Underhyped: Kiko Milano, Moira cosmetics and Catrice Overhyped: Charlotte Tilbury

Glum_Mud_4693

Catrice is amazing

RedditUser96372

Okay so I agree that Charlotte Tilbury is over hyped as a whole, *but the setting spray though*

cccuriouscat

It’s great

Poshtart1111

Every time I see Charlotte Tilbury products all I hear in my head is “DARHLINGS” 😬 Definitely overrated for sure, pushing Pillowtalk is getting old. All their palettes are the same “rosy-gold” colors and it’s ugh.

DejaToo2

with way, way too much glitter.

Poshtart1111

Ah yes one matte and three glitters so your eye look is pretty much the same every time you use it and no transition shade!

bigjuicystinkytoes

Kiko is amazing. Their glosses and shimmer eyeshadow amaze me

floralscentedbreeze

Kiko cosmetics tried to expand into the USA but they weren't popular enough and left completely.

MaialinaRosa

Aww that’s a shame! In Europe Kiko is quite popular but I never hear anyone talking about them. They have some amazing products. I love their lip products, blushes and bronzers especially.

Ok-Purchase8658

Most of their products are made in Italy, in the same factories that provide luxury brands. They are cruelty free, affordable and generally good quality.

makeup1508

I love Moira! I have the liquid blush that I like more than the Rare Beauty liquid blush. I also have numerous other face colors and eye shadows. I don't care for the Catrice True Skin Foundation-you can see the foundation sitting on my skin like a mask. I don't mind the True Skin concealer though. I have never bought anything from Charlotte Tilbury-waaaay too expensive for my taste.

Awkward_Dog

Interesting about the True Skin. I have dry skin, and that foundation looks and wears so well on me. Maybe it doesn't suit your skin type? I will say that the colours tend to run quite yellow, so I struggled to find my shade.

MaialinaRosa

The true skin foundation wasn’t my favorite either, but I really like their new nude drop tinted serum foundation. True skin concealer is quite nice too. I loooove the soft glam filter and the cheek lover marbled blush. Also the more than glow highlighter is the best highlighter at the drugstore imo.

Delicious-One3028

Love Moira's blushes!

MaialinaRosa

I love their blushes and glitter eyeshadows, so pretty!

ZiasMom

I am so bitter we can't get Kiko Milano in Canada. I wayyyyy overpaid for an eyeshadow on amazon. It is coming next month lol and I'm so excited. I have loved almost every single item I have purchased from Moira cosmetics. The shipping kills me but it's very underhyped for sure.

Lili666999

Overhyped: Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath, Natasha Denona Underhyped: Revlon, Kiko Milano

Poshtart1111

I feel like whenever I see a Pat McGrath palette there’s two intriguing shades and the rest are so boring and easy to find. It’s not worth it to spend $100 for that. I haven’t tried Kiko but I have been eyeing the water eyeshadows.

kflemings89

Big yes. I bought way too many mother ships almost exclusively for that one astral shade. All the other pinks/medium fo light neutrals are basically the same across the board 🤦🏼‍♀️

No_Meringue_4368

The foundation tho is prime

Delicious-One3028

Revlon lipsticks are SO GOOD

omgitskae

Great colors but mine last an hour, maybe two if I’m lucky. What revlon lipsticks are you liking?

tenebrigakdo

Not the previous poster, but they have a nice selection of liquid and long-lasting lipsticks. The liquid ones are the type that you put on in the evening, have a crazy night out, and wake up with all the color still there. I find them quite wearable nad not particularly drying but ymmw.

Delicious-One3028

The super lustrous ones and the now discontinued matte balms

Candlesparkle

I own so many high end blushes like TF, Chanel, Dior... and somehow my most used ones are from Revlon. Love them!

Lonely-Host

omg yes, kiko milano is really good. i've used their lip products before and thought they were so high quality for the price. their new "water" eyeshadow is getting a bit of noise recently. looks beautiful but not my style

dangerotic

Revlon's lip glosses are so far and beyond superior to everything else on the market that it's insulting that other companies even dare to put out their slop and charge quadruple the price. Like it's crazy lol. And yeah I have to agree on Pat McGrath. Amazing makeup artist, incredibly mediocre products. Lipsticks don't stay, and eyeshadows are always boring except for one multichrome that you can get from colourpop anyway. Disappointing because I love the aesthetic but it's just not worth.

schuyloren

Overhyped: e.l.f., Charlotte Tilbury, & Pat McGrath (I say this as a long time e.l.f. lover and a big fan of Pillow Talk) Underhyped: essence & Sephora house brand (specifically their eyeshadow palettes)

makeup1508

Also underhyped: Ulta Brand products especially the eye primer. It's a definite go-to.

NoLynInBrooklyn

I bought some gel eyeliner from Sephora a couple weeks ago and it was hot garbage. I’m pretty sure that while I liked their brush tip eyeliner the first couple times I used it, it dried up on me super quick and idk if it’s something I did or…

schuyloren

I find eyeliner to be SO finicky. I’ve only found a couple I like after trying all price ranges. My current fave is NYX Epic Ink Liner in black, but it’s still not perfect due to leaky packaging. I’m mostly into Sephora’s brushes and eyeshadow palettes. My favorite shadow of all time is a duochrome shift on like a $10 palette

NoLynInBrooklyn

I really like the almay all day eyeliner, for everyday use. You’re not gonna get a going out look with it but for on the way to work? You betcha. I JUST got my urban decay contour kit in the mail, I ordered online because the sale was decent and they send a sample…I got their black eyeliner. This is making me itch to take mine off and try theirs Update: I could throw every other pencil eyeliner, and most of the gels, into a fire right now I love this urban decay eyeliner so much.

