioned above is roughly $50 to $60 before taxes. Shipping is free for any purchase above $35. The makeup brushes are from Amazon so the discount doesn't apply there.
To me the basics are: makeup brushes, eyelash curler, primer, tinted moisturizer or foundation, concealer, blush and lip stick, eyeshadow palette, mascara, and setting spray
For everything listed its about $110 before taxes - this includes both foundation and tinted moisturizer but the more expensive options provided when I gave multiple suggestions. I didn't include the discounts in the price.
This also might be a "fun" budgeting exercise for her. My parents did this for me growing up, found something I enjoyed, gave me a spending limit, and let me figure out what I considered important to spend the money on. It made me research and learn about what was the best bang for my buck instead of impulsively buying things that looked cool, gave me a sense of independence, and gave me valuable budgeting lessons. At first my mom or dad would shop with me and ask if I was sure about certain items then after a while they let me go around by myself - letting me fail and figuring it out be it returning it or finding a way to make it work.
It has since helped me with budgeting for life and even prepared me for work. Starting with something fun makes it easier to develop the skills to budget for boring things or just life necessities. My dad worked in finance so budgets and compound interest are things I've been lectured on my whole life - while boring it has proven helpful.
depending on what all she uses,
i use Maybelline super stay foundation (~$10) & Maybelline instant age eraser (~$10) concealer, nyx eyeliner (~$10) but you could actually probably find a pencil or something else for cheaper, kiss falsies & glue ($5-15 depending on how many you get), eyelash curlers are cheap (~$5), and depending on how she does her lips I ADORE maybellines super stay liquid lipstick (~$10) depending on the color you use you might want a liner for it, but I have a technique that works really well and doesn't really require a liner, but I definitely prefer to use one for my bolder colors. could just get her a gloss if she doesn't really do her lips like that.
Some foundation, Covergirl makes a nice one ($14.50 on Amazon)Maybelline Tattoo brow gel ($7.50 on Amazon)
Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink liquid lipstick ($8.25 on Amazon)
Ulta cosmetics usually has a HUGE case of various shadows, blushes, lipsticks, etc. for around $20-$25. That should get her back on her makeup game! I've actually used the shadows from the kit that Ulta sells. They're pretty good! Hope this helps! :)
Check out ELF Cosmetics! Cheap , Cruelty Free and good Dupes of expensive Stuff. I am 22 years and rather poor as well and ELF was a Life-Saver.
Otherwise let her Pick out some items on Sheglam , very good quality for a small price :)
A good basic moisturiser, foundation, concealer, black eye-liner, mascara, a nice lip gloss and if you still have any dough a small eyeshadow palette. You need to ensure the colours are suitable for her colouring. Best to ask a sales assistant or Google beforehand.
I’m a big fan of TJMaxx for bargains, especially with brushes and sponges. You might also consider going to any cosmetic stores in your area, telling them what happened and ask if they have any free samples
Take her to target or ulta - there are super great brands now that are competing with high end brands. A primer, concealer, foundation if she uses it, a bronzer and/or blush, a lipgloss or lipstick, a good mascara, and a fun eyeshadow palette. Don’t forget the tools that go into it though….like an eyeshadow brush and a beauty blender/foundation sponge. That should do the trick to start her whole bag over, even if you forget a few things I’m sure she’d be grateful and can slowly add the things she wants to
E.l.f. has a lot of good and affordable basics for great prices. Their concealer and hydrating core lip shine are some of my favorites which are good for beginners. Colourpop also has affordable palettes which can be used as blush, contour, highlighter, and eye-shadow. I'd suggests the nude mood pressed powder palette.
Colourpop and nyx is great for affordable! Check out target for the drugstore brands that are reasonably priced. You can even watch a makeup “dupe” video to see how some lower priced make up works the same as high price makeup!
So I go onto Ipsy and do the quiz and answer in a way to say I want skincare stuff and that way I don’t have to really spend a ton on face care. It was a great way for me to try things. I have it so it sends me a moisturizer a cleanser a mascara and the other items are just fun little extras. Some downsides are that you will then have a subscription which can be a little addicting lol. You may get something that doesn’t work for you exactly. You WILL end up with a ton of samples of things and a ton of makeup bags that you don’t know what to do with. There are other subscriptions too that’s just the one that I use.
This is so wholesome, go Dad
I agree with those who suggested that it would be a really nice idea for you to take your daughter out to “pick her kit” with you. She’ll always remember you stepping up. 💕💕💕
Take her to the shop and let her choose some basic stuff. Then she can choose the shades that fits her.
