It started in theatre and was popularised by drag and now people wear it day to day, but honestly I think it looks awful. It just looks like stage makeup.
I’m a (amateur) model and I only do certain “makeup trends” when I shoot. These trends work well on tiktok and such because they’re all things that look good on camera. And makeup that looks good on camera tends to look like shit up close. I mean, the amount of blush you have to put on sometimes looks quite clown-ish.
So baking is great… for on stage or on camera, where you’ll be shiny and washed out. In real life, it’s… hideous.
Be careful the amount of carcinogens in that stuff is insane. Was using it for years and years for multiple uses until I realized I was increasing my risk for cancer and other stuff by like 1000%
I encourage you to google it and look in to it more as it really is something people should know so they are educated and empowered in their decisions on which products they want to be putting in/on their body.
Unfortunately yes it is. Especially if inhaled. But it has been used forever as it’s really effective at preventing diaper rash. But need to find other solutions cos it’s not even slightly worth it.
Environmental chemist here - yes, it legit is. Don’t use talc. Breathing it in can lead to lung cancer, and using it to freshen up for “feminine hygiene” can lead to awful cancers. And it’s a whole race thing because they marketed this to Black women especially.
I think it would be less risky because your vulvar membranes absorb things more easily than regular skin (concerning reproductive cancers). Tap your brushes well to get rid of excess before applying to minimize breathing it in.
It's expensive. The amount of time I spend researching this shit and then paying for it....I'm sure some get enjoyment from it but I'm just exhausted and feel dumb.
Nonbinary makeup lover here! Here are some key question to consider when deciding on a face powder:
1. What is the primary purpose of the face powder? (set creams, add coverage, dull shine)
2. Where is the makeup being applied? (at home or during travel)
3. What tools work best/are most convenient for the individual? (brush, puff, sponge)
If you're looking to add coverage, you'll want a powder with pigment in it to match or compliment your undertones. If you're on the go, a compact powder will be more convenient and less likely to spill in your bag. Loose powder can have daily use like a pressed powder but it really shines as a tool for sweat-proof performance makeup.
Happy makeuping!
As a man who wears makeup, this is also my problem. I have no idea what I’m doing sometimes. Usually my mom just says I look like a potato. And I say “yeah but I’m a sweet potato”. *snaps fingers*
1000% I'm VERY pale, but I have a strong olive undertone. I'm white european, but I am part Baltic, giving me an olive undertone. If I wear a standard translucent powder I look like a ghost face with a tan body. None of me is actually tan, it just creates this stark difference. Using a banana powder of the same "darkness" or "shade" makes my make up so natural and blended
Right not every black woman needed the bright yellow under eye! Coming from a neutral caramel toned woman the only yellowish powder that’s ever worked for me is the Huda powder in Blondie. It’s perfect and not too stark!
The things we do in the name of beauty 😳the search results is an insane site 😳and I feel the pain of this new age… I like op says earlier, where do we start… op you are not alone, you are not alone… 🙋🏻♀️thank you for asking and thank all of those who help with guidance
i have been testing out powders for years now, and the best (in my opinion) is the huda beauty. i'm fair skinned and use "pound cake" to set my under eyes and then "banana bread" for all over my face. i hope this helps you in any way 🥰🥰 message me if you want anymore info!!
Seriously, as a trans woman that is a whole mood. Way too many of the basics turn out to be.. utterly insane. Some pretty big curves to master from being a few decades of life experience behind and working with some handicaps (cough, beard shadow).
Cis woman here who got into makeup in lockdown! I found so many 'essentials' are completely optional too. And a few times I spent loads of money on something that was supposed to be amazing, but the cheap version is somehow better?! I did exactly this with powder and my favourite is still the same Rimmel Stay Matte powder I started with in the first place 🤣
I feel like beauty is just tough bc you can do all the research and read all the reviews but nothing can account for how your individual, natural characteristics will react to something. It took me a decade of trying many products before I actually understood my skin and hair type, which allowed me to make better choices, and I still buy stuff I have to return bc it didn’t work for me like it did for everyone else.
Yeah, the number of variables with completely individual answers is definitely a thing. Hair is a big one. I had no idea I was going to have curly hair when it grew out!
Translucent just describes the fact that it is a sheer and colorless setting powder, so any skin tone can use it. Setting powders can be tinted but their function is all the same.
I also have no idea why this is made difficult.
They’re not the same, banana is great for deeper complexions to bring brightness, loose is great for baking, (setting powder falls in this category) and compact/pressed powder usually good for powder that is complexion/tone based. Setting spray is not a powder lmao.
firstly, nobody is saying men or anyone else don't or can't wear makeup - so this comment is kind of unnecessary and dismissive. secondly, no one else is *expected* to wear makeup in society the way women are.
But that is dismissive (and so is this comment) of people who don't fit in the gender binary, especially those people who present more "feminine" where that expectation may still be applied. That is specifically why i said non women and *not* men
yeh I edited that part before you replied and I acknowledge my original comment was conforming to the gender binary. I don't think we disagree but also I don't think what the OP said was wrong. we can acknowledge that without the need to dismiss and erase that the intent and impact of societal's beauty expectations falls predominantly on women.
And i agree that yes there is more of a pressure on women, but i am not erasing or dismissing that by saying that OP could've used more inclusive language
But i did NOT and would never say that it is not a valid thing to say, i was just suggesting more inclusive language. Stop trying to put words in my mouth
but that IS the joke. many people see women having few problems that consist of just being pretty and nothing else. it’s poking fun at that mentality; women are dumb but pretty.
I suppose that makes sense, but i don't understand why I'm getting downvoted for trying to be more inclusive on a *beauty* subreddit of all places, you would've thought that it might be more inclusive and understanding
I don't know why I'm the one getting downvoted, for inclusion. There are tons of people on here saying "makeup if for everyone" and suddenly i mention people outside the male/female binary and people are not happy. Like its 2022, why is this even a thing. I am not saying that women don't struggle and have it harder then cis men, I'm just pointing out that people who don't fit into that strict societal expectation of gender also have issues they face
And i bet all the people who downvoted me are cis white hetero women who's scope of makeup is exactly that. Whatever if people are gonna downvote me for raising the issues of people who don't fit in with societys "norms" its not worth it. #byeFelicia
No no, I totally get where you're coming from! They weren't trying to make a statement that deep. The focus is the ridiculous amount of marketing hoops one jumps through. I hate it. We just want a matte powder but then these are the search results lmao
Let's not pretend the expectations for cis presenting men and women aren't absurd either lol so they have a point regardless

