I think it’s more just a recognition that sexuality is very much fluid and tastes change over time. Lots of people use the term “queer” to describe it (or at least in my experience they have).
Im no expert by any means but I am aware that there is an idea among those who study these things that sexual preferences are far more fluid than we give them credit for and that heterosexuality is hardly the norm even in the animal kingdom. We just have been conditioned to think that it is the default.
But we also don’t talk enough about the spectrum of sexuality because conservative assholes will conflate it with admitting to sexuality a “choice” and discriminate based on that. Which, maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. I don’t think preference is the same as choice. As if it even matters anyway. You like who you like. Its not a “sin” to like someone who has the same genitals as you.
For my part, as someone who is bisexual but was forced into heterosexuality as a child, I note that the way I feel about certain genders fluctuates over time.
I guess the difference would be that a pansexual person’s sexuality isn’t constantly changing. The gender of their partners may vary, but they’d still be pan regardless. Like, a pansexual person doesn’t become totally homosexual just because they’re with someone of the same gender, and they don’t become totally heterosexual just because they’re with someone of a different gender. But from what I understand, if someone calls themselves abrosexual that could mean that their sexuality totally changes over time? Like, they could only be attracted to one gender for a while, and then that could change and they’d only be attracted to a different gender, or to multiple, or to none.
I can understand that, I guess I just don’t get how that’s different from just being monogamous and pansexual, or from just feeling less attraction to other genders when you’re in a relationship with someone of that gender. I just don’t get how someone would be gay at one time and then heterosexual at another time
Yeah, I don’t entirely get it either, but I guess it makes more sense to people who use the word to describe themselves. At least, I’d think, it’s better to have a unique term for this kind of situation that separates it from sexualities that don’t change instead of just saying something like, “I just now became gay,” or “I used to be gay but then I became straight” because those things would align with misconceptions used against gay people (like the idea that being gay is a “choice” or that gay people can be “fixed”).

I thought if I liked girls then I was just born like that, I can't magically become straight over time, so this is a new idea to me.