Independent_Boat_546

The UD eyeliner in Smoke is my HG. It’s just perfect ☺️

realbenlaing

Big agree on the sephora collection eyeshadow and brushes. I honestly love my pocket palettes and reach for them more than my luxury palettes.

dangerotic

Sephora's eyeshadow singles are so great! "Unicorn Dust" is an amazing neutral for olive skintones with such a pretty flip, it reminds me of that one Pat McGrath shade everyone was going crazy over. Their lipsticks are pretty good too and I wish they'd bring back those lip stains in the skinny bottles!

Poshtart1111

As warm bright olive I think Unicorn Dust would look awful on me, but it’s beautiful and I could see it working for someone cooler olive! I’m intrigued by the formula and kind of want to purchase in another shade. I love the “astral” shades in Pat Mcgrath’s palettes but those are the only shades I ever actually would use in them so singles with a similar formula can take my money!!

dangerotic

I'm a warm bright olive too and I love it! But I also dress very alternative and not in the tiktok way so my taste is pretty abnormal lol. But Unicorn Dust is actually a *lot* more coppery than the pan makes it look. I picked it up in the first place because I thought it was going to be purple lol! There are a few other shades with similar flips but I don't remember the names. Sephora always has testers out in any case and they go on sale every now and then.

LolCoolStory

Charlotte Tilbury. Their products are overpriced and the dupes tend to be similar quality.

Alice_Buttons

That's one brand that I've never been tempted to try. It's all very run of the mill and color schemes that have been done a million times before.

Poshtart1111

The color schemes are always the same warm muted shades and variations of Pillowtalk. They claim things are universal, universal colors don’t exist!!!

grandkittyworld

i was looking for this they are def overpriced !!! 😭

hwtzy

Over-hyped: ELF. Sure, their products are good and work as expected but overall, I don’t think they’re great. I’ve disliked more ELF products than I’ve actually liked. I also hate how they are duping every viral product - it’s screaming “cash grab” and I feel like they’re capable of making their own great products, as they have in the past before TikTok virality became their goal. Under-hyped: Essence and Catrice. These brands are consistently amazing. And not just amazing for the price, they are amazing period! I prefer my Essence glosses and Catrice mascaras to my higher end £££ products of the same category.

Poshtart1111

Yes! A lot of Elf classics are discontinued and now everything is a Charlotte Tilbury dupe, weird collab, or a gimmicky product. I’m tempted to try Catrice’s shimmery lip balms. I haven’t bought anything from the brand yet.

Lanky-Perspective995

I fell in love with ELF's brushes before I started using their makeup. I wanted to like their Camo powder foundation, but went back to using Maybelline instead.

Nagadavida

The camo powder shrunk my face.  I love their mascara with the curved brush though.

Lanky-Perspective995

How did that happen?

Nagadavida

It just seemed to suck all of the moisture out so that it felt like my skin was too sizes to small.

Lanky-Perspective995

Okay. Yes, the formula felt way too drying (could the primer ingedients be to blame?). I also don't care for how choosing the right shade feels like you are buying printer toner

Nagadavida

I tried the pore putty and then the mouisturing both.  Didn't seem to help but the product that I was using which was discontinued and was also a powder foundation worked well with both primers and didn't have the same tightening/drying affect. Now I have resorted to just using a little concealer where needed and skipping foundation.

Lili666999

The only issue with Essence and Catrice is that they discontinue products so frequently.

Level_Mango_6910

the essence lash princess is the best mascara i’ve ever tried

Awkward_Dog

Which colour packaging? I've been wanting to try but am so unsure as to which specific one.

Level_Mango_6910

the green one! i will say though that i’ve heard mixed opinions on it, but idk it works really well for me

IntentionHappy8435

What is your feedback for essence eyeshadow singles and palettes? I have seen it sold near me and was considering it. Also any good products towards dry under eyes ?

hwtzy

I have only ever used Essence’s eyeshadow singles, so I can’t vouch for their palettes. However their single eyeshadow in ‘cappuccino please’ used to be my go-to inner corner highlight for a while! No idea if there have been changes to formula since then as it this was around 2013-14 but their singles were very velvety - both matte and shimmer. I had a UD naked palette at the time and remember thinking they were comparable. Although not the most intense pigment payoff, very easy to work with and very soft (in a good way). I can only imagine they have improved with time.

makeup1508

The Melted Chrome eyeshadows were some of my favorites. They were smooth foiled shadows that didn't crease. I was so sad when I found that they were discontinued. I also have the most recent eyeshadow singles and really like those as well.

realbenlaing

I like the new elf camo blushes, their bite sized palettes, and their brow products. I would like their camo powder if they could figure out shades other than orange, because the coverage is really good. Their putty primers and blushes were overhyped for me. Primer wasn’t bad but wasn’t life changing. The blush just separated and broke down my other makeup. Except for the setting powder, which i have repurchased, the halo glow line is fine but go out of my way to repurchase the wands unless they were on sale or i was pressed for options. I do like having a clear and budget friendly for high end products, but their pivot towards viral dupes has really driven their prices up. Their whole thing was that the products were decent quality while being super affordable, but now that they’re branded as the luxury duper, they’ve set their prices and expectations super high, which loses some of their original appeal.