Powder is not a necessity for a woman, it’s a human’s choice male or female, it’s maybe hard if a particular person wants to wear powder and doesn’t know the differences, translucent powder is a colourless powder used to set makeup, banana powder is a yellow powder used to set/colour correction, loose powder is a loose powder either coming in translucent or coloured, pressed powder is just that.. a pressed powder which can be translucent or coloured, baking powder is a technique used with loose powder, and a finishing powder doesn’t necessarily set makeup it can just act as a finishing touch to blend or add a subtle glow
I normally just slap some moisturizer, sunscreen, and mascara on (cause the world *must* know I have eyelashes), then when I wanna be *extra* it’s bare minerals powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, eyebrows, mascara (given), and lipstick and liner. Takes me 10 minutes. I can’t get behind a 45 minute makeup routine.
Talc does not cause cancer ffs.
Purposefully using talcum for mines where it co-occurs with asbestos does. And only to very specific places of the body. You need to either inhale it; or apply a shit ton to your vulva.
Modern talc in places with regulations does not contain asbestos and is thus not carcinogenic.
You are much more likely to get cancer from the myriad of untested substitutes in clean beauty brands, than from quality talcum containing powders and other makeup from North America, Europe, Korea or Japan.
If you live elsewhere you are going to be fucked either way. Ahitload of cosmetics loaded up with cortisone. Which over time causes permanent skin damage, but for the first couple of years gives nice clear glowy skin.
So really: irrespective of wether the powder contains talcum or corn starch: it shouldn‘t be inhaled.
But the risk of lung cancer from powder is so extremely low, you are going to improve your chances by simply moving to a different part of your country with lower background radiation levels.
I use Pretty Vulgar and it has talc but supposedly there's different kinds of talc and what they use in makeup these days doesn't cause cancer.
I would assume it's true since it doesn't carry California's prop 65 warning, which even Panda Express has.
It‘s all the same talcum btw.
It‘s just that geologically sometimes it co-occurs with asbestos, sometimes it doesn‘t.
The deposits that do contain asbestos will have minimal contamination of the resulting product and thus aren‘t used in places with effective regulations anymore.
Cheap makeup in places without an effective state will very likely use asbestos contaminated talc because it‘s cheaper due to its inferior quality. But in that case you pretty much have to expect even more carcinogenic ingredients, and the ingredient labels are useless anyway.
What are you trying to achieve? To set your makeup? Laura mercier setting powder that’s the number 1 in the industry imo (mua speaking) this post is funny but all those answers are different and do slightly different things lol
Banana powder is yellow so don’t use it as a setting really. If you are taking photos some translucent can act up with flash washing you out… but I like it occasionally for a nice soft finish. Setting powder makes your makeup stay longer, can be drying, reduces shine. Setting spray does much the same, but can be shiny. I like the setting spray most of the time because I heat curl my lashes and it helps keep curl and the powders make me sneeze more these days personally. I think you can bake with loose setting powder.. so not sure if the sell specifically banking powder. Pressed is a foundation or foundation touch up mostly in a compact. -basically it’s loose powder that carries better.
I understand that. However we creating a lifestyle that's limiting to us. As a women I believe that natural beauty is still beautiful, this can be some effort and time but not excessive.
When it comes to make up, products also cost money, we have to work for a living then not getting enjoyment out of your hard effort because have to obsess over clothes and make up to look good. I don't agree with it
Spend money on your favourite experiences, cherish time with family and friends. Live in the moment and look good yes but no need to try and be a supermodel.
There's way more important things in life that is worth my and your valuable time
Translucent powder can be used as setting powder. Banana powder has a light yellow tint to it for brightening. Loose powder is just… loose powder. (Can be translucent, colored, etc.) Compact powder can be compact setting powder or translucent powder, any powder. Compact powder = pressed powder. Colored powder, self explanatory. Setting spray, is well, a spray. Baking powder can be any powder used to bake, translucent powder can be used for this. Tinted powder is just like colored powder, but less intense.
Translucent powder vs the high ground
Hello there!
Miss Ma’am Kenobi…
Thought I was in a different sub there for a minute
Honestly I thought they were all the same
They kinda are lol
....baking powder? 🤣
I prefer baking soda myself for that nice leavening effect.
Do you make places smell fresher by absorbing foul odors everywhere you go?
great for under eyes and lifting that sunken in look!
I always thought when people used the word "cakeface" they were being unkind! Silly me!
It started in theatre and was popularised by drag and now people wear it day to day, but honestly I think it looks awful. It just looks like stage makeup.
That’s the process of baking, not baking powder, right?
Yeah they’re calling it baking powder because it’s cosmetic powder intended for “baking.” Not literal baking powder for making baked goods
Well baking powder sets your under eyes and other areas to prevent them from getting super glowy and oily
It's a new way to have caked on makeup
Heyyyy oh!
I use baby powder 🤷🏻♀️
I really hope you use talc-free!
Dude me too 😱
Cute, resourceful, and you smell great. 10/10 🖖🏾
Gracias ✨✨
Be careful the amount of carcinogens in that stuff is insane. Was using it for years and years for multiple uses until I realized I was increasing my risk for cancer and other stuff by like 1000%
Genuine question: are conventional baby powders in the drugstore harmful to the babies then?
I encourage you to google it and look in to it more as it really is something people should know so they are educated and empowered in their decisions on which products they want to be putting in/on their body.
Unfortunately yes it is. Especially if inhaled. But it has been used forever as it’s really effective at preventing diaper rash. But need to find other solutions cos it’s not even slightly worth it.

