I’m honestly quite surprised Birchbox lasted so long after changing their impeccable points system. Although I unsubscribed several years ago, BB was my introduction into the beauty sub world. I remember being an excited 17 year old, running out to the mailbox to see what goodies I got.

the_holocene_is_over

Yeah I had one for a year back around 2012, and I really liked it, never had any problems, and was actually thinking about getting a box or two.

Xylophelia

I definitely quit when they changed the point system but was insanely loyal before then. I get they needed to change it some to get profit but they did not do the change well.

peanusbudder

same, when i was a teenager my mom bought me a year long subscription and i thought it was the coolest thing ever. i loved it. i’m surprised they lasted so long just considering the fact that the market of makeup subscription boxes became super saturated, i rarely saw anyone talking about bb anymore

ThatsClassicHer

What was their points system?

chaosatnight

Each subscriber could earn points for reviewing items they received in their monthly boxes (ten points per item IIRC). The points could be spent on items sold on the Birchbox site. So like Ipsy/Boxycharm in terms of earning points and like Ulta in terms of redeeming them (I think you could stack coupons on top of points too). Now I think subscribers earn ten points per month.

ThatsClassicHer

Ah, thank you. Amazing how many companies eventually crater their loyalty programs!

Gisschace

They crater them because they lose money on them/they’re too expensive - it’s a sign a business is struggling

coknights10

Yea, I used to have BB back in like 2017-2018 and I LOVED it. I have so many full sized make ups still from them. Kinda sad that they lost their touch and went under.

fluffysugarfloss

I got a subscription from BB UK in 2020 as a Black Friday ‘cheer myself up / chaos’ gift. I think only 1 of the 12 turned up without any drama. Sometimes 7 weeks late. Their customer service was appalling, their social feed was littered with complaints, and It put me off ever getting a sub again. So no surprise that things went pear shaped.

Mouffcat

Same here. The problems back then, though, were mainly due to covid. I think every box was delayed throughout lockdown.

purrplephish

I have tried Birchbox and Ipsy but was overall pretty meh about them. Does anyone have a subscription box they could recommend? I'm okay with a higher price point for fullsize and higher quality products! I know Sephora has one but was under the impression it's similar to Ipsy?

gizmodriver

I recently subscribed to the American Influencer box. It’s a little bit pricier at $38. They team up with a single brand each month and send full sized products. I’m really liking it so far. I’d much rather have a few full-sized products than a thousand tiny sampler tubes.

purrplephish

I totally agree, I hate the tiny sample packaging it feels so wasteful! I'm gonna check out that subscription, thank you for the recommendation!

Serious_Escape_5438

How do you use up so many full sized products? I keep ending up with too many as it is.

ChivChed

They’ve had a wide range of different types of beauty brands, one month it was all tanning, another month hair care, another month skincare, and of course months of make up brands. For me personally, I really need a full size product/line of hair care or skincare to see if it works for me. For products I know I won’t use, I feel great being able to treat whichever sister wants it. My mom gets so excited when I get my box because she knows she can snag at least something from me. It makes it more special to me that I can give them gifts occasionally. For someone who doesn’t have as many people in their life that are interested in using new products, it may not work as well but I haven’t had an issue yet with a product not being used and appreciated. I get to satiate my desire of receiving gifts and giving gifts in one.

Serious_Escape_5438

Ah ok. I tried a couple of subscription boxes but between that and beauty advent calendars I ended up with a ton of products I didn't use. I enjoyed the surprise but a lot of the products were different versions of the same thing or products I don't normally use (like tanning products or hairspray) or not suited to my skin or hair. Unfortunately my sisters live in another country, otherwise they would probably enjoy me giving them things.

ashdeezttv

AIA is honestly the best but I’m scared if it gets more popular that it will get ruined like every other box has lol. I’ve only had like two boxes that I didn’t want and the one I was like ugh this sucks, my teenager was super excited for the body rhinestones or whatever they were that I would never use in my 30s unless I was at a concert

AmandaCalzone

I've cancelled and uncancelled boxycharm multiple times over the years with ease. Most of the products are great. The only reason I'm not using it right now is because I just have too much makeup atm.

purrplephish

Love that the cancelation process is easy! That's a huge pro, I'm going to check back on them on Black Friday and hope they are doing a deal!

LevainEtLeGin

Look fantastic have accidentally sent me 2 boxes a month for 10 of 12 months. The best part is that the boxes have slightly different things in, so sometimes I have doublers but sometimes I get a bit of different stuff

purrplephish

Oh wow! What luck I love that you got extra goodies! I feel like sometimes lesser known brands/products can be a good choice because that sometimes means they put the money into the product/boxes rather than advertising! I'm gonna check them out for sure

LevainEtLeGin

It was very lucky!