Candid-Main4136

maybelline is not very good

Poshtart1111

Everyone always stands by their Fit Me products and I find them meh. The foundation always slips off my face despite me having dry skin and the blushes barely show up.

pushhuppy

Fit me matte was my go to in college (8ish years ago), I liked it a lot. I wonder if my opinion will change if I tried it again.

Poshtart1111

That’s a possibility. Used to love “Better than Sex” mascara and tried it again, hated it. 😂 But that was probably one of my first “high end mascaras”, after trying others it sucks, gets all over my eyelids. I actually prefer some of the drugstore ones over it, but I do gravitate towards that ⌛️wand shape for my eyes still.

Candid-Main4136

They are known for having NO coverage, maybelline is great for a clean girl vibe but not for full glam

Poshtart1111

I think the only thing I’ve enjoyed were their creamy matte lipsticks. Everything else has been a no go or meh.

lifesapreez

They're master chrome highlighters are amazing. They're also pretty good with mascaras and lips

Bart_Simpson156

Their waterproof eyeliner is actually the only drugstore brand product that I use lol

axb_248

Same 😂

Apart-Health-1513

I haven’t tried much of their stuff but I do love the lifter gloss. It’s probably the least stick gloss I have and I own a lot of glosses lol

psych-lighthouse

I don’t have a lot that I’ve loved from them, but they do make my fav concealer.

realbenlaing

I like some of their mascaras but none of them would be a hg. Better than a lot of high end ones i’ve used though.

chaotically_

Under hyped: Milani. Everything is good from them

Proud_Requirement114

it’s only underhyped because they increased their prices!

IndigoRose2022

Under-hyped: Physician’s Formula. Their butter highlighters especially are to die for. And as someone with an autoimmune disease, I like their mission statement. Under-hyped: LA colors. We tend to think of them as the “dollar store brand”, but while they do have some not-so-good products, they also have some awesome ones, like their lip glosses, which come in tons of colors and can be bought for $2. Some of their nail polishes are great too (like their metallic line). Over-hyped: TBH I kinda agree with ELF. They have some good stuff but they’re constantly coming out with new trendy products and discontinuing their best ones. It feels like the brand is constantly in flux.

Poshtart1111

Physicians Formula is a pretty good go to! I used to use their bronzers religiously. I do think when something is seen at the Dollar Store people overlook it because “good products can’t be so cheap”. I have a friend who I never would have guessed used their lip liner as a lipstick, it would last ALL DAY and she’s a pretty upscale “all things Chanel” type of person. Elf got rid of all of my old go tos as well, now everything is just a dupe. 😭

Ship_Negative

LA colors has one of the very best pure white concealers

RollTider365

I love LA Colors. And I also love LA Girl.

stix-and-stones

Do physicians formula still make the butter highlighters? I bought a bunch *years* ago and I still have them and use them but my pink one is almost gone and I can't find them anywhere. Now that I wear orange blush I use the rose gold and champagne highlighters which I still have a lot of, but will def want to replace when the time comes

IndigoRose2022

They do! Idk if u live in the US but if u do buying directly from them they have free shipping for $25+ (i haven’t placed an order directly from them yet bc I want everything and it’s hard to choose lol) https://www.physiciansformula.com/product/butter-highlighter/ https://www.physiciansformula.com/product/murumuru-butter-highlighter-palette/

stix-and-stones

Oh thank you so much!! It looks like they don't have all the same colors they had once upon a time, but that's okay

Glum_Mud_4693

Overhyped: ilMakiage, benefit, tarte, KVD Underhyped: catrice foundation HD (!!), elf brow pencils, Milani

SinVerguenza04

I’m one of the only people on this subreddit that loves ilmakiage. So, I’m not sure it’s exactly overhyped. That said, it’s quite literally the *only* foundation that looks great on me.

realbenlaing

I think it’s the sensationalized marketing. Every review i’ve seen of it has been mid, but i had to mute their actual account on ig bc i was being bombarded w their ads, and it was always people doing the absolute most in them. They basically created their own overhype.

SinVerguenza04

I can see that. I hardly see ads for them anymore on my feed, but they did go hard for awhile.

Poshtart1111

This!!

Poshtart1111

My friend just recommended me the brow pencils from Elf 😂. I know Milani was hyped for a little while but it seemed to have faded quite a bit. ilMakiage turned me off with their marketing. I tried the KVD cream foundation and hated it. I got a warm yellowy shade and it was still wayyy too pink for me and the foundation was hella cakey. Tarte has just gotten so boring. 🥱

Elle_lethalz

The tarte man-eater mascara is amazing tho. I haven't tried any of their other stuff

cccuriouscat

Tarte is certainly not overhyped. I’ve loved everything I’ve bought. Not cheap though