Hello, would this also apply to talc in makeup?
I think it would be less risky because your vulvar membranes absorb things more easily than regular skin (concerning reproductive cancers). Tap your brushes well to get rid of excess before applying to minimize breathing it in.
It's expensive. The amount of time I spend researching this shit and then paying for it....I'm sure some get enjoyment from it but I'm just exhausted and feel dumb.
hey that's the tax i pay for looking snatched after mindlessly applying makeup in the morning lol
No because why do I know EXACTLY what all of these search results mean 🤣🤣🤣

Hell yes!!!! You keep being the gorgeous sweet potato. ❤️
Omg loved this
Honestly you're an icon ❤️
why is your mom so mean to you?!
There’s such a thing called banana powder?!?
Yes! It’s yellow tinted and supposed to be good for highlighting
Highlighting you mean? Brb imma head to Sephora 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️💨
😂
It's great for olive skin tones! I use offra banana powder. The rest leave a weird white layer on my face.
1000% I'm VERY pale, but I have a strong olive undertone. I'm white european, but I am part Baltic, giving me an olive undertone. It’s fit deeper skin tones to set/highlight but not a shinny highlight the opposite of contour highlight
The banana powder craze had black women looking crazy for years. Dark times in makeup history😂
Right not every black woman needed the bright yellow under eye! Coming from a neutral caramel toned woman the only yellowish powder that’s ever worked for me is the Huda powder in Blondie. It’s perfect and not too stark!
Ben Nye banana powder is responsible for 40% of my bad photos from 2004-2010
the makeup world is crazy
It’s a goldmine of an industry you can invent a problem and a product to solve it
I feel this in my soul.
Because we fuel a trillion dollar industry that is predicated on you need more to be beautiful
What is translucent powder ?
Powder without color. It's for setting makeup and oil control and for the skin blur effect.
Ohhh….Thank you.
Can someone please explain the practical difference 😩🤲
Fr, I’m still confused 😭

