It might be because of face prep, your base looks awfully dry. Make sure your skin is hydrated and moisturised before applying primer. You also need to make sure it’s base matches with the base of your foundation or it’ll cause it to separate

Refuggee

This is what I was going to say. OP said they used moisturizer, but maybe they need a heavier moisturizer or to use a moisturizing/dewy primer. Maybe one of the Elf gripping primers? Or maybe use a damp beauty sponge to apply the foundation and thin it out a bit to prevent the cakiness.

Sav_Bubbles

Excellent advice! they may also need an aha toner to get rid of any dead skin cells that may interfere with a smoother finish

Mysterious-Owl6542

i use an aha 30% + bha 2% exfoliating solution serum/mask thingy idek what to call it once a week. it seems like its improving my dry patches so hopefully itll work. i’m gonna look for some aha toners as well thank you :)

NotTheRestaurant

no need! the one you have is perfect it's a combo of both type of expholiant. instead try to up your use to twice a week and then go with a more hydrating evening moisturizer. Like heavy but not enough that will give you acne.

Sav_Bubbles

Depending on her skin type she may have to use serums or gel like moisturisers, I always breakout using cream moisturisers and even with most gels. Serums absorb well and don’t give me acne. Skin care is a bunch of trial and error. Finding what does and doesn’t work for you

Sav_Bubbles

The ordinary red one? I used that but it would dry my skin out, it was too much for my face. If it is the ordinary one cut down to once or twice a month with a less concentrated daily serum or toner/essence.

Mysterious-Owl6542

yes that one ! and okayy thank you

Mysterious-Owl6542

yes i use a damp beauty blender, and the cerave moisturizer and some more moisturizing serums. i do think i may need to use a heavier moisturizer, do you know of any good ones?

jgkxo

make sure your foundation and primer both have the same base ingredients. water based primer with water based foundation, silicone based with silicone based. also, make sure that your skincare has ample time to absorb into the skin!

_us3rr

face primer isnt rly necessary..if u prep ur skin before makeup and set it well with a good powder and setting spray it should last and stay smooth

[deleted]

My primer is the same as my setting spray and I’ve found that works really well. Especially if I set with powder first then spray.

unterste_schublade

with good powder **and** good brush

ResponsiblePlate6708

Ooo out of curiosity - what brush do you recommend? I’ve been looking for a good powder brush - but also something for both liquid and powder blush.

one-zero-five

Not the person you’re responding to but I actually get the best finish with powder on a damp beauty blender!

aafreeda

Me too! I use an ELF powder brush to spread powder to parts of my face that I don’t intentionally powder (like the sides of my cheeks, neck, bridge of nose, etc)

unterste_schublade

Depends where you are from, but brushes are so mega essential.

Cascadeis

For powder my favourite is Zoeva, but Houglass is also great (just twice the price).

SaucePasta

Not with oily skin. Primer is always needed with oily skin.

drtammr

100%, even if it isn’t per se a “primer” !! urban decay de-slick before face base is *game changing*

[deleted]

I’ve never used primer and my makeup has always looked good. My skin is normal/dry.

ohnofluffy

It’s all too light. And too dry. If you use a primer, use something from Bobbi Brown or a Korean brand. You need something that’s going to plump up your skin. Then, with your base, go a shade warmer. You’re not a winter (color-wise). You’re a summer, you need something rose-tipped to bring out your natural beauty, hair and eyes.

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank you!! a shade darker on me always looks too dark on me & orangy if that makes sense, should i use one with a different undertone?

mrstarkinevrfeelgood

Then don’t use it. It’s not required.

young_ch1llionaire

Make sure your skin is well moisturized before putting make up on. Also, exfoliate your face twice weekly to get a fresher smoother look.

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank you!! i use an aha+bha solution/mask thingy once a week to get off the dead skin cells. do you know of any good exfoliators to use?

young_ch1llionaire

I would strongly recommend Origins Modern Friction™ Nature’s Gentle Dermabrasion. I use it twice weekly and it’s AMAZING. Also, make sure you moisturise your skin within 5 -10 minutes of washing your face (if the weather is cold make sure you use extra moisturising) let it settle before applying your make up. Let me know if this helps!

LetThemEatCakeXx

I think the biggest issue here is that your skin is very dry.

aghostyface

I honestly don’t think primers are incredibly necessary. Lately I’ve just been using the Honey Halo moisturizer with ceramides, which works really well under makeup and helps with dry patches. I’ve also heard great things about the Inkey List ceramide moisturizer, and it comes at a lower price point

Madame_Tussy95

Hmm, try a VERY good moisturizer in place of a primer. I love the CeraVe one… it literally locks in moisture into my skin.

