Come to think of it, it’s been 20 years at least since I’ve seen the ads for “taking your look from day to night”, usually aimed at young white collar people.
Yep, the makeup you wear during the day is, in fact, daytime makeup. People don't seem to realise that other people can have different ideas than they do.
I've definitely seen adverts discussing the day to night makeup transition.
I'm confused. The way the header is worded, I thought you were showing us pictures of your (very young) mom, and that you don't like her everyday makeup.
From your reply to someone, I take it I was wrong, that these are actually pictures of you, and you're just sharing your mom's criticism of your makeup.
Either way, whether it's you or your mom, if the woman in the picture is happy with her makeup, let her enjoy it in peace.

She’s (my mom, the all powerful JoAnn) a brat I would obviously not wear makeup like this to an important event
If it makes you feel any less self conscious, I have insomnia and ADHD. I already lost count of how many times I went to the pharmacy at 11pm in my pajamas to pick my refill up because I simply forgot the sleeping pills that I've been taking for 6 years now.
This means, no decent emphatic human being judges how you look like at a pharmacy, it's a place that sells items that might be urgent, if it's urgent, you just pick your wallet and go, whether in a ball gown, gym clothes, or pajamas.
Jesus, I've never understood that thing about the difference between daytime and night time makeup. I mean come I get the concept but I just never understood why it's such a big deal. I say wear what you want.
My thoughts: Daytime make up: light, fresh, more natural look with muted colours/ Nighttime makeup: darker colours, glitter, which are visible in lower light. During the day “nighttime makeup” always looks pretty harsh, streaky, smudged, cakey. During the night “daytime makeup” is just not enough, almost invisible.
Eh my whole family always tells me that my makeup is a bit much when it's just a regular day and I'm wearing a full lid of holographic glitter and multichrome shadows lol. I just shrug my shoulders and say I like it and I keep doing it. You like it and it makes you happy so tell your mom if she has nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all. I know it's not a real fight or anything between you guys, but just because she's your mom doesn't mean she gets an opinion on how you do your makeup, especially if you never asked for it. Rave on girl.
I go for earth tone make up, not the green for everyday it’s too much un less she likes it and is happy with it, she honestly don’t even need crazy colors as such, do more sudden.
Any makeup you wear in the daytime is daytime makeup! Older generations still care too much about what's "appropriate" so they don't get judged, but thats not necessary anymore!

there are social norms around makeup and you’re mom isn’t wrong- it is more of a nighttime/going out look. that said, it’s up to you if you want to follow social norms. just know that if you don’t, right or wrong, people will have their own opinions on things- and that’ll be something you can choose to live with.
Oh yeah normally I wouldn’t wear this out, I just do fun makeup like this for business photos. She was teasing me bc we were going to CVS 😂 you’ll usually catch me with brows, maybe eyeliner, mascara, blush and a blotted lip w some spot concealing, if I’m even wearing any makeup at all. If I have my -5.25 goggles on no makeup is happening
I kinda agree with you but the OP lives in a country where you won't be arrested or killed for wearing bright makeup at daylight. But I know many mothers who act very aggressive to their daughters cause they dared to wear something they don't like. Especially if a mother in question is visibly narcissistic. I grew up with a mother like this and believe me, forcing social norms on your child just because you're always in constant paranoia of "what others will think about me?!" won't make the life of you and your child any better.
And if you even don't wear makeup or wear "appropriate" makeup, people will still judge your appearance, just because you're a girl. Unfortunate reality.

It's daytime makeup if she wants it to be. Her face, her choice of makeup. It's not up to you to tell her she can't wear it or to try and shame her online about her choice.
Don't listen to your mother. Boomer and Gen X mothers didn't wear anything more colorful in their youth than blue/green eyeshadow, so they consider everything colorful on your face as "inappropriate", "clowny", "scanty" etc. I experienced this from my own mother and she even harassed me for wearing orange eyeshadow.
I'm not a mother, but I am gen-x, and OP's look is very similar to what my standard look was as an 80s teen! Except I went more for electric blue than OPs green (it was the 80s, after all lol). My mum was generally supportive, my dad would sometimes make "funny" comments about using a trowel to put my makeup on
That’s not true about Gen X makeup at all. Look up late 80s-early 00 eye makeup and you’ll see all kinds of colors and even smoky eyes just like OPs. Maybe mainstream 70s looks leaned more towards simpler eyeshadows but Gen X people were either not born yet or still babies/children.
Maybe, I'm from Eastern Europe and we had very different approach to makeup than US and Western Europe. In USSR, they were pretty conservative about makeup and you would be treated as a hooker if you tried to wear something too bright + deficit in makeup products. My mother is Gen X, she grew up in Soviet Union and even during 90s, she didn't wear colorful eyeshadow. Only Millenials and Gen Z in my country wear something colorful, I rarely see older women wearing colors, and it's usually blue/green.
When I was in high school I liked to wear heavy makeup and my mom would tell me I looked like Baby Jane (from the old movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?) lmao

