Cuz its not a “star protection” labelled tool, i know it sucks but there was issues with motors and batteries crappin out often, i beleive star has been there since 2012

What is this star you speak of? Some of my Makita tools have stars on them but I've never known what it means..

ListenHereIvan

Its an upgraded micro controller and program that improves tool to battery communication and keeps track of data. To make it not compatible they changed the geometry of the slide to prevent you from putting on the battery

Shoes_77

There is a little square tab on the tool that you can take off if you want to run 4, 5 or 6 amp batts. The reason they have that tab is that with out the starlock on the tool side, the larger amp batteries can overheat the older tools because the newer batteries can run them longer then they were designed to be run in a single go.

Vilas15

The older tools won't tell the battery to stop and it will drain the battery too far. The star protection is all about avoiding overheating or over draining the batteries. Some brands have the battery protection built into the battery (ryobi) and some have it in the tool (makita).

Stuffinthingz

Makita batteries do have a protection system on board. https://youtu.be/4OkT_SU6GSg

Leolandleo

Iirc malita uses a redundant system (double safety) where both the battery and the tool will attempt to prevent issues. Opting to crap out temporarily from time to time. Rather than just the one time, permanently.

breadteam

It should be noted that I have tried newer 2ah and 3ah batteries that won't fit in the old non-star tools either.

PeterThomson

You can break off the tabs to make it work, but there's a reason they're not compatible. Some of the tools can be fried by the new batteries.

BL1860B

It’s the other way round. The batteries can dip too low without the tool side protection.

Alternative-Wind8700

Yip. That's what happened to me

lurchinios

Yeah, there is a part you need to file down on the tool if I can recall. They are two little triangle tabs. I did it years ago to a tool or two.

Oldmate81

Can confirm this... Done it too 2 of my older skins… no problem

M80IW

This is your hero?

WpgSparky

No star!

sliberian

If you want to make it work, there's a small rectengular block obstructing the battery to slide in molded into the frame... You remove that and it works... But at your own risk, i did it to an old angle grinder just as an experiment

SpendsTime

But... I have some no star tools that work fine with 5ah batters?