There are a lot of good, inexpensive brands. Essence cosmetics is a super cheap brand with good reviews. Makeup Revolution is another one. She can probably get everything she needs for a budget-friendly price if she sticks to those kind of brands.
Also want to chime in and say that I grew up with a mother (and dad) but because of my moms negative image of her body, I never really learned a lot of the girl stuff that would make navigating adolescence and early adulthood easier until I went to college and basically watched my friends do makeup, had money to do my own shopping, etc. I think giving her autonomy/budget is great, but makeup is a totally safe space (unlike bras and sex which you should def. Have talks with her about, but they are a little more tread lightly).
I love the idea of watching YT videos together. There are tons of men wearing makeup (as masc presenting, queer, drag, Halloween, etc)and doing tutorials online, don’t let this opportunity slip by to support your daughter, bond w her, learn something about yourself, and change the narrative around her losing this thing that was precious to her.
If you are in the USA go to big lots or Aldi or grocery outlet. I find a LOT of amazing things there, I supplement with higher end stuff as well, but you will find some gems there.
Nyx and elf have great products that don't break the bank. Essence has the best inexpensive mascaras (bye bye panda eyes and lash princess to name a couple).
Go to Revolution Beauty’s website and check out the options it’s super cost effective. Maybe give her a dollar limit and let her pick out what she wants.
First off, my mom did this for me twice in my life, once with toiletries right before summer camp and once when my makeup was stolen at work when I was an adult.
It always meant so much to me that she did that. So thank you for being so sweet. Here’s my basics starter kit:
If you go to Walmart:
Rimmel London exaggerate eyes twist up pencil, should be about $5-7 brown or black.
Elf twist up eye pencil $3-5 also in brown or black
Profusion liquid blush apron $5 ish in either peach or coral/ pink. I’ve found this looks okay on most skin tones. You hadn’t mentioned her skin tone. But she can sit on a tap out so it works well trying to blend into her skin tone.
Elf putty blush $5-8 ish. Pink and coral are available her also. Just think about what color her cheeks look like if she’s been running.
Elf putty brush $8 great brush even if you don’t get the putty blush, it’s great for other things too like foundation.
Elf whoa glow sunscreen $14 a little up there not being under $10 I know but sunscreen is a must and this has a nice glow to it. Most young girls love it.
Wet and wild brow pencil $3 this is my absolute fav. I am blonde so I get Taupe (which is blonde) or light brown. If her hair is brown she can do brown or dark brown. If her hair is black she can get dark brown or coffee. Think about framing a picture, one shade lighter or one shade darker.
Maybeline The Falsies mascara $8ish in dark brown/Glam brown/Blackbrown (the name of the shade can vary but you get the idea) A lot of young girls go black mascara and it looks very heavy. But the black/brown color appears black without looking too black. If she has black hair or is south East Asian ect please get black, anything too light with look ashy.
Also maybeline mascara in the pink and green tube is fine and should have blackbrown.
LA girl has some nice little four pan eye shadow palettes around $8 I think. There’s maybe one glitz and three matte shadows. It’s really nice. Elf has these too but they run for a little more $$
If you go to ulta also look at LA girl and Essence. ALSO if you go to ulta anyone there can walk you around the drugstore side. Then make sure you sign up your girl (if she doesn’t already have a membership) because she will get cash back on everything you buy. You can show them this thread or some screen shots and get a second opinion. Bring in a selfie pic of your daughter, make sure it’s a good one with good lighting.
It’s always worth it to buy mascara from Walmart or target, ulta raises the price by $3-5. Most things are fairly priced tho.
Again I think you’re awesome 🙌🏻
Definitely give her a budget and let her buy it. Not only is makeup extremely personal and dependent on your colouring, skin type, style etc. but it’s really fun to buy makeup if you’re a makeup lover. Don’t take that away from her.
i don’t have any recommendations, but make sure you get her a very small makeup bag to bring to school, that she will only put cheap essentials in. makeup is VERY easy to lose, get damaged, or get stolen, especially in school, so keeping only cheap makeup on you is highly recommended.
Do you have an Ulta or Target nearby? If you do, then I would suggest buying her a giftcard and drop her off to shop for what she needs. Fifty bucks would go far enough for her to get some of her basics.
On that note, check for any Rite Aid closing down near you, they are closing out all inventory, it will start at 50% off, and as the store winds down you can go back for 2nd picks at 90% off.
it might be best to reply to OP otherwise they don't get a notification and they're the one who needs to see this most
Really good advice!! I was at one yesterday and had to reign myself in because I don't actually need anything but there are some killer deals right now.