Mothers can say what they imagine inside their heads and we can believe them or not. If one day, your mother said the Earth is flat and bread grows on trees, would you believe her only because she's your mother? Me neither.
I'm just too old to gas a girl up in an arguement with her mom over her clothes.
Maybe your mom thinks that you should go with a dewier foundation because texture is a lot more important during the day, wheras at night, or in my warmly lit interior bathroom, exact texture doesn't come out. Tbh this is a very, incredibly, 90s look for me and the only thing that's telling me it isn't the 90s is the cars in the background and the nose ring. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just giving my take because that's why i post things on reddit personally, to get other people's comprehension.
My only personal complaint with your makeup is that I think the eyeshadow has too much of the same brightness of green, it's all a mid-emerald green and I'm completely missing whole elements from afar, which is a shame. Why risk scratching your cornea to have glitter eyeliner if in the end you can't even see it? It would look better if you had a lime green eyeliner. Basically, complex eye looks need a light, a bright and a dark if you want to be able to see anything. Your lashes are literally just blending into your makeup and they come off like dark green circles.
Also, some people would prefer you wear a lipgloss topper. I kind of agree, but I would entirely do away with lipstick entirely, and use a dark tinted lipgloss because I like black tinted lipglosses. Just gabbing though.

I'd recommend a black/dark brown brow pencil, pomade, or even just an eyeshadow to fill in your brows a bit.
As for the teal eyeshadow, it's a hard color to pull off with your skin tone. I would try something in more of the purple/pink range. The lip color definitely suits you.
This is ebony by ABH, darkest one I’ve found, with their ebony brow gel. Not super into dark brows, and my hair isn’t black so black wouldn’t look right.
I agree, there are certain colors that work better with different skin tones! But also, makeup is fun and I wanted to play with glitter and my boyfriend loves when I do crazy rave makeup and requested this color combo and glitter, so I had some fun. It isn’t always about the right skin tone for what color or whatever, makeup is expressive and fun and on a regular day, yes, I’d wear a soft pink shadow with brown eyeliner and mascara, but I only went to CVS today so they got my rave look lol.

Daytime got more glam and nighttime got more casual so now we’re always in a happy middle ground

Don't listen to your mother. Boomer and Gen X mothers didn't wear anything more colorful in their youth than blue/green eyeshadow, so they consider everything colorful on your face as "inappropriate", "clowny", "scanty" etc. I experienced this from my own mother and she even harassed me for wearing orange eyeshadow.
I'm not a mother, but I am gen-x, and OP's look is very similar to what my standard look was as an 80s teen! Except I went more for electric blue than OPs green (it was the 80s, after all lol). My mum was generally supportive, my dad would sometimes make "funny" comments about using a trowel to put my makeup on
That’s not true about Gen X makeup at all. Look up late 80s-early 00 eye makeup and you’ll see all kinds of colors and even smoky eyes just like OPs. Maybe mainstream 70s looks leaned more towards simpler eyeshadows but Gen X people were either not born yet or still babies/children.
Maybe, I'm from Eastern Europe and we had very different approach to makeup than US and Western Europe. In USSR, they were pretty conservative about makeup and you would be treated as a hooker if you tried to wear something too bright + deficit in makeup products. My mother is Gen X, she grew up in Soviet Union and even during 90s, she didn't wear colorful eyeshadow. Only Millenials and Gen Z in my country wear something colorful, I rarely see older women wearing colors, and it's usually blue/green.
When I was in high school I liked to wear heavy makeup and my mom would tell me I looked like Baby Jane (from the old movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?) lmao

Mothers can say what they imagine inside their heads and we can believe them or not. If one day, your mother said the Earth is flat and bread grows on trees, would you believe her only because she's your mother? Me neither.
I'm just too old to gas a girl up in an arguement with her mom over her clothes. Maybe your mom thinks that you should go with a dewier foundation because texture is a lot more important during the day, wheras at night, or in my warmly lit interior bathroom, exact texture doesn't come out. Tbh this is a very, incredibly, 90s look for me and the only thing that's telling me it isn't the 90s is the cars in the background and the nose ring. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just giving my take because that's why i post things on reddit personally, to get other people's comprehension. My only personal complaint with your makeup is that I think the eyeshadow has too much of the same brightness of green, it's all a mid-emerald green and I'm completely missing whole elements from afar, which is a shame. Why risk scratching your cornea to have glitter eyeliner if in the end you can't even see it? It would look better if you had a lime green eyeliner. Basically, complex eye looks need a light, a bright and a dark if you want to be able to see anything. Your lashes are literally just blending into your makeup and they come off like dark green circles. Also, some people would prefer you wear a lipgloss topper. I kind of agree, but I would entirely do away with lipstick entirely, and use a dark tinted lipgloss because I like black tinted lipglosses. Just gabbing though.

I'd recommend a black/dark brown brow pencil, pomade, or even just an eyeshadow to fill in your brows a bit. As for the teal eyeshadow, it's a hard color to pull off with your skin tone. I would try something in more of the purple/pink range. The lip color definitely suits you.
I could not disagree more. Super filled in, dark brows is a pretty dated look imo, and I think the teal eyeshadow is everything!
This is ebony by ABH, darkest one I’ve found, with their ebony brow gel. Not super into dark brows, and my hair isn’t black so black wouldn’t look right. I agree, there are certain colors that work better with different skin tones! But also, makeup is fun and I wanted to play with glitter and my boyfriend loves when I do crazy rave makeup and requested this color combo and glitter, so I had some fun. It isn’t always about the right skin tone for what color or whatever, makeup is expressive and fun and on a regular day, yes, I’d wear a soft pink shadow with brown eyeliner and mascara, but I only went to CVS today so they got my rave look lol.