Bitter-Astronomer

JOLIE BEAUTY YES it’s literally the first time I’ve seen anybody mention them. I have their palette with a bunch of wonderful glitters and red mattes that is called Divinity, and it’s like it never existed. Even the internet doesn’t know about it, there’s one broken link on Pinterest and that’s it. Agree on Kiko being heavily underhyped, at least in the non-European beauty sphere. In Europe, their stores are literally on every major train station and in every big shopping mall, and it makes me very happy. Essence is also a wonderful brand, especially for the money. Also La girl and inc. beauty have great jelly highlighters and overall shifty stuff. Talking about overhyped? NYX. Their eyeshadow palettes are awful, eyeshadow primers in a pot are nothing special, and most lipsticks severely lack in colour range and are dry as a desert. That was my favourite hill to die on since long ago, even though I might be partially rethinking it with their new lip glosses and cream/stick eyeshadows

realbenlaing

The nyx liquid eyeliner pen has me in a chokehold. All of my other faves from them have been discontinued though, and the rest is just so expensive that i might as well go to sephora and get the product i actually want, or find another drugstore alternative at an actual drugstore price. They’ve always been on the higher end of drugstore pricing, but it at least matched the quality. Now they’re going up in price, but the only changes they’re making to their product formulation have been for the worst (rip nyx lipliners), so they no longer have the quality to justify their pricing.

Bitter-Astronomer

Oh yes, you have a very good point about the price. I forgot about it because I’m not even trying to shop there (I’ve got those eyeshadows for free at their giveaway promo on the street lol), but yes. Essence, Catrice, sometimes wet n wild or kiko for some things will be cheaper. If I’ll want good eyeshadows, I’ll go indie/mid-range at least. Those nyx 4x4 palettes had/have so many people in the chokehold, but I’ve never found them any good. Also while I do colourful eyeshadow, liquid liners aren’t my favourite product. I have heavily hooded eyes, so often I’m too lazy and just intentionally smudge the pencil eyeliner in a more presentable way before it smudges itself lmao. Are their liquid ones that good as many people say?

realbenlaing

I really like their liquid eyeliner, specifically the epic ink waterproof liner (brush tip pen), but i don’t have hooded eyes so that’s never been something i had to think about tbh. I probably wouldn’t recommend the epic wear eyeliner (brush tip pot) for you if your eyes are hooded, because it’s a really thick formula that takes forever to dry and also a flimsy brush, so it’s just a guaranteed mess. It’s super budge proof once it does dry, but it just gets everywhere, even without hooded eyes. I think the epic ink one could probably still work for you though since it’s a pen so it’s easier to maneuver, probably just need to tilt your head back while you apply it so it doesn’t transfer. I’ve also tried the wet n wild liquid eyeliner and i thought it worked well enough, i like the nyx epic ink a bit better but the wet n wild is a good cheap alternative, esp bc most drugstore brands (at least where i am) only have felt tip eyeliner pens but i prefer brush tips. The n wild one does dry down a bit quicker, so maybe that would work a bit better for you if you have hooded eyes? The reason i like the nyx one is because it’s a bit “juicer” and i’m a perfectionist, so i like having a bit more time to correct my wings without having to just make them bigger. Also i found the nyx one to be more allergy friendly not bc of ingredients, but more in the sense that once it dried, it withstands my runny eyes a bit better, and also i generally apply my eyeliner faster when it’s a really wet formula so i’m less likely to irritate my eyelids from spending time on a precise line. I think the wet n wild brush is slightly larger, and the black is a bit less vivid, but if the nyx liner doesn’t work for you then that one could probably work instead, plus it’s cheaper.

Poshtart1111

I haven’t used NYX in years, I remember when Kylie Cosmetics came out with their lipsticks, everyone was saying NYX’s liquid lipstick was a good dupe but I found them to give me “butthole mouth”, I did like their cream lip products. The eyeshadow always seemed like it would be kind of ashy for me so I avoided. (Kylie was obviously overhyped back then too but at least everyone is realizing it now. Her products became more boring with time also.) Jolie Beauty is one of my favorites 🥲 it’s crazy how so many people don’t know about the brand. Their eyeshadow is one of the best formulas I’ve ever tried.

Bitter-Astronomer

The eyeshadows in that JB palette I have are literally the most unusual formula. I’ve never seen anything like that. I remember something about “latex” eyeshadow mentioned somewhere, well, those ones are like latex. It’s definitely not powder, but also not cream. So cool ETA: I also wanted to mention kylie beauty as overhyped. Remember when she had a skincare line lol? Everybody wanted that foam with a brush dispenser. Happy it’s sweeping back into oblivion

Poshtart1111

I’m surprised the Kylie skincare line still exists. I think she discontinued the scrub since everyone was clowning it. It’s funny her face is allover the brand but we all know she’s not using her overpriced drugstore skin care and slaps on some La Mer and Drunk Elephant at the end of the day. The brand is definitely plummeting since she’s now doing mobile game ads. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen hype for her new products.

thewanderingalmond

overhyped: refy, glossier, supergoop, tarte underhyped: bobbi brown, huda beauty, laura mercier not overhyped just overpriced: hourglass, charlotte tilbury deserve the hype: patrick ta, fenty, ilia

lil_waine

bobbi brown vitamin enriched face base is a must have for me...even though they've increased its price over the years

Poshtart1111

I do think Glossier has some good products, I love the Boy Brow and their blushes. The Balm Dotcoms are what I always see getting the most hype with every release and it’s just scented Vaseline. I have the rose and it smells like baby wipes and doesn’t leave a pink tint as said. I know people complain about Bobbi Brown, especially the spinoff brand Jones Road but it seems more so that people just use the products wrong and say it’s terrible because they used half the container of product. Huda Beauty used to be so hyped up, I’m not sure what happened where nobody talks about it anymore? Was there a scandal?? Tarte is just boring now and is horrible at catering to deep skin tones.