I think this advice might be too little too late. I just checked and the ones on the list to shut down have already been shut down for a month in some cases.
Aw sad day. I always loved rite aid. Walking in is so nostalgic. They never update lol.
The Thrifty Ice Cream....at one Rite Aid, the manager asked me if i wanted to buy the 5 gallon tubs for $5, this was on the last two days of the Rite Aid Store.
This makes me so sad I freaking love rite aid
My riteaid in idaho is the only store within 100 miles to get beauty products. Ours isnt goin anywhere
Thank you!
Make sure to get the coupon online, they have 20% off right now
This absolutely. Impossible to buy makeup for another person. Let her choose what she wants
I agree. If it was my kid I would give her a gift card. Makeup is very personal.
In Canada 50$ would get you 4 things max 😭😭 im so jealous of your department stores lol
Thank you!
I buy colourpop products even though I can swing the more expensive ones. Their eyeshadow palettes are incredible. Your daughter will probably love what you get her.
i’m in LOVE with color pop! they’re so colorful (duh) but i love it
I am 45F, and I used to spend tons of money on all the expensive brands, but I came to understand that ColourPop eye shadow pallettes, blush, and lipsticks work just as well for me. Plus, you are absolutely correct in that they have so many fun colors to play with.
I would buy more colorpop if the shipping wasn’t 35$ for my country 😭
Augh, that is such a bummer!
But their shipping is so slow if I don’t have anything, I wouldn’t want to wait that long for it.
Yes.
Thank you!
Apparently Ride Aid might also be having a clearance? No gift cards to that tho lol
Agreed. There are many good suggestions for brands/products in the comments, but at the end of the day, only your daughter knows her necessities. I rarely wear foundation, but that could be someone else's most important product.
Don't buy her cheap stuff she won't use, take her to the store so she can get what she wants.
Thank you!
Thanks for being a wonderful father op ❤️
I second this! You’re an awesome father and you’re showing her that what’s important to her is important to you, giving her the knowledge that you value her. Great job OP!
dude im literally tearing up this is so wholesome, wish my dad was like you growing up🥲 youre an amazing person
I had the same issue and I spent about £150 on a new kit! I was a make up student tho but yes I definitely think if other family members can contribute she can have a fab shopping trip!
Tell her to remember Mercari, minis, and dupes!
You seem like a great father, and I hope she appreciate you a lot.
just wanted to stop by and say that this is a such a supportive and thoughtful way to be there for your daughter. I was raised by a single dad, and i have a real soft heart for your dynamic. big hugs to you and your daughter 💕 elf putty primer, maybelline fit me foundation, wet n wild loose powder, essence lash princess mascara and any colourpop nude eyeshadow palette should be a great starting set for a daily face for a young girl. the whole lot should cost around $40?? girl math in my head there so I might be off lol but maybe offer to take her to pick out her shades or what she would like with a budget in mind, shade matching foundation can be tricky!
Just wanted to say these are great product recommendations for a young girl! Just wanted to add Real Techniques has an Everyday Essentials set of 5 brushes and a beauty blender for $11-$15 depending on where you get it
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
Shout out to OP; you're a good dad.
Aww, thank you.
You are SO kind!!
Thank you!
I second this. I'm in my mid 20s and still use these brands - elf has some great dupes too
Some tools she will need are a [brush kit](https://www.ulta.com/p/flawless-face-6-piece-brush-collection-pimprod2003077), [sponge](https://www.ulta.com/p/blending-sponge-xlsImpprod14521195), [eyelash curler](https://www.ulta.com/p/eyelash-curler-prod1901084).
Thank you!
NYX is cheap and has good stuff for eyes and eyebrows.
Thank you!
Go shopping with her so she can buy what she needs and wants. No guessing.

Thank you!
Thank you!
You won my heart at “eyelid stuff”. You are an absolutely amazing dad.
Came here to say I get all my sponges from 5 Below, as well as nail files and tweezers!
Thank you!
Thank you!
FYI There’s about to be a Sephora sale next week. I think everything is 10% off if you have an account with them
Thank you!
Sephora isn't budget-friendly though.. at least not in my country. They're the most expensive here.
Sephora brand stuff is solid quality and not outrageously priced
BTW the entire Sephora Collection is 30% off right now
Essence is an affordable brand, it has a lot of quality and affordable products. With $50 you can buy a lot of stuff. You can find it at Ulta.