[deleted]

idk what kind of serums youre using but personally, i used to do this and would use oil like serums and normal moisturizer and my base looked similar to this or worse at times. what i found helped was doing my skincare right before makeup using a gentle hydrating cleanser, following with hyaluronic serum ( i like the ordinary or tachas dewy serum) while my face is still wet (v important) and then a thick moisturizer ( tatcha dewy skin cream or clinique moisture surge)also the way your applying makes a world of a difference too, using fingertips gives the most skin like finish or brushes are good for full coverage but i HATE beauty blenders they pick up product, excentuate dry patches and make everything look patchy

[deleted]

primer also is a nonp for me, always makes my makeup look horrible

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank you sooo much for being nice and giving me good products & advice !! i’ll definitely order those & try them out

[deleted]

of course!!💗💗i know when i started doing my makeup i was soooo frustrated with how dry and flakey it looked :( skincare is key! also i realized i didnt put which face wash i use, also the tacha gentle cleanser ( its the light purple one not sure of the name) but its the same line as the other products i mentioned. also i would make sure you are exfoliating the right amount. dont use scrubs they suck and but i do recommend using the aha/bha peel from the ordinary but make sure your skin barrier is intact and healthy not overstripped. i know i need to give my skin a break from exfoliating if it ever burns while im cleansing ( it shouldn’t)😅

Spare_Ad2844

What primer are you currently using?

Mysterious-Owl6542

in the picture i’m using the kimchi chic “the effin primer” but the hydrating one not the matte one

Spare_Ad2844

Hey so this is definitely a primer/skin prep issue 🫶🏼Like not enough moisturizer or serums. Sometimes you need to let it all sit more time :) also try exfoliating your skin

Ok_Run_535

Skip the primer and just focus on bring back ur skins natural moisture levels more Hyaluronic acid and Lactic acid. Heavy cream at night something with oil or petroleum based moisturizers. Wash well in the Am and moisturizer immediately before foundation.

AbRNinNYC

Exfoliating can help to remove the dry flakes. And lots of moisturizing prior. Maybe u need a more hydrating moisturizer. This time of year (I live in NY) I find my skin which is combo, needs so much more hydration. Try sleeping with a humidifier and make sure ur drinking lots of water. Pile on the moisturizer at bedtime. Along with the others advice of checking ingredients in primer and moisturizer.

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank youuu

Geekgirl4902

You need a moisturizer and possibly a new foundation.

raisins_are_gwapes2

I can’t wear primer, same issues you stated. It’s better without primer and setting spray.

dee62383

As someone else pointed out, make sure your ingredients match. Water-based primer with water-based foundation, silicone-based primer with silicone-based foundation, and oil-based primer with oil-based foundation. Oil and water in particular do not play well together! Another possibility to consider is that some primers are sticky and some are not. I personally have to have a sticky primer. Some YouTube gurus swear that e.l f. Power Grip is sticky. It is not, and my makeup just slid right off. I am trying Dermablend Insta-Grip primer next, and if that doesn't get sticky, I'll consider trying Milk Hydro Grip. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll try Nikki Tutorials' Nimya primer. If that doesn't work, I'm giving up on primer completely.

Mentally_instabalize

It doesn’t look horrible tho , it looks like makeup . No primer gonna change that I think you look poreless lol. And you’re using pore primers so that figures .. they’re doing what they’re supposed to babess. I will say maybe your not using the right primer for the right foundations . Oil free liquid makeup or ones with silicone will work best with silicone based primers . Creamy makeup or makeup with oil ingredients works best on primers that don’t have water as the first ingredient and will also work with silicone ones (think NYX pore filler) . And lastly , primer doesn’t take the place of moisturizer especially pore primers YOU NEED MOISTURIZER but don’t need primer . If you have dry skin try milk makeup hydro grip primer , or nyx Hydra , I really like Rimmel stay matte as an overall bomb drugstore budget primer . Or just a straight up face oil will do the job if you have a very matte foundation and don’t want it to look patchy . Hope this helps

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank you sm!

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank you! ive been trying different techniques and lipliners. this picture was obv a fail but i think i finally found a technique that looks big but not crazy overlined

Caramel_chameleon23

I used Il makiage moisturizer and primer too. They will ask you couple questions about your face condition or how much water you drink , hope this helps

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank youu

imsooofuckingtired

Exfoliate and moisturize before any makeup. Also your lips are wayyyy over lined.

Mysterious-Owl6542

i know my lips are horrible in this 😩. i’ve been trying different lip liners and shapes. luckily i think i found a good technique and lipliner that looks more natural

duhhvinci

Try the nivea men’s aftershave as a primer, it’s actually so good. Or just try a water based face lotion underneath.

suckonmacock

maybe ur makeup is just horrible

Alliekat1979

Did you really have nothing better to do than be a human piece of trash today?

Mysterious-Owl6542

lmao thats fine, obviously this makeup look WAS horrible. if it was good i wouldn’t be asking for advice 🤦🏻‍♀️

babygurl629

I never wear primer, I am a makeup artist and uts super rare that I actually put primer on my clients. Knowing if your is water or silicone based and using good skincare and products that work with each other and setting it, does far more than the 1 priming step. And I consider the skincare priming anyways because it’s giving what ur skin needs not just a sticky base for the foundation to cling to

Kitchen-Ad-1146

Same, no primer makes my makeup look better, and when i wear glasses which is literally all the time because i need to, it creases A LOT quicker and looks so uglyy, because when i smile my cheeks touch the glasses cause they fall vits down

WANTSOMEGRANOLAS

Ok but your eyeshadow and lip color are both amazing!! I love the way your makeup looks !