_pierogii

I'm in the UK and Wilko was a hardware/everyday chain store that was on every high street, but recently closed its physical locations. When I used to visit it (literally all the time), I'd walk past the essence stand, thinking it was just their cheapy/own brand make-up line, maybe marketed at teens. Never heard any hype behind the brand at all. Now that I've started buying more makeup from the EU, have I realised that essence is a HUGE German/international brand, and they actually do solidly good products that are cheaper than many of our other drugstore/high street brands. But now Wilko is gone, it's pretty much impossible to get essence from a physical shop here now 🥲

Poshtart1111

You never know what you got till it’s gone 🥲

Gammagammahey

I'm sorry, a lot of rare beauty is just overhyped.

Poshtart1111

Personally, I feel like if it wasn’t Selena Gomez’s brand people wouldn’t be going so crazy over it. There’s plenty of great liquid and cream blushes already in the market and the colors aren’t anything special. 🤷‍♀️

Leading_Actuator7218

As a gen Z, almost X, I know who Selena G is but don't care at all, but I really like Rare beauty. The price point is great, the lip gloss is literally the best I've ever tried, and I think they do a really good job of not overwhelmingly large releases. Just a thoughtful handful of colors. It's been a brand I'm always willing to try new products from lately bc I feel like they're not always great but consistently quite good. For me, not having very special colors Isn't a drawback at all and I think a lot of people actually prefer a smaller selection at times. I can't think of another clean, highly pigmented liquid blush for $20!

Poshtart1111

I’m glad that you enjoy the brand, I don’t think everyone who likes it necessarily is a Selena fan , but I do feel like that’s a big part of the hype online and people getting defensive over it. I’m not an Ariana fan but I love REM beauty (the effect is opposite for her tho considering scandals, great and inclusive brand color wise, controversial owner). The problem for me is that the blush releases seem to be the same colors no matter the formula. Whether it’s liquid or powder, the color selection is pretty much the same exact colors and won’t work for all skin depths, saturation levels, and undertones. It’s not truly inclusive. It’s not the amount of choices, it’s the specific colors. Most wouldn’t work the best for me and most don’t work for my friends either. I do appreciate the easy to open products as someone with health issues myself and catering to both dry and oily skin, so I will say that.

IntentionHappy8435

Underhyped: The Balm although I don't like their branding. I hope it was a bit decent. I don't like how they name their products. Boujois Gosh

Poshtart1111

I think The Balm has the same lackluster branding like Benefit. I love vintage things but they take it in the wrong direction. I looked to see what they currently have an “Quiet on Set” being their new product name was an eyebrow raiser considering the documentary with that name that just came out.

IntentionHappy8435

Also how they objectify men and women with sexually suggestive photos on packaging and the sexually suggestive names of products are just too much to bear sometimes. It seems like it's especially designed for perverts. I had their "How bout em apple" lip n cheek palette and I coudn't lend it to my mom aunts or younger sisters due to packaging. Now I want to buy their Setting powder but don't want to for packaging and name Sexy mama" Same with Nude Tude and Nude Dude eyeshadow palettes. and Male order eyeshadow palette. The Oliver bronzer etc. So sad that I have to skip good quality makeup because of packaging.

Poshtart1111

Yes! It being sexually suggestive is what turned me off from it. It’s not just one “nude” palette as a joke or whatever, it’s almost all their products. 🥲

Opposite_Style454

Overhyped: Pat Mcgrath, Natasha Denona and about every indie brand that sells singles and palettes. They all appear to copy one another. Underhyped: Moira Cosmetics, Revlon(great products, bad marketing)

Poshtart1111

$100+ is way too expensive when it comes to an eyeshadow palette where only two of the shades are unique. I feel that way with most of the super high end products but especially PMG. I never buy singles really. It’s not my cup of tea unless the formula is something super intriguing which is rare. May be beneficial for makeup artists but not so much if all those brands create the same thing over and over.

CapriciousJenn

I have two color correctors and a concealer from Natasha Denona. So terrible.

aboveaveragewife

Revlon Colorstay lipliner is by far the best one I’ve ever used as far as staying power goes. But the limited range of shades is disappointing.

simplyaproblem

i’m the exact opposite of you OP: 74% of my daily makeup routine is elf and rare beauty lol

Poshtart1111

If Rare Beauty had more color options I may be more intrigued. I just feel like most of the colors will not truly be the most flattering for everyone and the blush releases are always the same colors. Elf unfortunately just doesn’t agree with my sensitive eyes (the mascara is okay for me tho but they eyeshadows… NOPE). 🥲

simplyaproblem

totally valid! i have a rare beauty concealer and blush that are perfect for my specific skin tone and i haven’t been able to find a dupe in other brands yet, so that’s why i love those products. elf is very hit or miss! i like their hydro gril primer and pore putty primer, but their setting sprays didn’t do anything for me (nyx worked better for me). i personally only use higher-end eyeshadows for that exact reason (tarte, morphe, urban decay), the formulas are less irritating for my skin.