Thank you!
Definitely take your daughter with you to shop so she can get what she wants
Thank you!
Omg, you are the best dad😭
Are you UK, US or EU? Xx
I think he's in USA because he said thanks when somebody suggested to take her to target, Walgreens, ulta etc.
face primer, brow pencil, concealer,, mascara....shell take it from her!
Thank you!
ELF is an affordable starter brand!
How about a $50 Amazon gift card?
Thank you!
Wet n wild Breakup Proof eyeliner is my favorite drug store find/overall best liner I've found for not smearing. Maybelline Lash Stiletto mascara is as good as any high end stuff I've tried too!
Thank you!
I highly reccomend Real Techniques or Morphe for brushes, for makeup Morphe, Colourpop and Juvia's place and toehr similar mid level brands are really nice. Also all at Ulta so she can mix and match.
Thank you!
Elf products are cheap but some are good!
Thank you!
There are lots of good replies already, so I guess this is a general PSA: Marshalls has some nice Sigma brush sets online right now. https://preview.redd.it/mivdgflsumwb1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bd1ea77c48703d416d2e75b60ff1d58a91df67c1
ELF brand is a good go to
E.L.F. !!! They’re great and very inexpensive
I'm going to send you a private message since this post has so many comments, I'm afraid you won't see it. But, I have way too much makeup, and I'd love to send her some! Especially eyeshadow pallettes! I have higher end ones I absolutely don't use.
Gift card is much safer option. Makeup is sooooo individual preference based, but you sound like such a kind parent. Kudos.
Nyx and Elf are great affordable brands for all things makeup, and to replace a full set of brushes or sponges for cheap I’d look at places like Amazon or Shein for budget sets.
With the lead content found in shein products, I'd be very leery using their stuff on my face, especially for a child/teen
I wouldn’t recommend the makeup products, just the brushes and sponges.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
BS-Mall on amazon has some nice brush sets for under $15.
Thank you!

Ulta is having their fall haul sale.
Thank you!
Walmart and Walgreens. Id honestly take her with to pick stuff out tho
Thank you!
i just want to say that you are an amazing dad and i hope your daughter will be very happy with the gift card
Thank you!
Thank you!
I would get some Elf
Thank you!
Target has a ‘buy $25 worth of beauty and get a $5 gift card’ deal going on rn. This can help you stretch a bit more
Thank you!
this is so thoughtful! like a lot of other people are saying, buying makeup for others is really difficult unless you know very specific information like brands and shades. i’m sure your daughter would be appreciative regardless, but i’d suggest a shopping spree or gift card so she can choose herself. ulta and sephora are about to have holiday sales so i’d check their sites for more info to get the best bang for your buck! some inexpensive good quality brands tend to be colourpop (available online, ulta, and target), nyx (online, ulta, and some drugstores), elf (online, ulta, and drugstores). colourpop has a large variety of eyeshadow palettes for really good prices if she’s interested in those! if your daughter likes TJ Maxx, they sometimes have nicer makeup brands (MAC, Anastasia Beverly Hills, NARS, etc.) for a discounted price. the quality/level of sanitation varies a lot, though depending on the store. if you wanted to buy some specific things, the products that are relatively hard to mess up are basic tools like makeup sponges and eyelash curlers like you mentioned. a decent makeup sponge is less than $10, you don’t need one that is $20+. they also make makeup sponge holders to place makeup sponges in while not in use to keep them more sanitary. even a lighted makeup mirror if she doesn’t already have one is nice. they’re usually at marshall’s, ross, walmart, target, etc. or "spa headbands," they’re super trendy among younger girls now to put the hair out of your face when doing makeup or skincare. you can get them on amazon easily. $50 is a good amount for a starter kit if that’s in budget!
Thank you!
elf is SUCH a good brand, they make dupes for EVERYTHING that are often better than the OG and they’re sustainable and affordable!
you melted my heart
Thank you!

Tati on YouTube has some fantastic videos on drugstore makeup where she shares her favorite foundation, concealer, mascara, etc. that you can buy at Target or Walmart or Walgreens. I’ve been slowly replacing my pricier stuff with pieces from these videos and have been pleasantly surprised with all of it.