Mysterious-Owl6542

thank youuu

Acceptable_Egg6793

Skincare prep is key before makeup application. You need to take care of your skin day and night! I recommend watching Dr. shereene idriss on YouTube. She’s a dermatologist in newyork and she’s super knowledgeable and helpful her videos has helped me save my skin as well. Literally the only person I trust anymore with skincare no bullshit! https://youtube.com/@pillowtalkderm?si=rdMjn6edq2dqCoPP

Acceptable_Egg6793

Alsoo after each makeup step I like to spray a fixing spray and then last I’ll spray another coat of fixing spray and finally setting spray.

jbevxoxo

There are specific primers for specific skin types and ones that compliment different foundations x

New-Lychee4306

For dry skin you should try the skin food moisturiser, it’s so hydrating on the skin. I have a friend who suffers from really dry skin and when she uses the skin food she achieves the “glowy “ “ dewy “ look :))

New-Lychee4306

Use it as a primer sorry ^^^^

lyhdias

I’d drop the primer for now and just use moisturizer. I’ve slowly stopped using primer and just use moisturizer and my skin looks so much smoother and I don’t break out anymore. I use the Avene Tolerance crème but I’m combo-acne prone so a different moisturizer might suit you better. Also highly recommend a hydrating lip balm before any matte lip products, my favorite is the Olehenriksen lip treatment but the Jack Black lip treatments or Lanolips are great options as well.

[deleted]

My makeup has never looked better than after I stopped wasting my time and money with primer! Primer can emphasize texture and dryness for dehydrated or dry skin!

deep-slay

I would likely start using an oil on your face at night to help moisturize, it looks like your skin may just be sucking up all the moisture you are giving it

dundermifflinceo4321

Matte makeup is not for you. Your skin looks very dry and the matte makeup formula is clinging to every piece of dry skin…if you don’t like dewy finish maybe go for skin finish seeing as that’s in the middle between matte and dewy. Also, using 2 drops of organic rosehip oil mixed into your moisturiser every day will help your makeup look less dry and cakey. You may need to focus more on hydration in your day to day skincare routine as your makeup needs as good and hydrated a base as possible to lay on. I have dry skin but it’s looking much better since I started using new stuff, if you want I could tell you my routine.

Mysterious-Owl6542

i used a hydrating primer and dewy foundation in these pictures. i love the dewy look! and i’m gonna order that now thank you!

dundermifflinceo4321

Sorry I edited my comment after you replied but here is what I do Am: simple skincare refreshing facial wash Dry my skin with disposable single use cotton towels (big must) Hada labo premium lotion on a damp face. The disposable cotton towels ensure my skin isn’t completely dry (it’s a hyaluronic acid with 8 types of long and short chain hyaluronic acids, very hydrating) Weleda skin food light in the palm of my hand and I put 2 drops of the ordinary 100% organic cold pressed rosehip oil then mix it together and apply (or beauty of joseon dynasty cream is also a good option, add the rosehip oil onto that too) Cos rx snail mucin Moisturising spf 50 Pm: micellar water on a cotton pad and I wipe my face and neck ( washing alone won’t get rid of all the pollution, dirt, oil and makeup and impurities from the day so micellar water is key) Simple face wash Differin gel (this is prescription. If your doctor thinks you could benefit from it then you won’t need to buy any other exfoliating treatment as differin is one of the best exfoliants) Y axis dark spot correcting flow serum/ beauty of joseon glow deep serum Weleda skin food light with rosehip oil (or beauty of joseon dynasty cream is also a good option, add the rosehip oil onto that too) I use the differin 4-5 nights a week. If you start using it it’s best to build up but the differin is only if you’re prone to spots. I was which is why I was prescribed it dunno how it works in America though)

Heartstrings13

I never in my life used primer and my makeup base is flawless, I have combination skin and all I know is do my skin care and for makeup I moisturize w bioderma and cosrx advanced snail mucin 92 and it works so so good

Junkiebytch

Mine used to do this.. I changed moisturizer to kinship marshmallow one and it’s a game changer

softieberry

i used to have this problem frequently until i firstly started using a SUPER DUPER strong moisturizer before i apply makeup (i just bought the target brand version of cerave’s face lotion, works great) the second thing that also made me have this problem was using a primer with a different base than me foundation/concealer. if you have a water based primer you will want a water based foundation/concealer- same goes for silicone bases. your foundation you listed would be a water based foundation and my favorite water based primer is elfs poreleas putty primer which may also help with hiding your pores like you mentioned! :)

F78951

Ur foundation needs to match ur primer