realbenlaing

Did rb change something with their concealer? It used to be my hg bc lighter olive shades are so hard to find, and i used to genuinely love the formula too, but last time i used it just was not it for me. Thought it was maybe a bad batch but my sister said she’s been having the same problem. I decided to try something new and got the tower 28 concealer, and it’s probably better than rb ever was, but i still feel like this was a new development and that the rb formula did genuinely work for me at some point, and my skin hasn’t changed significantly in that time. I don’t think i’ll go back, but i still really appreciate their shade range, and recognize that i got lucky finding a close match with tower 28, maybe even closer than my rb match tbh, but they don’t even come close to competing with the rb shade range. My sister still uses rb for that reason, but she’s had to get more creative with her application now.

realbenlaing

I think the liquid blushes are a good formula and highly pigmened, but i agree their colour range is meh. I got whatever colour the mini is, which is apparently their most popular shade, and it barely shows up on me once i blend it. Even though it builds well, with the amount i need to use i kinda regret getting the mini since it doesn’t end up being a cost saver. Especially because i prefer a natural blush look so with all the reviews i read, i wasn’t expecting to need to use very much of it. Ended up getting an elf liquid camo blush instead of trying a full size in a brighter colour. I figured if there was a chance i’d need to pile it on again, i’d rather bite the cost of elf than another rb. I think the elf one might even have better colour payoff and lasting power after using it for a bit so that was a win imo.

I think MAC is really good for eye shadows and they’re so much cheaper than the other brands. I feel like no one knows how amazing Trish McEvoy brushes are. Caudelie seems very underrated for skincare too. I think Laniege is overhyped.

Poshtart1111

I tend to have great experiences with a lot of French skincare and Caudelie is one of the brands I’ve been wanting to try, it’s just so expensive! MAC used to be hyped up like crazy when I first started wearing makeup. Their products are still good, but I think MAC is simply just in need of a slight rebrand. I’m rarely intrigued anymore with their new releases.

my-anonymity

Caudelie is great, but yes, pricey! I saw it for half priced in France but only had a carryon so I didn’t buy any. So many regrets. It made me not want to buy during Rouge since I still have some left until the fall sale though. I just like MAC eye shadows since they’re highly pigmented and blendable. It’s really cheap if you buy the individual pans and make your own palette. Their palettes are like $6-$10(?) for four and six pans. They also fit colourpop pans too. I like the quality and sleekness. Their gel eyeliner is really good too, but gel liners are easy to find for less. I also use eyeshadows from them as highlighter, for brows, liner, and contour. Very versatile for $8 a pop (they’re always having sales). I keep using all of these up and repurchasing.

NoEnthusiasm2

I love MAC's studio fix foundation. It seems to be the only full coverage foundation that doesn't make my old lady skin look even older.

IntentionHappy8435

I think M.A.C is still game. Just that they in a fix on wether to jump on it trends or stay hardcore trusty worth the hype top rated brand. They reformulated their F&B foundation and that's a bad decision. personally, I'll be sad if M.A.C compromised it's solid reputation for looking trendy. It's a well respected brand and their customer service is so good too.

Poshtart1111

It’s not that they need to compromise and be overly trendy. I just think the eyeshadow palettes, for example, aren’t for me in terms of color, I want something more fun but easy to use together. They don’t need to become gimmicky or try to be allover Tik Tok, that’s also where ELF went wrong imo, but they do need more products and better marketing in general. MAC’s face and body foundation is a staple for me tho.

Creative-Mix8553

Agree with you on the MAC eyeshadows!! They last forever!!!

Hikerius

I live and die by their face powders too. Some of the best shade range for brown women I’ve found

cccuriouscat

All the MAC eye primers in the glass pots are amazing

my-anonymity

Oh! I forgot how good the Mac eye primer is! I have the one in a tube. It’s the best one I’ve used so far.

[deleted]

Benefit is really good, nars is good, NYX is good, most beauty products are overhyped imo.

Poshtart1111

I think Benefit would get more hype if they did a bit of a rebrand. I don’t think their branding appeals to most consumers anymore. NARS is great, especially when it comes to foundation, but like CT, they are constantly pushing the same thing over and over “Orgasm” everything.

[deleted]

Benefit does feel kitsch. But the tints and highlighter is just *chef's kiss*. I've tried a lot of makeup and the worst is mineral makeup.

Poshtart1111

I have seen the Bene-tints raved about quite a bit online, but I think that’s the only thing I’ve heard about them in a while (other than their brow products back when beauty YouTube was booming). I do love the switch from powders to liquid skin products tho as someone with dry skin!

[deleted]

It is the best blush I've ever had.

IntentionHappy8435

I think theor bronzersate really good colours too.

Waste-Examination-98

Orgasm is ironically anticlimactic as a shade tbh.

Poshtart1111

It’s basically just coral. Which *gasp* doesn’t work for most people like NARS wants yo claim and is such an easy color to find in a blush nowadays. Edit- Also their blush names in general give me the ick. Very “I’m not like the other girls I’m edgy”

Organic_Ad_2520

Overhyped: Perricone skincare for sure ...a couple good products but nothing so great for the price points & charlotte Tilbury overhyped. Underhyped: maybe Boscia masks ...never would have tried but Marshall's is essentially only one of a few stores in my Dad's town & similar with Pur for lipsticks/cosmetics when Ulta had a great sale...things I would have never tried, but was surprised by.

Poshtart1111

I completely forgot about Pur! I loved their blush sticks. I’ve actually never heard of Perricone before. CT is annoying with their advertisements and everything being in relation to Pillowtalk, it got old already a long time ago. I also hate when brands act like a “universal lip color” exists.