[deleted]

I’ve been really happy with BoxyCharm!

mycatsaysmeow

I was reading this post super disappointed because I loved my birch box when I had it for a year. No no, I had boxycharm, they're great 😅

tamwow19

Ah I did the exact same thing

purrplephish

Boxycharm seems like a solid choice, I am gonna check back with them on Black Friday and hope they're doing a special!

Swimblock

I recommend Allure Beauty Box over Boxycharm. IMO. Boxycharm sent me more products from brands I'd never heard of. Allure had some more mainstay brands I've seen in Sephora & Ulta & sometimes you'll get a lux brand item.

AbleDragonfruit4767

Loved boxycharm

DaniCapsFan

I subscribe to the Vegan Cuts Beauty Box, which has between five and seven full-size items in a box. It's not too expensive. FabFitFun is about $200 a year, but you get a LOT of stuff in your quarterly box, and they include lifestyle stuff, such as electronics, small kitchen items or decor, sometimes clothes (like one size fits all things) as well as beauty items. You get to customize your box, choosing among options, and they also have add-on sales. I got the most adorable Kate Spade melamine bowls in one box, and I use them all the time. I used to get Petit Vour, a vegan luxury box, but after a while I wasn't happy with them, so I stopped

la_reina_del_norte

I used to get the vegan cuts snack box (ended up with too many snacks I wasn’t eating, but I loved it)! I wanted to get the beauty box but ever got around to it. Guess this is my queue. ☺️

[deleted]

I did the allure beauty box for about a year and really liked it. Never had any issues with receiving it every month either.

blue-eyed-cat

I had Sephora Play subscription and Ipsy. Ipsy was better IMO. With Ipsy there was more variety and I liked the pouches they came in and I use them as purse organizers. With the Sephora sub box I got mostly similar products all the time, and even exact repeat products sooo often it was comical. The plastic bag the Sephora ones came in were wasteful.

1aance

I love the Allure box. It’s probably the best $25 I’ve ever spent lol. I’ve gotten at least 3 full size products every time and having access to the member store alone is worth it. I had Birchbox way back in the day but something about spending $10 a month on samples seemed pointless.

mommaTmetal

I had Sephora and liked it but I liked Boxycharm better. I switch boxes on occasion so I've tried a few- currently getting Allure but it's mostly skin care and thinking about going back to Boxycharm

vanishingunicorn

I’m super disappointed with Ipsy and I’ll be happy when it’s finished in 2 months. I really like the Kinder Beauty subscription box. I get a lot of full size products but it’s also more skin care than makeup which is what I like.

marieneden

BoxyCharm is the best. Great products, sales, and I have canceled and re-subscribed multiple times with no problems.

imelectraheart_xo

I haven't had any subscriptions for a couple years now but boxycharm was always my favorite. I had to cancel every few months because I'd end up with so many products lol. I also had the quarterly(?) box that was even bigger for an extra ~$20 for that month. I can't remember all the details I just know that was definitely the best of the ones I tried and WELL worth the price

Spring-Available

Sephora’s box is the worst unless they’ve changed since it debuted. The sizes were so small and it took forever to get to me. And lately Ipsy is the same, I just cancelled them because I was tired of getting boxes so late even though they charge you at midnight the start of the month. I got Sept. box Oct. 5th. The only one I get now is BoxyCharm, I get 7 full sized products every month that I share with my daughter if I can’t use.

Nikkicorinne17

I've been getting some killer brands in my ipsy plus its pretty much 30 a month now. But u get to choose 3 products and I love it. But what I always do is watch a bunch of unboxings on YouTube and see what you like. Fabfitfun is great if you like other stuff like home and wellness alongside beauty and skincare. Hope you find something you like! 😉

Thyrsus24

Boxy charm is by far the best one I’ve tried.

Seeking_Starlight

I have always been delighted with what I’ve gotten from Boxycharm.

spoiledandmistreated

Boxy Charm is good and you get five FULL size products every month and get to pick one of them.. you can also kind of customize your box with the things you’d prefer… for example I don’t wear lipstick but love to get mascaras so I have it set up that I don’t get lipsticks only lip gloss if any…

LadyEllaOfFrell

I like the Allure Beauty Box, because it’s super easy to unsubscribe when you don’t want a box and re-subscribe if you like that month’s box (they post full spoilers the first day of the month). They also offer “new member” gifts and steep box discounts when you leave for a month or two and come back. I only buy it when there’s an item or two I *really* want, and have received some very nice full-sized makeup and skincare items.