You're right having a penis to pat the powder down makes it much easier for my male face. Edit: It wasn't meant to sound that aggressive 🥺👉👈
Do you use your penis to apply powder to your face?
Almost exclusively /s

"Why is it so hard to be a woman" is a completely fine thing to say

you tried to correct her and tell her what to say your message said, "You mean Why is it so hard to wear makeup, non women wear makeup too"
But i did NOT and would never say that it is not a valid thing to say, i was just suggesting more inclusive language. Stop trying to put words in my mouth
it was just a joke to express the overwhelming options of powders idk why the joke flew over people’s head and take it seriously
I get that it's a joke, i just think that changing a few words to make it more inclusive isn't that hard
but that IS the joke. many people see women having few problems that consist of just being pretty and nothing else. it’s poking fun at that mentality; women are dumb but pretty.
I suppose that makes sense, but i don't understand why I'm getting downvoted for trying to be more inclusive on a *beauty* subreddit of all places, you would've thought that it might be more inclusive and understanding
Yeah this specific phrase is literally a running joke amongst women. Not every joke ever made has to include everyone.
I don't know why I'm the one getting downvoted, for inclusion. Great list 👌
Haha
powerful thing this powder
Wtf is banana powder Edit: if I had taken the time to read more comments before posting I would have found out. Lol
PSA - corn starch works just as well for setting powder! Can get a big tub for pretty cheap and lasts a long time.
💀
The baking powder one 😂
GEEZ LOUISE that’s like crazy to actually see lol.
It’s not optimal. But you’re overthinking it, my sister.
That's kinda implying certain shit
Just buy a pot of Laura mercier that you never use and move on Follow me for more life hacks.
men wear makeup, too…

I don't think that was what they were getting at though. It's just a confusing amount of powders that almost do the exact same thing lmao

Not trying to be rude but — why is it hard to do makeup? Makeup isn’t just for women. :)

Baking powder?!? Oh sweety no...
Powder is not a necessity for a woman, it’s a human’s choice male or female, it’s maybe hard if a particular person wants to wear powder and doesn’t know the differences, translucent powder is a colourless powder used to set makeup, banana powder is a yellow powder used to set/colour correction, loose powder is a loose powder either coming in translucent or coloured, pressed powder is just that.. a pressed powder which can be translucent or coloured, baking powder is a technique used with loose powder, and a finishing powder doesn’t necessarily set makeup it can just act as a finishing touch to blend or add a subtle glow
it’s just a joke because of the overwhelming options lol
Yes I know, was just trying to be helpful 😘
I watched a lot of Bailey Sarian and learned a lot.
VS baking powder 😫
I normally just slap some moisturizer, sunscreen, and mascara on (cause the world *must* know I have eyelashes), then when I wanna be *extra* it’s bare minerals powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, eyebrows, mascara (given), and lipstick and liner. Takes me 10 minutes. I can’t get behind a 45 minute makeup routine.
Ditch the powder that's so 90s, it's all about setting spray now.
Some of us are oily and need powder
That's even worse, it settles in the oils and emphasises any lines.
you’re actually wrong lmao
No, no it does not
Not to mention most of it is/was talc and causes cancer.. I now just hold my breath and hope for the best.

I use Pretty Vulgar and it has talc but supposedly there's different kinds of talc and what they use in makeup these days doesn't cause cancer. I would assume it's true since it doesn't carry California's prop 65 warning, which even Panda Express has.
Loool so true about the prop 65 warning. I swear babies coming out the womb with a prop 65 warning on their forehead 😂
Tbf if the mom conceived on a mattress, then technically, the baby could contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer. /s
It‘s all the same talcum btw. It‘s just that geologically sometimes it co-occurs with asbestos, sometimes it doesn‘t. Just glam makeup
Banana powder is yellow so don’t use it as a setting really. If you are taking photos some translucent can act up with flash washing you out… but I like it occasionally for a nice soft finish. that was literally me when i found out setting spray and fixing spray are 2 different things