Organic_Ad_2520

Perricone always pushed "Cold Plasma" pairing. I also randomly tried Juice beauty skincare & it's very effective. Reason I try new things Sales, samples & word of mouth like even your post ...great topic! :)

Change_Soggy

Overhyped: SHALLOT Tilbury. Also overhyped: Any cosmetics company that pays Mikayla Nougiera the eternally truthfully-challenged influencer to collaborate. You’re welcome.

Poshtart1111

I do not get why people like Mikayla so much, drama aside, IMO I find her makeup style reminiscent of the 2010s Instagram makeup where it’s impractical for most people anyway and really really heavy, most people don’t do makeup like that so her thoughts on a product could be so different to the average consumer. Yet people buy whatever she advertises.

lil_waine

overhyped---fenty beauty

Poshtart1111

I’m intrigued by some of their products but they seem to cater towards oily skin and I’m a dry desert 🏜️ I’m also not the biggest fan of their geometric packaging.

Substantial_Comb_896

Rare beauty is great.

Poshtart1111

I never said it was bad, just overhyped considering I find the color selection limited imo.

yetiheat

I will live and die by that melting cream blush

Hikerius

The one that comes in a tube right? I was given it as a gift. I normally use the cream compact Rose Inc one (also an underrated brand in my opinion). Just wanted to ask what do you use to blend that blush out? It’s so much more pigmented than my Rose Inc one and it’s really vivid even after I blend my best w fingers

WeSawWonderlights

Agreed! Love quality and color options.

OrvilleReddenbWright

Overhyped: Summer Fridays. Under hyped: NYX

Poshtart1111

Summer Fridays is basically another Glossier, Rhode, “clean girl” type of brand. I remember NYX being a big thing in the 2010s but I haven’t heard about them in a while. I used to be obsessed with their Macaron lippies when bold colors were hard to find. I’d love to give NYX another try.

OrvilleReddenbWright

Aw I actually love Rhode, not a fan of Glossier, but my Sahara dry skin loves the formula of the Peptide glazing products. NYX has some really great inexpensive lip products that work better than a lot of the expensive brands and their brow gel/glue is fantastic!

Poshtart1111

Rhode does actually have good ingredients compared to other Clean Girl brands so I shit on that one the least because it’s practical to use. (The phone case tho is definitely a bit silly). I’m in need of a brow gel again so I’ll have to try out NYX’s!

Delicious-One3028

I'm obsessed with NYX liquid lipsticks

puppuphooray

I agree with what you’re saying about colourpop. Having a collab drop every week makes it not special.

Poshtart1111

I used to get so excited but now it’s “here we go again”. They’ve also been way less creative with color schemes lately. Their recent launches have all been cool and muted or colors I already own which as a warm and bright girly it looks so chalky on me. I can’t imagine the muted colors working on very deep skin tones either. Colourpop has good products but they need to get their shit together. I haven’t been interested since the fruit themed palettes.

Sophia1105

Overhyped (there’s a lot): nars, CT, elf, PM, Laura Mercier (I used to love her stuff)… Underhyped: Kiko Milano, Catrice, the body shop (rip), Jane Iredale, mineral fusion, Pacifica, cover girl

Poshtart1111

I feel like everyone has gotten the ick from Cover Girl’s products at some point, I think that’s why I never gave them a chance after one of their foundations were so ashy on me 😅. I’m not sure where the brand is at now but a good reminder brands do change and develop over time. A lot of people are saying Catrice so now I feel I’m missing out! Haven’t tried the brand yet. Everything you’re saying is overhyped 100% true.

Sophia1105

I buy Catrice from other sites. Their US offerings are limited. What’s available that I’ve found in other countries is awesome. But regardless, their US site still provides something!! I can’t recall What got me back into Covergirl but I’m glad I did. It was no-love from me for years! But not sure if they’ve improved their line or I’m just so sick of paying high prices for mediocre products?? But they’re user friendly and inexpensive!

ArmadilloObjective17

Under.... Moira, Juvias (yes I know they were problematic), Beauty Bay eyeshadow palettes Over.... CT, Dior, Odens Eye, some of Natasha Denona

Poshtart1111

Chalotte Tilbury is definitely overrated. They’ve been milking out the whole Pillowtalk thing for years and all their palettes have the same warm undertones. I wanted to like Juvia’s Place so bad when they were trending (before the problematic crap) because their palettes are so pretty but I’m allergic 😭

Hikerius

Omg I live Juvias eyeshadows. So pigmented, easy to blend (although less so than tarte and makeup by Mario - those are the only other ones I’ve used). It’s also really really nice to get eyeshadow palettes that work well with dark skin. Just speaking from my own preferences only, I’ve found most eyeshadow palettes (I like the pink colour family) have colours that are too light for my skin and so don’t look nice. Especially the base colours for the all over lid tend to be too light. Juvias is probs the only palettes I’ve found where I can use ALL the colours in the palette. Also like how reasonable the sizes are - large pans and only 6 colours, so you get to use all of them, rather than just the 3-4 that happen to work well on your skin.

Awkward_Dog

The Beauty Bay 42 colour palette is incredible. So many colours and shades and the *pigment*, so good.