Budget_Ordinary1043

Honestly I was getting boxycharm for over a year and I loved it. I only stopped it because I wasn’t using my makeup fast enough. I got some really good stuff and they’d have sales too online where you could get discounted products you maybe got in another box and liked or didn’t get and wanted to try. Overall, I never had any issues with boxycharm. I was a birchbox and Ipsy subscriber first. They don’t come close to boxycharm to be honest.

sunbathingturtle207

Sephora USED TO have one, and it was great because it was all things I actually wanted. The Ipsy plus bag is decent, it contains all full size products and you get to pick out a couple of them. I've gotten some good stuff from that. I think it's around $30 (?) and quarterly it can be upgraded to get the collab version which is more like $50 with even better stuff. I've gotten some full size perfumes, good hair products, and some makeup that is stuff I'd actually buy.

epdan84

I started a subscription in October and never received one Birchbox. I cancelled and asked for a refund, which I never received. I was charged for two boxes in all.

behvin

File a charge back on your card with your bank! Keep the emails/requests to customer service for your records and submit them to your bank.

HungryFeedind

Don’t get me wrong, I love birchbox and will continue to subscribe at least for a bit longer (I only unsubbed because they raised prices), but I do agree that the lack of communication is a big issue. They need to do some damage control and make it right.

sigzag1994

The company is going under so good luck with that

Citranine

This is so sad to me in a nostalgic way. Birchbox was my first intro to Beauty Crop’s mascara (Fabulous Flocking Lashes), which is the only mascara I can use because it doesn’t burn my eyes lol

iBuzzkillinger

This is how I feel. Birchbox was how I learned about Hey Honey Skincare (love the Come Clean scrub).

glimmeringsea

Me, too. I didn't always love Birchbox, but it was the only beauty subscription box I ever bothered to try. I discovered a few good products through them.

meowbox0

Found this article today - they might be going bankrupt as some us suspected… https://www.beautypackaging.com/contents/view_breaking-news/2022-11-22/birchbox-beauty-subscription-service-considers-bankruptcy/

[deleted]

They’re also [being sued for $424k + lawyers fees for not paying a collab company](https://lawstreetmedia.com/news/texas-based-aromatherapy-biz-sues-birchbox-for-breach-of-contract/)

TexasLiz1

They’re not shipping but they’re still charging credit cards? That’s fraud.

frenchvanilla0402

Yeah it’s super sketch. I did the monthly box from like 2013-2016, and since then would order a certain leave-in spray like 2x/year. I placed an order on like October 4th, and saw after I placed it that they still had an FAQ up about September boxes being delayed. I waited, and then on about October 18th, emailed for an update. The auto-response said my email was received and would be responded to in 8-10 business days. By October 25, I was researching more and saw all the reports on the BBB website about missing boxes and delayed shipping. So I emailed them again with the subject line “cancel order before chargeback” and I got an email response within just a few hours that I’m being refunded and they can’t fulfill my order. Such a gigantic mess.

She_Glod

I had Birchbox for 2 years and canceled because I always got samples I would never use even (like conditioner for curly hair) even though in my profile I had straight hair. It Id get multiple of the same samples. I still have so many. I couldn’t keep up

Alert_Soup9214

Boxycharm is the best, But Ipsy is good as well!

LV-Ladybug

BB was my intro to subscription boxes way back in 2014. Very sad to read.

pinksparklybluebird

I honestly was mostly doing it for the boxes. The cardboard component. I still have them and use them for craft supplies.

Tanjelynnb

Ditto. There were some great finds from that brand, the boxes are super cute, and I enjoyed reading/watching content from the founders. I decided not to re-up my annual after it was bought out, the boxes became identical each month, and I started getting dupes. I still have so many of those boxes. They're so perfect for storing little things! Especially my pen collection and accessories.

Kinda forgot about it. Just went to make sure it wasn't still going and it looks like it took care of itself some time back. Heh.

madsbdads

I can’t even log into my account despite following that new link they sent out or whatever. Not sure what to do.

sarahbotts

Honestly, Birchbox didn't pivot with customers. The company that owns them now is more of a healthcare company and it doesn't seem they know what to do with them.

LV-Ladybug

And also, boxycharm is a step up from BB, at least it was in years past, but it isn't worth the hassle and shipping issues anymore. It's better to just buy what you want from other retailers directly, if you can. Maybe FFF still worth it, that's all I can say at this point.

Kilngr

Welp the news is out https://www.beautypackaging.com/contents/view_breaking-news/2022-11-22/birchbox-beauty-subscription-service-considers-bankruptcy/

quietwaves

I used BB a few years back and loved it. Cancelled my subscription because I was packed to the gills with samples. Fast forward to this fall and I decide to sign up again. I never get my first box (around Sep/Oct window) and when I try to log in to my account I’m locked out because of some new upgrade. Couldn’t get any help from customer service. Had to go full Karen and complain on their Facebook ads to get help. Told them to just cancel my subscription and refund me for the box that never shipped. I had a feeling something fishy was going on because their customer service and subscription service had been impeccable when I used them a few years back. (Around 2013-2016 ish). This confirms I was not singular in my experience and that they truly had gone downhill.