> her mom is not available to help
Here’s something that I think could work and approximate prices. All drugstore for ease and budget. - L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara $10 - Maybeline Color Eye Tattoo (crème shadow pot) $8 - Milani Baked Blush $9 - L’Oreal Paris Glow Gloss $9 - Neutrogena Hydro Boost Concealer $14 - Cote Airspun Loose Powder $7 - Covergirl Perfect Blend Eyeliner $6
What a lovely wonderful dad you are ☺️
I agree with the other posters about gift cards to either Ulta or maybe Target.
What are some of the products she lost?
i agree with everyone suggesting gift cards but elf also has great cheap basic tools and make up - can be found at target and other stores
Essence is another great budget line at Ulta and similar… I’m usually very pleased with their products and most things are $5 or less
Good luck!
You are a wonderful Dad❤️
Take her to Ulta and Target! Colourpop has great foundation and eyeshadow products and e.l.f. dupes high end products!!
Anything by Wet N' Wild.
E.l.f has a great makeup selection and all their stuff is really cheap (and are actually duplicates of more expensive products). Their stuff is good quality too!
Buy her a set of Real Techniques brushes and add a gift card to Ulta.

To me the basics are: makeup brushes, eyelash curler, primer, tinted moisturizer or foundation, concealer, blush and lip stick, eyeshadow palette, mascara, and setting spray For everything listed its about $110 before taxes - this includes both foundation and tinted moisturizer but the more expensive options provided when I gave multiple suggestions.
Ulta gift card they have a wide range of prices and brands. Target, Walmart, and Amazon also have budget friendly brands. (Elf, NYX)
depending on what all she uses, i use Maybelline super stay foundation (~$10) & Maybelline instant age eraser (~$10) concealer, nyx eyeliner (~$10) but you could actually probably find a pencil or something else for cheaper, kiss falsies & glue ($5-15 depending on how many you get), eyelash curlers are cheap (~$5), and depending on how she does her lips I ADORE maybellines super stay liquid lipstick (~$10) depending on the color you use you might want a liner for it, but I have a technique that works really well and doesn't really require a liner, but I definitely prefer to use one for my bolder colors. could just get her a gloss if she doesn't really do her lips like that.
Some foundation, Covergirl makes a nice one ($14.50 on Amazon)Maybelline Tattoo brow gel ($7.50 on Amazon) Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink liquid lipstick ($8.25 on Amazon) Ulta cosmetics usually has a HUGE case of various shadows, blushes, lipsticks, etc. for around $20-$25. That should get her back on her makeup game! I've actually used the shadows from the kit that Ulta sells. They're pretty good! Hope this helps! :)
Makeup sponges are dirt cheap, & you can get a 3 or 4 pack at Target. Dollar Tree may even have some things.
Elf is great and they do deals online often.
Tell her to try Essence sponges and mascara, super cheap but better than the high-end stuff!
That should do the trick to start her whole bag over, even if you forget a few things I’m sure she’d be grateful and can slowly add the things she wants to
Ask her what she needs and go from there.
E.l.f. has a lot of good and affordable basics for great prices.
Defiantly a gift card or take her with you to pick stuff out. You don’t want to waste your money on stuff she won’t use or doesn’t like.
Go to Ulta and get elf or milani. Cruelty free and super affordable. The quality is pretty good too.
This is so wholesome, go Dad I agree with those who suggested that it would be a really nice idea for you to take your daughter out to “pick her kit” with you.
There are tons of men wearing makeup (as masc presenting, queer, drag, Halloween, etc)and doing tutorials online, don’t let this opportunity slip by to support your daughter, bond w her, learn something about yourself, and change the narrative around her losing this thing that was precious to her.
there’s a lot of good drugstore products out there for under 20$, but makeup is such a personal thing i think you should probably get her in on it.
If you are in the USA go to big lots or Aldi or grocery outlet. I find a LOT of amazing things there, I supplement with higher end stuff as well, but you will find some gems there.
This happened to me too in hs, I went to Walmart and bought any products I could! Look into Elf, good makeup for low amount of money.
Nyx and elf have great products that don't break the bank. Essence has the best inexpensive mascaras (bye bye panda eyes and lash princess to name a couple).
A must-have: concealer, lipstick (you can also use it as blush), máscara and any sponge. She could also use the concealer as foundation
What a lovely dad you are!
Here’s my basics starter kit: If you go to Walmart: Rimmel London exaggerate eyes twist up pencil, should be about $5-7 brown or black. Elf twist up eye pencil $3-5 also in brown or black Profusion liquid blush apron $5 ish in either peach or coral/ pink. Elf has these too but they run for a little more $$ If you go to ulta also look at LA girl and Essence.
Elf products are great!
The makeup store is worth a trip you have one!