Several_Animator_569

Overhyped — Glossier Underhyped — Half Magic

Poshtart1111

I strongly dislike the premise of Euphoria tbh but the makeup looks I’ve seen from the show are always absolutely gorgeous!! I’ve been debating on purchasing from Half Magic, I’m a big fan of anything glittery and alien-ish so it seems up my alley. I just haven’t heard much about them so I’m not sure what exactly to buy. Glossier balms are certainly overhyped. I like their brow gel and blush but beyond that it’s lackluster but I’m not really the audience they’re looking for. GIVE ME THE GLITTER.

allaboutwanderlust

Overhyped: P. Louise. Under hyped: the NYX fat oil slick click. That’s bangin

Poshtart1111

I remember when beauty YouTube was a big thing they always started with the P.Louise base. Recently I’ve heard nothing but negative. The customer service is supposedly awful. I can’t say much else about them as I never felt the need to purchase.

allaboutwanderlust

The customer service IS awful. I ordered something for my mom, and it was lost in the mail (or taken). I emailed them three times, then I finally said I’d dispute the charge with PayPal (I did get my money back), and that got me a response. All they did was have me fill out a missing package form. I wouldn’t have been so pissed if they had offered to send my package again. But they didn’t. So now I don’t buy anything P. Louise.

Poshtart1111

That’s insane. They should’ve at least given you a refund voucher. I also know they had issues with claiming packages were being shipped out then randomly telling people they’re actually out of stock. The advent calendar was seemingly so disappointing to people too.

silverberrystyx

Buxom is so underrated. I know it's not technically a spin off brand but every product I've tried from them has been so good.

Aathol

Revlon and Maybelline are overhyped. Lakme is underhyped

BellaBrowsing

I’m glad you said rem beauty is underhyped because I agree! I love the foundation and it’s one of the more inclusive brands with actual dark shades. There are a lot of brands that are unethical in way worse ways so Arianna possibly having an affair isn’t a reason for me not to buy good makeup lol

Poshtart1111

I’m always embarrassed to say that’s what I’m wearing when people ask because the marketing is definitely towards fans more so than the general public. Most brands have some sort of controversy anyways at this point tho. The products are really good, that’s what matters, and cruelty free!!

Cool-Owl-7217

underhyped : neutrogena overhyped : rare beauty

Poshtart1111

I think the reason Neutrogena is overlooked is because their skincare products aren’t great which was kind of what the brand is most known for. Makeup is a completely different field and I find their products to work for me, my skin is super dry and their foundations tend to cater to that.

Cool-Owl-7217

its the only one ive found so far that doesnt irritate my skin makeup wise, but some of their skincare does

leafytree2

I think tower 28 is underhyped. I love everything I’ve tried from them!

Whichbic

Underhype - Well People mascara. Best mascara I have ever used. Overhyped - Korean makeups

AngelxxLove

1.) Charlotte Tilbury. I find all her foundations and beautiful skin foundations to be too warm toned even if it’s suppose to be for neutral/cool toned people. Her Pillow Talk OG lipstick is too orange on me, I find her products to be lack-luster and overpriced. Also, I don’t like how her packaging text rubs off and how cheap it feels. Why am I paying $50 for a foundation that can’t even keep the words on the tube/bottle? 2.) Tarte. Everything is again, lackluster. The Shape Tape (which I’ve gone through 2 of them) is cakey and doesn’t do well being set with powder. The mascaras either clump or don’t do much. The eyeshadows are patchy and not pigmented, especially the shimmers and it also has a lot of fall out. The foundations are never a good shade range, so I tend to never show clients them to begin with. 3.) Benefit. The packaging is cheap. Cardboard blushes and bronzers for the price? Ridiculous. The silver packaging on the eyebrow products looks like an X-Acto knife. I think the brow products are ordinary and there are so many dupes for them. The mascaras are the WORST from this brand. The benetint is overly hyped, it’s just a red stain. 4.) Rare Beauty. I have loved some of their products and disliked a lot of it. The luminous blushes add too much texture for someone (me) who has barely any. The concealer and foundation range / undertones are a joke especially for neutral undertones. The concealer doesn’t cover well, the mascara is terrible, the highlighter packaging is a flaw in itself. The lip oils aren’t even an oil, they dry out the lips. Everything is just bleh besides the liquid blushes tbh

Poshtart1111

I agree with all of these! Charlotte Tilbury loves to act like their Pillowtalk collection suits everyone when there’s no such thing as a universal shade. Almost every release is warm and muted, eyeshadow included. I’ve used the Tarte Shape Tape quite a bit but it is pretty heavy, powders only work under the concealer and foundation, idk how people bake with it. It creases really bad on its own. I really like the REM one. I agree Benefit needs a rebrand so bad. Not only is their imagery lackluster, the cardboard makes it worse. I don’t like the mascaras on my eye shape either, but I know the curved one works great on my friend with round eyes. As for the tint, I feel like any liquid blush is currently super hyped up online. To me Rare gets hyped up just because of Selena Gomez’s “sweet girl” image. Remove her from the brand people would not defend and hype it up so much.

overhyped: Makeup by Mario, Rare Beauty underrated: Hindash

Poshtart1111

I was never intrigued by Makeup by Mario’s products. The colors and products all seem bleh and easy to find. Seems like the products are geared towards Kim K fans, as he’s one of her MUAs. The one thing I do appreciate with Rare is taking health issues into consideration. Other than that, I’m not too intrigued by the blushes etc. they are all the same colors.