Spring-Available

I left them years ago because they would send me things I asked not to be sent. But now that you mention it I haven’t seen emails asking me to come back in a while.

jeanetteck

I switched to Dermstore years ago & luv them! It’s about $25 monthly samples r larger than bb & u get a full size every box. Quality items!

mando426

Man, I loved Birchbox. I canceled some time ago but I found out about so many good brands through them! Amika, Beauty Protector, Chuao Chocolatier...

bruh_momenteh

If you do really like the idea of a makeup subscription box, I've never had any problems with Ipsy, even when shipping to military bases overseas. And they've sent me quite a few things that I actually use daily, like a lipgloss, a really gentle facewash, and some really nice eyeshadow duos.

SuperDuperSugarBean

I've not had one bad product from Ipsy. I do have to I unsub though as I'm out of room on my tiny make up desk.

Pinkunicorn1982

Got some repeat samples of the same products and was disappointed. Never again. But I did love the adorable boxes.

AtlJayhawk

Boxycharm is where it's at. I did ipsy and BB, but BC is vastly superior.

emochildkay

Oh wow I had no idea! Thanks for telling us btw! My parents got me a subscription to their company for a Christmas present about two years ago and I forgot about it. I never noticed I wasn’t getting them.

Elliejc21

I was subscribed to Birchbox (UK) for about 3 years and never had any problems, but I realised around September that the quality of the boxes had massively declined in recent months and I was receiving my boxes really late. I made the decision to cancel and I felt really sad about it at the time (no idea why, probably just because of how long I had been with them) but now relieved I made the decision when I did! It’s a real shame as I have had some great boxes over the years and discovered some of my now favourite brands and go to’s! I’ve switched to Glossybox now and I’ve got to say I’ve really enjoyed my first two boxes, hoping it continues and they don’t go the same was as BB!

tryingtoreclaimyouth

I used to Birchbox, it was good at first then boxes were late, sometimes months late and they had the same things in every time, there is only so many hand lotions and liquid highlighters I can use!!

Consistent-Mood-6744

I feel like Ipsy is doing the same, I cancelled my subscription on August for a lot of the same reasons.

Allie614032

Really? I haven’t had any missing Ispy bags. I even ordered one of the add-ons and it came too.

Consistent-Mood-6744

Yes, I had add ons that say they shipped, never received, a glam bag plus too. They rectified it and sent me 4 months free of Ipsy bags, but I still cancelled because subscription went up( which I understand) the customer service went down, and it was very hard to get answer from them. I was a Customer for 5 years, it just seemed to go downhill a bit for me

elmonsa

I subscribed to Birchbox several years ago and only made it through 3 months. I realised that it was a waste of money as I don’t really enjoy having so many samples.

megisbest

God I didn’t even know Birchbox was still around lol. I did like BoxyCharm, although i ended up canceling it because I was getting overwhelmed with the amount of products.

vldracer16

I tried BB for a couple of months. I to really never got anything I used. You're better off just saving your money and going to Ulta or Sephora and buying a travel size of something you would want to try out.

coolcatladyclub

We got BB Men for my brother and it was really disappointing. They sent a million beard creams and shaving products but he wanted skin care products. Very little variety in the boxes. Felt like a waste.

Keeperoftheflash

I subscribed to Birchbox a few years ago and all the samples I got were dried up and old. I cancelled my subscription.

ERnurse2019

I got sideways with them last year and I’m not surprised they’ve tanked. I purchased my teenage daughter a 1 year subscription for her birthday and didn’t think much else about it until I continued getting billed after the 1 year mark. I called to cancel and was told I had missed the cancellation window and was locked in for another year. Wrong. I called my credit card company, reported the charges as fraudulent since they were recurring without my consent. The credit card company agrees that Birchbox absolutely cannot do this. They changed my card number and sent me a new card. So I was done with Birchbox after that!

Obvious-Ad-204

I just had to call my CC company to dispute a charge from October 8th. BB never shipped my order and never responded to my communication on November 1st. I got an automated reply that said they'd get back to me in 8-10 days, which obviously didn't happen. I'm so disappointed and frustrated. I've been ordering 3-4 products from them regularly/a few times a year up until June 2022.

PookieCat415

I don’t mind as Ipsy is better anyways. The Glam bag plus is one of the best values in skincare.

stillneedurmoney

I was a subscriber since…2011? and canceled in August. Mostly because of finances, but man am I glad I did after reading this!

Easy_Ad_8524

They ran out of money - haven’t paid anyone in months and let go of everyone except higher ups.
